What a fun little jaunt into Britain with out Japanese cast of characters. What I liked:
* The animations are so much more vibrant and have a lot more movement to them.
* Getting to know the cast of characters in this installment has been a joy. Sholmes took some getting used to, but I'm now on board with him.
* There are saves before every scene so no need to worry that you run out of lives in the courtroom.
* There are some unique elements to the investigations like undermining Sholmes deductions.
What I didn't like:
* Something happens in the second case that I didn't care for.
* It's enjoyable but it's a similar game to all the other Ace Attorney games.
I'll likely start the second one in this duology soon or straightaway as I'm trying to finish all my 2021 goal games this year.

BEST FEATURES:-Dialogue is excellently translated from its Japanese Source and makes each character's voice feel distinct and readable
-Added Touches of Humor in the English Dialogue give it a lot more Charm
-Beautiful Artistry in its Excellent Character Models, Luscious Backgrounds and Authentic Music
-Susato Mikotoba takes the Crown as the Best Assistant in the Series
WORST FEATURES:
-Hard to view it as a Standalone Experience when it's only the 1st Half of a Story
-Borrows too many Story Beats from the Phoenix Wright Trilogy
-Too slow-paced and lacks expedience
-Cases 1 & 4 are bloody awful
-Weak Main Antagonist
OVERALL:
-I will always be extremely grateful to Capcom and Shu Takumi for putting in the effort to localise the Ryunosuke Naruhodo games overseas, when we all thought they were never gonna do it. However, I must give credit where credit is due; this might be the weakest Ace Attorney game in the series. It's still not a bad game (which says a lot about this series), but its low points really drag it down. As the 1st Half of a story, it lacks proper finality and feels mostly dragged out to excuse its runtime. The English Translators do not deserve enough praise for adding the necessary colour and charm this game needs, but I still felt the game's length drag at points. It is certainly a unique experience and again I am grateful that its localisation keeps the Ace Attorney series alive. I just wish it got to the point faster.
BEST PART:
-Case 3: The Adventure of The Runaway Room

i love period pieces, or things that stick to their theme in general,, so this game was a treat. much more special and memorable than other ace attorney games ! the characters and music and cases were just as wonderful while remaining (mostly) original the stereoscope shit hurts my eyes 😭 i bet it was cool on the 3ds though ! really interesting mechanic, i wonder how much it alone informed the rest of the game
for the most part this game does not have too many sections that make me go "that was stupid" or "how should i have known that?!"
there is some bullshit in episode 3 regarding the order in which you press witnesses and examine evidence, but that kind of stuff doesnt crop up too often in this game !!
one other nitpick is that in episode 5 you have to present gregson with specifically the FIRST redemption ticket you get, not even the second ticket, in order to progress the story at all,, which is not a huge deal but it had me very lost for a minute. after presenting the second one i gave up and tried doing something else but nope :( doesnt make much sense to do imo ! no indication that youre meant to either !!
episode 5 has some BULLSHIT imo but its really not that bad
one example is a bit where you need to prove that mr windibank wasnt holding a gun and so i presented the picture of gina holding a gun and windibank not holding a gun but noOoOoOo he couldve taken that gun from her later! (which is the truth, as we learn, but until that point its just conjecture 😭) you have to present the picture of windibank dead, without a gun, even though gina couldve taken the gun from him before the photo was taken !! (which did fucking happen !!!!!!!!!!!) like it can be thrown out the same way the other photo can !! why is this one right and that one wrong !! and when you ask iris for help she just goes "wow i bet you feel it in your bones that these guys are lying huh, sometimes u dont need evidence" and its like no !!!! you do need evidence here actually!! why would you tell me that !! fuck u !
but really these moments are few and far between ok i promise this game is good 98% of the time
its hard bc you have to take the game at face value but also question it, and accept video game logic but also catch inconsistencies, and assume things and come to conclusions but also don't assume !! and a lot of the time the game expects you to forget certain things and not take them into account and present something even though its wrong, and sometimes even if it makes sense to you, you actually need to present a different piece of evidence bc the game is on rails and needs you to do exactly the right option (glorified visual novel) several times you will present this argument (the one the game wants you to) and then van zieks goes "no lol your logic is flawed" and its like yeah i KNOW but this is what the game wanted from me man 😭
so its a little rough sometimes but all in all i think its really fun

