Planning to get this before the end of the year. A large part of me thinks this game gets the praise that it does is because it's a "mainstream" game with turn based combat that isn't your usual fare of waiting your turn to attack with huge production values. This kind of game on this scale never got this overwhelming amount of exposure therefore it's great.
Hoping I'm proven wrong and it does live up to it's praise but nowadays whenever I see anything get overwhelming amount of positivity or negativity, there's usually some conspiracy theory I come up with attached to it.
I am planning to play more RPGs soon. Did finish one recently. I do hope I'm wrong with this particular game.

I've had Clair Obscur on my radar since it released, now I have a good excuse to play it. I don't know a ton about it, it's an RPG with turn based combat and I love RPGs and turn based combat so it's right up my alley. I'm playing a lot of different games right now but I'll try my best to get to it sometime this month. Yall have fun!

It's not really "mainstream," though--it's solidly AA. The director worked at Ubisoft but left his job to pursue this as a passion project. A lot of the team was recruited via social media. Its current popularity is largely from word-of-mouth. And I don't think there's any big conspiracy behind it--it's just lightning in a bottle. The developers settled on a vision and managed to deliver a high quality result. I'd actually recommend reading about the development process, because it's kind of interesting how it all came together.
As for whether or not you'll enjoy it, that's hard to say. If you go in with high expectations, it'll probably disappoint you on some level. But if you convince yourself that it's overrated before you even play it, you might only focus on the flaws and ignore the good parts. That said, I feel like you'll find something in the game to admire.
For example, I'm about halfway through (because I started it last month) and I personally don't love the combat as much as everyone else seemingly does. Character growth and customization feels almost like a deckbuilder, which is great for some players, but for a while it was making me feel like I was spending more time in clunky menus than playing the game. Eventually I decided to use some character builds that other players recommended so I could focus on the parts that I absolutely adore: the environmental design, the dramatic setpieces, the haunting music, and the surprisingly naturalistic dialogue.
There are times that the presentational elements clash with each other, like a music motif that feels out of place or a story beat that doesn't quite land, but I like that there's some messiness here and there. To me, that's the proof that it's not some overcooked AAA product cobbled together by investor demands. It feels very human. It resonates. I doubt it will be my personal Game of the Year, but I really like it so far.

I'm currently 45 hours deep into my time with the game and I can't be more positive about it. I can confidently say that it's this popular because it's that good. I think that the game nails literally every aspect of what makes a good game for me. Let me just preface this by saying that ideally, you don't even read any of this. Just buy and play the game, experience every little thing blindly. I don't spoil anything here but I'm glad I knew nothing about the game before purchasing it, other than the review score.
The only part I can see people genuinely be mixed on in this game is the combat, since the parry system isn't everyone's cup of tea, but even that I personally really enjoy. I'm in the end-game and have been doing combat challenges for the past 5 hours or so with only brief story breaks, and time has been flying by because the combat is so engaging. It's flashy, it's just the right amount of challenging and there is a ton of customization.
The OST is probably what makes this game most special to me. I'm a sucker for a good OST, and Clair Obscur's is absolutely at the top of my list now. The range in this 8-hour OST is unbelievable. I literally would be listing songs for hours if I'd list each one that made me just stop and listen to it for a couple minutes, but if you want a taste, check these out. Some of these only show up once or twice over the course of the entire game, and it's just wild to me that the composer went that hard for all these random encounters.
- Tisser la Beauté
- World Map - Our Painted Death | Specifically the part starting at 2:14
- Monoco
- And of course, Lumière
That's just four that I find quite special out of literally 50+ songs. Should give you an idea for the range that I'm talking about. Feel free to check out Gestral Merchant, Gestral Summer Party, Rain from the Ground and Golgra too.
The level design is another aspect I absolutely love. There is one level/area in particular called Sirène that is among my favorite levels/areas of any game ever. Just like the theme of it, it truly had me hypnotized. In general, the game is really fun and especially rewarding to explore.
Finally, I want to highlight the story and characters. The way the dialogue is written is just brilliant in my opinion. On the one hand, there is a lot of subtle foreshadowing throughout. I've been rewatching some of the memorable scenes and now that I'm almost done with the game, I can't believe how they managed to fit all that in. Then there is the way the characters are written, which is just really believable and "human". That comes across through Gustave's character in particular, who is just such a sweet and charming dude. One of my favorites in the medium for sure. All the other non-humans you encounter also give the game its magical vibe that will make the experience stick with me forever.
This game just has so much soul and passion that comes across in so many moments. I really can't recommend it enough.

