I love a good story over most other things in games. And Don't Nod games always tend to have a good story. I loved Vampyr but this game after playing for a while ends up rather generic and linear. You don't get to make deep or difficult choices. You make an oath to help Antea ascend or resurrect her. I decided it is wrong, to try and resurrect Antea. The right thing to me is to let her go and eventually ascend no matter how much it would hurt for Red. In death you have to grieve and be strong and let go. Like Antea said life to the living, death to the dead. It is so very wrong to blame and sacrifice the living regardless of what wrongs they did to resurrect Antea.

So with every haunting case you just have 3 choices of blame which kills the person and takes their life so you can eventually resurrect her or ascend a ghost peacefully or banish them. I feel killing them no matter how horrid they are is not right to be an executioner.

I just chose to ascend most of them. The writing at first seems good but
the further I progressed I felt annoyed with the writing. They seem to try to think that to portray women as being strong and independant they have to be nasty, arrogant and toxic.

However the combat and enemy types are lacking and need improvement.
The world is a bit dull with too much backtracking and annoying climbing.
The successful ascent ending was heartfelt and done well. I enjoyed playing the game but would not want to play it more than once so just watched all the other endings on Youtube.

I'd rate it 7/10 as the game could be better.

Here's my very best advice: hold off on concluding any of the ghost quests at all until late-game when all of them are available so you know how many total you are working with, and you have investigated all of them up to the conclusion phase. That way you can actually take the measure of how many of the people you're judging deserve a good fate versus a bad one, and how each is going to weigh against the majority percentage of the total you need to get your desired ending. The game is transparent about there being two goals available and what you must do to get each, but not about how many times you must do that thing and it drove me nuts that they held the numbers ransom, because you weren't sure if you had wiggle room at all or you had to deliver only this one outcome consistently. So, truly: if you play this, make the three choices that are in the main plotline according to what you really think has been earned, not according to which ending you have committed to, because you can offset them with other cases later; you need majority of total available. If you overcommit to doing what's needed for either Ascension or Resurrection, you commit to often hating what you've done and just gritting your teeth -- and this is just overtly crappy game design, frankly. They sadistically make overcommitting feel mandatory when it's not, robbing individual choices of their impact because you can't tell if you're allowed to make them or not.

Spoilers start here. The thrust of the game is this big moral choice they want you to make: Resurrection or Ascension. But in true Dont Nod fashion, the writers go in determined to make sure either route sucks for the player. They are so insistent clear answers don't exist that they will try desperately to pry your fingers off your certainty that you know your own answer, like a child trying to get something they think they are owed.

The core plot arc is, and I don't say this lightly, poorly written; a considerable percentage of what the characters say to try to get you to feel bad about your choices doesn't even make any sense. For this plot to be compelling, they should have had Red die and Antea live. She is the prideful banisher and he is the apprentice so she's responsible for his well-being far more than the inverse; it would be a greater failure for her to have let him die on her watch, but she is also the one who is adamant that all ghosts must be banished -- so if she had essentially failed the man she loves by letting him die, but would be violating her own strong beliefs as a banisher to bring him back, then the core conflict you have to engage with in the living character would be clearer. With Red, the conflict seems manufactured; he has no such strongly held positions, so the struggle they have him go through where he feels bad about what he's doing no matter which he does makes no sense given he was a soldier for hire for many years -- how are we being so delicate with this man's conscience like it's not already kintsugi? Meanwhile, ghost-Antea insisting she wants to come back feels strange because ... she shouldn't want that as a banisher; they portray her with such strong feelings on this regarding anyone but herself it seems like she should be pushing Red to make the Ascension choice and he should be the one steering the choice if you go with Resurrection. It's like the writers didn't decide who their own characters were until after all the dialogue had already been written ... or else they were so strongly pro-Ascension they just couldn't figure out how to get these two characters' dialogue to lead to Resurrection so they made the characters say primarily uncharacteristic things for these chats.