While I do miss the 2D sprites, most of the 3D models and animations were excellent and they really tried to use them to their full extent. The soundtrack is an absolute banger too, as usual for Ace Attorney games. The game starts fairly slow, but the cases just get better and better. I love the drama, the historic setting, the campiness and the characters. Herlock Sholmes, Gregson, Iris, Runo and Susie, Gina, Van Zieks, Soseki Natsume… all memorable and lovable. Some notes to the different cases:
Case 1:
- Some glimpses of life, law and culture in Japan during the Meii period?? Love it!
- The design of the judge is so cool and I love how serious and intimidating he is (compared to the usual pushover we get as a judge)
- Lovely details in the animation – Kazuma’s flowing headband and strong poses are a great contrast to Ryuunosuke’s rigidness and nervousness
Case 2:
- Big fan of the Sherlock Holmes intros and references
- Why is poor Runo AGAIN the murder suspect and why is our mentor AGAIN dead after the tutorial???
- the little ballerina is adorable
- Herlock Sholmes is a lot sillier than I expected, but it works
- Kazuma died in a stupid accident?? Disappointing
Case 3:
- SOOO GOOD
- Van Zieks aka Edgeworth as an even edgier Victorian vampire???
- The tension and built-up are amazing, the game makes you feel so helpless and you don’t know what to believe anymore
- THE FIRE??? WHAT???
Case 4:
- McGilded really died in the fire?? Damn, I kinda liked him and his shady lying demeanour
- Gregson is great as well as Soseki Natsume! His antics are very endearing and I feel sorry for him. It must have been scary as an international student alone in great Britain back then
- I like the history tid bits we get in-between
- There are two very different couples in this trial
- The knife tip in the pipe was a bit too convenient for my liking
- I really like Van Zieks – he reminds me of Edgeworth and I like that he isn’t just some evil antagonist, but instead seems to be just strongly interested in finding the truth and punishing criminals that deserve it (he was surprisingly nice to the poor overworked bobby)
- Herlock Sholmes without his jacket – pretty hot lol
Case 5:
- Depressed Herlock Sholmes is hilarious
- Wtf, I did not expect the pawnbroker to pull out a gun and hold it to his own head
- Have I mentioned that Hurley is hilarious??
- Yeyy Gina is back! And she wants to claim a music disk from McGilded???
- The deductions with Herlock are fun, but sometimes a tad to long. Not sure if there is a better way to do it, but I would prefer not having to watch them twice every time
- The pawnbroker is dead? I liked him ☹
- Hurley got shot and Susie has to go back to Japan?????? The stakes are high!
- I really like Iris! I was a bit worried she would turn out annoying or be a Pearl clone, but she feels really unique, cute and clever
- Awesome case with great twist and turns
- Eggert Benedict was a great culprit - he seemed quite shallow and bland at first (while being obviously the culprit), but his story turned out to be way deeper and sadder than I thought
- The two thieves and their unofficial third member Gregsy were pretty funny on the stand
- Van Zieks leg slam is peak entertainment and never gets old
- I like him and how very threatening he sometimes can get, when he suspects someone is lying and he wants to hear the truth from them. You really don’t want to get on his bad side
- The REVEAL that Eggert killed McGilded?!?! I did not see that coming
- Yasss, Gina gets some character development!

