It's truly amazing how well this game has held up despite the leaps forward in the genre since its release. System Shock 2 has a very specific and palpable atmosphere and absolutely nails the dark sci-fi feel. It's a shame then that the clunkiness of the game has been left intact and the controls have not been optimised for play on consoles. Plus, there's so many issues with the online co-op ranging from innocuous visual glitches to full game crashes. A great experience, but with significant caveats.Updated 1 Month Ago

Really cool setting and villains. Cool weapons, satisfying AR, Shotgun and Grenade Launcher. Cool boss fights. Some minor backtracking, getting lost (but more to do with me not reading/listening. Much better guidance than first. Ending was nostalgic going back to Citadel Station starting area.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

while i had fun with this game; i don't think it lived up to the hype installed in me by its legendary reputation. the shooting was weird and the enemy variety didn't really shine until the end of the game. the plot twist was cool af and the story was interesting; i really liked the different "factions" competing on the von braun. the ending was kinda lackluster with the boss fights being meh at best. the cliffhanger ending was cool tho and its very unfortunate that we never got a 3rd game. hopefully with this remaster enough interest will be sparked to fund it finally.Updated 2 Months Ago

This is actually my third time completing System Shock 2, so other than being on my Top 5 games of all time this time around I'd like to give a try to Nightdive's new remaster to see how this keyboard-heavy title would work on a joystick, so I'll only comment on how it transitioned to the console (my console of choice was the Xbox Series X) rather than making some in-depth review. Fortunately, I can assure new and old players that the transition from a PC-only game to consoles was quite smooth, and it's just as good as the PC version of the 1999 classic. I absolutely loved the hot keys for both psy and weapons, and how you can even switch between different types of ammo by just using the d-pad. Hacking, reparing, modifying etc also works quite fluently on the joystick - and believe it or not, I even preferred using a video game controller whilst hacking stuff. The remaster also adds not only improved visuals and good network support, but also a bunch of documented development stuff that is a treat for die-hard SS2 fans (and I'm part of this equation), and even re-added some audios logs and minor stuff cut from the final 1999 release according to these same files. The new reloading annimations are also a nice touch absent in the original release, and the improved graphics and textures also make this game with charming without losing its original essence and/or making drastic changes to its gameplay
Right after finishing the game for the third time, it was not just satisfying, but I felt like playing this game a fourth time. It's one of those games that stick with you forever. And man, what an experience.
Pros:
* Extremely balanced gameplay. Lots of ways of solving certain situations or dealing with enemies;
* Level design is flawless;
* Perfect skill, RPG based system;
* Spot-on sound design
* Haunting and creepy atmosphere that still manages to scare you without cheap jumpscares, even with dated visuals for 2025.
* A rich, very well-developed sci-fi world with a ton of context and background, and a well-developed story.
* The Nightdive console variant/port is perfect if you are aiming to play this with a joystick.
Cons:
* None.
Recommend for both new and old SS2 fans. Ignoring this title should be considered a crime for any gamer.
Conclusion: 10 out of 10, obviously.

Graphics - Remastered version made the graphics playable. Still dated but smoothed out with the og art styleStability/Performance - Runs perfectly. No bugs and easily run on integrated graphics
Sound/ Music - Incredible sound design that is way ahead of its time. Music is good but doesnt fit the games horror vibe
Voice - Every data log is voiced perfectly. Shodan and the Many are this awesomely voiced enemy constantly in your ears.
World - World building through data logs and other lore really bring the von braun to life
Story - Simple but effective story. Now would be very clique
Gameplay - Gameplay is basic but the RPG elements are very thought out and make unique playstyles
Overall - Outstanding game that was way ahead of its time and set up the immersive sim genre. Bioshock, deus ex, prey, dishonored all came from this team and it shows. There is elements in here of all those modern titles.

Wowie! This game hooked me, I started playing it yesterday and I haven’t stopped all weekend. For a 90s game, it has a surprisingly little among of jank, which was nice. It really felt like an old version of Bioshock, because that’s exactly what it is. I don’t really have that many problems with the game, apart from turrets being really annoying, and the ending where I used up all my ammo to kill the many, and I didn’t have anything left for the Shodan fight. Also I feel the the Shodan fight was a bit underwhelming. Also, the soundtrack for this game is awesome! I’ve been meaning to play this game for years, and I’m glad I finally did.Updated 5.5 Months Ago

Really cool game and has aged amazingly. Music was great, combat was fine unlike many games from its time, levels were interesting with a useful map etc.The story was a great ride, while the ending was a bit absurd, learning info through the logs and the emails from Polito was very fun and i loved the twists.

