Description

Part of my Franchise Quest, an attempt to play all of the games of some of the biggest gaming franchises or series. This one is for Wolfenstein, the classic FPS franchise that predates DOOM yet often falls under its shadow.

This and its sequel serve as little more than charming reminders of the genesis of video games, and I personally don't think they're worth playing today. Watching them is great fun though!

A solid FPS from that pre-DOOM era where it's really just a bunch of mazes. I understand the hardware limitations, and I still find it fun! With a few mods for modern hardware compatability, this is an easy to pick up but barebones Nazi-killing shooter.

More Wolf3D and in the same engine, too. The difficulty is slightly higher here, with more convoluted mazes than ever! Jokes aside, it's no more than a map pack for Wolf3D, and shouldn't be treated as anything more. The last level is a treat though!

This could've been a really basic WWII shooter, but it keeps it fresh by adding in some crazy enemies and weapons reminiscent of the Doom series! Good overall, though there are frustrating points and some outright bad levels, including the titular Return.

Absolutely worthless FPS slop that squanders all of its interesting mechanics by making its hardest encounters completely immune to them. Essentially funnels you into a gameplay style that's so utterly boring I feel like I lost my mind.

A messy and severely lacking, but very pretty, entry in the series. It's definitely the best so far, with fun gunplay and decent stealth, as well as a bog-standard war/rebellion plot, but it's not anything special.

Truly just more New Order with different guns and more supernatural elements. Has some great run-and-gun segments, but lots of annoying parts with armored enemies that are impossible to beat easily. Horrible final boss.

PEAK! Easily the best of the franchise and an improvement over the previous Machinegames titles on every possible front. An impeccable shooter and an even better alt-history narrative of loss, despair, perseverance, and hope.