So had my first session:
Luna found me before I could commit suicide after the attack on the expedition once we arrived. Found a white nevron who didn't and attack and requested light. Now saw a flare being shot and heading towards it
So started the game and first impressions are fantastic. It sets the stage with very little exposition and instead does it via showing you the world and what you dealing with. The game is rather linear but that is not a bad thing and the combat is well stylised and is not overly complicated and the inventory is much easier then alot of the games i've been playing recently have. The combat offers some great interaction and interesting risk reward in terms of the dodging and parrying. Dodges are easier but only prevent helth loss while parry if done correctly can perform a powerful counterattack or give ap back but are harder to pull off. In terms of turn based I have seen both before but not utilized at the same time. The are some minor issues which I'm willing to look over. First it is all auto saved but there is enough auto saving that the inability to save at any point is not causing me issues as of this time and the other is that the lip syncing for the characters is pretty poor but I'm willing to look past this as the game was obviously synced to the French language and this is a AA game so doesn't have the money to afford resyncing for each language.

Reached Maelle who we found in large mansion. She said she woke up in that mansion but she knows I bit too much about the area for that to make sense. We found the curator as well and now able to upgrade my weapons and characters. Hewading to the ancient sanctuary now
03/08/2025 23:19
Went through the ancient sanctuary and now reached the gestral village
So I'm really enjoying this game. It has some great action and doesn't overwhelm you with too much information. Instead it keeps the moves simple and slowly increases it's details through the game. Each character also has there unique style which you can use and mana is increased through action instead of a mana bar and rewards using skills each fight. Being someone who tends to hoard this is very useful design for me. The only thing I'm currently iffy on is the open world. Nothing wrong with it but it feels superfluous and frankly could've been cut and the game kept in linear fashion and I don't think anything would be missing

Beat the gestrral tyrounament and sciel has now joined us. I've now gone to the esquire nest
05/08/2025 23:16
Reached esquire and went to get his rock from francois. He didn't have it now onto the next area.
Speculation : So I heard from a white nevron that the paintress isn't the true mistress so there must be someone hidden behind her. Also I now have a feeling that the old man and the recently shown masked woman are older versions of Gustave and Maelle respectfully
06/08/2025 22:01
nothing much to say today. I reached the stone wall cliffs and still exploring it
07/08/2025 22:25
So reached the end of the cliffs and the white hair came and killed gustav. Alot of vague talk in that last fight with nothing being really discussed. Found out his name is renio and he was the commander of the first expedition. So I was incorrect. Verso has now joined the party Now onto Act 2
08/08/2025 22:23
Not feeling great today so didn't get far only reached the volleyball mini game. Stuck on the hardest one
09/08/2025 23:11
Well beat the hardest volleyball game (Fuck that mini game) and went and explored the rest of the map. Not much else
10/08/2025 22:24
Finished the exploring of the area and continued with the main story Made it through the forgotten battlegrounds and laid Gustav to rest. Making my way to Monaco station
So yeah I don't like the gestral mini games ATM they are based on what are the weak points of the game. The platforming. As it's optional I won't hold it against the game too much.
Still the level design is great it really showcases the direction it wants you to go and centres it in the camera. Means it makes it easier to look around and know the direction to take