Holy fuck this is good. I'm glad I jumped into THIS instead of Infinite after Bioshock2.UPDATE: so ive beaten it now. but i had to bring down the score. the last, i wanna say, quarter? of this game is complete bullshit. that final shodan fight is fucking garbage. as is the entire flesh dungeon before that. it was infuriating. and im playing this on normal! i made it eventually, but holy fuck it got unfair and stupid after awhile.
also i swear to satan that the game ended at least 4 times. maybe im just ultra inexperienced with old school games (tbf i am) but it fucking DRAGGED at the end, and i was dying ALOT. what kind of insane person plays this on hard or insane or whatever?
also what the hell is the completion criteria for this? i was corner scratching the entire time, found lots of shit, does that mean i got 100%? i think it does.
whatever, that ending was infuriating, but the 75-80% before that was super fun and interesting!
ive now beaten every Shock game :) (except the remake, ill get to that at some point)
UPDATE: i was so angry when i finished that game that i didnt gush about the incredibly well done narrative (how it builds off the first System Shock game, and works to subvert/explore the themes) excellent sound design and voice acting (much more solid than the first game, but i kinda loved how shitty some of it was)
and i didnt listen to the soundtrack at all cuz i didnt care :) (though i do love electronica, i am a dj. i just wanted to listen to my own stuff)
its like taking me TIME to process this game fully, it was such an experience: disgusting; stressful; intriguing; captivating; it was so much.
i think i love this game, and it very well could be my favourite Shock game now, just because of its depth.
next time im playing it on easy though, and maybe ill try with a controller. that last 20-15% was fucking bullshit.

Moving onto the game that became highly influential to immersive-sim games, I had a blast with this one. I did have to install some visual mods and some patches as I heard some bugs that can be annoying to deal with, so I recommend doing that before you start.To start things off, much simpler and easier HUD to work with over the 1st game. Less clicking is involved as it only takes one click to acquire an item. There are shortcut keys to use, but I find that difficult for me to work with, because I often forget where they are at times, and I'm only used to the main ones.
The biggest standout of this game is the use of RPG-like elements. Choosing which stats you want to upgrade as you progress, whether standard, tech, weapons, or psionics. You can't invest in everything so choose wisely. I went with the Navy route as my starting class, as I hear it's the much easier one, and I can see why, as the game offers a lot of stuff to hack early on. Admittedly, I did look up some guides for a good build as I heard that having a poor build can make your journey much more difficult, and that was something I did not want to deal with. If you do want some challenge at least, go for Marine for focusing on strength and weapons early on, however, OSA is a much more difficult starting class as it focuses on psionics from what I heard, and is ill-advised.
Level design is quite solid, as each area offers a wide amount of exploration and rewarding aspects like hacking door codes, hacking security, hacking crates, chemical rooms for research, and upgrade stations. The Von Braun is nice setting although I do prefer SS1’s areas in terms of memorable areas since they were more colorful, making it easier to remember. The music however, kicks ass, and while it may lack in the visual department, it makes up for the sound department. The creepy slow atmospheric stuff and the intense electronic mix are what made some of them memorable. The Body of Many might be tough for some since there is no map, but I find navigating through to be manageable. It's the enemies there I find a bit tough. The ghost visions in some areas are a neat concept but felt like a miss opportunity for some puzzle-solving elements rather than thrown in for environmental storytelling.
I did like the amount of stuff you can research like the exotic weapons or other items. However, I'm not a fan of how researching something I put points into, leads to researched item requires another set of points in a different class after. It felt pointless and a waste of modules. Onto hacking, the challenge of it can be thrown away by simply just quicksaving before opening. It is randomized at least, but if you want some challenge of not screwing up, then don't use it.
Weapons feel good to use, like the assault rifle or shotgun, and depending on what level you put into your weapons stats, they can become powerful throughout. You're also given alternate ammo options as they are meant for certain enemies. Standard for everything as it's weak, anti-personal for flesh enemies, and anti-armor for metal enemies. What balances it out is having the degrading mechanic, where the more you use it, its quality decreases and breaks once it hits 0. This encourages you to use your weapons wisely, unless you invest points into repair. If not, the tools to fix or modify aren’t so commonly found, so try not to use them a lot and focus on melee. The wrench works damn well as someone who invests a lot in strength. While I don't use Psionic's at all, the amount of abilities it gives you is quite good and makes me wish I invested in some to experiment.
Enemy variety is fine, you'll commonly encounter hybrids, turrets, monkeys, midwives, and some creatures of The Many later on, though I do wish there was more variation within robots and cyborgs like in SS1. I find the turrets annoying because they can still hit you when trying to peek out of cover. Those spiders you fight later on become a pain in the ass, especially trying to melee them, as they do some serious toxic damage. Trying to hit anything below you feels awkward because its hitbox feels like it never registers.
Voice acting in audio logs sounds much better. Reading and listening as you discover how certain events led to what happened in the Von Braun added some neat lore and creepy stuff where you hear characters being infected or killed. SHODAN is still great to hear, especially The Many for its haunting voice. The final boss feels a bit troublesome but manageable to deal with because of the use of hacking and the clicking you have to do as you're being attacked.
Overall, while it differs from the previous game and me having some personal preferences from the previous, it does a good job on its own and going into my favorites. If you like some aspects of survival horror mixed with RPG, try this one for sure. It'll be some time before the Enhanced Edition comes out soon.

