While the gameplay has improved over the original, I feel like it losses some things that make RE4 so beloved. The tone is the most noticeable change, this game takes itself way more seriously than the original. Leon feels a lot more generic compared to how snarky he was in the original. And of course, the biggest casualty is Ramon's reduced part. In the original he was basically the main villain, but he's barely in this one. They changed his design and got rid of a lot of his wackier death traps like the robot. While this is better than the original in terms of gameplay, it's not better at being Resident Evil 4.

Awesome game, side stuff can be a little frustrating in terms of missing stuff and having to reload because of the design and it's not overall as scary as say 2 Remake but probably the BEST lite RPG action survival horror game I've ever played! Exploration, loot, upgrades, weapons, horror, action, varied locations, enemies and combat and flawless performances. Fantastic game!

Hoooooly peak this game is so good. One of the best opening sequences I've played through, reminded me of the Prey opening a little bit. I played on hardcore mode for my first playthrough to up the survival-horror aspect of it all, and it was definitely worth it. The combat is fun and satisfying, even if it can feel like a little much sometimes. The story is simple but fun and doesn't feel too dragged out, although the game is a lot longer than the previous RE games I've played. It was definitely challenging but didn't feel impossible or like my hand was being held the whole time either. This is just a genuinely good-ass game and I would be interested in playing the original now.

Introduction
I have fond memories of the original Resident Evil 4 game. It is one of the first actual GAME games I ever played. This one in particular, I actually couldn't play at first because I was scared and dumb as a kid, so I often resorted to just watching a friend of mine absolutely destroy and blitz through the game, which was great enough for me as a young impressionable kid. Before I played the remake, I already played the Resident Evil 2 Remake, absolutely loved it, but I also played the original Resident Evil 2, and when I started comparing them with each other, I couldn't help but feel disappointed by a lot of stuff that were cut out (longer sections of Raccoon City, Zapping System), were changed (Sewers, Chief Irons, the NEST), or was just not executed properly this time around (A and B scenarios). Then Resident Evil 3 Remake released, and I was just absolutely disappointed by it as a remake. When Resident Evil 4 Remake was announced, I was really, really worried that Capcom might screw it up. In the lead-up to the release of the 4 Remake, I decided to replay the original RE4 to relive my cherished memories of it, but oddly enough, something changed. I started to notice parts that didn't age well. Bits that never really made sense. Felt frustration during the gameplay instead of satisfaction. I was like, "Huh? Am I tripping?" I was noticing so many things that I found myself not really appreciating. The gameplay was fun! But the inability to quickswap weapons made the flow of the gameplay stiff for me. The story is great campy fun! But that was really all it was to me. The characters are charming, from heroes to villains! Leon was cool, definitely cool, an absolute standout during the entire original, but I also thought that he was kind of "surface-level", and all of the other characters felt that way to me. I had appreciation for the game, but it felt like for each thing I appreciated, my head would come up with a reason to dislike it a little. At the end of my replay for the original Resident Evil 4, I told myself that I had fun, but I also thought that I can see how this could definitely be better in a remake. When I started thinking that, I got really excited at the prospect of the remake.

Fast forward. I've finished Resident Evil 4 Remake. I've finished the game and Separate Ways on Standard and Hardcore difficulty, currently working on a Professional Run. And wow. Literally everything I wanted in this Remake, it's all here, and I am so, so happy with it.
It still retains the spirit of the original, all its bones are intact in this remake— but there is remixing done, and so many parts have been fleshed-out to really give this game so much more than what the original offered.

Gameplay
The gameplay is just downright buttery smooth this time. I expected quickswapping to be here, and honestly if the devs just settled on this, the gameplay would still be great for me. But then they added a parry mechanic with the knife, and GOSHHHH is it SUCH a satisfying move to pull every goddamn time, owing to how stylish it is. It incentivizes risky play by netting you great rewards if you successfully pull it off. They also fleshed out so many encounters from the original. For example, the first Garrador fight added stealth in it now, with environmental hazards to make it challenging, and it makes great use of your knife to beat the Garrador this time. There's so many cases like this in the entire game AND EVEN THE DLC. THAT'S JUST SO COOL.

Story
But what really, really took me by surprise, and what impressed me the most in this game, is the story and writing. Resident Evil 4 Remake is single-handedly THE BEST WRITTEN RE game of all time now. Leon isn't just cool now because he's an ultra badass action hero, but because he's a guy who shows compassion in the downtime, and exhibits inspiring willpower in the toughest of times. They even gave Leon a character arc here that started all the way from Resident Evil 2 Remake! This wasn't at all in the originals before! Ashley is SOOOO much better in this game that I so dearly wish we can see her again in future RE games. SHE'S SO CUTE I LOVE HER. And the story— Shinji Mikami said it best, Capcom took the script he wrote in just 2 weeks and fleshed it out to perfection. Luis' story in this entire game is undoubtedly the standout for me— because he made me cry. A Resident Evil game, known for its campy and goofy writing, made me cry.

