Played first game in 2023, 2nd game in 2025.

Overall a great pair of Ace Attorney spinoffs, but the second game is better than the first. The main cast is strong (love Ryunosuke and Susato), and the setting of Meiji Japan/Victorian London adds a new dimension to the story that the main series lacks. The plot is a roller coaster of twists and turns, with everything culminating in the epic final case of the second game.

I also like their spoof of Sherlock Holmes and all the references to Doyle's stories Wilson/Watson, Gina becoming Inspector Lestrade, the Hound of the Baskervilles, the Professor

Playing AA4 (Apollo Justice) right now and although it's good, it just doesn't compare.

Doesn't go for humor as much as the main trilogy, but it has its funny moments. The relationship between the MC and the "Maya" replacement grows on you, as does Herlock Shomes, even though it's kind of inconsistent if he's dumb or brilliant. I remember feeling like the first game of the duology was a bit of a letdown but I guess they had the second game already in mind, because they connect much more strongly than titles in the main series. It's all one big over-arching plot which only really gets cooking in the second game. It manages to tie things up pretty well and I enjoyed my time with it.

Felt rather lackluster in terms of on the greater scale, coming after the first trilogy.
First game ending without a proper "final" case was rather disappointing.
In general, it was just okay.

This is a collection of brilliant Ace Attorney games. The characters, music, writing, dialogue, and visuals are all marvelous. It contains my now-favourite case in the series and the ending is incredibly grand. I love it all.

On the note of the visuals, this game was originally made for the 3DS which is impressive given the detail of the models. The game still looks awesome on modern platforms.

The ONE reason I can't give this game a 10/10 is because it's reaaally long. Granted this is a collection of two games, but I got fatigued playing this pretty often. It's still definitely worth playing though, but don't play for super long sessions and don't take week-long breaks between sessions otherwise you'll forget the plot (but that goes for all visual novels really).

Let us preface this by saying that if you want to fully enjoy this game (there are actually two, but given the plot of the second one continues directly and expands on the first, it is easier to consider it one game) you will need to have a very good command of the English language (for those for whom English is not their mother tongue). Exceptional and well thought out story, even if too slow in places. What can I say, though, most of the characters are really charismatic and memorable, but that's to be expected from an Ace Attorney game.

A very solid collection of two games that together have some of the greatest peaks in the Ace Attorney series. Spoiler thoughts and ratings for each case below.

Adventures: 8/10
DGS-1: A solid re-introduction to the Ace Attorney series told through an entirely fresh pair of eyes. A great setup for later trials, but is held back by the unnecessary final hour of the trial. 8/10
DGS-2: A worse version of Turnabout Sisters (1-2) that is retroactively improved by Resolve. 7/10
DGS-3: An only slightly worse version of Farewell, My Turnabout (2-4). Where Engarde shines as an evil villain, McGilded shines as a more subdued and intellectual defendant where his innocence is always in question. And, of course, the ending and introduction to the Reaper is golden. 10/10
DGS-4: Pretty unlikeable side cast other than Natsume and the cat. 6/10
DGS-5: Peak and a great setup for the next game. 10/10

Resolve:9/10
DGS2-1: A good excuse for a tutorial trial. A much-improved rendition of DGS-1 while also providing many questions that will become integral going forward. 9/10
DGS2-2: Slightly better DGS-4. Once again, it helps set up many mysteries going forward, but I don't know if it works as a case right here in the game. 6/10
DGS2-3: A great twist regarding Kazuma and The Professor combined with Susato's return and the coolest Ryunosuke/Sholmes Dance of Deduction helps make this case fun from start to finish. Only wish we got more of Dr. Sithe because her reveal lacks impact. 9/10
DGS2-4: While it's a shame that Gregson's murder isn't resolved until the next case, this episode is great from start to finish, especially the cliffhanger reveal. 9/10
DGS2-5: The best of Ryunosuke's cases, as can easily be deduced by the cold open. Neatly ties everything together, has a lovely message on the importance of finding one's family, is filled with a great number of satisfying twists, and has the best Dance of Deduction. While the final villain is predictable and Deus Ex Sholmes is somewhat ridiculous, it's beyond satisfying for everyone to team up and Resolve to find the truth. Had me tearing up at the ending scene just like Bridge to the Turnabout (3-5). 10/10

These are just my thoughts for the second game:
The second game has a better pacing than the first one and I love how it slowly starts to solve all the mysteries the first game set up. To have a planned out continuous story across the two games, was a great choice and plays out really well. The characters are as lovely as in the first game and it made me really happy to see so many of them return in this one, like Soseki or the Japanese police man with his ridiculous disguises

Case 1:

- I adore that we can play as Susato in the tutorial
- Rei is adorable and I ship her and her dashing lawyer
- Yeyy disguised police man and a confident Soseki are back!
- For a second, I was really worried that Aichi would commit fricking Sepukku at the end of the trial. They got me there
- OMG the double take down of that annoying reporter guy
- OMG the judge take down
- Lots of mysteries got set-up and I am excited to learn more!

