Finally learning why silent hill is as renowned as it is truly was an experience. Finally figuring out how to play the game via emulatioan (As they for somereason dont let me buy it anywhere legally) it was truly an experience playing one of gaming's classic horror games, and with a remake announced around the corner im excited to commit to this franchise in the longrun.

Pros:
- The atmosphere was something i dont think i've yet to experience before with the fear of losing a save & walking into a room and hearing metal pipes or children screaming really gave off the fearful energy they seemingly desired.
- The Puzzles Although good in some instance sometimes were just downright stupid with the paintings being titled light and so you use the camera in your inventory to solve the puzzle. Although stupid did keep me on my toes in general as not knowing what may connect to what as the nightmare realm has seemingly no reason attached to it is such an ingenius game design
- The lore: to be honest this part is more of an outside pro as i learned about it via social media and other means but the concept of a place being the manifestations of your inner trauma and fears is SUCH a cool decision.

Cons:
- Midwich: trauma incarnate. Im gonna be honest with this review as most if not all my complaints would be targeted at midwich in general as it brought me to me knees as i had no ammo, the little children were blowing me every five milliseconds i needed to get by & the boss dont even get me started. (im gonna get started)
- Midwich Boss: This boss was a Sponge meaning It'd divide any attack you did by a million it felt & the only way to defeat it was to shoot it when its mouth opened in the second phase with teh shotgun around ~2-3 times as it would tank anything else you through at it. Main issue with the opening is that the way the controls go and the timing of the openieng you must be willing to risk your life as the attack is an instant kill no matter what so the risk to reward wasnt fair as it was the only outlet.

Silent Hill was my first foray into the survival horror genre, i was left thoroughly impressed by the game's haunting atmosphere and chilling sound design, it's amazing how a PS1 game released in 1999 is able to invoke such feelings of fear without relying on jump scares.
The atmosphere of Silent Hill is second to none, the eerie fog that has enveloped the town coupled together with the static of the radio indicating the presence of a nearby creature is truly horrifying, knowing that there is something very close by and you cannot see it.
Silent Hill's sounds design is the glue that holds all the elements of this game together, Akira Yamaoka's soundtrack evokes feelings of dread and anxiety, especially while in the otherworld, however upon returning from the otherworld you are filled with a sense of relief, you almost feel happy you've returned to Silent hill as odd as that sounds.

While Silent Hill does manage to excel in key areas, it also falls short in a few categories as well, the clunky camera which sometimes amplifies the intense horror moments can prove to be rather annoying especially during combat sequences, the voice acting in this game is awful to put it plainly, the monotone and lifeless performances really leave a lot to be desired, fortunately the amount of cutscenes that are voiced are fairly sparse so it does not hinder the game too much.

To conclude, Silent Hill is a very good game and a cornerstone of not just the survival horror genre but the psychological horror genre also, while it does show it age in certain areas, the excellent sound design paired with the chilling environments and mysterious lore is enough to warrant a playthrough.

The combat and design is simplified quite a bit (compared to RE) to focus on exploration and story. It's very rudimentary. Some gameplay moments did really surprise. Like shifts in environment. I would argue out of the original trilogy, this one has the best gameplay from the exploration, level design, puzzles, enemy variety. Maybe the combat is nothing but it's over with pretty much instantly. What's important is to render a feeling and it works fabulously. The PS1 graphics and resolution really add to this abstract element. I'd argue the atmosphere could not be replicated in a modern game or if you decide to upscale this in a emulator. Sound design is truly unique with its soundtrack and ambiance. Also way ahead of its time with its use of camera angles. The game is generally linear which maybe goes against the genre. The story does give you enough to go on but also leaves everything else vague and up to interpretation. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

Slow, clunky controls. Horrible camera. Vague but interesting story. Terrible voice acting. Easy to miss key items and plot progressions. Puzzles were excellent. Needed a guide at points. Missed shotgun initially. Final boss fight was hilarious as I had so much healing I just tanked and unloaded.

This was great, I love the core gameplay it's weirdly addicting. My only real complaint is the story, I think the cult plot isn't that interesting and the ending was also very rushed. This is fixed though in the sequel where its more focused on the town rather than explaining everything. Also the characters weren't the most interesting either especially compared with 2 but the gameplay really makes me like it.