I truly do think they were trying to set it up so you couldn't enjoy the game no matter which choice you make, and you make the choice very early so they spend the whole game denying you any feeling of success or reward for progressing toward the goal, let alone attaining it. Some things were fun about the setting and the idea of the game, and a lot of heart went into to teeing up the quest characters' conflicts which I normally would appreciate; I really thought I was going to enjoy being a ghost banisher! and navigating tragic love in haunted colonial New England! But they killed the fun off nigh immediately, so never mind.

Gameplay and combat were okay. Not ... in any way memorably good. Honestly there's just not much to say here; it's a narrative game dressed up as action-adventure.

I got 72% of trophies so can't call it a "completionist" run, but getting that many probably tacked ... 15-20 hours onto the game. I was, at the time, taking my trophy completion rate very seriously so I felt like I had to ... would not say the game compelled me to keep playing.

The combination of Witcher-style storytelling, with little to no moral guidelines for player choice, paired with AAA action-inspired combat like God of War, sounds like a slam dunk. These are games that defined a genre and were often imitated, but this is the first time I have seen a dev try to merge both. And they came really close to greatness, but there are some real issues holding it back for me. I would not say I hated my almost 40 hours with my two new favorite Banishers, but it did not give me the same visceral reaction I had with Witcher or God of War.

Slight spoilers ahead, mostly from the opening hours. The narrative sets up the overall plot pretty quickly, so if you want to go in blind, skip the rest and just know this is a game you might or might not click with depending on what matters most to you.

Combat

Honestly, it is bland, and it should not be. Switching between the two Banishers, each with their own health system (one HP, one Spirit), is a cool idea and leaves room for combos. You can execute a series of attacks, swap, and land a bonus strike. It is clean, efficient, and looks good, but ultimately feels unnecessary. Ninety-nine percent of encounters can be handled without these combos, since the extra damage is not worth tanking a hit just to trigger the third strike.

Your spirit partner gets cooldown-based spells, which become so strong they basically define combat. So the loop ends up being: punch stuff until the cooldowns are ready, then unleash the spells, repeat. Visually the combat has flair, but the connection between player input and satisfaction just is not there. Do most people eventually get tired of Kratos doing cinematic finishers? Probably, but it is still satisfying. This does not hit the same way.

The RPG elements are light. Props to the devs for making respecs easy, you can swap points in and out at will. There are a few different skill trees, each with branching paths where you pick one skill or another. The problem is not all skills are worth getting, and some choices do not feel meaningful. It does not lead to smart builds, just "grab the stuff that works." Gear and itemization follow the same trend. You pick flowers, loot monsters, upgrade equipment. There are about 90 pieces of gear, maybe 20 worth keeping. Unless you love the game enough to replay it, you will probably find one build you like and stick with it, so new gear stops being exciting pretty fast.

Enemy variety is rough. You fight ghosts, corpses, miners, wolves, and a couple bosses that eventually get recycled into regular enemies. That is about it. Maybe four or five core enemy types with reskins. You will get tired of them really quick.

Narrative

Banishers opens with a really strong hook, but it falls off. I will not spoil too much, but here is where it lost me: every haunting case gives you a choice, but that choice is already locked in by the oath you make with your partner early in the game. The game tells you it is important and will shape how you handle cases, but also says you are free to do as you wish. It is circular logic that does not work. To make things worse, the game straight up tells you which ending your choices are contributing to and even warns you to "pick this option as often as possible" if you want that ending.

The Witcher 3 nailed this because its quests tied morally gray choices to equally gray consequences. You were not playing a good or evil run, you were making decisions that mattered in the moment. Here, half the time I picked an option for the sake of my desired ending, not because it felt right. More than once I caught myself thinking "why did I just do that?" or "why did the game make me do that?"

This is supposed to be player-driven entertainment, and I get that they tried to give freedom, but the execution feels disingenuous. Even midway through when the game asks if you want to confirm your oath, I had no idea if that erased past choices or not. My guess is no, which again makes it feel pointless.

Other stuff

The game runs on Unreal Engine 5. Performance varies depending on your setup. It was playable on Steam Deck, but not great. Music exists, but I cannot recall a single track. There is a lot to do, hidden treasure chests, wave-based monster portals, 15 or so haunting cases, but the drive is not there. You are not hunting for new exciting gear, you are just farming upgrade mats to keep buffing the sword you nearly started with.