Case 2:

- OMG the Shamspeare rising from the dead scene o.o
- Poor Olive Green, poor Soseki
- I can’t be the only one that interpreted the handprints on the wall very differently lol….I mean the placement, the height, how many of them were there, Shamspeares rather flamboyant behaviour…please don’t tell me I am the only one with a mind out of the gutter
- It’s so cool that there was an actual reason behind Soseki’s nightmares
- I really enjoyed this case, it had a intriguing set-up, we got the return of great characters and it was interesting to learn more about poor Mrs. Green and her involvement in all of this

Case 3:

- I am sorry, but the german professor is so annoying. But good for Van Ziek for having a friend, even if he is really bad at showing his affection
- VAN ZIEKS BACKSTORY!! VAN ZIEKS OFFICE!!
- the comments from Iris and Runo in Van Zieks office, while he is standing directly next to them, were so funny
- Give me a seemingly evil antagonist, but then give him some morals and moments of doubt and kindness and I turn into his biggest fan lol
- Susato is back! And Gina is trying to become a police inspector! Living up to the Lestrade name <3
- Aww I am getting really fond of Gregson… I mean he wants to take Gina to France, so she is safe from the curse of the Reaper…he really cares about her
- Damn why did they have to make the coroner Dr. Sythe so hot???
- All the lose story beats and mysteries are starting to come together!
- I really liked the Jury system in the first game, but now it’s getting a bit repetitive with the summation examination every trial. It just brings the whole trial to a halt without adding anything interesting most of the time. I wish there was a way to influence members of the jury in other ways DURING the trial so that it would feel more organic, without the game forcing you to do the same sequence over and over again. There is just no tension, because as a player we know that there will always be the same outcome and that enough members will have to change their opinion

- Case 4:

- Aww Mikotoba and Japanese judge are here! And they look really fresh!
- I like the Japanese Judge guy, it’s cool that they use his character more outside the courtroom
- The Scottish prison governor and his wee biscuits are fun too!
- WAIT WHAT GREGSON IS DEAD!!!!! :((( How??? Why?? Noooo not him :(
- Poor Gina ☹
- And the reaper gets accused for murder, nobody wants to defend him and Runo feels the need to step up for him, but he refuses his help…. A very familiar scenario (*cough* Ace Attorney 1 *cough*), but it works very well nonetheless
- Why is Gina the only one that’s super sad all the time? Gregsy is dead and I am sad goddammit ☹
- Not a big fan of cold and edgy Kazuma….he kinda gives me Sasuke vibes (ugh)
- Who was the professor?? Who is Iris father??? Mikotoba was Watson?? So many questions and revelations!
- I play the games in English, so imagine my confusion, when suddenly a german song plays in while a highly bizarre scene unfolds in front of your eyes

Case 5:
- An assassin exchange? Really? That just sounds so stupid, I’m sorry
- The corpse of Gregsy was crammed in a suitcase in the cute group picture?! Ooof v.v
- So Mael Stronghart really is the reaper…I always thought he would be to obvious of a choice
- Aww we get a Mikotoba and Herlock investigation scene
- Fun exciting trial, but the ending with Herlock and the queen felt a bit too easy/convenient

Conclusion:
What an amazing game. I am not totally happy with how everything got resolved and the trials with the Jury system started to drag a little. I am not sure if I like the whole Kazuma comes back from the dead storyline – I mean I wasn’t happy about his sudden death either, but the whole amnesia-revenge-being edgy and angry plotline didn’t give me much.
I wish they would have given Gregson more screentime, first together with Gina to establish their relationship better and later a chance to explain his reasoning/motives better. I still like him as a character, but there is

Very high praise from me. Possibly the best Ace Attorney game in the whole series. I hate to spoil it for you, so I won't say much. You may not get as great puzzles and gameplay as like, Ghost Trick, JFA, or T&T. But they're still there and it's still really fun. I'm saying I didn't struggle much with this game, but I did struggle a few times, and it was fun during all of it.

Story is amazing too. Don't wanna say much. If you're not into period pieces, then I guess avoid it. But I think the story could win anyone over.

Localization is great. I regret not playing this sooner, but also I think I played this at just the right time in my life. I was waiting on the Scarlet Study mod that swapped the character names. But I decided to just... accept that the names won't be the same transliterated ones in Scarlet Study. Is the official localization better than Scarlet Study's? I wouldn't judge it like that. They both have merits. Official has such an amazing period appropriate lexicon (it's good to open wikitionary and write any words you don't understand). Scarlet Study is a bit simpler and easier for an ESL to read. Both convey meaning and emotions efficiently. Regardless, I'm recommending the Steam version here, and since the Scarlet Study script isn't available for the steam release as of now, I recommend this official version for you.

