Trepang² nails the gunplay—fast, brutal, and super satisfying, like Doom’s chaos mixed with F.E.A.R.. But everything outside the action falls flat: stealth is clunky, the story is a cliché, and missions repeat the same formula until it gets dull. Great for mindless shooting, but nowhere near the depth or atmosphere of F.E.A.R..

Playing this game felt like when I used to play and replay the Black Ops 3 campaign when I was a teenager (except this game is probably much better than that). Solid game play mechanics with fun missions relating to different monsters and anomalies. It started getting a bit repetitive near the end, but all the crazy stuff the game does kept me hooked.

Solid game, tons of fun. Didn't get very repetitive - it usually had lots of fun places to shoot enemies in and introduced enough new guns to keep it at least mostly interesting.

Weird game. Kind of fun gunplay. However, no character progression at all. Your skills don't change the whole game, you don't get any new weapons. You get some new weapon attachments but I found them to be mostly worthless. Decent challenge on the Normal difficulty in some cases. Final boss fight is pretty annoying.

Most of the game is just hordes of guys that can tank shotguns to the face. You can slide around like crazy, but the enemies would ragdoll all over the place and it would be hard to track them.

Stylish, fast, and fun up to a point. Eventually the base ideas of slow-down time and "super soldier" gameplay fade a bit and you end up feeling rather limited as stamina (and thus sprinting, as your base walking speed is s-l-o-w) depletes rapidly and makes escape difficult on harder levels.

I think the first thing everyone will compare this to is FEAR, and it's obvious why - the gameplay and horror themes are super similar. However, this is what makes the game fantastic! It's like a fresh coat of paint has been applied to an already very unique formula and it really shines for that.

Trepang2 is a game that takes heavily inspiration from one my favorite shooters, FEAR. I think it does a solid job, even standing out from its own. Absolute kick-ass somewhat fast-paced fun, which is how I like my shooters nowadays as I notice the more, I play them. I played this game on hard mode, as usually do with these kinds of games, and I'd say the overall challenge made it worth it.

To start things off, the gunplay and combat is what I love the most. Like FEAR, there is nothing more satisfying than slowing down time, and blasting your way through enemies. The weapons all feel great to use, especially with the ability to duel wield, and the sound design is well done that adds some punch to the shots. The shotgun and sniper are an absolute blast to use, especially when you can watch enemy heads blow up for satisfying kills. The inclusion of attachments that add some variety, suppressors if you want to attempt some stealth, or a smart-gun for mini-gun.

It doesn't stop from there. The game includes interaction against enemies, which adds some neat depth to the combat. You can hold enemy's hostage and use as a shield, in which you pull their grenade pin and toss them to nearby enemies and watch them explode. Theres also an ability to cloak for some stealth opportunities and as a way to escape if gunfire is too much.

The enemy variety is solid, as your usual enemies will be Horizon soldiers. You got your usual fodders that can be killed easily, but then you have ones with shields that require you to maneuver around them, jump atop from them, or slide underneath them and watch them fly for you to shoot like ducks, another addition that I love for some satisfying kills - even better when slowed down. You also have armored enemies, which are slightly tougher to kill, and pushes you to play carefully and not mindlessly run around and shoot or else you'll die easily, as with the flame troopers, where you have to try and blow up their tanks on the back.

What I love about this, and FEAR is the mixture of tactical warfare with supernatural. It's not just soldier enemies your facing, but zombies as well. Although, while the variety is welcoming, I do find it to be a pain in the ass, similar to the suicide Cultists enemies for how they run up in groups overwhelming you, sometimes catching you off guard when focusing on other enemies. The mission where you had to destroy the reactors as zombies swarm you is an example of this.

The side-missions were decent, with most of them being hacking and defending. Missions like the Unidentified Structure was cool to play for the creepy supernatural stuff and then shifting back to intense combat. Adding onto the supernatural stuff, I did like the one mission where your somehow sent into the backrooms. It feels out-of-place, sure, which was probably some reference, but I did like how it fit with the eeriness of the game.

The bosses aren't anything special, although the final one against 107 was nice considering that challenges presented like how he can turn invisible, and how you have to dodge his slash attacks and timing it right just by the flash he gives. Additionally, your arm is cutoff, so reloading is slow, and recoil is high, which is a nice touch.

