A surprisingly lean month. A mix of family holidays and increased workload meant that my free time was spent on keeping fit and healthy, leaving a tighter schedule for video games.
As such, I’ve completed only 1 game, and not a particularly long one either (it falls into the medium category on my Game Size Guide below). I did make progress with a couple of others, so next month is likely to be more robust in terms of completions.
12-Sep-2025 - Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 (PC) – 6H36M
I got Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 on one of the major sales for a couple of pounds. I’m not very good with platformers, so this looked like a good entry for a rookie, and it is. The game mechanics are leaning toward the younger generation, but it’s still unassuming fun with a few challenges. New mechanics are introduced at a balanced pace, save-points are plentiful, and the game does not overstay it’s welcome. When someone asks for an introduction to the genre, this is probably what one should recommend as opposed to Hollow Knight or Mario Galaxy.
For October, I am already a session away from finishing Remember Me, and about 65% into Dungeon Siege 2. Hopefully, both will be on next month's list.
At the beginning of the year, I promised to add a game to my backlog only if I finished at least four. I guess I’ll have to skip the autumn sale with last month's output.
My Game Size Guide:
Tiny (0-2 hours), Small (2-6 hours), Medium (6-14 hours), Large (14-30 hours), Very Large (30-62), Epic (62+)

A similarly lean month. I quit my job and moved across the country this month, so it was light on gaming.

Monument Valley.
That's it.
I was having trouble really settling into anything for the most part and now it shows. Almost finished a game though and I have some stuff I am planning to play so October will hopefully go better.

I am also a part of the one completion club! 😂
9/17 - Viewfinder (PS5) - 4h 32m
Got this free from PS Plus and played it all in one day when I was sick, was a lot of fun and definitely mind bending for sure, but not as difficult as I imagined from the concept.
Only 2 more completions until I hit my goal of 12 for the year, which I think I can easily hit! And hopefully more!

Didn't play much this month. Although managed to clear one pending game that was paused for a while.
23/09 Cars (2006) (PSP) | 4h50m | 40%
This was my first time trying the PSP version and honestly it sucks. PS2, at least from memory, is way better.

Date: Game - Rating
Sep 7: Donkey Kong Country Returns - 6/10
Sep 10: Hollow Knight - 7/10
Sep 11: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - 8.5/10
Sep 13: Donkey Kong Jr. Math - 3.5/10
Sep 15: Slay the Spire - 9/10
Sep 17: Resident Evil - 7/10
Sep 23: Resident Evil Zero - 6.5/10
Sep 28: Final Fantasy IX - 9/10
The best games I played is September were Slay the Spire and Final Fantasy IX. I haven't played as much Slay the Spire as I would've liked, I won my first run at ~6 hours, and I've only put in 3 additional hours since. But I've been short on time, I still really enjoyed it. Final Fantasy IX is also really good. For a bit it was a 10/10 for me, but I encountered some issues such as some boss designs and a few progression bumps that hurt my rating of it. It's still a great game, with a few flaws. DKC Tropical Freeze was another great game I played this month, it's one of the better platformers I've played recently. The only part of it I didn't enjoy were the bosses.
The more mediocre games I played were Hollow Knight, Resident Evil, and Resident Evil Zero. Hollow Knight has some really cool combat and bosses, but I found the progression and exploration to be completely lackluster. The game doesn't reward exploration well, 90% of the rewards are just Geo which is extremely uninteresting. I don't understand the love for it. I feel bad calling Resident Evil mediocre, it's a really cool game. The atmosphere is really unique and extremely well crafted, but I gave it a more poor rating because the game hasn't aged very well. The gameplay isn't great. Resident Evil 0 improves a lot of the gameplay that was in the original, but in the process completely lost the expertly crafted atmosphere that the first game has (also the story kind of sucks).
The worst games I played were DKC Returns and DK Jr. Math. DK Jr. Math was just a joke game that I played so I won't really count it. DKC Returns just isn't a very good platformer. It feels like they couldn't decide if they wanted the movement to be momentum based or not, it feels very awkward. Much of the level design is boring and uninspired, and very frustrating at times.
I started the Resident Evil series mid-September specifically because spooky season is here, so I'll be playing some more Resident Evil games in October. They are the first proper horror games I've played and I'm loving them so far. I'll also be playing Final Fantasy X/X-2, and Stellar Blade.

