First time playing this game. I didn't liked it too much - a lot of buildings and missions is just copy-paste and parkour does not feel good, because your character jumping somewhere you didn't told him to, refuse to climb and just hug the wall, jump straight into the water instead of platform and so on and so on. May be it's this way because of hardware and software limitations of that time, but it does not make it feel better. In short - this game didn't age well

❝ The world is an illusion, and you can submit to it, which is what most people do, or fight it. Laws come from common sense, not from God, and therefore nothing is true and everything is permitted. ❞The first installment in a great series of games. While it still has some rough edges that could be improved in a sequel, this game has definitely found what makes them fun. The medieval atmosphere is great.

I would highly recommend NOT starting the Assassin's Creed franchise at the beginning. The game is fun and the story is good, but my GOODNESS it can be very infuriating at times. It's easy to forgive because it was cutting edge at the time, but the mechanics are incredibly dated now. The combat is actually fairly decent, but the amount of times you'll slip off buildings and fail to climb certain obstacles for no reason is quite annoying.
There are several other buggy/annoying mechanics I could mention, but it would just get repetitive so I'll just say this: play this game if you enjoy the franchise as an entity, but not for this game alone. It was fun to come back and visit this game in 2022 for the sake of playing the franchise's start, but Assassin's Creed has improved in so many ways since then.
Overall, a 6.5/10, would only recommend to fans of Assassin's Creed as a franchise.
TL:DR - play this game for the sake of playing the first Assassin's Creed game, or if you're just interested in the AC story, and for no other reason. The mechanics, graphics, and gameplay are all dated.

I really like the story of this one because it definitely sets the scene for the rest of the series. I also like Desmond for some reason, he's just A Guy that got pulled into this whole disaster and it feels relatable (despite the circumstances). But you can also tell that this is the very first game of the series because the controls are extremely frustrating and unpolished. I know you jump on random objects in pretty much every Assassin's Creed game but this one is the worst. It redeems itself with the story so I'd recommend playing through that, but don't attempt to 100% it. The collections are an absolute slog to try and get through. Even while having a map I got so lost as to which flags I had already gotten, and I had to go around the Kingdom at least twice because I missed one. Some of the achievements were rough as well. I had to restart my playthrough because I missed a single dialogue option with Lucy and missed an achievement.
Overall I enjoyed my time with this game and I may replay it in the future, but I definitely won't be going for 100% again anytime soon.