Your mileage is going to vary a lot. I am glad I got it in a Humble Bundle and did not pay full price. By the time the flaws became clear, I would have been well past the 2-hour Steam refund window.

This is a good but not great game. The story had a lot of twists and the overarching story was very good and fun to play through. The combat was good but it got pretty repetitive mid way through and it unfortunately falls in the rpg game category of “fetch quest after fetch after fetch quest”. But they do help the main story progress as well, so it’s a bit of a catch 22. But I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing the game, LOVED how the choices you make matter especially with the ending. The multiple endings in this game are very good imo, well worth a YT video watch to see them all I’d say for me… it was a solid 8/10. Good game but lacked a bit of umph in the combat. For $25 and under, I’d say give it a go and you’ll be fine, anything over, save your $

Just finished Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden and I need to share this incredible experience. As someone who's been gaming for years, I can confidently say this game has one of the best narratives of recent releases. The story of Red and Antea is simply masterful - an emotional journey that blends love, loss, and extremely complex moral decisions.

Side Quests That Actually Matter

What impressed me most were the side quests. Finally, a game that completely breaks away from the tedious pattern of "go there and kill X enemies" or "collect Y items". Every haunting case you investigate tells a unique, touching, and sometimes devastating story. These are narratives that make you pause to reflect, question your own moral decisions, and genuinely connect with the characters involved. It's rare to find a game where the side quests are as engaging as the main story.

Solid Gameplay with Potential for More

The gameplay is definitely enjoyable and functional. The character-swapping system during combat is quite interesting, especially when you unlock abilities that allow combos between Red and Antea. Being able to alternate between the two without breaking the attack sequence is satisfying.

However, I feel the combo system could be more fluid and diversified. While it works well, it lacks that fluidity you find in other action RPGs, and it would be amazing to have more strikes and movements available.Combat can sometimes feel repetitive, especially with the limited enemy variety, but it doesn't compromise the overall experience.

An Experience Worth Every Minute

Banishers is one of those games that hooks you through narrative and atmosphere. The voice acting is exceptional, particularly from the main couple, and the choices you make really impact not just the main characters, but the entire world around them. It's one of those games that stays in your head long after the final credits.

For those seeking an experience rich in story, with well-developed characters and side quests that are truly worth your time, Banishers is an excellent choice.

I have to say that my favorite genre is story driven action adventure games but even with this, banishers still didn’t hit the way I thought it would be.
There’s still something missing for the people at dont nod to make their games shine for me.
Banishers is a good game and it has good ideas but the execution left a bit to be desired for me.

Story is great and the setting and script is very original and cool but unfortunately the characters and their dilemmas didn’t grabbed the way I thought it would be.
I thought that there was a lack of more impactful scenes during the journey and that for the budget they had, the game was a bit to long then what it should had be.

Visuals were ok but I just didn’t liked too much of the environments and felt they all looked a bit samey for me.

Gameplay was a major problem for me.
While the level of the main missions were generally good, the overall game feel left a lot to be desired for me.
Câmera work and character movement didn’t felt satisfying and it made the overall feel of the game not satisfying at all.
This and the fact I didn’t liked the enemy design and their movements good, made the gameplay a bit boring for me, specially being a game that is quite long.
Boss fights were ok with one in particular that i actually liked a lot

Music is good but I also didn’t found it remarkable.

Overall is a good game but the same way with vampyr, I really think there’s something missing for don’t nod to make great action adventure games.
Maybe if they improve their game feel and make more pleasurable the moment to moment gameplay, things can get better.
It’s also worth to mention that the game really had some framerate issues during many areas in the game, at least playing on performance mode on PS5Pro.

I was checking on the reviews just before before posting mine (I'm still playing, but I got enough to evaluate) and I couldn't believe that most of the reviews state this game as just an average 60-70%.

To me, this game is truly an awesome AAA, with really good graphics, combat, story, dub and sound effects and mostly, the dialogues.

The only missing piece here would be the music, as there isn't a score good enough to follow the game momentum, but with a good music and some polish, a continuation could reach a 100%.

