I like it as a relic of the past. I like it how it shamelessly tries to be the most edgy game possible, a wet-dream for teenage boys from 2000s. It's fun and hilarious, half the time seriously and the other half the time ironically. And I love how it looks, it aged better than many other games in that generation. The charm wears off eventually, but it ends when it starts to get repetitive. 5 hour playtime was a problem back in the day, but it's a blessing nowadays. It knows when to stop.
So... thumbs up. Not particularly great game, but it's still fun.

VERDICT:
How did I miss this gem of a game!? This was released in the year 2012 and I somehow missed this when I was playing console, was there something in that year that over shadowed this game? Assassins Creed III and Mass Effect 3 were the only two games that distracted me that year so Darkness II was probably missed due to that.
Anywho, I've played this game now and what a game it is! The asking price is a little steep for the year it's in but the game still runs well in our current year, also the campaign is short, just over the 6 hour mark to complete. The story is well written and the voice acting is fantastic! If only Darkness I was ported on the PC, I'll keep my eyes open for that!
Total Score = 91/100.

Absolute fantastic story. Not a novice to FPSs but I found this one very hard (though I beat the game in exactly the average time despite dying repeatedly - I reckon it'd have been more like 4-5 hours if I didn't, maybe I just have low standards of difficulty). If you don't use the Darkness effectively and buy skills wisely, you're left having to battle ammo scarcity. Having to run around with zero ammo was a fairly common experience though towards the end ammo seems to be in excess. Agree with another review that the bosses are not particularly hard - to be honest if you took out the ammo scarcity, made Jackie a bit harder to kill, and took out the whip enemies that took your gun, this would probably be on the easy side.I didn't really "get the hang" of how you were supposed to play the game until the final hours, so this would be a great one to replay on NG+.

Beat the game in 6 hours. Interesting story, combat was fun. The DOOM equivalent of "glory kills" took too long and slowed down the pace of the game. Once you finally get the good combat/ability upgrades the games ends so you have to do a NG+ run if you want to actually use them. The story was pretty good and kept me guessing if the main character was insane and just hallucinating everything or if it was actually happening to him. Predictable ending though but still enjoyable.

Really enjoyable FPS. I thought it felt a little clunky at first but once you get the hang of it, shooting and using the darkness' abilities becomes so enjoyable and fun. The story was quite short but still kept me engaged the entire way through and I thought the main set-pieces were really cool and entertaining. Wish the ending didn't end on the note it ended on but it is what it is. Also played through the whole vendetta campaign and the solo hit list missions, all of which were really fun even as a solo. I thought 3/4 of the new characters had really fun abilities and unique weapons and had a great time with the mini-story they were giving. The monologue interludes between levels were interesting, some were really good but others were quite forgettable. Overall, I had a genuinely great time with this game despite its age and short length, and I am now debating going through the story again to finish NG+ on the Don difficulty and get 100% achievements!Updated 1 Year Ago

This game is surprisingly good. Who knew that killing people with guns AND two demonic arms would be so fun! The writing, theories and conspiracies are clearly well done and could easily fool someone into thinking they are true. I was not expecting such a great story and feel for this game. Sadly, if you're Christian, this game attacks your faith like crazy. I'm sure the themes, violence and gore gave someone trauma. Could have given it a higher scoring if it wasn't for the traumaPROS:
- Great gun play mixed with supernatural powers
- Amazing story with a great ending (depending on which one you choose)
- Cool art style, making it look nice even though it's more than a decade old
CONS:
- The hardest difficulty is torture. I do not recommend playing Don on your first playthrough
- Evil, horrific and disgusting vibes throughout the game (for those who are not a fan like me)