It had been years since I'd played a Silent Hill game, and I had completely forgotten how addictive it can be. I beat it in two afternoons. Honestly, I still don't like the tank controls at all; they feel super clunky and sometimes take you out of the moment. But hey, I guess it's part of the retro charm.

What struck me the most was how mysterious and bizarre everything is, I didn't remember it being like that. The music is incredible. I'm not sure if I'd call it "bizarre," but it definitely has that psychological vibe that keeps you in a state of constant tension. The sound design is brutal, you feel like something awful is about to happen or something is going to jump out at you, but most of the time, nothing does. I think I counted only three or four real jump scares in the entire game, but the rest of the time you're on edge, just waiting for the worst.

It's incredible how the game makes you uncomfortable without resorting to cheap screams every five minutes, like many horror games today. Here, the fear comes more from the atmosphere and psychological tension.

I'd recommend it completely. It's a classic that still holds up today, both for those of us who played it over 15 years ago and want to relive the experience, and for those who have never touched the game that started this whole saga. It's clear why it had such an impact on the genre.

I never played the Silent Hill franchise growing up so I kind of missed out on the entire thing but a good friend of mine has always begged me to play through this series and for his birthday I told him I would so recently I revisited it and recorded it and suprisingly I fell in love with it! While yes, the game is old and has some jank and a pretty stiff learning curve to it.. Once you get a hang of it and how it wants you to play it, its a really dark and unique story and experience that I really loved and appreciated. As always the entire thing was recorded and put on my youtube for a more indepth take on my thoughts on the game but I went in very much NOT a fan or invested in these games at all and I came out very excited to experience the second game very soon!

Phenomenal audio design and Ito's monster designs look brilliant even considering the PS1 graphics, however the story somewhat lets it down. Feels like there's less actual story than SH2 or SH3. The boss fights aren't great either, but are held up by music and design.

Atmosphere = 10/10
Designs = 10/10
Actual plot = 5/10, limited and mediocre in the grand scheme of Silent Hill.

Still, nice to see where Silent Hill 3 comes from.

Very strong start to the series. Can’t believe I held off on it for so long. It is clunky and the gameplay, especially the movement, took some getting used to. I thought I would hate the camera like I usually do with old games but it was actually good, giving cool shots and a more cinematic, creepy feel. I’ve always wanted more horror out of the RE series and this scratched that itch perfectly. The story and atmosphere take the stage over the gameplay but I still enjoyed it a lot, especially compared to the old RE titles. Definitely moving 2 and 3 up the backlog.

PT-BR:

Infelizmente, por causa disso, não consegui o final Good+, apenas o Good.

O combate corpo a corpo é duro, travado.

EN:
As a horror game, Silent Hill is simply incredible. The soundtrack is largely to blame for the suffocating atmosphere; it not only complements it, but induces fear, leaving you constantly anxious and feeling a great deal of distress. If Resident Evil was already good at horror, Silent Hill takes it to the nth degree, especially psychologically.

Even though it was my first playthrough, it wasn't a completely "fresh" experience; I was already familiar with some elements of the story. From the second dungeon onward, where I started to suffer greatly with many enemies, limited ammunition, and a lack of healing, I ended up resorting to tips and, at the same time, I looked up the endings. Unfortunately, because of this, I didn't get the Good+ ending, only the Good one. I'll need to replay it soon to get the best possible ending.

Now, the negatives... The melee combat is tough and difficult. Until you get a better weapon later on, you'll be practically forced to rely on firearms and manage your limited resources well. Harry is quite... soft. And this is only made worse by the "tank" controls, which I personally detest. The camera shifts constantly, and this really bothered me, especially when facing those annoying flying enemies. I only discovered that you could adjust it with a button much later.

Ultimately, even with these flaws, the strengths outweigh them. Silent Hill is a classic that has aged, yes, but it still has a lot to offer, especially for those who enjoy psychological horror and dark narratives.

