Amazing game for it's time. Really interesting Japanese tuning cars - Supra, R33 GTR, RX7, Impreza, FTO/GTO, NSX. Used the Stock Dodge Viper to farm credits in the Normal Car Cup - extremely wheel spinny and slidy.
I enjoyed the Cerbera and the Concept car was extremely OP and satisfying to use. Early to mid game quite frustrating - learning to drive, struggling through the license tests - B4 took me 100+ attempts, extremely frustrating. Somehow managed a B3 gold relatively easy.
Wore our my left thumbstick from turning. Also either disk is bad or the PS1 is dying because game keep failing to load, and needing open/close cover to reload.

Gran Turismo

Pontos positivos:

- Gráficos: São excelentes, destaque para a modelagem dos carros que é extremamente detalhada, é notável também a iluminação e reflexos do jogo tanto no vidro quanto na lataria do carro, que fica ainda mais bonita nas pistas a noite, que por sua vez também são bem ricas em detalhes;
- Missões: Temos as licenças que podemos fazer de início, que são boas mas tem seus erros, também copas e eventos com carros específicos e particularidades que determinam qual carro pode correr naquele torneio, que são divertidos, nos dão um carro após o término e definiu o padrão da saga até hoje;
- Dirigibilidade: Inovadora para sua época, em geral envelheceu bem com a sua física diferenciada, com algumas ressalvas, sendo este jogo o que se aproximava mais de um simulador de corrida;
- Carros: A lista é razoável se for analisar com o olhar de hoje, mas para seu tempo possui uma boa lista e com grande foco em montadoras japonesas. Um modelo bem marcante sem dúvida é o Dodge Viper;
- Pistas: Os diversos circuitos que o jogo nos entrega são muito bem detalhados e bonitos, que vão desde o asfalto até a arquibancada com torcida. As pistas que ocorrem à noite particularmente são as mais notáveis e com uma bela iluminação;
- Trilha sonora: A faixa de músicas da versão japonesa do Gran Turismo é muito boa, com músicas icônicas nos menus da Toyota, Subaru e entre outras, a da versão americana é razoável;
- Customização: Tem até que bastante item para modificar e melhorar no carro, no que diz respeito a performance, algo incrível para a época.

Pontos negativos:

- Licenças: Tem três tipos de licenças, B, A e IA, o problema delas é que o nível de dificuldade é absurdamente alto da licença A pra cima, a direção de boa parte dos carros que corremos é difícil de guiar, com poucos graus de esterçamento e não há um mapa para se guiar na pista. Outro ponto é a falta de recompensas com medalhas abaixo das de ouro;
- Freios: Alguns carros os freios são extremamente sensíveis, ao ponto que ao apertar o botão e o carro estando não totalmente reto, isso já é suficiente para perder o controle do carro e girar;

Played on the DuckStation emulator. I'm referring to the Simulation mode in this review, NOT the Arcade mode.

Story: N/A/100 - Doesn't apply.

Gameplay:85/100 - Gran Turismo 1 had an incredibly in-depth career mode for it's time. You have to pass license tests and acquire different licenses to unlock events. You also have to manage your credits well, deciding which cars are worth purchasing and which aren't, if you wanna buy them new or used and the tuning parts too. For 1997, this career mode was groundbreaking, and is still impressive and enjoyable to this day.

As for the handling itself, it is pretty good. A little rough around the edges though. Cars will start slipping and loosing traction if you so much as think about steering just a bit whike braking, which is something you have to get used to. Other than that, once you get a feel for it, the handling can be quite satisfying.

Also, you can choose from 180 licensed cars, which was at the time the highest car count of any game. Although there is a big focus on the Japanese Domestic Market, with 6 out of the 10 car manufacturers being Japanese, the other four being two British and two American manufacturers respectively, and those four manufacturers also have a lot less cars than the Japanese.

There are only 7 tracks, albeit most of them have multiple layouts to make up for that.

As I already mentioned, there is car tuning, however only performance tuning. Tuning can be a bit overwhelming at first, but it is pretty much necessary especially if you intend to complete all championships.

Speaking of which, regarding the championships I would recommend either looking at the specific championship on the Gran Turismo wiki and check the usual opponents to have an idea of what car to use and how to tune it, as the game unfortunately doesn't really tell you what you're up against. If you're playing on an emulator, you can also use save states instead.

Visuals: 75/100 - The visuals hold up quite well, and honestly feel very charming and nostalgic. Sure, the render distance isn't the best and the emulator also offers a lot of enhancements that the game wouldn't have on original hardware, but it still looks quite good.

Performance: 70/100 - On original hardware, Gran Turismo 1 ran at 30 fps with some frame drops. On DuckStation, it can be run at a stable 60 fps.

Audio: 80/100 - Let's start with the soundtrack. The OST is quite good. Every dealership has it's own theme. The music in races also is pretty decent, however it starts repeating itself quite quickly, and therefore can get annoying.

As for the overall sound design, its good. The engine sounds aren't the greatest obviously, but still pretty damn solid for a PS1 title. Additionally hearing your tires skid also makes the game more immersive in a way.

Bugs: 90/100 - The only "bug" that I can recall is an AI car getting stuck on a barrier near the pit exit on one of the endurance races. Other than that, nothing.