Review: Banisher: Ghosts of New Eden
Overall Score: 71.5 / 100

Banisher: Ghosts of New Eden is a supernatural action-RPG that aims high with its emotional themes and haunting atmosphere but ultimately struggles with execution across multiple design pillars.

Graphics (75):
The visuals provide a decent gothic charm, with eerie lighting and shadow work that complement the game's tone. However, the overall world design becomes repetitive, and environmental variety is limited, making the game feel visually stagnant over time.

Audio (73):
Voice acting and ambient effects are functional but fail to leave a strong impression. The soundtrack, while moody, doesn’t carry the weight needed to support the story’s emotional beats or heighten key moments.

Puzzle/Quest Design (72):
The game’s pacing suffers heavily due to confusing quest design. Objectives are often unclear, and progression feels padded with unnecessary backtracking, which detracts from the narrative urgency and player motivation.

Combat (71):
Combat begins on a high note, offering satisfying controls and impactful animations. However, it quickly devolves into repetition, with limited enemy variety and mechanics that fail to evolve. The game appears to aspire toward the cinematic, weighty combat of God of War, but falls short in both flow and variety.

Boss Design (71):
Boss encounters lack creativity and tension. Designs are uninspired, and many feel like recycled enemies with more health. The lack of memorable set pieces makes these fights feel like missed opportunities.

Plot (71) & Character (71):
While the game presents a potentially powerful emotional arc, the plot is muddled and often directionless. Storytelling jumps erratically between scenes, and its subtle infusion of modern “woke” values feels more like a checkbox than a meaningful narrative layer. In contrast, South of Midnight — despite sharing similar thematic ground — offers a more immersive and cohesive narrative experience, better utilizing its characters to serve its folklore-driven story.

Pacing (68):
Progression feels artificially slowed due to the convoluted quest structure and poorly paced cutscenes. Narrative momentum is repeatedly lost, making it difficult for the story to build lasting emotional stakes.

Storytelling (69):
Rather than unfolding naturally, storytelling feels disjointed, with frequent tonal shifts and underdeveloped emotional threads. It tries to be deep, but the delivery lacks focus and clarity.

Mechanics (71):
Although the game introduces a range of systems — from gear upgrades to ghost abilities — most of them feel underutilized. Their impact on gameplay is minimal, and they rarely alter how you approach combat or exploration in meaningful ways.

World Design/Theme (72):
The ghost-ridden world of New Eden is rich in concept but shallow in execution. Biomes feel similar, level layouts are linear and uninspired, and enemy designs are frequently reused. Compared to the more stylized and engaging environments in South of Midnight, Banisher lacks a distinct sense of place.

Performance/Readiness (74):
While technically stable for the most part, the PS5 version suffers from occasional frame rate drops, especially in Performance Mode. These interruptions break immersion during both exploration and combat-heavy sequences.

In the end, Banisher: Ghosts of New Eden is a game with ambition — drawing inspiration from narrative-heavy titles like God of War — but its execution leaves much to be desired. It lacks the emotional clarity and mechanical polish of its peers, and while it occasionally shines, it often feels like a missed opportunity. Players seeking a more immersive blend of story and combat may find stronger offerings in South of Midnight or more refined narrative-driven action games.

Final Score: 71.5 / 100

Great story and acting. Decent combat, though a bit repetitive and lacks enemy variety. Exploration/loot isn't super satisfying but there are a few puzzle elements to keep it a bit more interesting. Graphically it looks good (not among the most impressive titles out there, though the art makes up for it). Oddly addictive gameplay loop. Sadly has the usual UE5 CPU-related stuttering issues.

An engaging premise with likeable characters, but the tacked-on, lack-of-feedback-laden combat coupled with the frequent modern-traversal-and-exploration gameplay tropes really drags the overall pacing & polish level down. That said, the God of War [reboot] / Witcher 3 / Murdered: Soul Suspect inspiration is fairly-obvious and, when it's all said & done, it pays homage to that mixture of gameplay reasonably well.