Silent Hill was one of the games that changed my life. The philosophy, the atmosphere, the soundtrack, its all pieced ever so graciously and is and will always be one of the most influential games I have ever gotten to play and put in my collection. It is slow and you need to take your time to solve puzzle and defeat enemies. You'll be very unsettled because the sound design is the homerun hitter for the way it makes you feel. A PERSONAL 10/10, wish I could play for the first time again.

This is an 9/10 out of self awareness that combat can be slow, movement is dated, and overall enjoyability will depend on player.

Silent Hill is not only a landmark in horror gaming, but an incredible achievement for the medium at large. The fact that this game was made by a small team with very limited resources and came out this good seems like a miracle, until you consider that Konami's low expectations allowed for vast creative freedom. The fantastic art direction, sound design, and soundtrack combine for a wholly immersive, unsettling experience, with the actual gameplay remaining simple and seamless.

The story has some flaws, but is overall a very interesting narrative, especially if you choose to explore the open areas and uncover the side content required for the Good+ ending. It was so satisfying to unravel the mystery and see it all culminate at the climax. Despite being nearly 30 years old, Silent Hill still holds up as a premiere horror gaming experience that no fan of the genre (or franchise) should skip over.

Good for its time. Now? Not so much, at least by my own standards. Yes, it set the groundwork for the Silent Hill universe and that is fantastic. However, the dialogue, some of the level design and the overall plot? Did not deliver the package for me.

It has great things going for it. Again, the skeleton of sh2, 3, 4. So in the end, it worked out, but it felt like Silent Hill couldn't realize its identity yet. The atmosphere is top-notch, then you are suddenly bombarded in every direction with artificial obstacles. Huge empty areas with 90% locked doors and holes in the floor. Finally, you find your destination and have to listen to super-slow, cheesy dialogue, with little substance. Some of the characters are also too ridiculously designed, making it hard to invest mental energy in them.

If you are going to emulate the game, try not to use upscalers. Play with the authentic resolution and extra shaders if needed. The atmosphere in Silent Hill is unlike any other. This is due to the artstyle/direction and unforgettable OST.

60/100, an outdated classic. Excited about the remake!

Pretty basic these days but I'd say it's one of the best PS1 games. Setting and level design was very nice. Plot was pretty decent for a horror game, I enjoyed the progression. The use of tension in the game was one of the best I've seen, and made the game scary even if it didn't have a huge number of actual scares.

Game is somewhat low poly because of the compute needed for the lighting system. The FPS still regularly drops, but it generally didn't bother me except in a few shooting situations. The enemies are not as scary as in the later games, and there is not a huge variety, but it's enough for the game to be enjoyable. Alternate endings and difficulties give the game decent replay value. Game was overall well designed except for one puzzle, and the final boss could have had a hint. The controls can be annoying but it's part of the overall design so it can't be helped.

The game contains mild censorship in the form of alternate enemies in the school.