The level design is solid enough and how it complements the AI and the player, where you can navigate around for flanking positions, and shooting out lights if you want to go for some stealth. Plenty of areas are wide enough too for you to run around and shoot and launch surprise attacks. Although, my only complaint is how it doesn't have something like FEAR where one enemy may try to hide and surprise as you walk thinking it's safe. I always did love that feeling of trying to be careful and tactical.

The story isn't much, but I do like the twist regarding what you are, and how the organization you work for never intended you to keep alive and were just using you, even hinted from the bosses you fight.

The music sounds great and makes combat all the more fun. Hell, even the pause music when you bring up the menu to read documents is so pumping to listen to that I just stay there to listen.

Overall, a fine shooter that I like just as much as FEAR. Although I have yet to play the DLC's for FEAR, to get a refreshment. That said, definitely give this game a try.

Trepang2 is an amazing fast paced FPS filled with guns and gore. The main selling point of the game is the gameplay which is fluid and satisfying. You play as John Trepang, a mutant supersoldier who can kick, punch, slide and shoot simultaneously with the single purpose of revenge on the Horizon megacorporation which surpassed bill gates and has the best selling OS in the world (they also commit crimes against humanity for science, just like corporations do in real life).

Spoilers: The story is fucking batshit insane, including the likes of alien spaceships, mad cultists, supernatural creatures, zombies, the backrooms (!!!) and lets not forget the fucking illuminati. YES I'm not shitting you, play the game.

The sound effects are really immersive, the dialogue is realistic. The only downside of the game is that half of the side missions are boring, wave based combat arenas. I would really like more crazy shit that blows your mind in the next installment of the franchise. Perhaps space combat or fighting lovecraftian entities or something.

The game can be considered indie, so it is my duty to be generous in the review. I give an 9/10 (Amazing)

It does not play or look nearly as good as the trailers make you think. Movements feel floaty, and gameplay has very little variety after the first level. Horror elements only appear in one or two levels (depending on what you consider horror) and feel tacky.

The game may be more appealing to people who loved FEAR way back when and have been looking for something to scratch the itch even since but it would have been nice if the devs had taken game design lessons from recent years rather than just copying everything from the early 2010s.

Trepang2 is an absolute blast of a zoomer shooter! The overwhelmingly positive notion of steam is always a good indicator that a game will be kick ass and emphasis on the kick with this specific game. It was 7-8 hours of nothing but high octane combat mixed with hair standing on end horror and spook. A great game that anyone with $10-20$ should pick up for a solid amount of joy and adventure.

Let's start out with the good. One thing I like to bring up with games is what I call the Goku Effect. It means that the longer I play the more I feel like a god. This game does that incredibly well. The fact that in some of the final missions I was tossing grenades, grappling enemies, throwing them into their friends and then dropping them all while doing it in around two seconds of movement and flow makes you feel like an absolute badass and I got to give a point for that.

The game play flow state you can find yourself in, reminds me of playing the new Dooms. There were moments of stillness instead of it being a moment to breathe is a moment of horror and spooky from the different anomalies. I absolutely loved the push and pull of the two genres of zoomer shooter and survival horror because it made me think about what do I need to do to survive this specific situation and once I survive how do I tackle the puzzle that is the new room full of enemies.

I also want to take a moment to compliment the individuals that worked on the audio design and sound track. Holding strong to the classic zoomer fashion of loud rock metal when murdering enemies but I do want to compliment the individuals that worked on the anomalies and how they sound. From the flesh of a meat monster to the horrific silence switching in and out of the game for the more technological beings. Whoever worked on that system deserves a medal.

I want to give one more point for replayability. Yes there is a campaign which is where my time was spent but a combat simulator, multiple cheats and scales to play around with, and of course a hit list of bad guys you can go after there is so much to do in this game which I thoroughly appreciate. I truly think it is worth the money of $10-20$ if you are only going to play the campaign but if you are looking for a fun game to sink some teeth into then you can definitely get some value out of this one.

A point for sound design, a point for the Goku Effect, a point for replayability and a point for the flow state you can get into. I give Trepang2 an incredibly respectable 9/10.

The same as I said on Steam:

It's a decent shooter that may be cool for a lot of people.
Sadly, just not for me...