Overall: 80/100

Length:
10-12h - Story Only
13-15h - Story + Some Sides
16-24h - 100%
(Not accounting for Arcade Mode)

TL;DR: Gran Turismo 1 had a massive impact on racing games, and was revolutionary especially in terms of career and car count, making it one of the most critically acclaimed PS1 titles. If you're a fan of the series, I highly recommend giving it a try, but even if you're not I would still recommend if you don't mind the aged visuals. Although I had a little bit of trouble getting into the game initially, I really enjoyed once I did, and as I stated above, I would highly recommend checking the Gran Turismo Wiki for the championships to get a good idea of your opponents. If that is too bothersome for you, I'd recommend skipping this one.

Gran Turismo is a groundbreaking racing game that set the standard for the genre. The game's realistic driving physics and detailed car models were revolutionary at the time of its release. The wide variety of cars and tracks offered players an unparalleled level of choice. The game's single-player mode was challenging and rewarding, pushing players to improve their driving skills. The graphics, while dated by today's standards, were impressive for their time and contributed to the game's immersive experience. The soundtrack added to the intensity of the races, enhancing the overall gameplay. Gran Turismo is a classic that laid the foundation for future racing games.

I have to say, I was pretty surprised with how this game turned out to be. I was not expecting to be this satisfied with it. (I did play on an emulator with a 60FPS patch, however.)

The car selection is big (for the time) and features not only sports cars but primarily focuses on normal road cars. Throughout the game, it was quite satisfying to get credits, upgrade your cars and receive new ones as a reward for the championships. This worked well within the progression which was also nice — albeit the endgame with the endurance races feels a bit too dull.

The graphics were also something I enjoyed, but I get that this is more of a personal preference. It definitely gives the game more of an identity, looking at it from a modern standpoint. It feels like they really got the most out of what they had to work with regarding the hardware of the PS1.

Now, for the most important part, the driving physics. They are still pretty good for most of the time. They can freak out a bit after you drive over a curb quickly which can send you flying into a corner if you're not careful, but other than that, they aged pretty well. I don't have anything to complain about here that much.

As for the negatives, some of the licence tests were ridiculously hard to get gold in. (It doesn't have to be easy, but it just felt like a bit too much.) Next, the track list is solid, but it would be nice to have just a little bit more. The tracks can get repetitive later on and this is made worse by the fact that if you, especially in the early game, don't spend your money wisely, you might need to grind for some time.

It isn't for everybody, but I do think that if you are a fan of racing games and can appreciate older ones, give the original Gran Turismo a try.

A great first outing for this legendary series. Driving feels surprisingly good for the time, with a really nice sense of weight and control. My big complaint was with the brakes, which tends to send any car into a spin if you apply the slightest amount of steering, which just felt awful. I liked how challenging the game is to begin with, making you really consider the best use of your money, though you do feel the lack of cars and races compared to other games. Overall though, lots of fun.

I mostly played this because the OST for the japanese version slaps really hard and I wanted to know what sim racing was all about since I'm mostly an arcade racer sort of guy. All in all, I'd say this was pretty eye-opening to play. More realism and less arcade wackiness means that taking corners involves properly balancing your car and not just ripping through drifts like an insane person. While I personally still believe that arcade racers are more entertaining due to their focus on fun over realism, I definitely still think that both genres have their place in the gamer world with their own unique personal appeals. All in all, I enjoyed what I played, and would definitely reccomend it to anyone with a PS1 lying around that likes cars.

I still can't tell the difference between different breeds of car tho

Nothing much to say, its quite a solid racing game. The insane details you can get into with your cars is excellent such as fine tuning every single part of your car to the way you like it and picking between different types of upgrades really make the car feel more like its your little mistake than the games. And the game has an alright selection of cars to pick from, though some more brands would be nice. The racing itself is quite good as well as you weave in and around corners, it can feel pretty satisfying to cut a corner almost perfectly and fly out of a corner.

Map wise, while limited, Gran Turismo 1 has a good selection of courses to pick from. One of my favorites being Deep Forest with its weaving roads and gorgeous sunset, it has such a nice flow to it. The only stages I have an issue with are the ones that show up too frequently as some outstayed their welcome. Speaking of that, I hope you like repetitive. Unfortunately due to the small amount of race courses you will expect to have done everything Gran Turismo has to offer very quickly, and with a lot of races to do you will find it outstays its welcome in this regard. I would honestly recommend doing at least the GT Cup's and some special races but not all of them.

The UI is also a bit of a mixed bag for me, as while the UI is quite nice looking and nails the sort of early 00's website browsing vibe, its very clunky and not the most intuitive UI. For example, while upgrading my car and going through the menu's, the cursor automatically places itself over the races shortcut which can be annoying to have to navigate back to the car manufacture to start buying upgrades again.

Overall, I think its a solid racing game but it very clearly has the "first game of the series" stink to it, but shows a promising future as they have shown they have the fundamentals down, the rest is nailing that.

gameplay - 3/5
music - 3/5
appearance - 3/5
story - car go fast
difficulty - Medium, mostly boils down to picking the fastest car.

skeleton rating: no skeletons present.
overall rating: 3/5 - Good