Overview thoughts of each case.Case 1: Pretty neat but it goes on too long for a tutorial case. It does establish Kazuma as the coolest guy though
Case 2: A weird case since there is no trial scene at all. Which kind of drags it down but Herlock Sholmes brings it back up again. Also it's has such a tragic conclusion.
Case 3: A unique trial where the crime scene is evidence and a unique defendent, Mr McGilded is such a fascinating and despicable character who truly haunts the narrative and which personally shakes Rynosuke's belief as a lawyer to his core. You really feel like something is wrong and the further you go in the case the morbid realization starts to set in about the true culprit. It's not a satisfying case but it does set up for a massive payoff later.
Case 4: Just a normal case, but a really good normal case, one which finally establishes Rynosuke as a proper lawyer.
Case 5: An amazing final case with such a great payoff to what happened in Case 3. The bit in an AA game where a seemingly small crime is in fact linked to a massive conspiracy is gets my enthralled every single time.
Overall my main problem with the game it takes a bit longer for the game to get really good which I think would be around Case 4. Much slower then other AA games. Not to say that Case 1-3 are bad just not as satisfying in the way most AA cases in exchange for setting up for the overarching story of the game. But when it does get going though hooo boy. The game get's good.
Final thoughts: Another banger Ace Attorney game. Shu Takumi never misses.

Ryunosuke, AKA Phoenix's Wright's grandpa who was also a lawyer that operated in Victorian London. Very cool! DGS or TGAA are like the investigation series - there's an overarching plot line. This time though, it spans two games, not one. Because of that, the killers and endings to some of these cases might feel... unsatisfying. Just wait though, the games tie the story together really well.DGS1-1:
Intro case of the duology with a murder of an English Professor, Watson, in local Japan at a restaurant. I have mixed feelings on this. On one hand, the pacing is awful in this case. It makes sense why - Ryunosuke is basically defending himself without a single law class ever so there's a lore explanation for all the gameplay tutorials - but the case itself felt like it moved slowly, especially since it was just one trial day. Jezail Brett was a good villain all things considered though - you'll find out just how important she is to the plot. 7/10
DGS1-2:
Oh boy, this case is a contender for worst in the series, imo. No trial, just investigation as Ryunosuke's best friend Kazuma... is incapacitated on the boat to England. This is really just a glorified tutorial case as you get used to deductions, and introduces legendary detective Herlock Sholmes... I'll just call him Sherlock, lol. Nikolina wasn't really even a villain honestly, no comment on her. The worst part of the case is how long it is, honestly. I do not blame people if they decided to quit right here, though trust me, the game gets good real soon. 3/10
DGS1-3:
One of the best cases in the duology, and the first case in London. A murder in a taxi carriage that has far more going on that it originally seems. Introduces the main prosecutor of the series, Barok van Zieks. He's kinda got the Edgeworth vibe. Loved the twist that your defendant was actually guilty, Ryunosuke's got his hands full with a dilemma already. Cosney Megundal is one of the best villains in the series, and he's not even the final villain of the game. And the ending of the case with Megundal dying in a strange bit of irony in the burning crime scene after getting away with his crime was quite interesting. He becomes a relevant character later too, keep him in mind. 9/10
DGS1-4:
This case is actually part 1 of a case that's related in the second game, so keep the characters in mind. A unique case this time - no murder, just assault. Souseki Natsume being the defendant was wild, since he's a pretty famous writer in Japanese literature IRL, haha. The investigation eventually leading to the reveal that a local marriage spat with knives being thrown comically and the victim happening to walk underneath the open window of the room eventually gets revealed, what an ending to the case. Not a super serious case, though part 2 becomes more plot relevant. Also, we meet Watson! She's a little girl and Holmes' roommate in this series...? Unique take on the character, haha. 7.5/10
DGS1-5:
Incredible case from start to finish. The defendant, Gina Lestrade, is probably top 3 in the series with her backstory and how her guilt in the involvement in the deceit of 1-3 made her feel as though she didn't deserve to be saved. A murder in a pawn shop involving a music disc that's far more important it seems, how it ties back to 1-3 - the music disc was what the murder of that case was over - was perfectly done. The killer, Robert Crogley, being the son of the victim of 1-3 and it being revealed that he was the one who set fire to the crime scene for revenge was incredible. And of course, who would've thought that Crogley was using these discs to leak intelligence from the crown? I think the only issue with this case is that the trial drags through the middle of it, but once you get the culprit on the stand... it's hard to stop playing. It is revealed in court though, what the information on those discs were. 4 names: Professor Watson, Brett, Kazuma, Gregson. All names we know, hm...? 9/10