After replaying most of the AC games over the past few months returning to AC1 was an interesting experience. Some parts upon replaying it again I expected but other parts surprised me. The story, parkour system, music and atmosphere and brisk pacing of the game is what I found fascinating upon coming back to the game over a decade later. AC1 isn't a game I consider to be amazingly designed, it has just enough going on from a moment to moment gameplay standpoint with an engaging story that it was enjoyable. The story I have a soft spot for since it was my first introduction to stories with philosophical themes and questions. With that said, the only big issues with it is the begginning, ending and some of the plot twists. The first issue probably going to turn away many since it starts with Altair killing an innocent old man and disregarding a creed that he seemingly followed for a long time. What lead to the disillusion of it? What lead to Altair's arrogance? The game never answers this. However, if you can get past this, the story from here and out is full of intrigue and thought provoking moments.
The dialogue Altair has with his assassination targets and the Brotherhood he serves is the biggest highlight of the story. In how with each target Altair kills, he starts to question if he is doing the right thing. His targets speak of good and noble intentions where his allies and by extension master Al Muliam often reassures that what they say are lies and misdirection. Altair and by extension the player however are still not 100% sure. What also helps is that at the start of the story after the inciding incident, the Assassin Brotherhood treats him with scorn but he slowly earns their respect with each assassination in the various cities. Al Muliam would often test his conviction to the cause with cryptic riddles and questions. The best part is that all of these dialogue sequences are never overly long and to the point.
There are some questionable plot twists like why did Altair take so long to figure out the men he was sent to kill where connected due to them being Templars and was Al Muliam always evil or did he go through a heel turn? The lack of backstory can take the idea of Star Wars logic a little too far. The ending is also very anti climatic and doesn't provide much closure.
Atmosphere and music is also quite good. With the Jerusalem, Arce and Damascus ambient songs giving a lot of character. The gritty and grimy look of Arce is contrasted the more hopeful and upbeat Jerusalem both accompanying by music that work in tandem with each other to give an immpecable vibe.
The gameplay is interesting in that it has a mission system that is infamous for being "repetitive" but it is accompanied with at the time a novel climbing and free running system.
However the fulcrum of what makes AC1's gameplay solid is how it follows the idea of, "it's over before you know it". Every mission like pickpocketing, eavesdroping and interrogating are over in less than a minute. Climbing up the towers to find them is also quick. Side missions where you need to rescue civilians are also brisk. You climb, do a quick mission then climb some more. This free running system is intuitive enough it can be enjoyable and immersive climbing up such tall structures. It also helps that hidespots are on rooftops so when chased by guards, it's still encouraged to free run and use the roofs.
The act of the assassinations themselves can also be over and done with fast. In a game like Hitman, much of the gameplay in the levels are spent trying to get up close and then quietly killing your target. In AC1, most of the legwork of getting close to the target is done in the open world so the actual kill can be down through semi efficent infiltration or getting caught and quickly getting the kill before the target can draw his sword and it becomes an actual duel and by extension brawl. It ends in a chase accompanied by an amazing chase theme. Hidespots are plentiful and breaking line of sight is not difficult so it adds to the brevity of the game's challenge.
The assassinations towards the end of the game do a good job at throwing more geniune shakeups to the game.
It's not all amazing since one big issue with the game is the terrible AI especially the furthur you get into the game since guards become more aware of Altair's presence and more trigger happy. A massive strength the game has that there never any extended sections where you aren't allowed to be seen or it's a game over so the devs are aware of their enemy AI shortcomings.
Combat is decent and swift. It's not counter spamming or getting one kill means leads to insta kills. Enemies can do heavy attacks which can't be reliably be countered and partner that with weaker enemies encourages defense and offensive. One heavy attack can't kill you but multiple can level your life bar.
Overall, the brisk gameplay pace, the amazing animations, dialogue and music carries AC1.

The game that started it all...This game is a perfect laying of foundations for the series that follows.
Make no mistake, it does not hold up very well to today's standards (in terms of gameplay itself). It is repetitive as all hell, and there isn't much to be done beside the infamous Ubisoft "collectathon" and seemingly meaningless "side content." Stuff that involves assassinating guards, collecting flags, parkour challenges, etc.
The story, however, is effectively a masterpiece of world building. The alternate history angle when playing as Altair during the Third Crusade in the Mid-East is straight up captivating, and the sequences in the modern day are mysterious, brooding and get quite uncomfortable (in a good way.)
If you can get past the lack of meaningful content in between the main missions (filling up that memory sync bar gets very tedious at times), then you're in for a great time.
Overall, it is not hard to understand why this game was so influential at the time of its release.
If you haven't played this yet, or any of the Assassin's Creed franchise, pick this up on sale. The story is great, it's gameplay repetitive, but wraps itself up into what is rightfully considered a classic.

Annoying parkour system + THE MOST ANNOYING NPCS (constantly spotted directly or harass you) and repetitive quotes...Annoying camera lock after some quests (save citizens) + lock inside hiding spot while on run...
No loots, rewards from anything...
Also npcs that can track you from miles away on run...
Combat locking ennemies weirdly but counter attack are deadly atleast... and also good saving time with teleporters.
Still good game, ambiance + nostalgia from it being the first AC.
2008 release date on PC, still pretty good graphics but very repetitive game, few contents inside of it with a lot of restrictions or softlocks, bugs.