My first Silent Hill exposure, so I wanted to start from the beginning. This game blew me away, I was shocked to see how well it holds up on the PS1, the cutscenes looks fantastic for its time and still looks great to this day, the music was phenomenal, the main theme and the song with Lisa are so impactful and beautiful.
The sound designs in the game are some of the best I’ve ever heard, the horrifying sounds during playing were so different to any other game I played, they built up the atmosphere very well and were genuinely terrifying.
I love the world and where it takes place, I find the base Silent Hill scarier than the nighmare world. There is no place that feels safe, everywhere in the world gives you a feeling of dread. I enjoyed the puzzles a lot, they were very fun to work out and were at a level where it wasn’t bullshit to work out and actually doable if you just find where you need to go and use the clues as reference to continue.
The characters were great, I particularly liked Lisa and Kauffman. Lisa’s story was tragic and Kauffman was a dick.
I managed to achieve the Good ending on Normal which was lucky, I had gotten to the amusement park and found out that I had completely missed the motel, so I loaded up a save outside the sewer and went to Annie’s bar to do Kauffmans side quest.
As for the enemies, there were some I preferred than the others, personally the worst enemies for me were the cockroaches, I couldn’t stand them, most of the time I’d run past them but occasionally that would end in my own demise as I get ganked by them, they were very annoying.
I also hated them stupid bird, if they wasn’t so hard to hit it would be fine, but I was so terrible at killing them I managed to learn how to completely avoid them.
I loved the nurses, they were very scary, not hard to kill but if you weren’t on your guard they would quickly kill you.
I also love the small fleshy guys (mumbles maybe? i don’t remember), they were so silly, not too hard to kill; however I shamefully admit I have died to them a number of times.
Personally, I wish the bosses were more…scary? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed fighting them and some of them (the stupid MOTH) were a challenge, but I felt they could’ve been more, demonic? disgusting maybe? I feel like after going through this demonic school with loads of monsters, I didn’t expect the boss to be a lizard of all things. This doesn’t change the fact that I enjoyed them and fighting SOME of them, just a little nit pick.
I LOVED the Cybil fight, when she would sit on the carousel horses and laugh making the merry-go-round spin, it was amazing, and the cutscene before it, that fight was built up so very well and it was challenging.
I like the story and I like mysterious it was,
when you go into the final boss and it turns out Alessa is Cheryl? I have my own theories about it and I like the fact that everyone can have their own interpretation of what is happening. The last boss was very hard, so hard in fact that I had to do the cheese way where you empty all your bullets and survive for a big and it automatically died. I tried it many times and despite how many bullets I put into it, it just wouldn’t die and that lightening killed me so damn fast. I loved the design of the last boss, that’s exactly for what I was hoping for with some of the other boss designs.
In the ending I got, I escape with a baby (without Cybil, I didn’t pick up the mysterious liquid sadly) and Lisa came from the grates and dragged Kauffman down with her. I only finished it a day ago so I’m still trying to piece together a story in my mind.
Overall, Silent Hill went above and beyond and I instantly fell in love with the game, I haven’t played many story driven survival horror games but I’m glad I started with this one, this is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played, I don’t know what it is, but it rubbed me in all the right ways. I can’t wait to play the second one as I am very very eager to now.

I remember first playing this when I was in high school. Which is really funny because I owned the game since I was like six back in 2002. But that was the year after my father had passed away and I was handed down his PlayStation 1 console and all the games he had with it. And of course Silent Hill was one of those games that i was too afraid to play. So I only stared at the disc label which had Cheryl Mason on it while just imagining what the game could be like. Eventually once I started high school when I would get home afterwards there was nothing for me to do if I didn't have any homework. So naturally I remembered owning the game disc, popped it in and started to play. After using a walkthrough because at that time I didn't know where to go in the game and about 10 hours or so later I finished it and got the good ending. But after some reading I had found out there was a better Good+ ending which I didn't end up going for until years later in 2022. And that's when on my second playthrough I only looked at part of the guide where it told me how to get the Good+ ending. In conclusion this was such an influential game in my life and changed everything about video games and reality for me.

It was kind of great in a meta sense. I appreciate that the developers showed that something like this could be done in video game format. The game itself plays like jank, and isn't terribly fun, but the atmosphere is there and the story is interesting enough. It is surprisingly less cliche than it seems when you really dig into it. I did not spend a lot of time with this game, but it was interesting to see how much Team Silent got right on the first try. They definitely were missing some ingredients to make it click though.

Silent Hill 1 is very old and crusty but it still holds up very well if you can get past the prehistoric graphics and clunky controls. I loved the recent SH2 remake and wanted more so I decided to replay the original.

The main thing that stood out to me is how awesome the pacing and level design are in SH1. This has significantly more overworld sections than all of the other old-school SH games. There’s really only 3 “dungeons” here and they only make up about 50% of the runtime (by contrast, SH3 is ~90% dungeons and SH2 is ~70% dungeon. The hospital alone is 4 hours long in the remake). I actually like how many rooms are inaccessible as it gets you through dungeons quicker.

The entire rest of the game is spent exploring the town. These sections have always been the best parts of SH games to me. The town itself is very cool and I love when it has you cutting through buildings and alleyways like RE3 (Which actually came out after SH1!). There’s a handful of optional buildings you can find and the last overworld area is basically a sidequest hub, which is awesome (tho tragically easy to miss!). The sewer sections are a chore but I love almost all of this game.