3rd - Trails through Daybreak II
30th - Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+
I think I'm done with Kingdom Hearts for the time being. II was way better than the first two games, but I'm not yet ready to have more of the same, especially since it's supposed to be the best in the series (I think?). Revisiting the same worlds for the third time gets kind of old. The combat was great, naturally, but several bosses felt either cheap, or overreliant on gimmicks (and Xaldin can go fuck himself, he's both).
With Trails, meanwhile, I'm done in the sense there's nothing left to play. I have some issues with the plot structure of Daybreak II, but the intermission is actually incredible, despite its weird premise. In other aspects, it's still the same Daybreak, which was great by itself. I already can't wait for Horizon.

On the final dungeon of Daybreak II I think. It can be hard to tell with Trails sometimes... I've been feeling pretty mixed on it, but yeah the Intermission was great. I am excited for Beyond the Horizon

Like everyone else, not many completions but I did get two in.
Dragon Quest (Switch, 09/07, 8.5/10)
POSTAL: Brain Damaged (PC, 09/15, 7.5/10)
Dragon Quest was a delightful surprise. I thought considering it's what many people call the first JRPG, that it was going to be archaic and frustrating. But it was the opposite. I really enjoyed the grind of the entire game and found myself feeling satisfied and rewarded for taking the time and leveling up my character. The 1v1 fights were quaint but nice and it was one of the more rewarding games I played recently.
POSTAL: Brain Damaged is surprisingly competent despite what I thought of the demo for it a long time ago and it's the closest thing to a Dream Simulator that we've gotten to in a long time. Found it very accurate to how my dreams make no sense and are just LOL Random stuff at any moment. It's very tech heavy with managing tons of weapons and items and movement despite not feeling great at first became certainly better over time. However the game crashed numerous times on me which was frustrating, I sincerely hope they intend to fix these crashes, but at this point they'll probably book it to the next project. Fine game in general.
I'm still trying to finish Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes for OG Xbox, so I'll probably be playing more of that this month alongside getting my copy of Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 on Switch this week and putting time into that. I'm very excited to play them as I haven't played those games since the Wii days and I don't know where my Wii or Wii games are at this point so having a Switch Version of them will be nice to revisit them. I hope I can get a couple more games in next month such as a replay of CULTIC with the Interlude and Chapter Two levels done also.

1. Eriksholm: The Stolen Dream - 6/10
2. The House of the Dead 2: Remake - 7/10
3. TimeShift - 8/10
4. Ultimate Spider-Man - 7/10
5. Cold Winter - 7/10
6. Yakuza Kiwami 2 - 7/10
7. Hitman: Blood Money - 8/10
8. Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater - 6/10
9. Metal Eden - 7/10
10. Gigabash - 7/10
11. Far Cry 5 - 6/10
12. Legacy of Kain: Defiance - 5/10
Best: Timeshift and Hitman Blood Money. Blood Money is still enjoyable and Timeshift being so derivative actually manages to come around be entertaining.
Worst: It pains me to say it but Legacy of Kain Defiance. I say that because the last few hours if not moments of the game is one of the emotionally resonating scenes I have ever even come across in media. It's just in a video game so aggressively medicore and dull. The term "unfinished" gets thrown around a lot but playing Defiance feels like a game that was quickly cobbled together. It's a game I should like too since it's a proto God of War like Rygar the Legendary Adventure is.
Apparently House of the Dead 2 remake is bad or something but it's one of the few Dreamcast games I want to try out and I don't want to install an emulator for it just to play it. Sucks that Goldman has a generic southern accent now but stuff like this is remaking the Room or Resident Evil 2002's voice acting. Trying to replicate the narm is an impossible uphill battle.