The only Ace Attorney without a relatively weaker case, even the second which has no trial introduces Hr. Sholmes and the dances of deduction which are always a riot (albeit very easy). Also the fourth case while technically the traditional filler episode introduces Soseki Natsume, possibly my favourite defendant in the whole series. The other new characters are great too, the prosecutor included without having any particular story arc about him (I assume saved for part two). Setting it in the distant past was a great move to force the writers to not recycle half the characters from earlier games.Little of this series is interactive so I'll limit myself to this: the jury system works much better here than in Apollo, and cross-examining multiple witnesses doesn't change the trial process significantly but allows for more interactions between the characters at other times.
I'd call this the best I've played since Trials and Tribulations but I'll have to play the second to be completely sure.

This is my concise review of "The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures" having played the "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" trilogy before. The game starts off with a really boring first chapter that drags for way too long. The last case in particular drags for way too long taking almost a third of the total play time. The story gets side-tracked a lot. The addition of the jury is stupid and annoying almost like the addition of the Monokuma Kubs in Danganronpa V3 but way worse. The game has the weakest antagonist in the series. While some characters are good, the witnesses/jurors cast doesn't hold a candle to the original PW. The main cast consisting of you and your friends (and your clients) was a redeeming quality. My ranking for episodes is as follows: E4, E2, E3, E5, E1.
Hopefully, we get better cases, better writing, and less slow-paced progression in the future (Well, Apollo Justice is already written but I haven't played it because it wasn't released on PC).

Great new Addition to Phoenix Wright universe. Great graphics, character designs, art and music. Dance of Deduction and sumation examinations are cool additions to the formula. Excelent story that tied all cases together and has an overarching plot that moves beyond to the sequel. One of the best entries in the franchise for sure.Updated 3 Years Ago

Thanks to Scarlet Study for translating this game, making it available to Europeans and Americans alike! This is probably the best Ace Attorney game I've played gameplay-wise. Lots of situations that trip you up, lots of unused evidence increasing the difficulty of presenting the correct one, and lots of mechanics from other games all added into one. Now for the meat of the game though: The story. It's pretty solid and sets up some pretty interesting stuff, but they seem to have saved the reveal of all that for the second part, leaving this game finished at a really unsatisfying point. I was looking forward to see the what's happening. The story arc that does conclude in this game is decent, but I'm bummed about having to wait for the second game to be translated.Updated 3.5 Years Ago