This game is just perfect. It's everything I wanted in not just a Resident Evil game, but a game that works itself to be art. And my god is this game art.

Resident Evil is a franchise I never expected to like, horror wasn’t my thing until a few years ago, but ironically thanks to a certain pandemic I finally sat down with the RE2 & RE3 remakes & fell in LOVE. This was my first experience with RE4 & I’m so glad I finally experienced the magic this & the original have. The amount of love & care put into this game is so rare to find nowadays, this crazy win streak from Capcom since 2017 NEEDS to be studied in universities! Also screw GameStop for canceling my collectors edition pre-order 2 weeks before the game came out.
Nearly everything in this game is perfect, it has the best combat in the series by a mile even if I miss Jill’s dodge rolls, but we get a new parry system that feels so good to use. This game is tougher than previous entries even on lower difficulty settings but it never felt unfair, THAT is great game design. The music was amazing & atmospheric, speaking of atmosphere this game isn’t as spooky as RE2, but I found it spookier than RE3. The Verdugo fight in the cryo tunnels made me pause the game & wait for my partner to get home so I could muster the courage to keep playing. I haven’t been that tweaked out at something since Village’s DLC with the mannequins! The boss fights were AWESOME too! I love the cheesy humor in these games, plus almost all of the characters were memorably remade as well. I also really loved how long the campaign could be if you wanted to do everything.
If I had to nitpick, some of the puzzles weren’t the best. A couple flat out just annoyed me. I wasn’t as invested in the story as I wanted to be as much as I LOVE Leon & would name my first born after him. It was a great narrative don't get me wrong, I just prefer the original trilogy’s overarching story to 4, 5 & 6’s stories. I know it’s an easy target and it was vastly improved upon in this remake but I didn’t like escorting Ashley around. The only times I got game overs was because there was an adjustment period of getting used to escorting her. After getting used to her being around it was still stressful but that’s intentionally by design. I’m also usually not into side modes, so I bounced off of Mercenaries mode after having a little fun with Krauser for an hour or so. I weirdly preferred Village’s merc mode (mostly because I can play as the tall vampire lady in that).
I’m so happy this game is as wildly successful as it is, I want to jump back in for a campaign replay but I’ll wait for the Separate Ways DLC, which I’m manifesting everyday. It’s gonna be tough to dethrone RE4 from my game of the year spot!

Playing in VR was a very unique experience—I could spend several hours at a time in the headset, completing entire chapters in one go. On hardcore difficulty, it was challenging to aim and hit enemies accurately, and I constantly struggled with limited ammo and slow reaction speed. It would’ve been helpful to lower the difficulty by just one level.

At first, the game felt genuinely scary, but over time I got used to seeing mutants—except during scenes where I had to move through dark rooms, tensely waiting for a mutant to jump out. It was frustrating to replay entire sequences after being heavily injured or killed by tough bosses.

The game looked realistic and ran with almost no bugs. The story is touching, and by the end, I genuinely found myself caring about the characters.

Resident Evil 4 takes the franchise in a new direction. The gameplay is much more focused and refined around the combat, making the various boss fights a thrill to defeat. However, the horror takes a hit with the emphasis on the action.

In the end, Re4 is a very, very good game. But it might be a bit lacking for horror enthusiasts. If action is your preference, then I can easily see this being in your top 10 list!

85/100 almost tipping into 90. I needed that slight immersion boost, more notes and world-building, deeper characters, removal of chapter format, less clutter (purple flames and too many shops), and a bit slower game-pace.

Excellent game. A great action horror romp. Leon Kennedy is the king of one liners, roundhouse kicks and excessive backflips. Super fun game design, extremely well paced. Never felt boring. Serviceable story, but does well at what it tries to be. Ashley was a good companion character but not as good as someone like Ellie in TLOU, did go through better than expected growth. Feels like a game that would be great fun to replay often in the spooky season.

Even a little worse encounter design is one of the best when it comes to RE4. Just unique encounters with thoughtful level design all around, I can't think of another shooter that's doing it as well. It's fun as shit and a joy going from setpiece to setpiece. The mechanics and enemy behavior is designed around parrying. I actually like the idea of a parry with durability. However, to balance it, many of the enemies attacks have tracking where it's no longer possible to dodge with base movement. Controlling Leon also feels more sluggish with more inertia and start-up frames to balance the ability to move and shoot. It shifts the focus on fundamental spacing and positioning in close range to more of a reaction based system. Possibly the worst thing about it is the RNG hitstun where stagger could come at 1 bullet or 4. It's too unreliable to rely on in higher difficulties. It's a cheap way to insert difficulty similar to adding armor in melee action games. All of these things make it way too risky to get close compared to the original. It pushes a lame playstyle. The tried and true hit and run tactics that make things dull.

