You're the owner of a hat store, and it's your job to make sure that you keep the stock in order. To do this, you must stack them up in groups of five as they come falling from the top of the screen.

Let's fucking goooo!

I have played numerous different Tetris off-shoots by now but I actually think Hatris might be the best sweet spot between curious oddity and actually functioning gameplay.
A lot of the creators attempts at following up Tetris were too experimental and awkward, but Hatris manages to reign it in just enough.

I want to preface though that the three different versions - the JP Famicom, the US NES, and the Game Boy port - all have different rules and mechanics.

The Japanese Famicom version just lets you straight up delete a hat type from the board after every stage.
The Game Boy version adds this special hat type you can earn by doing multiple "Hatris" clears to squash an entire stack at once.
And then the US NES version gets rid of that special hat and instead has the two creators of the game as support characters with their own individual abilities to summon.

It's all a bit wild but once you get into Hatris, it flows pretty well. There are some similarities with the puzzle game Yoshi on the NES, if you played that before.
I personally prefer the most straightforward Game Boy version though and that's what I'm mostly gonna focus on. I want to get good enough to actually beat all 9 stages and see if it continues on after that or if there is a win screen. I'm actually not sure.

I'll be playing via the recent Tetris Forever collection which includes all three Hatris versions.

After days of debating which version to play, I finally decided on the Famicom version. I don't have the game on GameBoy and don't have a flashcart to play off of either, I'll just emulate the Famicom version since I don't have one at home. Might check out the NES one as well while I'm at it.

I've known about this game for awhile and joked about it but never actually got around to trying it out, this is a good excuse to finally play it!

Ah welcome welcome to my shop Hatris. The best place for the for your hats needs we have party hats, top hats, bowler hats, those robin hood hats. I do apologies for the mess but there seems to be a curse on the shop where if we stack 5 hats of the same kind they disappear. Still we are working to fix this issue and will hopefully have a full literary with you shortly. Our shop assistant is working as hard as he can in displaying the hats in a nice presentable manor for your viewing needs. Please don't hesitate to ask us for assistance and any inquiries you have.

Did some more practicing on Game Boy Hatris. Still trying to reach and beat stage 9, shop 5 to get the win screen.
My original plan was to actually get there starting from the very bottom - stage 0, shop 0 - which you don't really have to do. Like most Tetris-like games, you can choose a starting point on a more difficult level, which I'm probably gonna do next time. Otherwise it seems like it would take hours to get from 0-0 to 9-5. lol

Hell, you might even get a win screen if you clear stage 9 on any shop level, but the reward might be smaller. Similar to the rockets in Tetris. I'm not sure. Haven't been able to get past stage 9 on any shop level yet to see for myself.
All I know for certain is that there is definitely a win screen after stage 9, shop 5. The hardest difficulty level available.

My longest run starting from stage 0, shop 0 in Game Boy Hatris went to stage 7, shop 0.
Next session, I'm probably just gonna begin at stage 0, shop 5 from the menu. See if I can survive starting on the hardest difficulty, which begins with a bunch of clutter on screen from the get-go.

Most hated hat: The top hat. (At least the wizard hat has whimsy and flair.)
Favorite hat: Always and forever the Game Boy exclusive helmet.

Alright, I finally beat stage 9, shop 5 (picking it from the menu) of Game Boy Hatris to get the win screen. That was tough.
I then also realized that you get unique animations after beating the last level of each "shop", making up 5 scenes of a character (probably Pajitnov himself) trying to put the crown on the statue of liberty. So I went through all last levels of each shop (again, picking from main menu) to see all those animations.

I think I got pretty much all I wanted from Game Boy Hatris now. Not quite the way I initially planned, but I take it this way. Taking the most shortcuts without actually cheating. lol
I might go back to it for some high score hunting, but I'm actually probably gonna go back to the JP Famicom and US NES version of Hatris in the coming weeks. Though I don't think I'm gonna try has hard to grind out a win screen. And I still don't even know for sure if the JP Famicom version has one.

New Most Hated Hat: The fricking crown. (Takes up just enough space to be a nuisance quite fast and can't be squashed by the all-mighty special helmet hat. If I was a shopkeeper, all my crowns would be on sale all the time, so I could get rid of them immediately...)

Welcome back

well good news first I guess. We are now able to sell crowns and this stock should be readily available with the shop. Unfortunately we will need to increase prices due to issues with the disappearing stock. I have repeatedly informed our assistant that he must stock 5 hats together but he repeatedly goes on about the stacking getting too big and need to increase his "score" whatever that means. I will be having words with him to make sure these issues are kept to a limit but please be patient while we work through these issues

I was kind of busy these days, but I have to take a few minutes to thanks whoever (Cock?) suggest this weird and funny game I wasn't aware of. As a great Tetris admirer, I (strangely) never bothered to discover other games by Alexey Pajitnov, and this obviously was a big mistake (in my defense, Hatris never came to Europe by the time of its release). Although clearly not as great as Tetris (in the sense it's not a game I can imagine playing and replaying and re-replaying for ever), this is a very interesting take of the puzzle genre. So, yes, thanks HLTB :)

Been playing the game for awhile now and I can't seem to get the hang of it well enough to beat all stages. Initially I was gonna just emulate the game but ended up playing via the Tetris Forever Compilation.
The original Famicom version was quite harder than the NES release personally. Getting to delete a hat type in the Famicom version was really useful, saved me a couple times, but I felt like in the NES version I was getting the hat types and combinations I needed more often which went a long way.
Despite that I still couldn't manage to beat all the stages so I'll be calling it quits here, capped out at stage 7 and I'm satisfied with that. Glad I finally got to play Hatris since it has been on my radar for a long time.

Oh, this warms my heart. I'm so happy you enjoyed that.
You said it was a mistake you didn't dip into any other Pajitnov games before. But to be fair, a lot of his other games and other general Tetris spin-offs are very rough. lol
If you are looking for more Tetris suggestions though, I highly recommend Bombliss (NES/SNES) and Tetris Battle Gaiden (NES), the latter of which was a Japanese exclusive until it was included in that recent Tetris Forever collection. Both are top-notch.

Duly noted :)

I've been on the fence about buying the Tetris Forever Collection for a while now (kind of like 'do I love Tetris that much?' haha). Bombliss look very fun. Thanks for the advices.

I have to confess that during the poll I was a little puzzled, I knew maybe 3 games on the list (including my own suggestion) but that's what I like about GotM, it's a good trick to come out of my comfort zone (which sometimes can be difficult as we get older).

Have a nice day!
