Hello and welcome to the HLTB Movie Club, brought to you by Boh and No One!

The goal is simple. Have fun watching and discussing movies. That's it!
Each month, we'll all nominate movies, and then vote and pick one movie to discuss!

The rules.
- One nomination per person
- People can vote for multiple movies in the polls.
- Nominations must be old enough to be obtainable physically, online for free or streaming via renting or subscription service
- A movie can only win once. Past winners cannot be re-nominated.

Some other stuff!
- Don't nominate things whose discussions you've got no intention of participating in. This isn't a recommendation service. Maybe you want to rewatch something, that's fine. Just do your best to actually participate in the discussions.
- Unless otherwise stated, the movies nominated can be from any genre, time, country, etc.
- Movies can be nominated and discussed both in the HLTB discord server and in this thread (and the threads for the movies)

Nominations for August are now open!
Any movie in your watchlist you wanna watch and discuss this month? Go ahead and nominate it!

We'll keep the nominations open for a bit into August since we're opening them quite late this month 😅

I'll nominate There Will Be Blood, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

The Street Fighter movie from the 90s so I can have an excuse to gush about how much I love Jean Claude Van Damme's protrayal as Guile. I'm a huge fanboy of it.

I nominate one of my favorite documentaries:
Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Master (2011)

One of the reasons why I love those goshdarn games so much.

I'm not much of a movie person but I'll try this out, whatever wins I'll try to give a watch. I'll nominate a movie I haven't seen in a while that I really love, A Silent Voice.

Ooh I like this! Since I'm in film school I should probably participate, that being said it's gonna be hard figuring out which films are readily available legally.

I'll nominate Fight Club (1999) just to be safe.

Should be coming in the mail soon, and I don't know anything other than the description (and probably cultural osmosis), but I nominate One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

It's somewhat rare for anime, but in this case the movie is the original, and the manga and novel are adaptations.

Looking into it that does seem to be the case. Didn't even know the light novel existed, although it is weird that it released before the movie it was adapting.

I've never seen that Tetris documentary I'll try and find it somewhere. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a great film based on a great book, can't wait to rewatch.

Edit: The Tetris documentary is on Youtube at this link if anyone needs it -

Nominations for September are now open!

Also, side note, I'll make a separate thread for the movie discussions, since discussing them here would make it easier for the nominations to get lost. (should've thought of that last month 😭)

I'll nominate Akihabara Geeks, a 2006 documentary, which features the creator of Higurashi When They Cry, Ryukishi07. What is notable about it is that it was while he was still working on the game and it supposedly brings some insight into his development process. Because of this, it might have some indirect spoilers for Higurashi. The documentary can be found for free on YouTube.

I chatted on the Discord about this already but I thought I might as well throw some words into this forum thread as well.

I have already seen both Ecstasy of Order and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest before though I only managed to rewatch the Tetris docu for this movie club.
I still adore Ecstasy of Order. It's one of my favorite documentaries in general and definitely a big element in why I love Tetris games so much.
Seeing the early days of competitive Tetris through CTWC is very interesting and I love seeing all the different quirks and strategies pro players have despite the game itself being so simple and straight-forward. Really a testament to how much nuance and individuality there is even to something as functionally simple as Tetris.
Despite the many milestones achieved by Tetris players in the years after this movie, there is still a lot to this documentary to make it worth a watch regardless.

The last time I rewatched One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was when I first started going to therapy many years ago and psychiatrist said to me that going to a clinic "will not be like One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". lol
I still have a review up from back then on my Letterboxd.

As for my nomination for September, I'll put in Relaxer. A grimy comedy about a guy marathoning Pac-Man. 😃