I am 20 or so hours in, and thus far, love the game. It ticks off a lot of boxes for me; a lot of depth into the stories, likable characters, fun historical setting. Searching for spooky clues, and putting angry spirits to rest, either by stabbing or by ghost therapy. I don't really know how big the world is, at this point, but I am looking forward to exploring more unsettling wilderness and meeting more of the ghouls populating these pre-revolutionary settlement towns. Turns out the real monster was the america we made along the way, I guess.
When it comes to the balance of fighting, talking, sleuthing, and making witchy friends, Banishers is the closest I have yet played to Murdered: Soul Suspect, and I love it all the more for that likeness.

I would have rated the game higher if the combat didn’t hold it back. It feels somewhat repetitive, but more than that, it lacks challenge and excitement. I like the concept of switching between the two characters, but Athea’s attacks feel weak—like hitting enemies with pillows. The impact just isn’t there, and only when Red strikes does it feel satisfying or effective.

However, the story is excellent. If you enjoy engaging side stories, the game offers a large number of side missions that are rewarding to experience, providing unique perspectives on the world and its characters’ lives.

It’s not an open-world game; rather, I’d describe it as a large, semi-linear world where you can explore multiple paths or backtrack when needed. However, at its core, it remains a linear experience, similar to Ratchet & Clank.

Great voice acting. The game doesn't waste your time with pointless collectibles. You might end up not caring about the gear you get from going out of the way, but at least it's more than some pointless text entry or number-go-up. Speaking of, a lot of the extra stuff also increases all stats by 1 so you can improve your character through doing extra content.
I liked the story well enough and was genuinely interested in most of the hauntings. There were a couple of fetch quests, but it's pretty fast to get around and there's something usually interesting in character development to go with it. I highly suggest give it a go. It's worth full price, given the time and enjoyment I got from it, but I got it on sale due to my backlog and not having researched the game beforehand.

This game started off so well. It looks beautiful, the main story and the side haunting cases were interesting, and the weight of choices is definitely present. However, the gameplay had a significant negative impact on the overall experience.

The beginning and the first few cases were excellent—I would have rated them 95–100%. But then, the traveling became increasingly frustrating. The map is too large, filled with barren, repetitive locations that lack variety. Traveling from point to point is tedious, and the navigation system operates on "mysterious" rules that take time to figure out. If the stories weren’t that interesting, I wouldn’t have finished the game at all.

It’s clear that God of War (2018) was an inspiration, but why didn’t the developers take more of the good elements from it? I kept feeling that certain features were familiar or similar, but something was always missing to make the experience feel complete.

Boss fights can be frustrating, like in Dark Souls games, but this isn’t the kind of game where you’d expect that level of difficulty. For example, there’s a boss fight with three phases (three different enemies). If you die, you have to start the entire fight over—even after a cinematic plays between phases. On top of that, you have to travel back to the starting point of the fight. It’s a baffling design choice.

It’s obvious which parts of the game reflect the developers’ strengths and which parts venture into unfamiliar territory for them. Sadly. :/

please DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS game!

I feel like it is flying under most people's radar and it is a shame!
it is a well written, very much story driven 3rd person RPG. combine it with combat that is simple but effective. it is mixing the souls-like light- and heavy-attacks as well as block, parry and dodge with some supernatural skills and it gets more interesting and effective when you combine those.
of course it might be repetetive after a longer time, but I'm around 12 hours in and the charme, atmosphere and pleasing graphics and mostly excellent voice acting really keep me enjoying Banishers more than I had expected.

Pro:
· nice graphics and...
· ... pretty solid performance
· fairly huge world consisting of semi open world segments with hub-areas to connect them
· enjoyable writing and...
· ...surprisingly great voice acting
· true and tested 3rd person combat with unique supernatural skills and combos

Con:
· depending on what you expect it might be a bit slow and require too much talking
· the camera and lock-on can be iffy, but are mostly fine

tl;dr:
If the trailers seem interesting and you are fine with a bit more of a linear and slow progression through a nice, far too underrepresented timeperiod with a neat twist: give this a chance.

Many of the puzzles felt cumbersome and obtuse. But I did enjoy the variety. And the stories being told, and the accompanying performances are so strong and earnest that I still highly recommend this game. The combat isn't particularly deep, but it is fun enough that it doesn't detract from the experience for me.