*Warning: spoilers* Decent game, but not as good as the first one.
I enjoyed The Darkness II as a standalone game.
Its story follows the first game quite good, and many references are made throughout in the beginning of the game. I thought I was going to be in for a treat and at first, it looked that way.
But when continuing this new story, our new villain and his buddies (The Dark Brotherhood) appeared and they felt very disappointing. It is just so cliché, unnecessary and lame that it broke some of the fun I had with the game. A Dark Brotherhood, hunting you to claim the Darkness powers, I mean come on. I really missed the personal feeling from the first game in which you hunt a person who did you wrong or taking revenge on mobsters, that kind of stuff. Not some old boomer which you have never met in your life who controls magical powers and tries to steal it from you and who can only blag about taking over the world and other arcane cryptic bull crap. I hated it.
The combat mechanics have at least improved over the first game. The new kill moves, and the better use of your Darkness skills is a big plus from the stiffer combat in the first game. Hitting your enemies with the demon arm can now be done with the melee button, instead of selecting this skill from your darkness powers, like in the first game. Overall, the combat is more fluent and faster paced. The increased gore, in which you can slice your enemies in half is a nice bonus.
But a big downside is that the fight system feels like Modern Warfare: The Darkness II Edition. You cannot pass an area without murdering everyone.
Secondly, it has the "weak enemies", "stronger enemies", "strongest enemies", "mix of strongest enemies", "boss", mechanics. Gone is the open world from the first game in which you could go everywhere. Everything is blocked by invisible walls, until you killed all the bullet sponges and their mothers in the area.
It is a shame that they changed the graphics from the dark, realistic, and grim style to cell shading, which makes everything much lighter and less atmospheric. You can still shoot the lights but no matter how low your brightness is, the graphics will always make it feel brighter. You do not feel "dark" when you step in the shadows. Also, all the levels and environments are very bright and the sky alone lights everything in your path. Compare this to the first game, where it was always night, and you see what I mean.
The music is also a little disappointing. Gone are the brutal metal orchestra soundtracks from the first one and replaced with generic “spooky Scooby-Doo” tracks.
Although one cannot expect this game to be a continued clone of the first game, it has things I found less entertaining and I enjoyed it as a standalone game, like I mentioned, instead of a sequel.
It sure as hell is no worthy successor for The Darkness and hopefully, they learned from their mistakes if there is ever a The Darkness 3.

The first person shooter Venom / Prototype game we will ever get (never played the first game). You are a boss, literally a mafia boss but also feel like a video game boss. Not something they usually let you be in games, less at the same time.+ Comic-like art style with a nice dark atmosphere. Plenty of violence and gore.
+ Fun powers and executions.
- Few bugs. Invisible walls or unable to keep moving when you are supposed to. Enemies might get stuck.
- Vendetta's enemies are annoying (played solo).
Controls need a get used to (played with an Xbox controller) as you can shoot and melee at the same time.

In many ways I'd argue that The Darkness 2 is a lot better than its predecessor. For one thing it has a lot more of an absurdist sense of humor, but keeps things just as brutal as before. Its graphics are a lot more colorful and artistic than before, the game's energy level much higher, the music more atmospheric and epic, the dialogue much better written, and the controls are considerably tighter. I also never ran into a problem where my own minions killed me as I was about to complete a difficult battle. I also don't think I ever got stuck during a mission, unsure what to do, at least not for more than a minute or two. Because of that, I was able to continuously enjoy myself far more than the original. Yeah, it's not as "dark" but it's gothic nonetheless. I just wish that somebody would make a resolution for the game's quasi-cliffhanger ending.Updated 3 Years Ago

Needs a longer storyline for $33 I completed it in only 4 hours but if you're a completionist you'll get a lot more hours in it.I do recommend it though fun game gun play was nice only a few guns I wasn't a fan of but the shotguns felt great.
Bosses were way too easy though found myself having literally no difficulty on any boss fights in the game.