September 06 - Yakuza 5 - 27h 52m
September 07 - Stellar Blade (Completionist) - 48h 25m
September 13 - Devil May Cry - 5h 17m
September 28 - Need for Speed: Unbound - 25h 38m
Started the month by finishing up a replay of Yakuza 5 with a friend using a fanmade Co-Op mod and honestly it works surprisingly well. We only played the main story with the mod, but it is still a pretty entertaining experience with the janky camera, funny bugs, and impressive new cutscenes that the creator added. I also finished getting all achievements in Stellar Blade + playing the post release content and holy moly the two extra boss fights that were added are a crazy experience.
Another game I went back to is the Devil May Cry HD Collection and 1 has aged pretty well in my opinion. It is really neat seeing all the RE influence in it compared to the newer games. I'll be moving onto 3 since the reason I'm going through the collection again is to play Co-Op via the new DMC3 Crimson mod (tried 2, but fell asleep by mission 5).
Need for Speed: Unbound was a weird decision to play at the moment, but I felt the need for speed to play one of these games again and wanted to get it off my backlog for a while. I like the idea of the class system to make you prepare four cars for the finale of the game. However, I feel the game really suffers in the tailend when you are combating the S class AI rubberband on the repetitive tracks with every race ending in a tedious cop chase. I am playing the new full release of Tokyo Xtreme Racer now, so luckily I am unbound just in time to focus my attention on it.

Beat 2 games via Xbox Game Pass before my subscription ran out. I also finished Deltarune Ch4, however I'm also planning on going through all the routes for Ch's 3 & 4 and so far I've only done the pacifist route, which is why I'm not considering the game finished. Not sure what the chances are that I'll finish it this month, since I'm putting most of my free time into a personal project of mine.
August 5th - Little Kitty, Big City - 10h 7m - 8/10 - Main+ - Started August 22nd - 14 Days Taken - Beat the game, did all the quests, got 54/56 hats and got 82% of achievements.
August 6th - Unpacking - 4h 11m - 4/10 - Main - Started same day as finished. - Beat all levels and got 56% of achievements.
The best game is Little Kitty, Big City. It uses the fact that you play as a cat to its fullest potential and the character customization adds that extra connection to the game by being able to recreate your own cat.
The worst game is Unpacking. The game is grounded and has good environmental storytelling, however the combination of puzzle and cozy game elements don't mix that well. Would've been better if it leaned more into either direction.

Huge month for me. I started off finishing Clair Obscur, I finally beat the Max Payne series, and I played a few other games as well.
9/5 Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (PS5): 34:11 8/10
9/10 Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater (PS5): 14:51 8/10
9/16 Psychonauts (Xbox): 12:09 7/10
9/19 Max Payne (Xbox): 10:32 8/10
9/22 Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (Xbox): 6:14 9/10 - BEST
9/24 Max Payne 3 (Xbox 360): 9:39 7/10 - WORST
9/28 South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360): 9:46 8/10
Unlike most months I have stuff to say about (almost) every game, so let's go down the list.
Clair Obscur was very good, but not a 10/10 like a lot of people are saying, at least not for me. I thought the gameplay could have been a little more varied, and the dungeons were confusing to navigate at times. The game would have seriously benefitted from a mini-map. The story was very engaging and all the characters were very fleshed out. The enemy design all around was very creative. It's not my favorite, but it's still a good game.
Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater was a little disappointing. The original is my favorite game of all time, and I was looking forward to this remake. However, this didn't live up to my expectations. It's pretty much just a 1 to 1 remake of the original, but in the Unreal Engine 5. UE5 was kind of a bad pick for this game, and it makes all the models look a little off. Not to mention, they didn't update the skeletons of the models which causes some actions that looked fine in a PS2 game, to look really weird. Ocelot's reloading is the first example that comes to mind, but there are definitely others. Also why the hell can't you have the classic controls with the new camera? This is MGS3: Subsistence erasure. Finally, bullet drop is really fucking annoying. I never got used to it, and I have no idea why they added it. Bullet drop doesn't exist in any other game in the series, and it doesn't exist in most games period. It was just unnecessary and made shooting people less fun. But at the end of the day, it's still MGS3 so it's still a good game.
Psychonauts is game 1 of 2 I have nothing to say about.
Max Payne is a game I started all the way back in 2020, and it was one of the first games I bought and registered on my account. I stopped playing originally because I got stuck at the beginning of ACT III (if you know you know), but back in 2023 I decided I wanted to beat it and the entire series. So I bought all three games for Xbox/Xbox 360, and proceeded to not touch them for 2 years. But now I've finally beaten it. The game is great, bullet time is a really fun mechanic. Max Payne as well is a very well-written character and has some amazing internal monologues. Sam Lake's smug grin is really funny, and somehow doesn't take you out of the experience at all. Only real bad parts were the baby blood mazes, and the restaurant fire. Both of them are just a bunch of trial and error bullshit. The brightness is also way too dark, there were plenty of times I had a hard time seeing what was in front of me.
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, was a game I had lower expectations for due to it's short length. To my surprise however, this game is better than the first one. The gameplay has been improved, and they even added some cool matrix moves during bullet time. The story is very well written, and I enjoyed watching Max grow closer to Mona. But the ending is what brings it all together. Max's final line is the perfect closer to the series and tips it over to a 9/10 for me.
Max Payne 3 exists and I dislike that fact. Max Payne 2 was the perfect place to end things, and what does this game do? Pretends it didn't happen outside of one line of dialogue. The tone is completely wrong for a Max Payne game. 1 and 2 are like Noir's and this one's an action movie. But it's not the kind of action movie that makes money, this shit's a modern Travolta flick. The gameplay at the very least is pretty decent, but it plays more like GTA then Max Payne. This whole thing feels like a linear GTA game. Even when they try the Max Payne's internal dialogues, it never hits the same. They replaced all the carefully crafted metaphors with quick and sloppy similes. I can't in good faith give it a score under 7/10 because the gameplay was fun at times and I was never bored, but I don't like that it exists.
South Park: The Stick of Truth is another game I don't have much to say about. It was funny, I liked all the references to the show, but the gameplay was nothing special.
Now in October I'm doing a Resident Evil marathon for all the game's in my backlog I haven't finished. I already finished RE4 Remake, and I'm currently going through it's DLC.