This game is awesome but not without flaws. The story is really fun to follow through the audio logs, but it really takes a nosedive at the end. My biggest complaint is that it's really easy to build yourself into a corner. It's not always clear what skills will be the most useful or which ones will be practically useless.
Despite all of the problems I have with this game, I did play through it almost 3 times in a row. That should speak for how good it is.

I played System Shock 2 for the first time in 2019 skeptical about being a better game than the original Deus Ex, which is also one of my favorite games. I wanted something similar to Deus Ex, and SS2 is not only good as Deus Ex, but I could say that it's even better.I think there's not much to say. It's one of my Top 5 games of all time, and after beating this time, which is the second time beating it, I want to beat it again. The story, the aesthetic, the hybrid gameplay (RPG, survival horror, FPS), the astonishing sound design, perfect level design... It never gets old, and after beating it again, I have that feeling of "dang, I should've tried to improve different cybernetic modules instead of the ones I improved during my playthrough to try different routes", since the gameplay isn't linear like most of survival horror games.
And the horror aspect of the game... Oh gosh, they nailed it. It's hard to believe how a game released more than two decades ago with
completely ancient graphics has such a perfect way to make you feel uncomfortable and focused. Instead of opting for generic and obvious "jumpscares" that most of games used then and now, System Shock 2 performs this task in a very different manner by using extremely narrow corridors, enemies that can randomly spawn in front of you in different points, a completely refined ambient soundtrack (and I personally like to disable the music in order to make the atmosphere even more intense), and the setting of being alone in space itself. It's like the way they implemented horror in this game wasn't "forced" like we see in most of horror games trying to make you scared. It's a very "natural" sort of thing, and I could easily say that it's one of the scariest games (if not the scariest game) I've ever played (and trust me, I'm a big fan of survival horror genre).
It's January 2024, and I'm already looking forward to play the Nightdive Studios remaster, but even if they take more time to release it, I'm gonna revisit System Shock 2 many more times in my lifetime.

I think this game holds up phenomenally in 2023. Even with the dated late-90s graphics, it's occasionally far creepier than any of the BioShock games and still has vestiges of the 0451 genre (no surprises some of this team made Deus Ex). There are a few lame level design choices (like the storage levels...) and an absolutely shit-the-bed ending, but it's a fair price to pay for one of the most influential games of its time and something you can absolutely, unequivocally still play today.If you're even slightly interested in "immersive sims" (though less immersive than modern games or the aforementioned Deus Ex), then get on this.

Another fantastic system shock game. Shodan is even more menacing than in the last game. This game is overall a lot scarier too. I found myself hiding in corners, especially whenever shodan was talking to me because she is so menacing. The story here is also pretty fantastic and interesting too. The gameplay is super fun, and I loved the upgrade system, although towards the end of the game, I felt like I was running out of stuff to upgrade (I played on easy mode.) I loved slowly unlocking the station as I went, and the more I played the game the more confident I became. The ending is also great too, besides the final cutscene of course. I do feel however that the game kinda just went on too long, even though it took me less time than the original to complete. Overall, this is a fantastic horror game, that I definitely recommend you play if your a fan of RPGs or sci fi games.Updated 2 Years Ago