SH dungeons have never been as meticulously polished or detailed as Resident Evil’s so I think SH is at its best in these overworld sections. I think this, above all else, has made SH1 age like fine wine despite its obvious age. I REALLY hope Bloober team remakes this game and not 3 or 4. SH1's overworld-heavy nature would fit in perfectly with their new template and would make the game feel meaningfully distinct from the SH2 remake. They could beef up a lot of the pit-stops you make (Police Station, Mall, Church, etc), add sidequests, etc.

The story and atmosphere are excellent here as always. This is a more straightforward cult story than SH2 if you’re only familiar with 2. I love that it’s snowing throughout the game as well. Akira Yamaoka came out swinging with the music here, permanently marrying himself to the franchise. The mood is truly spectacular.

The final level here was just as intense as I remembered! It’s got the most puzzles in the game by far, it’s a disorienting nightmare that doesn’t make geometric sense, and the mood is truly haunting. This level was the most unsettled I’ve ever been by a game when I first played it 15 years ago and it’s still a trip!

Of course, I must mention this game’s age. This game has phenomenal art direction but the graphics are flat-out terrible by modern standards. This game was really pushing the PS1 and has not aged as well as the PS2 games or RE 1-3’s pre-rendered backgrounds. RE didn’t have the balls to go fully 3D until the Dreamcast and even then, went back to pre-rendered for REMake and REZero. The controls are clunky as well, even if you’re ok with tank controls. Combat is wonky in general, a few puzzles may send you to a guide, and some of the keys are a little harder to see than they should be...

So take that as a warning. I’m giving the game an 8.5 because most modern gamers aren’t going to be able to stomach this game but if you can get past these downsides, it is a 9/10 and one of the best horror games ever made. I genuinely think this is a better game than 3 or 4 in spite of the crustiness, and would put it over several RE classics as well.

The Silent Hill franchise is often considered the second great Survival Horror franchise starting on the PS1 after Resident Evil, and that's largely accurate despite the two games being very different. While Resident Evil is defined by its campy horror influence and survival mechanics, Silent Hill leans far more on the horror angle.

It is to Team Silent's immense credit that the first game still manages to elicit fear and admiration from someone playing it today.

There is no question that age, as a PS1 3D game, wasn't kind to Silent Hill. Yet, since the game was a competently made pioneering effort in many areas, it did things that stood the test of time and made it a rewarding experience even today. Simply a seminal work in the psychological horror sub-genre of Survival Horror games, it still is effective today despite its graphics and cutting-edge CGI scenes aging a bit.

When you hear that industrial sound groaning in the background and the darkness creeping in, you will be transported back for a moment to the time in 1999 when everyone was scared of these 3D polygons on their CRT TVs without an ounce of irony. At least until you remember how to point and shoot.

I know this is a controversial take, and many fans may disagree, but I found Silent Hill to be an outdated game—not just in terms of gameplay and graphics but as a design overall. For those considering revisiting or experiencing the original, I’d say proceed with tempered expectations.

There’s no denying that Silent Hill excels in creating a scary atmosphere, and the sound design is phenomenal—these aspects truly set the stage for survival horror as a genre. However, the core gameplay elements like level design, enemy encounters, boss fights, and puzzles felt underwhelming to me. These key features, which should elevate the experience, instead come across as dated and lack the depth and creativity found in later entries.

Back in its time, I understand why this game was groundbreaking, but playing it now, it feels more like a relic of the past. I didn't play it on the PS1 when it was released because I was too scared of horror games as a kid. Revisiting it now as an adult, I find it doesn't hold up well.

In my opinion, Silent Hill 2 significantly improves upon every aspect of this game, offering better storytelling, atmosphere, level design, and more engaging gameplay. If you’re looking to dive into the series, I’d recommend skipping Silent Hill and going straight to the masterpiece that is Silent Hill 2 (the original, not the remake).

While I respect the legacy of Silent Hill and acknowledge its influence on the genre, I don’t believe it’s essential to play in today’s gaming landscape.

still holds up today. of course the mechanics and graphics are dated as hell, but the atmosphere and tone they went for is still amazing.