I just played through the intro last night, and that has to be the strongest intro I've ever seen in a game before, it had me in tears. The soundtrack is phenomenal so far too, it adds a lot to it. Reached Monaco station and picked up Monaco now on to old Lumiere
12/08/2025 20:00
More exploring today. Found and did the next gestral beach It's the tower climb one
13/08/2025 22:11
Reached old lumiere and the group was split but with it revelations came. Verso is Renoirs son and it looks like the paintress and alicia are of some relation. We not able to get into the mansion with the a paintresses heart. Now we have to go kill some Axons which sound like a set of behomoths that are unkillable expect the one in old lumiere
14/08/2025 22:02
Not much from me today. Just camp talk and exploring after old lumiere
15/08/2025 23:11
Beat the first Axon. The mask one. Verso said something interesting after that battle though:
"Was that Verso? Renio?"
Does this mean that this isn't Verso i'm travelling with
16/08/2025 23:02
Second axon down and now reached the paintress. Looks like the large image was an illusion and the main paintress invited me into the monolith. Making my way through it now just reached the manor looking area
17/08/2025 22:21
And the paintress is down. We returned to lumiere to celebrate but then during this time it was revealed that the paintress was only trying to prevent the gommage as much as possible and her was lmited so she can save those under a certain age. In the end the whole of lumiere was gommaged and now we reach the epilogue
...so I did kind have a feeling this was going to happen I have a feeling that this world is not real and more life an after image of someone's grief but why didn't renoir tell anyone that the paintress was preventing the gommage.? If that was explained i'm sure the expeditions wouldn't keep reaching for it. Looking at that last painting shown there is one person not seen from the family and wondering if they are what are causing the gommage. Still I hope we get explanations for there actions as it feels more like the character must move with the plot instead for there own goals.

Been away for awhile but I've started the game already, about 12 hours in I think? I LOVE IT
So I've been taking my sweet time with Clair Obscur, engaging in as many battles and optional stuff as I can. I do my best to mainly parry attacks and almost never dodge unless it's a more difficult fight such as Lampmaster.
Been having a lot of fun just experimenting and racking up damage, Maelle has been an absolute blast and Sciell is a fantastic reserve as I was able to finish up optional fights that I was severely underleveled for. The story so far hasn't exactly hooked me and I know there's a lot waiting for me still but the first act didn't really shock me or make me care enough, I love the world and the creatures inhabiting it tho Esquie is super adorable and the gestrals were an absolute joy to see. Combat is addicting such a unique blend of turn based combat, and whenever the music hits oooh my GOD what an experience. Still far from the end but I'll take my playthrough into the next month to not rush it out, a game like this I need to sit with me as long as possible to get everything I want out of it, I'm so glad I'm playing this right now.

Just started the game today, and I'm about 2 hours in. The battle system is decent, but I'm having a hard time getting into the rhythm for parrying. The opening does a great job at getting you hooked, I was not expecting the thing that happened on the beach. I initially tried playing the game ion French, but then a character with a white shirt showed up, and I realized these subtitles suck ass. They really needed to put a thicker outline on it. The text in general honestly feels too small and hard to read. I am playing on a small TV so maybe it's fine for everyone else, but I haven't had this problem with any other game.

Just finished another short session, grinded out a bit in the Forgotten Battlefield, the enemies there were a bit trickier to parry so it took me quite a few retries to try and get it just right. Got pretty good at it and continued, grabbed all the goodies and fought against the Dualliste, what a great fight that was! So far my favourite design for the enemies and some very aggressive attacks that are so fun to parry. Wasn't a difficult fight but it took me 3 attempts to get the parry window down before I got my successful attempt. We buried Gustave and Verso got to bond a bit with the others. Esquie's first friendship scene was super sweet, and I really enjoyed Maelle's character here, she's by far my favourite of the group.

So the world is a canvas made as part of the essence of Verso's soul. The paintress was his mother who was grieving his death as he was killed in a fire that damaged the manor in which they lived in. The renoir that I was fighting against was actually a construct created by the paintress or alina and so wouldn't of thought much about the people of luimier. The real renoir turned out to be the curator who now wishes to destroy the canvas as it is preventing Alina from truly getting over the loss of there son. I now have to go back to fight him but first a few side quests from the other characters have started to show up
19/08/2025 22:02
Well I geuss i've reached end game and all thats left is the final boss and optional areas. Gonna try and do as much as I can before the end of the month before hitting up the final boss. For now just doing the side quests from the companions only have maelle and monaco left to do
20/08/2025 22:01
Just doing more of maelle side quests... yeah this area is big enough to be a full on main quest especially compared to all the other side missiosn
22/08/2025 23:02
okay so now reached the peak of the third axon and now fighting Alicia There's a noticeable difficulty spike in the post ghame and io'm finding alot of the game harder now. Still Alicia I realised is a character of which the a paintress (mother) has created and the image is alot uglier then what is seen in the real world and the colour has been drained from her. I feel this ios a view in which the paintresses see her as broken and also from hints in the dialogue is being blamed for Verso's death by at least the a paintress
23/08/2025 22:59
Completed all the relationships now. From what i've read it's best to complete the main story before doing the rest of the post game so gonna do that and move Expedition into a podcast game for the post game content
24/08/2025 23:23
right done with the main story now. The final boss was interesting to me now as Renioir imo was right and I chose to end the canvas. But in the end you can see he and everyone in in his family are grieving in there own way and not in exactly healthy ways. Alicia has withdrawn into herself and trying to escape from the guilt she feels, Clea is an angry and lashing out, Alina has withdrawn into her memories and became the paintress trying to keep the family that once was while Renior desperately tries to pull the family back. None of the family is dealing with the grief healthly but Renior is probably the closest to dealing with it correctly by trying to move forward and Verso accepts his death has come and needs to move on. While I wasn't blown away with the story as most people on this thread were I still feel the game was a great story especially it's start and ending and ultimelty this an excellent game and a real strong RPG which I highly recommend.
I'm going to try and 100% but going to move this into a secondary and podcast game while I go back to Fallout New Vegas but should hopefully make some progress to 100% this game. Not sure If I consider this completed yet or not. Still I just reached Frozen hearts and completed the Nevron quest there. I have also beat Sprong and beat all the gestral games.