There are some tedious bits to it and I'd say it's a fairly "quicksave heavy" game but I can easily see myself go back to it and try out how differently I can play this one. Looking Glass Studios really didn't make any bad games huh? This one captures that immersive element of being stuck on a desolate space station while scavenging around for supplies and a path forward. System Shock 1 did this, but's it's more immersive here I think. And an overall more enjoyable experience, while still being challenging. There *are* some issues with the RPG mechanics, but it's admirable the amount of systems they put into this game. The shooting feels better, the audio logs are better acted, and the mission design is more streamlined.There's a focus on atmosphere through lighting and audio missing in it's predecessor. Citadel station looked like a graphing calculator rendering of a wireframe hell. The Van Braun, in contrast, looks like a space station. In other words, the graphics are better here. The UI also looks great, with lots of function that doesn't get in the way of it's cool aesthetics. It reminds me of Deus Ex at times. The audio is the real standout. Mutants cry out in garbled screams of their former selves saying "run away" as their bodies come running at you. Industrial fans and motor hums can be heard in the backgrounds of audio logs from people on the engineering level. The effects and polish is still impressive decades later, even if it probably isn't mixed as well as it could be today.
Gameplay is still mostly in that "immersive sim" quality. The Van Braun is huge and you always feel like you can walk from one end of the ship to the other. The level design is tight while still allowing you to get lost, which is a hard balance to strike. There's very little repeated ideas moment to moment and the game still ends up being quite large. The inventory management is alright, lots of choices to make about what to carry. The RPG mechanics have issues, mostly with how you can mess up a character build early on. Lot's of the early game is weird, but once you're a few hours into a playthrough everything settles in nicely. The weapon degradation system I'm of two minds about, most people don't like it but I'm not sure, I think it might have been a clever way to add more micromanagement tasks to keep the tension up while enemies stalk the hallways. But it definitely adds to the balance issues.
Story wise I was a little disappointed. I loved some of the audio logs of the passengers of the ship dealing with the infestation of the "many". The way you would often get details out of order was great. But the big twist didn't really lead to anything. It's mostly just another way to hand you quests and get you moving to another objective. The ending level gave me some Zen from Half-Life vibes. And a similarly disappointing boss fight.
As for some other criticisms, I feel like there were some underutilized elements. The ghosts were great atmosphere builders and I would have liked them to show up more. The power cell puzzles also didn't really happen more than twice and it feels weird that they were included at all. More instances of animated characters who are alive would have been nice, otherwise it makes it feel as if the audio logs were a technical limitation, and while they were economical, I feel like there could have been more NPCs on the ship that you physically see. Most of these are polish nitpicks, nothing substantial.
I'm very happy to have played this game, it's another classic PC game that respect the players time and intelligence. The exploration and level design were really quite great, and the atmosphere wasn't something I expected to be so modern for a game from 1999, very thrilling. I tried playing this game a few years ago and put it down due to a mix of difficulty and stress. Which is so interesting as now I find the game approachable and delightful, in the same way I'm happy to watch a good depressing movie, if anything I wish I played it on a harder difficulty (though it is challenging). It's funny that I took so long to play this one, as I'm quite fond of Thief 1 and 2. This game has a lot of similarities that put me in good spirits.

The game is good, dont get me wrong. The problem is playing the game now can feel more like a chore. Sure, the environment used to be immersive, and that made up for the somewhat bare bone story. There is a story, dont get me wrong, but so much of your time is spent picking up audio tapes and barley surviving. One of the best games I've ever played, if not the best. Irrational Games knows how to do a great immersive experience by taking the immersive sim concept Looking Glass was demonstrating with their games, and merging it with a complex FPS-RPG system where you can almost create a completely unique character everytime you play. Also, the storytelling is superb, with some thoughtful commentary from people in the game (with the help of audiologs you find while exploring the spaceship where you're trapped), and SHODAN. The opressive atmosphere is amazing too, the OST fits very well with the places you visit in the game.Nothing more to say, this game is a must.

Arguably the best '90s game I've ever played. System Shock 2 is the perfect blend between FPS, RPG and survival horror. Its cyberpunk atmosphere plays very well to the feeling of dread of technology, and the story is scattered through audio logs and emails. Meaning, the story is not enforced unto the player, it's an option for them to be immersed. The level design and game systems are way ahead of its time, and this game has aged really well (besides the graphics) even 20 years later. I found the research reports very interesting to read, especially with the use of many different real scientific terminologies, which satisfied the scientist within me.
The RPG elements are expansive, yet cohesive. There are many different combinations to playstyle, each starting from three main classes: weapons, tech and psi.
This game kept me absolutely hooked for the entirety of my playthrough, and genuinely terrified me in ways I didn't think were possible. This is one of those rare cases where games actually kept me really tense during my playthrough, and the constant flow of adrenaline within me just made it oh-so-satisfying every time I completed an objective.
Unfortunately, the final boss was mediocre at best, especially after all of the build-up leading to the final SHODAN.
Overall, this is a masterful piece of art, and definitely deserves every single ounce of praise it receives. Hopefully in the future this game will be remastered. Also, this has an active modding community (which significantly improves the graphics, I highly recommend doing that).