You'll also want the Admiral Curtiss mod to unlock framerate. A few animations are stuck at a lower framerate, but it's easy to accept that I feel. I just couldn't play the game at 30 FPS. It gave me a headache.

Took me awhile to get used to the animation of this game.
The story and cases felt wayyyyyyyy too long and overstayed their welcome after being used to the original AA trilogy. This game feels way more like a visual novel than an ace attorney game in my opinion and took way too long to complete.
I took two breaks trying to complete this game that both span for more than two to three months.
On the upside, you have amazing music and charming animation. On the downside, you have a convoluted story that seems to be convoluted just for the sake of being complicated. A lot of the things that drag the game for too long are just details that are so conveniently being put there just for the sake of making the story longer.
It's a charming game, but it doesn't have the ace attorney feeling to it and has a pacing issue.
Still enjoyable when it's at its peak but still, it's far from being a perfect AA game.

Excellent series continuing from Phoenix Wright. The series streamlines the more annoying investigation phase to create a more courtroom-filled experience. Although the characters start with a weaker impression, they develop solidly and become memorable in their own rights. The ending is very tidy and ties every single case together (of all 10 cases). Probably the cleanest compilation experience I've played; I'll miss this series.

2 Ace Attorney games in one! Crazy. These games, aside from the obvious difference in era, feel very unique compared to most other Ace Attorney games, in that they're story is told across both games. This let's the game tell a somewhat more complex story filled with loads of moving parts, though it suffers a bit from being dragged out a little too long without enough killer cases until the finale. Despite this the game, full of eclectic and loveable characters, mysteries and plot twists, and some really good music, manages to achieve everything that's great about an Ace Attorney game, even with a completely fresh cast!

This game is actually comprised of two games that are tied to each other. They are the longest ace attorney games to date, and at times some of the cases might feel like a slog, especially in the first game.
However, some cases, mostly in the second game, are fantastic and have very memorable characters and twists. The ambitious overarching plot spans 10 cases across both games and finally reaches its climax by the end of the second game with such a payoff for all the effort that makes for an incredibly satisfying conclusion.
Overall this is one of the best games in the AA series and I absolutely recommend it.

Pros: The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is the best Ace Attorney game hands down. On its own, the first game in the duology isn't that grandiose, however, it makes up for it with unique cases—one where you only investigate and a third case that takes place solely in the courtroom. Both games have more unique music than the rest of the games in the series due to their setting and a lot of themes have their best versions in this game, especially the great pursuit theme.

The best part of both games are the characters and the story. The fact, that the game was so big it had to be split into two, allows for much more fleshed-out character development. By the end, you care for every main character in the game. Both games are intertwined like no other in the series. There are obvious connections between cases, but later on, you find out hidden connections that change your interpretations completely.

The bonuses such as the costumes, concept artwork, and music are great. They give you an insight into how the game was made, which is always interesting to know.

Neutral: The accolades are fun to collect and the names and icons do give you hints on how to obtain them during the game. Even if you miss them the game has checkpoints you can use to collect them after you beat the game. However, some cases could've used a few more checkpoints to minimize the amount of backtracking required.

Cons: The "from the vault" bonuses are great additions to the game. By this point, however, it should be sold separately as DLC, instead of being stuck as an early access bonus. I don't mind it being an early access bonus, but they should've started selling it as DLC the day the game came out. At the time of writing this almost a year later, it is still not available as a DLC that you can purchase separately.

This masterpiece features amazingly deep plot (with hints of the overarching plot woven into smaller cases), endearing and complex characters, attractive character designs brought to life by animations, a rousing soundtrack. A niggle of the VN format is that the sheer amount of reading makes it less digestible, and of course games of this genre require you to be in the mood for them (as opposed to action games).

This is 2 games and the first game is 5 episodes. I played 3 episodes of game 1, totaling around 10 hours or so.

Episode 1 was in a courtroom and mainly an intro to the mechanics again. It was pretty fun and the characters and theatrics were entertaining.

Episode 2 is on a ship where my best friend who was going from Japan to London as a law student was killed. The murder was blamed on me and I had to prove my innocence on this ship - the same courtroom mechanics applied, but on a ship which was interesting. It took too long to play out though and I lost interest, but there were 2 twists at the end which were really good.

I felt like quitting because although it can be fun it just takes too long to move through stuff. Episode 3 was in a London courtroom where I defend a rich man who was accused of killing someone in a carriage. Overall was pretty good, but the same shortcomings apply - it just takes too long to play out.

