Hello,

While I've been aware of the PICO-8 platform for some time, I've only just recently begun exploring what it is exactly. For those unaware, PICO-8 is described by its developers as a "fantasy console." More about what that entails is succinctly outlined on the official site's FAQ page.

With that said, I was hoping to gain input on whether something like this could formally be added as a Platform option. Since these games are not technically browser games (though they all can easily be exported HTML5 builds), selecting Browser as the Platform of choice when submitting a new item entry seems disingenuous to me. This is especially so since it is intended for these games to be played on physical hardware.

I appreciate any feedback on the matter!

I was actually about to make a post requesting the same thing. It'd be helpful for my sorting if PICO-8 was added as a platform.

What a cool project.

I don't think we've had a case like this before. I think community feedback would be interesting for a decision like this. The site itself says the product is still in beta. It doesn't qualify under our usual platform standards. Its a virtual platform that runs on "PC". Doesn't really work as a storefront because games can be obtained from all over.

What is status of PICO-8?
PICO-8 is now in Beta, and is feature-complete with the exception of online score submissions, which are planned for 0.3.

Is it possible to sell my PICO-8 cartridges?
There isn't an official PICO-8 marketplace, but you are free to do what you like with cartridge you have exported, including selling them in other markplaces like itch.io or uploading them to advertising-driven sites like Newgrounds and Kongregate. Just make sure you have permission from any other contributing authors first!

It's been in beta for a long time then, I'm sure I knew of it before I joined the site. I think it was mostly used on the Pocketchip platform when that launched so I guess I assumed that was the intended host. It did come with it installed.

I do think it should be added.
- A software platform can still be a platform, Linux is a software platform not a hardware platform. The platform is a defined set of standards and Pico-8 has a defined set of standards that define a Pico-8 game.
- There are emulators, some people play the games on android handhelds.
- It has unique games
- It's more of a game platform than say, the Sega Pico which is basically an educational toy for small children but is represented on the site.

I think it qualifies as a legitimate individual platform in spite of its unique situation. The only thing stopping it is a minor technicality which I think can be overlooked, especially given one of the intended uses is to install on old computers to repurpose them.