This could have be an outstanding game.
But all the open world bs with useless gear, collecting and overall so many stuff just to stretch the playtime, the juicy bits are just too far apart. As a 10-15 hour, story based game, this would have been awesome. But like this...

... the stupid open world kills the game for me. Despite me enjoying the story quite a bit.

PS: For story-focused players: play on Story-Mode or Easy, only do the green sidequests and the grew ones right after the main story. Ignore everything else and you may enjoy the game.

It's a pretty good game if you like good writing. It looks beautiful as well, and has a lot of good side content to offer. It's such a shame then that the combat is a slog and feels fairly clunky. I ended up lowering the difficulty to the lowest, but even then enemies are too bullet spongey, and there are too many forced encounters while trying to solve haunting cases. Imho the game would've been better as a pure story game with less combat, or with no combat at all, because the writing is really where it's strongest.

If you don't mind clunky combat that keeps interrupting you from progressing in the story, then I can wholeheartedly recommend the game.

Pontos do game
Positivos

Recomendo demais.

📝 Absolutely fantastic game. I think Banishers will inevitably be one of the most slept-on games of 2024. Russ Bain (Red) and Amaka Okafor (Antea) immediately pull you in with their performances and investment in the characters and their story. The storyline along with the Haunts you encounter throughout the game are really what keep you going and keep you sucked in. This is why my first playthrough was exactly 100 hours. I can best describe this game as a mix of Life Is Strange, Witcher, and Beyond Two Souls. The combat feels manageable and isn't too crazy to handle for someone who may not be versed in heavy combat games. DON'T NOD knocked it out of the park with this one and I hope to see more Banisher games/content to come.

👍🏻 My Pros

- The storytelling and character development in this game are amazing. As previously stated, the Haunts you go through with Red and Antea are really the heart of this game. All the cons listed below do not deter from how incredible this game is.

- With the game having 4 different endings, it offers plenty of replayability. Especially if you want to 100% this game, you'll need to do multiple playthroughs. To me, this is a positive.

👎🏻 My Cons

- Closer to the game's launch, the game at times did some FPS issues. While they've mostly been resolved, you still do have the occasional FPS drop in some areas. But not enough to ruin the experience.

- The in-game compass can be really difficult to follow at times. Because of this, the game could have really benefited from a mini-map or something else to help supplement navigation.

- I quite enjoyed the combat but some more variety and uniqueness in enemy types would be welcomed. Especially with bosses.

- Myself along with others have encountered bugs that can either prevent you from reaching collectible items, starting Haunts/quests, or finishing them. The game has been out for over a month now and we're still hoping for a substantial patch to fix them. As someone who wants to 100% this game, I hope we get a patch soon.

- When getting to a sealed-off or locked area, I wish the game would give you a bit more of a nod as to whether the area is locked off or inaccessible because of a lack of story progression or not. The amount of time I spent looking for a way into a certain area only to find out I couldn't access that area because I hadn't progressed far enough in the story was many. Opposed to "there's a key nearby to get into this area you just haven't found yet". Whether it's a verbal cue or even an on screen message hinting that we need to progress more would be so appreciated.

- A somewhat minor thing but Antea bickering with Red during combat got to be a lot at times lol. "Having all the fun?" "Let me help!" "Red, MOVE!" Sometimes her verbal cues were helpful but more times than not it was just poking at Red to switch to her. Even sometimes when you were actively using her 😅

❤️ Overall, I can't recommend this game enough. And I look forward to my second playthrough once the game's bugs get patched out. If you like great storytelling with Life Is Strange style choice-making wrapped up in a ghost hunter style and super memorable characters. Get Banishers. You won't regret it.

Story is excellent and the game looks beautiful, but it would be better without combat. At first I thought combat was OK, but it got quite repetitious after a while. It's almost always on flat small arena with multiple similar opponents. With combat it's only 3/5, without it would easily be 4/5. Good voice acting and characters.

Excellent story that was emotional throughout. Side Quests/Haunting cases were interesting and had an effect based off of my decisions.
Light crafting system
Skills & Progression system kept combat interesting throughout
Only negative for me was the Fast Travel system having to track back to campfires instead of being able to fast travel from anywhere.

My score 98/100= 98%