... the level-design get quite annoying (labyrinth after labyrinth), the enemies keep running away, bosses just keep spawning mobs and it does overall overstate its welcome a bit too much.

The shooting is fun for a while, though.

kudos for it being work of 4 people, extremely impressive stuff
but its got a ridiculous identity crisis which isn't easily obscured
i still wholeheartedly recommend it for the gunplay alone and still will (at no more than 15 bucks)
though i personally didn't get my money's worth since what i value in some shooters is not what others value (sometimes)

Trepang2 is a zoomer shooter that is incredibly fast paced with a wide variety of levels taking on Horizon.

Pros: The gameplay itself is very fun. I played between Normal and Hard and both felt challenging enough to not get bored while playing. The different levels are surprisingly varied and kept things fresh throughout the campaign and side missions. With different camos to unlock and difficulties to punish you, there is a lot of replay ability.

Cons: While the maps and settings can vary between levels, the actual gameplay does not. Drop into a location, kill everything that moves, repeat. Can get stale and I only found myself playing in short bursts. The story isn't the main reason you play the game but it is worth mentioning that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. And with no one but yourself walking around the base it can feel pretty empty.

The Meh: graphics looked good but not great. The music went between so annoying I had to turn it off, and heart pumping that added to the thrill of the game.

For a small team this was very well done. I'm not very into the zoomer shooter genre but had a good time playing. Not something I will play often but will come back to if I want some mindless fun.

"The spiritual successor to F.E.A.R.". Well, they got it mostly right. Debris flying around, lots of particle effects, slo-mo, melee, an attempt at horror, that all works well. It's just not as fun as I remember FEAR being. The later levels really start to spam enemies at you, and they're harder to make out in the chaos because the game is super dark, even for a horror game, and the enemies are all wearing black. So the result is you'll often find yourself under attack from all angles are aren't clear where to aim, and end up using your super powers to run away rather than stay on the offensive. The story is...functional. Clearly just a vehicle to get you moving and shooting. I was a little let down but it was still pretty fun.

I absolutely loved Trepang2. The game is visually stunning and incredibly fun. The immersive sound effects pull you right into the action, and the soundtrack fits perfectly with the game's intense pace. Trepang2 brings back the feel of "classic" FPS games from the 2000s—a straightforward, action-packed shooter that doesn't get bogged down with endless cutscenes every five minutes. It provides just enough story to give depth to the plot and develop the scenario.

The game has a dark atmosphere similar to F.E.A.R. but without the horror aspect. It also reminds me of Soldier of Fortune. While the game is short, it's definitely worth it! I recommend playing it on Hard difficulty; anything less might be too easy and not as engaging. I didn't encounter many challenges until the last two levels, where I had to retry several times.

I just wish there were a greater variety of weapons and more extensive customization options. In the end, the only modification I made to the weapons was changing their skins. I completed the game in 5 hours and 50 minutes (without the side missions) on Hard difficulty. Despite its brevity, Trepang2 offers a thrilling experience that's well worth your time.

After hearing news about a spiritual successor to F.E.A.R., one of my favorite games of all time, I just had to give Trepang² a try.
...And I really like it!

It feels like a combination of the corridor shooter that F.E.A.R. is, with the more over-the-top action of the modern Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, so I'd say that the game has its own identity instead of being just a F.E.A.R. inspired shooter; it has its own identity and it's doing its own thing. But all the comparisons with the 00s shooter are fair, since Trepang² has some of the members that worked on the F.E.A.R. games. In any case, I'd recommend for fans of both games.

I played all missions on Hard just like I do with most of shooters. Now that I finished it, I think that I should've tried the Very Hard settings, but I think I still got a quite good amount of challenge.

The game also has plenty of secondary stuff to do, such as side-missions (that are like arenas where you'll find yourself fighting waves of enemies), grabbing briefcases to enhance your weaponry, and lots of intel to collect and learn more about the game's universe.

I think that my my complaints are minimal: the game is sometimes just too over-the-top. I punched a couple of enemies in the face only to see their head explode, or kick their lag to see they screaming. It cracked me up at first, but I think that since I'm mostly fighting human enemies, I'd expect to break a bone, or make their heads turn, The voice action is also kinda cheesy sometimes, and the story
is somewhat messy, and not grounded like in the F.E.A.R. games. But again, it's an over-the-top shooter, and it's trying to do its thing instead of being just a sucessor of that game, am I right? So yeah, these minor aspects aren't that relevant.