Overall it feels like more Ace Attorney. The characters and stories are really good, but it's just too drawn out for me and the writing can be a little too on the nose.

7.5 out of 10.

This is the best that Ace Attorney could ever be. This duology did what Ace Attorney did in a trilogy. Great characters, a moving, emotional and compelling story (I legit teared up) and a soundtrack that could very well be the best that I've ever heard in a visual novel. Seriously, just give a listen to the 4 Pursuit themes that this game has, and tell me that they aren't bangers. Ryunosuke truly deserves the title of The Great Ace Attorney.

These games are very good, and include some of the best cases in the Ace Attorney franchise. However, the extremely slow pace and dragging on of the story was apparent, and the repetitiveness was easy to see. The game had a very good difficulty, harder than the original trilogy without being strenous. I especially like GAA resolve case 3, as the pacing was very quick and efficient.

Continuing to surf their veritable tsunami of goodwill in recent years, Capcom have decided to bless gamers with their next port of the venerated Ace Attorney - not by continuing to port the mainline series, but by revisiting a prequel duology that sold poorly. It's a risky move, but it feels like a lot of passion, effort and money has been placed in this, and in my opinion it's well-spent. The port contains all-new English translation, from voice actors based in Britain and British translators, and most but not all of the content from the original release, such as unused art and music, three alternate character outfits and eight comedic mini-episodes.

"Phoenix Wright"'s ancestor, law student Ryunosuke Naruhodo, travels from Meiji-era Japan to Victorian-era London, amid stormy international relations, to learn the British approach to pointing and shouting, while trying to complete the mission of a friend. The change of location doesn't seem to have phased the Ace Attorney team one bit. All the Victorian London boxes are ticked, and that Ace Attorney kookiness is stamped on top. England has more than its fair share of eccentrics, so the caricatures in the witness stand are right at home in the setting and series. Two stand-out examples are consulting idiot "Herlock Sholmes" and real-life author Soseki Natsume! The 4-hour orchestral soundtrack suits the setting down to the ground too.

These are the most extravagant entries yet, but not as complete as I would have liked. The 3D animation is easily the best it's ever looked. An automatic Story mode saves us from A-1 having to make an anime adaptation. The good but sporadic voice acting didn't always sound clear against the music (sound levels can't be adjusted). There are even anime-style cutscenes, but only in the first half. Generally the game is extremely polished, but I hope Capcom will come back and patch a series of typos and minor visual issues that I couldn't help noticing.

The two new mechanics are fun, but not used to their full potential. The uncharacteristically snazzy Dance of Deduction has you course-correct Sholmes' bizarre snap deductions by simply... looking around a bit. If you somehow get the wrong answer, you'll get specific penalty dialogue. Back in court, you're constantly in danger of the capricious jury pronouncing your defendant guilty, and the Summation Examination is a last-ditch attempt to talk them round. They're fun to play but the challenge is again minimal.

Befitting the series' legendary localisation, the writing is full of personality and humour as well as functional. Where the rest of the series plays at being American, characters here are unabashedly from their respective nations, and freely reference local concepts and vernacular, which frequently had me reaching for a search engine. I often thought I'd found a typo or anachronism, then looked it up and realised the game knew English better than I do. I admire the decision not to stop and explain every new word to me, but other areas could have benefitted from this lack of explication too.

There's a kind of frustration to the first four cases. They're very simple, and small in scale and stakes. These suit a fledgling law career, but nevertheless lack much of the eccentricity and thrill factor of previous games. They're also so drawn out that I suspect they're some of the longest in the series. The need to mechanically scrutinise everything, digging into two or three layers of testimony, until a trivial contradiction pops out, occurs far too often. As ever, it's entertaining to see the key evidence you need come from the most unlikely place, but that by itself doesn't make you feel smart, just lucky. It could be that the team were aiming to use these games as a series entry point, showing players how to play... but imagine how potent Ace Attorney games could be if they, quite reasonably, assumed you had at least played the first game, and just got on with things.

Thankfully, what the first half is really doing is setting up a slew of mysteries that finally pay off in the second, with every case linking to another. Almost immediately it feels like a missing piece has been placed into the game, as it sets about answering questions (and throwing in more), adding more challenge, scope, stakes and energy, and building to a complex ending I will be thinking about for a while longer. This is really a brilliant spin-off; it's just a shame it kicks off with what felt to me like a 25-hour slow burn. I can't imagine how the 3DS players felt, waiting two years for a satisfactory resolution, but they certainly got one.

Capcom are considering a third instalment. I would be delighted to spend another 80 hours in this new world, but I don't know how it can clear the very high bar it has set for itself. I hope if it gets made, it's for art's, not popularity's, sake. I absolutely recommend this, but only to Ace Attorney fans - newbies should try the original Trilogy first.