I'm a huge Ace Attorney fan, so I enjoyed this game for the most part, but this is definitely the weakest game in the series for me.The overall story is mostly great, but it feels too much like a prologue to be completely satisfying. There are 5 episodes and I would rank them as follows from best to worst: 5 > 3 > 1 > 4 > 2. I liked every episode except for the 2nd one, and this is the first Ace Attorney game where I actually disliked an episode, but I'll get to why later. The characters were very hit or miss. I didn't really care for most of the main cast at first, but they all grew on me by the end, except for Herlock Sholmes. I absolutely couldn't stand him, even though he does have some good moments. Plus, my two favorite characters, who I liked immediately, get written out of the game after episode 2, which was sad.
The gameplay is largely the same as in previous Ace Attorney games: you have investigation segments and courtroom segments. Courtroom segments are always awesome and this game is no different. The most fun I had while playing this was always the courtroom segments. But it did bother me that Ryunosuke gets caught off guard and slams his back into the wall almost every time that the prosecutor questions his logic. This is understandable due to his character but it was still annoying. There are some new mechanics in the court segments, like questioning multiple witnesses at the same time and the summation examination, which I both really enjoyed.
Investigation segments, on the other hand, are a chore. I always liked them in previous games, but the ones in this game weren't fun for me, primarily due to a new gameplay mechanic: the dance of deduction. This "minigame" involves Herlock deducing something about a character for 5 minutes and then you have to go back over his points and fix them while the character just stands there. Almost every fix is the same: you turn the camera to behind the character and then you choose the object that you can now see. It's incredibly easy, so it gets really old, really quickly. Plus, the whole mechanic feels forced, like it was included to justify Herlock's character. The reason I didn't like case 2 at all is because the whole case is an investigation segment, and it introduces this stupid deduction minigame.
There are a few other complaints I have with this game. While I really liked the graphics and animations, I felt that the breakdowns were pretty tame and boring. Another thing I didn't like is the localization. This game takes place in the early 1900s, so I get why the characters speak the way they do, but the dialogue isn't as charming as it is in the previous Ace Attorney games and I didn't find any of the "banter" to be funny. Plus, there are also some weird decisions, like everyone saying "haah" to indicate a sigh or random changes in the way characters refer to each other, like Ryunosuke calling Susato "Miss Susato" when they speak to each other, even when they're alone, but then randomly calling her "Susato-san" in his head. I also didn't like the voice acting. Every actor sounds awkward, like they're unfamiliar with voice acting. And finally, the PC port is pretty rough unless you install the "essential improvements" from the PC Gaming Wiki. I definitely recommend installing the DGS Hack at least, or else the game runs at 30 fps and it hurts to look at.
Overall, while this game is enjoyable for the most part, there are a lot of issues that bothered me and that's why I feel that it is the weakest entry in the series.

Having have beaten the entire mainline hexology, this title would have to do a LOT to impress me and honestly...…well It didn't shake me all that much.gameplay wise it's ace attorney once again with 2 distinct differences. one is the deductions with Sholmes which if I'm being honest were a fucking slog. Every single time the deduction was something that was either behind the object Sholmes pointed at or was on the other side of said object. The answer was always pretty obvious after the first deduction so I wish they just combined the deductions into one clean clue.
Second is the summation examination which I guess was a pretty neat mechanic where you pit two contradictory statements made by two jurors to persuade them to continue the trial. While not a terrible mechanic it didn't feel all that impactful and in the end felt like a simple prolonging of the already long trials.
pacing in this game is slow as balls, by the time you, the player put all the pieces together you're only halfway through the trial. Yahtzee Croshaw put it best when he said he both loves and hates the ace attorney series because he feels clever when he solves the puzzle but the game takes 40 million years to get to the point of the clue you solved eons ago.
Difficulty wise It's actually pretty fair. There was only ever one time where I had to google what the answer to one cross examination was and the answer was something that made me say "well at least I was definitely on track". Definitely more forgiving than Apollo Justice. All in all if the investigations were narrowed down quicker and there was less dialogue during the summation examinations I have no doubt you could shave like 5 hours off this game without losing anything.
But now lets get to the great parts of the game. The characters. Every single character oozes personality from the jittery behavior of Ryunosuke, the serene grace of Susato, the cosmic dick energy of Kazuma and my favorite two characters Sholmes and Iris make this a game with incredible characters. While in other ace attorney games there were parts that made me chuckle, there were moments in chronicles that made me straight up laugh hard. Another thing I appreciate is the dark subtext hidden behind the entirety of the game, by the end there are still like 6 things that didn't get fully fleshed out and leaves you on edge, ready to take on the second game.
All in all this game was a 7/10 gameplay wise but a pretty damn strong 9/10 for characters which as a result make me give this game an 8/10 for some nice middle ground. I already completed the first trial of the second game so I look forward to finally breaking the veil of darkness that surrounds this game.