Definitely a game developed with tons of love, and that makes sense since it's an indie game. I'd like to see bigger companies doing things like these guys did, because Trepang² is really that good.

In my scale of enjoyment, it's highly recommended: 8.5 out of 10

It's not trying to be the most amazing story or have the most revolutionary gameplay. It's simply utter carnage and very slick moment-to-moment gameplay with some awesome shootouts. It is very over the top, and it knows it. You will sometimes be unable to see from the amount of blood and gore from the absolute devastation that the game gives you and wants you to unleash. Through the range of difficulty options it has a good level of "easy to learn, hard to master" to it. There aren't any over complicated systems to learn here, just you, your guns, and your skill in using them.

I would agree with people saying it is a sort of spiritual successor to FEAR. Mainly has the good shootouts from FEAR 1 and turns it up a few notches. Has some of the supernatural spookiness as well, though the focus is most definitely on the over-the-top action.

If you like a fast paced shooter that is "easy to learn, hard to master" give it a go. One of the more fun shooters I've played in a hot minute.

This is an interesting concept but not refined enough to be a full fledged game.

A couple things could realy help this title move forward in another version of the game or the next one.

* Remove stealth, it isn't very useful outside of using it to hide when the bullet time runs out.
* Enhance bullet time to start replenishing on it's own or at least on damage of an enemy instead of on death.
* Add ability to upgrade abilities / health

Fun early on, later it becomes armor everywhere and bullet time is the best way to handle it, if you can get into the flow of using bullet time + stealth well you can really destroy. However, some of the later levels are so much armor, including their body, that it becomes a chore to kill anyone and it feels like the stealth is almost always empty.

I had some fun early on, and some challenging fun in last area ish but the final boss is a joke in difficulty ramp up. It doesn't give you much option to replenish the bullet time, and while it can help on the boss it's just a dodge fest. You'll get it, but it's kind of hollow since you don't really get to do what you've been doing up to this point, bullet time + stealthing.

Trepang2 tries to do a AAA shooter on a single A budget, and somehow manages to pull it off, mostly.

The story is a garbled mess, I only vaguely got a sense of what was going on at the very end, and I read every intel collectible I found. I did want to learn more about the world and its backstory, so hopefully a sequel can flesh the lore out a bit more.

The atmosphere, however, was absolutely perfect. Not a lot of games pull off this aesthetic or setting very well. You can tell it's heavily inspired by SCP and creepypasta stories, but there's a lot of creativity. I personally adore more action-heavy horror with sci fi elements, so this was perfect for me.

The gameplay is excellent. It's a solid bullet-time, dual-shotgun-wielding, glory-killing boomer shooter, but with many horror-focused levels to spice things up. It does genuinely get scary at times.

My biggest complaints are nitpicks, but big ones. The game has many scenes where your NPC allies are supposed to heroically storm enemy compounds, but it's obvious that each NPC is just spawned in and then told to autopath to a specific point. The synced up and stiff walk cycles make it apparent that the cutscenes use a lot of canned animations. Also, sometimes it can be a bit too hard, but I did play on Hard/Very Hard so what the hell am I complaining for.

I know this review seemed negative, but that's because there's huge potential here and I sincerely hope they make a sequel with a bigger budget. This is worth playing for sure.

Loved the game even on RAGE MODE. Good story, incredible soundtrack, very good graphics for the small team and 10/10 gameplay, which is what matters the most at the end of the day.

I recommend you to play on other difficulties first unless you're a real try-hard and don't want to be devoid of the ultimate challenge, as it really gets much more easier and there's a lot of tricks to make the RAGE MODE achievements much more easier.

I just felt like I was killed too few times in Extreme and found it too easy, and wanted the challenge from the get go. I felt like if I had tried rage mode at the end the game would have just been a power fantasy and I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.

The story is borderline unintelligible, but it's an incredible playing experience, more amazing that only four people were on the core team. If you like F.E.A.R., don't even hesitate, get this! But maybe play on hard for a more than 4-5 hour experience.