I grade this game so well only due to the story, which was wonderful. So wonderful, in fact, that I even read the book “Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade”. This said, there were also multiple issues with the game that made it rather challenging to play. Firstly, there was that bug of the game freezing every few minutes, which I forced my boyfriend to fix (something had to be changed in game files or something). Secondly, why the hell are there no subtitles? I feel like I missed at least 25% of dialogues due to this (good thing I read the book).
When one looks more at gameplay, many complain about wacky controls. Sure, they are wacky sometimes, but I had issues with it only a few times, so not compliant worthy. What IS complaint worthy is that stupid ass AI that the NPCs in the game use. I have NEVER raged as hard over a game as I raged over Assassin’s Creed one.
Firstly, there are those crazy people who push you away if you breathe next to them. God forbid if you have a pickpocketing mini mission or try to get a flag, and three of these bastards catch you in a loop, pushing you between each other like if you were a football. Beggars for money are less of an issue, but their voice just annoys me. And I also find it extremely unfair that the crazed men only push the MC. Like at least help me and push the enemies as well…
The vigilance (I think they are called that) are quite… useless? Would be nice if they grabbed someone, you could hidden-blade the enemy easily, but I guess it is too good to be true. Or would be even better if they did not body block the enemy, so you attack them instead…
Now to my “favourite” part - enemies. There are those mini-missions of having to rescue people from 4-5 guards. You kill the guards, even though they block every attack or combo you to oblivion not letting you attack, thinking life is good. Ah, not that easy, because I assume that enemies have a hive mind, causing more of them to run up to you from the radius of 5 km. You think it would be a quick fight with 4-5 guys? Yeah, prepare to fight off like 15 at the same time. “But Aggdy, you could flee and hide”. Yeah, I could. But sometimes defeating all 15 of them is much faster than trying to run away from them (as they obv shoot at you, stagger you, and don’t forget about crazy people pushing you around) and find a hide-out in which you could actually hide. And as you run, you collect even more enemies on your ass like pokemons, as apparently these bastards can follow you through half of the map. And sometimes they attack you for no reason? They have some Grand Theft Auto police logic of them getting angry at you for only bumping into them. And don’t get me started about their spider senses, when I was not even close to them but was attacked only because I locked onto them.
People say that flags are annoying to gather. I actually enjoyed collecting flags a lot, and would have enjoyed it even better if not being constantly attacked and pushed around when trying to get to a flag. It is also funny how some complain about how “repetitive Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey” is, but man, in comparison to Assassin’s Creed one, Odyssey has no repetitions. Sure, you need to clear out outposts and stuff, but at least it is not a few mini missions repeating all the time as in Assassin’s Creed one, it being a big part of the game. No variety besides killing the main targets whatsoever.

It's a really valuable game for me, while everyone was hating on this game for some reason I played it with bated breath and finished it and really enjoyed it, okay I'm aware that there was a mistake in the mission design but as I said I loved it very much at the time for some reason. Gameplay: 3/10-Gameplay is very bare bones and repetitive. Once you've killed your first target, you've basically seen it all
- Every map is littered with flags to collect, which are pointless collectibles that give no reward or whatsoever. Their only utility is making the game pointlessly longer and convince you to buy the official Prima Guide if you played back in the day.
Story: 9/10
-The game has an amazing plot, which is full of intrigue and very interesting
-A solid foundation is set for the following games and the mysteries within this one make you courious to check them out
-There's nothing extremely emotional, just some good old conspiration
-I liked how they portrayed King Richard and Altair's character development
Atmosphere: 7/10
-Cities are a bit barren: they are full of people who have nothing to say or do though
-Landscapes are still good, I also love the style of the architecture
-The soundtrack isn't particularly memorable, but it's still good.
Conclusion: 6/10
-Amazing story, boring game. Glad they fixed the gameplay issue a bit on the following entries though

Dziś to bardziej relikt swoich czasów niż wciąż grywalny klasyk.