4th September - Fallout: New Vegas (Including DLC) - 89h 1m 35s
13th September - Bit. Trip Core - 2h 32s
15th September - Bit. Trip Flux - 1h 40m 20s
17th September - Bit. Trip Void - 55m 29s
17th September - Bit. Trip Sage - 9h 34m 28s
24th September - Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (Including DLC) - 27h 7m 32s
27th September - Borderlands: The Handsome Collection - 92h 46m 33s
27th September - Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! - Claptastic Voyage - 7h 10m 55s
27th September - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - 59h 57m 52s
Ranking:
10th - Bit. Trip Void - Just doesn't feel right for the Bit. Trip games it lacks the speed and intensity of the other Bit. Trip games
9th - Bit. Trip Flux - More of Bit. Trip Beat. Played on the switch and the gyroscope controls were fiddly and hampered the game
8th - Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! - Claptastic Voyage - A filler DLC for a filler game
7th - Borderlands: The-Pre-Sequel! - A filler game with too much backtracking. Still has the strong borderlands 2 style and is more consistent then the original game
6th - Bit. Trip Core - One of the better options in the Bit. Trip series. An new take on the hit the bits to the beat with the centre be the location to contend with but still can be frustrating and the bits can bend and break rules making the levels try and error. Levels are also too long
5th - Bit. Trip Saga - A decent collection of Bit. Trip games. Runner being the strongest and Fate being the weakest. Games all are rather frustrating to play and the levels go on too long for most of the games
4th - Fallout: New Vegas - Lonesome Road - A rather linear DLC for an open world game but it does it with a strong Antagonist and a interesting story and area. It delves into a lonely journey and really pushes that feeling
3rd - Borderlands: The Handsome Collection - Collection is held up by Borderlands 2 which is an excellent Looter shooter. The pre-sequel is just filler and rather meh
2nd - Fallout: New Vegas - A fantastic RPG with a well built open world and excellent story with multiple factions done in morally grey setting. Game crashed alot though
1st - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - A brilliant made RPG which keeps you invested throughout with it's world created world and compelling characters