The epitome of "hidden gem", The Darkness II is an absolute treat. You'll get around 10 hours out of this if you play on the hardest difficulty, maybe more if you aren't used to shooters. The only real problems I had with the game are the quad wield controls. I remapped many of the controls for the tentacle attacks and switching guns. It can be extremely complex and likely you'll go through the game not using some of the attacks as it can be overwhelming to remember every key. Playing this game with an Xbox 360 controller makes the tentacle controls a LOT easier to manage. Each attack is perfectly mapped out on the joy pad, however, this obviously means you won't be using a mouse to aim, which in my opinion, is a deal breaker. In the end, I decided to just grin and bare the controls on keyboard, forcing myself to use each of the attacks occasionally, which got me killed plenty of times. There's a strong argument in the favor of this game being better on a joypad. Which is unusual for an FPS. Maybe there was a better way to map my keys and I just didn't find it. Perhaps you will have better luck.
In the end, it's a real shame the controls are so convoluted on keyboard and mouse. Custom mapping can help alleviate some of it, but it will never be perfect and it will always be awkward trying to remember which key to press for a certain attack. The directional slash with the tentacle is also a nightmare with the mouse as you have to be absolutely PERFECT with your directional movements of the mouse. If you don't slash in the direction PERFECTLY, you will miss, and the enemy will be on you like white on rice. The real shame of all this, is that this game is absolutely fantastic, an absolute BLAST to play through. Gratuitous violence, nudity, smooth combat, perfect length. Overall a great game with some control issues. 8/10
ABSOLUTELY PLAY THIS GAME.

As a person who played the original Darkness on PS3 I litteraly hated this game so much due to the lack of story and fun itself. Absolutely no side quests, old characters that has been barely used in the storyline, no interesting locations AT ALL (if you still memorize how awesome was a Hell with giant train in World War 1 atmosphere - then you gonna hate Darkness 2 twice more) and for some reason they made The Darkness powers and familiars... Suck. No black holes, no suicide demons, NOTHING. The only good thing is that maybe graphics are become much interesting, not that realistic and more "comic's like", the gane is short and there is no slow parts at all.
So if you never played the first part - go for it.

The first Darkness game never came out on PC and while some narrative is given about the story’s background, the first scene throws you into what feels like a confusing and uncharted territory. Here comes Jackie – a mobster, who is possessed by a demonic entity that haunted his family for generations – and this demon is trying to emerge back into existence after Jackie managed to keep it repressed for a while.Needless to say that some motivation is needed, and Jackie hallucinates that this demon – The Darkness, can help him unite with his murdered girlfriend Jenny. In the other corner stands The Brotherhood – who wants The Darkness for themselves, and an imaginary asylum to which Jackie digress as a possible alternate reality. If this sounds all confusing – it's because it is confusing, but the story is delivered well with impressive cut scenes and conversations that almost makes it logical in an obscure and cunning way.
With the demon, Jackie has quadruple weapons set up. Two conventional arms that can yield one or two weapons, and two demonic arms which can grab, slash and cut the enemies. Depending on how you kill the opposition, you get points that can be spent on buying new demonic abilities, moves and weapon upgrades. Those are available as a talent tree, where you can only buy one talent only after you purchased previous abilities lower down the tree.
A lot is going for this game. The graphic is good, the cut scenes and storytelling are composed with a professional gist, and the number of moves and combos are impressive. Difficulty levels are fair – I played in the "Mobster" difficulty level (2 out of 4) and died several times, but the challenge was agreeable and the save points close enough together for it not to get frustrating. Controls were also responsive and laid out reasonably.
On the flip side, this is a short, very linear game and the story punch-point was quite obvious before I reached the end. The asylum somehow did not tie well into the story and the many combo moves felt sometimes unnecessary (although it was suggested that in higher difficulty levels they are important to master). There are also rumours of graphic glitz where the graphic goes into haze (this happens every time The Darkness goes into a lit area) and fail to sharpen back up – although I personally never encountered this problem.
Overall it's a well-made game, but somehow none of its characters really stayed with me and captured your imagination, and none of them felt "real" enough to made me care. Maybe this was the reason that the game did not sell as well as 2K Games has predicted, and the planned 3rd game in the series never came to light. Overall, an enjoyable FPS worth picking up and playing even today.