Well I geuss i've reached end game and all thats left is the final boss and optional areas. Gonna try and do as much as I can before the end of the month before hitting up the final boss. For now just doing the side quests from the companions only have maelle and monaco left to do

Just doing more of maelle side quests... yeah this area is big enough to be a full on main quest especially compared to all the other side missiosn

okay so now reached the peak of the third axon and now fighting Alicia There's a noticeable difficulty spike in the post ghame and io'm finding alot of the game harder now.

Completed all the relationships now. From what i've read it's best to complete the main story before doing the rest of the post game so gonna do that and move Expedition into a podcast game for the post game content

right done with the main story now. Made some more progress today, we got ourselves another party member Monoco! He seems to be the last one according to the achievement so I've finally met the full roster, and honestly he's such a pleasant addition. While his fighting style is a bit tricky and needs more planning in advance, it's super unique and I appreciate it a lot. Still haven't quite figured out how to use him to the fullest so he joins Sciel on the reserve team against bosses, while Verso Maelle and Lune take the front row in battle.
Chatted with the NPCs in the station and they are interesting, one of the more enjoyable parts of the game for me personally is conversing with the "locals" so to say xD They're different due to not being human so their traditions are fun to learn about, along with their speech patterns and way of life. Got new cosmetics for the girlies from them too. Then we headed off to Old Lumiere. On the way I fought against one of the giant enemies that is clearly way above my current level and should be faced later, but I attempted it anyway. Gave up after getting a bit farther than half way through its health because it took a lot of time so I'm saving it for later.
Now back to the adventure itself. Here we got some new pieces of the story, Verso is Reniour's son! The manor itself seems more important now that we know the heart of the Paintress rests there, and this mf just moved it?? like hello😭?? The fight against Reniour was very difficult, I couldn't figure out the parry timing for most of his moves since they're so delayed, at varying speeds and some animations weren't very clear so I had to retry a lot. Maelle was the MVP in this fight for sure, she's my favourite to play as on top of being my favourite story wise. But it was a fun fight, didn't end up needing the reserve team for this one, the petals gave us trouble but the high damage output from the party made quick work of em. Had to change some of my pictos to give my party more chances for buffs and use the most out of them, plus Maelle applying defenseless helped out a ton, and the roulette picto came in clutch most of the time we dealt MASSIVE damage, not to mention making use of the parries to rack up more AP and counters for extra damage, some counters ended up doing 9999 damage which helped out a ton. I did have to resort to dodging a lot too, as I said before the parry timing is tricky here so I had to be safe here and there, especially with the masks and vanish attacks, something about them was always off putting but in the end the vanish one I figured out and that was the key to our victory. And then NOCO DIES NOOOO 😭. We got an interesting moment between Maelle and the masked girl, hinting towards something deeper going on here so I'm interested. But the real highlight for me was the time at the camp with everyone, ofc the party is upset at Verso (mainly Lune) for hiding who his father is, but the situation has been resolved. Then spending time with her was funny, you get to exchange some fun moments with the girls and then my beloved Esquie omg I can't lie I ended up tearing up, he's just so sweet and adorable I love him. His friendship with Verso is very precious I can't wait to see more of it. With that being said next up we're gonna fight some giants ooh boy.