The original was already a perfectly designed game with art direction that felt extremely unique. Here things have been changed to be more generic. It now looks exactly like the remakes of 2 & 3 and many other horror games. You can tell exactly where it took influence with its changes (UI, knife, stealth, parry, gun sway). Like the levels are not tuned for stealth at all but they need to put that in there since it's trendy. Overall, it's has incredible combat but with its edges sanded down to appeal to wider audiences. It's not groundbreaking that people will talk about it forever like the original.

I always saw the original Resident Evil 4 on nearly every YouTuber’s list of “best games ever made” or “most influential games of all time.” I was told it was a classic because it revolutionized the action-horror genre—with its over-the-shoulder camera, intense combat, and smart enemy design. It struck a perfect balance between survival horror and fast-paced action, delivering a fresh experience that was both terrifying and incredibly fun.

While I never played the original, I now have finished this remake (still working through the DLC), and I can now fully understand the praise. The pacing, the action set pieces, the gunplay, and the atmosphere are some of the best I’ve ever experienced in a game. The characters are beautiful and lovable—Ada, Ashley, and the absolute goat Luis totally won me over. And oh boy, Leon’s cockiness and those ridiculous backflips—it's such a joy to watch every cutscene. I fell in love with the game, and more than that, I’m now excited to try other Resident Evil titles too.

Visuals and art direction are great. Progression and crafting was simple and satisfying. Boss fights were really cool. Locations are peak. Puzzles were surprisingly good and not frustrating to do. The enemy variety was amazing. Some of the enemies like the regeneradors(especially the spiked ones) alien mfs in the island are very creepy but designed well.

The dlc is also great, gotta love adas personality and the story still keeps up the mystery and suspense.

This was my first full playthrough of the Resident Evil series game and I have only watched fragments of other parts so I can say I’m new to the party, but honestly I didn't expect the game to be so deep and fun! I was afraid of a strong horror with jumpscares when actually it is a very interesting action shooter in a thriller setting with elements of survival and puzzles, which is fantastic. I like the loadout system which forces you to constantly manage your inventory. A big plus is the crafting system as everything we collect will eventually come in handy for something later. The graphics are beautiful on ps5 and the lights are well done, there is such a dark atmosphere. I don't like going back to previous locations in metroidvania style, but it's not always required, it just helps upgrading your equipment faster or to just discover new weapons. The plot seems to be standard, virus, possessed people, fanaticism - it all seems to be a part of something bigger but I will explore it rather soon in other games of the series. A little cringe is the constant rescuing of Ashley which is a very annoying character, and Leon does everything very cinematically (weird jumps and acrobatics for no reason), but it also has its charm - it just reminds us very much that this is a game, not trying to pretend reality. Anyway Leon is a beast, I loved that character’s mysterious and modest attitude, he is the man for the job. I can't hide the fact that I was terribly annoyed by some moments in which something randomly killed me on a one hit and I had to repeat the sequence for several minutes back. In addition, it's a shame that you can't buy ammunition in the store but it adds the constabt danger vibe. Shooting range is very cool to try, a nice addition compared to previous parts. As for the bosses they are OK, without much craziness, the enemies could be more varied and for most of the game they are very repetitive, also RPG is turbo OP. I find the game quite challenging and most of all its not scary - you can run and shoot and it's cool, but there are also darker sequences - it's nice that the horror is built by atmosphere and not cheap jumpscars. I don't have any emotions or nostalgia for the original, which was supposedly a very good game for its time, so I just rate this remake from my perspective as very enjoyable and I treat it as a good entrance to the series because I’m planning to try other parts aswell.

EDIT: After playing RE2 Remake and RE3 Remake I can say this game is actually between these two in terms of fun, now I see how Leon's attitude has changed after the events from Raccoon City. Aldi I think it’s equally good compared to RE8. I'm definitely looking forward for future remakes of previous or next parts of the series, especially featuring Leon, Jill or Carlos. Damn this series is so good.

Coming from RE2 Remake this game is so different, all the tension is gone really, apart for one part of the game I never felt the tension that RE2 had, even RE3 was scarier for me, but it doesn't mean that is worse that RE2R, just a different game, a lot more Action focused, and at the first stages of the game I wasn't really digging it, but the more I played, the more I liked it, and for me, all the game is perfect, the villains are great, you really is gratifying finally killing those garbage peaces of flesh.

Can't compare to the original as I haven't played it, but it's an almost perfect game on its own. Gameplay, visuals, and music are amazing. I love the new updated looks for all the characters as well as their voices (Leon and especially Wesker), I think they suit them well.

I didn't enjoy some areas as much as others, specifically the Island portion and Mike sections, but the village and the castle were great to explore. The least enjoyable part for me was the shooting range, I think it's poorly optimized for controllers. Getting an S rank for all shooting challenges was more difficult than doing a Professional S+ run.