Deceptively linear would be a good way to describe the gameplay of System Shock 2. Similar to a Metroid game, the player is unknowingly guided towards the next objective by encountering obstacles such as locked doors and broken elevators, forcing them to explore and stumble upon what is usually a recording with information needed to progress onwards. The narrative is delivered using the same formula: through recordings scattered throughout the decks which collectively and effectively unravel the backstory of the situation at hand.There are three branches of military introduced when starting a new game, Marines, Navy, and OSA, each acting as the building blocks to your final character. Stats are chosen in a way that fleshes out the backstory of the nameless protagonist, associating a specific military training experience with his increase in say, proficiency in hacking. A simple concept, but well executed, effectively turning the nameless soldier into more of a character early on in the game.
Though pushing 20 years old, the user interface and controls are still very user friendly. Every control is well thought out and mapped to keep the hands contained over the same keys, including the quicksave feature. In contrast, all of the models have a considerably low poly count, even for the time of release (and this is coming from someone who primarily plays 90s-early 2000s games). The game more than makes up for this with the exceptional use of atmospheric tension that permeates every inch of the explorable area. There is never a feeling of safety as enemies seem to roam the decks at will, with the cultish mumblings of hybrids, the distinctive whirs of maintenance droids, and doors opening nearby all indicating their presence. Additionally, if there is a pattern to enemy spawn points and behavior, I have not discovered it, though I believe most are scripted spawns based on the player’s location.
The soundtrack is probably the game’s biggest flaw as it soils the claustrophobic, isolated feeling the ambient sounds set up with electronic music more fitting for an action sequence. There is a music volume slider that can be adjusted at any time to address this.

Completely spoiler-free review:As I am a fan of sci-fi settings, I loved the premises of the game. Despite being an old game, I think it's a style of graphic which I consider quite nice. Didn't hurt the eyes, like some games would. And I liked the artstyle and colors - nothing totally special, but no dull, empty graphics and atmosphere.
The gameplay was fun, but playing as OSA (psionic abilities instead of weapons) is quite uncomfortable, so I switched my specialization, although I wanted to play as OSA first. Love the RPG elements, which are differentiated, but not too complex (except psi-powers).
Level design was nice, especially in the last part of the game. Almost every area felt like an individual one. The atmosphere was great and, as a Half-Life fan, I sometimes had a feeling similar to HL. The areas were quite detailed (and very good comparing to the lifeless, detail-lacking levels of Deus Ex..)
The story, mostly carried on by logs, was great. Clearly has a great "supervillain". Many mysteries at the beginning that are solved step by step.
But concerning the end of the story, I'm not quite sure how to rate it. I liked most of the parts of the ending. But one little thing was just ridiculous (but impairing the atmosphere imo). And I didn't like another turn of the story at the end either (Addition: I thought about it over and over again, now I have to say, it now makes sense to me. So this part actually is good now, too.). But all in all, the story and the end were very good.
I would really recommend the game to gamers that are interested in action RPGs, sci-fi settings, the theme of artificial intelligence and/or playing old games/milestones.
SS2 continues the SS1 story, but it's not absolutely necessary to play SS1. Even for me, someone who likes old games, it was a bit too old-fashioned. High difficulty and maybe hard-to-digest graphics. See my SS1 review on HLTB for more.
Note: SS3 is in development, also a SS1 remake. One should consider playing the old games until SS3 is released.

I don't usually play FPS's, but it's still a pretty fun game. I do feel as though the antagonist was way more hyped up than it actually was.Updated 9 Years Ago

For it's time, this was an incredible game. Even 14 years later, it still impresses. This title was was ahead of it's time. I'm ashamed I hadn't played it sooner. It begins kinda tough when you're still vulnerable and poorly armed. That doesn't last long though and the game really pick up the pace. High marks for interesting, thoughtful level design that was believable and unique. Each deck had a personality and a purpose.Updated 9 Years Ago

Pretty good game, however dated. Though I'm guessing if you're into these types of games, you've already played it. Interesting story and good level design. Played through with no psi however, using only energy and standard weapons.Updated 10 Years Ago

One of the best first person shooters i've ever played. +Combat, Story, Music, Characters, Atmosphere, Ending
-Lack of gun variety for exotic,energy and heavy, some missions near the end require a lot of backtracking

Very well made game. Overall not too "scary," but certainly atmospheric (though I will admit, I did jump a few times). Ridiculously hard if you don't use quicksaves often.Updated 11 Years Ago