I only beat one game last month...
Mafia III (Definitive Edition) - 42 hours 21 minutes
This game has all the ingredients to be an amazing one. The story is great. The gun play doesn't leave much to be desired. The driving feels great as always. The story is extremely compelling. Despite all this, it is let down by one of the most absolutely mid game play loops I've ever experienced. As many others have said it boils down to "go here, kill a bunch of people, hold a button to continue the mission." It's not enjoyable.
I wanted to push through because I found myself wanting the next hit of the story, but ultimately I was left quite dissatisfied.
I want to say I enjoyed my time with this game, but that would only be a half-truth. I enjoyed the first 10 or so hours, as the game opens up. I then hated the entirety of the mid-game, due to the sluggish, tedious and frankly boring game play loop. It feels like they tried to take the success that Ubisoft and Rockstar were having with their respective franchise and make one of their own.
Yes, the world is brilliantly crafted in terms of static details. But there's almost nothing to do besides the missions. Sure you can rob a convenience store for a drop of cash. You can also go and find collectables scattered throughout the map. Heck, you can even modify cars! The fact remains that they dropped the ball by trying to chase open-world games success.
The story is a cliched story of revenge, also interspersed with commentary on systematic racism at the time, intrigue into the War on Communism that was happening at the time, etc. It's decently written. I might even go as far to say that it was the only thing that got me through the entirety of the base game. If you can't stomach the repetitive styles of games I don't think you will make it to the end of this, unfortunately.
The setting of this game was done immaculately. From the level design to the soundtrack choice. It feels like you're in the south while the war in Vietnam is raging on. Honestly, this was probably the strongest point that the game itself had to offer. I felt immersed frequently. The only thing marring the immersion is the way the cops respond. It would have benefitted greatly from the same cop system that Mafia 2 had.
The dreaded game play loop. I made a comment to a friend of mine while playing this game that it felt like GTA Online, but singleplayer and an overarching story going on in the background. I still stand by this comment. Now, I actually do ernjoy the grind of GTA Online when I have nothing in mind I'd like to play, but when it comes to sitting down to play a narrative driven game, it is most definitely not what I wished for.
I think this game would have benefited heavily by sticking to the series' guns and keeping it story focused. I understand what the devs were trying to capitalise on here and can appreciate that at the time it probably seemed like a safe bet. But it feels like a Mafia game shoehorned into an open-world Ubisoft collectathon.
Overall, a 6.5/10 from me. Don't expect much unless you can stomach around 25 hours of tedious outpost clearing. The story and other aspects warrant a play through if you can.

Not as active of a month as July, but did manage to achieve a few completions in September and had a lot of great gaming experiences during the course of the month.
Sonic Adventure DX - Sep 13
Mega Man 7 - Sep 17
Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game - Sep 22
Metroid II: Return of Samus - Sep 26
After having waited to play the Adventure games for many years, finishing up Sonic Adventure DX was quite special for me and it was mostly a really great experience even though it was very stretched out. Quite fond of the world that is built up in Sonic Adventure and how everything connects with each other, though the overall story is very simple. Clearly mainly playing this for the gameplay as Sonic's campaign is absolutely fantastic overall and the gameplay that was great in the classic games was transferred amazingly to the third dimension. Other characters were a bit hit or miss, with me having a great time with Knuckles and Gamma, an okay time with Tails and not a great time with Amy or Big. The 100% experience took me over 30h and involved some really good parts like mastering all the stages, besides Big's which were frustrating, but also involved the tedium of the Chao Garden and the new additions in DX which just felt like padding. Found Sonic Adventure DX (with mods used to make it more like the Dreamcast original) inconsistent, but with the high highs means I'm likely to go back in the future. From the Blue Blur to the Blue Bomber and Mega Man 7 ended up being my favourite in the series so far. The visuals got a massive upgrade, the levels were fun to play with secrets to look out for, and gathering bolts to use in the shops was a great time. Happy that the series did evolve while also remaining what made Mega Man great. Been a bit since I played a Lego game and decided to continue my replays of them by going back to Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game. It was a fun time re-experiencing it even though it is not my favourite game in the series partially due to limitations due to the property it's adapting, plus the Steam version constantly crashing did get on my nerves. Was a very 100% experience compared to most of them, which I did kinda appreciate and it was a good time streaming this just like the previous two games. Also decided to also finally clear out Metroid II: Return of Samus meaning I'm now closer to having cleared all the main Metroid games, with me liking this game more than I thought with me thinking the linearity made up for not having a map and liking the upgrades Samus gets compared to the first game. Still very simple, limited, repetive and Super ends up being a huge step forward later, but enjoyed Metroid II for what it was as a little Game Boy Metroid adventure.
For October my plan is to fully or almost fully focus on clearing out spooky or more Halloween theme games to fit the month, so planning on continuing with the Castlevania and Resident Evil series and clear out at least Castlevania II: Simon's Quest and Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, but hopefully I get to several games in those series. Other spooky games I am considering playing through are Nightmare Kart which looks like a fun Bloodborne-inspired kart racer which is also free, Little Nightmares II since I enjoyed the first one some years back, my first Telltale game I have played in many years in The Walking Dead: Season 1 and want to experience the original Luigi's Mansion with someone very important to me. Could be that I also end up playing something not included here or that I do not have time for everything, in that case there is always later or simply the next October.