You can tell the first installment of Assassin's Creed is the backbone of the amazing series. What a joy it was to play. Its advanced mechanics are basic and simple and really highlight how AC started out and what they've improved on over the years. The atmosphere and setting of this game are incredible. It takes place during the Third Crusade in the Holy Land, and Ubisoft nailed it with being able to historically replicate it. My passion for history really makes this game 2x better, giving a great insight into the world during this time period, even though it may not be 100% accurate. I had a blast jumping from rooftop to rooftop in Masyaf, Jerusalem, etc. The parkour is incredible, even for today's standards. The characters are amazing; I loved Al Mualim and especially loved Altair. They crafted him perfectly—cold, ruthless, and mysterious. He's such a badass character and one of my favorite video game characters of all time. I absolutely LOVED the lore. Although the repetitiveness holds back the game, and I didn't really like being interrupted occasionally to travel back to the modern period, but overall I didn't mind it too much. Wish it was longer. The atmosphere, lore, parkour, and historical setting are all things that make me love this game. A 8/10 for me.Updated 5 Months Ago

Story – 8.5/10 - Altair's story is pretty straight forward but offers some nice points of reflection and some great twist. The present story introduces us to the Miles story-line, which in this first stage is barely touched but is still capable of offering very interesting momentCharacters – 8.5/10 - The cast has few central characters. Both them and their interaction evolve in a satisfying way. The villains bring out the doubt of the MC, and his struggle is well portrayed in the dialogues.
The present cast is bare bone, but still offers somewhat deep characters with interesting dialogues.
Pacing – 9/10 -
Setting – 8.5/10 - I really liked the setting as it made me feel immersed both in the place and the time. The present day setting although is seems boring hides a really rich lore that is just barely touched and is left for the later games.
Mechanics – 8.5/10 - The mechanics are soo soo good. They feel intuitive and is easy to convey what you want to the characters albeit some hiccups are present. But overall the combat, parkour and stealth are excellent. The "open world" section fells pretty lackluster though
Missions – 7/10 - The main missions are set in pretty interesting and varied situations. Unfortunately the side missions aren't really varied and feel pretty repetitive
Controls – 8/10 - Simple and straight forward controls that feels immediate even if it sometimes leaves something to be desired
Graphics – 8/10 - The graphics seems pretty good for the time, but playing now deliver an almost "vintage" feel that together with the setting really benefits the game
Music – 7.5/10 - Nice music that fits well with the setting
Overall Thoughts – 8.2/10 -

I am sad to say that I abandoned this game. I will come back to it, eventually, but for now, I sunk over 20 hours into it and still had to walk away with such a bad feeling in my mouth, it's not even funny.I began playing Assassin's Creed, the first of the series, with the intention of 100% it and playing through the series in order. And while I understand that this game is old, that it was the first to experiment with what would become this series' mechanics, wow does it have some atrocious design.
I will mainly base my thoughts on the collectibles, which are awful, just plain awful. Talk about the blandest collecta-thon in history. I read somewhere that this was done intentionally as a means of critiquing other games that were like this, but... what is the point of just doing the same thing?
Story is cool I guess. I was trying to pay attention, but it wasn't grabbing me too much. Couple that with really repetitive gameplay that doesn't offer me the tools to make it more interesting myself and... yeah, I'm surprised I sank as many hours as I did on it.
Suffice to say, I'll be back, but only to complete the story. Ubisoft can shove all their fucking flags up their ass.

Reviewing this for its time. It was great, it was a game for its time especially with parkour being at its golden age. It introduced so much in terms originality and spawned a culturally significant game. Plenty of detail, architecturally and in its traversal. Its combat was great, responsive enough and the tools it gave you to defeat or dupe enemies were great. It brought a lot to the table, especially with the narrative. It's important that this review takes into what it was at the time, as games such as this don't seem to age as good as it should as more releases in its franchise dilutes itself.Updated 6 Months Ago