Really fun game. Honestly the only flaw is rough pacing, but it is realllllyy rough. The trial portions are fun and exciting, and it is very satisfying when you immediately know the answer. Some answers are more clear than others, but I don’t think there was ever a point where an answer felt unfair based off the information available to you.
However, in my opinion, the investigation portions are super boring and slow. They serve an important role in fleshing out the characters and getting you fully invested in the story ahead of the trial, so I don’t think they should be removed entirely. However, they could easily be shortened to the game’s benefit. In fact, by cutting down on redundant dialogue and slimming down the investigation portions, I think you could easily cut off five hours of the run time and boost the game’s score to a 9/10.
Besides pacing, I only have minor complaints. It would be nice to have a bit more frequent player interaction, but I guess that’s not really the type of game it’s going for. It’s a bit annoying when your proposed evidence is rejected because you just haven’t triggered the correct piece of dialogue beforehand. I would have appreciated an option to move thru text a bit faster, but the available speed is more than bearable.
The story itself is tons of fun. Satisfying mysteries mixed in with campy humor and anime-style overreactions keep the game fun despite minimal player interaction. The main cast of characters is very endearing. Herlock Sholmes annoyed me at first, but he quickly became one of my favorite ever characters.
The music is excellent. The Pursuit theme is a new favorite video game OST. The character designs are diverse and distinct. The graphics are surprisingly good looking for an upresed 3DS game. The voice acting is more than solid, tho I would have appreciated a lot more of it.

I've finished all the other Ace Attorney games besides Great Ace Attorney 1 & 2, and I have to say that Great Ace Attorney: Adventures is one of the better games in the series! The setting and time period offer a lot of interesting changes to the formula, the art design and music are great as always, and the characters are quite likeable and differentiate themselves well enough from the classic Ace Attorney cast. The writing was good as always, with expectedly convoluted cases that were intriguing and ultimately fairly logical (if unlikely), and every case was quite strong I felt. I also felt as though there was a stronger cohesiveness of the overall story in this game compared to most of the others, which I appreciated. I also have to give a shoutout to the translation/localization efforts, as there are a lot of great obscure 19th century words dropped here and there, and the very much Japanese nature of Ryunosuke and Susato is not shied away from, with plenty of Japanese culture references maintained.Overall, Great Ace Attorney: Adventures easily cracks the Top 5 in the series for me I think. It's quite well put together, and it's an easy recommendation for Ace Attorney fans. I'm looking forward to making my way through the sequel!

Ace Attorney series is really the best of this genre and this game in particular takes it to another level. It contains all the cool mechanics from previous games. The only missing part for me is the fact of not being able to walk between the environment as on the spin-off (Miles Edgeworth). But even with that, it is the best of the series, the hystorical elements from Japan and Great britain were all very well made and also a beautifully soundtrack as the series deserves.
Tow form the Five cases has some endings that could be better, but the main plot is really interesting, letting its hype for the sequel (which I will play it yet).

Pretty good game. Definitely feels like your average Ace Attorney game, just set in a new time period. Overall pretty good, but there were several unanswered questions (likely answered in the second game). I was half expecting Edgeworth to appear in the last case. Speaking of which, unlike the other AA games, the last case felt way less impactful and significant (obviously we don't need something on the scale of spirit of justice every time, but last cases like AAI2 and AA3 really show how good a last case can be)Updated 5 Years Ago

Struggled between a 7 and an 8 for this one, but decided to round up, factoring in my undying love for the series. In many ways it feels like it just exists to set up the sequel since most of the main characters' dramatic arcs are halted mid-swing, but I think it makes up for that with some of the brilliant new gameplay mechanics, like the closing arguments and, of course, Holmes' deductions (which may be the single best gimmick the series has introduced).Updated 5.5 Years Ago

fuckin amazing, as good as the ds onesthough it does lack some content and it is barebones, still fuckin amazing, but lacking something, you won't feel satisfied when you finish it, cause I assume the second game just continues where it left one and the both of them just basically make one whole game.
Better to wait for DGS 2 to be translated, than play the both of them to have the full SOUL experience
on it's own, probably worth 70 or 80% but I really enjoyed myself, alongside DGS 2 which I assume will give me the answers I want and the satisfactory conclusion I should've had, then it's definitely worth a 90% cause it's gud.
Blows every other 3ds AA game out the water, except maybe the Layton spinoff
