I do think Prey's biggest flaw is its lack of identity. It crosses everything in a checklist for a immersive sim. When I think of a prototypical game in this genre, I think of Prey. And yet the game is a wonder in terms of mechanics and exploration. The Gloo Cannon is a work of genius. Probably the most impressive immersive sim in that regard. Things might have been done before, but it does them bigger and at times better. Some things I didn't like: the ending was a bummer. Not in the depressing type of way but more that it was lame as hell. One other thing is the insistence on never-ending notes, emails, and audio logs to tell the story. It was compelling in some cases, but most of the time I thought of it as a hassle.

The first half of the game was far better where it was more of this survival experience. It never lasts the whole game as you get stronger and things become unbalanced and unfun in the players favor. It's just how ImSims are. The player mechanics are usually universal and lack more specific/contextual use. Making it hard to balance.

That final plot twist hit me like a truck. The front half was slow compared to the second, and the pacing felt a bit off. Incredible game, nonetheless, and 100% worth playing on any difficulty.

Prey is decent but far from the hidden gem people hype it as. Gunplay is okay, stealth could be better, and crafting is more confusing than it needs to be.

Upgrade mechanics are good & gives some variety to gameplay.

The story and characters are engaging, though backtracking can get tedious. Worth picking up on sale.

Loved the game, the story was pretty good, though the ending twist was a bit anti climactic and lost a lot of the impact sadly. Otherwise, up till then I loved it, the visuals are great, the intro was perfection, the combat and gameplay was interesting with a good balance of hard and strategic, the story as I said was good with a couple of weak points. This game definitely flew majorly under the radar, and I recommend highly that you pick it up and give it a try!

This is a fantastic game!
I'm incredibly sad I missed this when it came out and the studio has since been shut down :(

The combat took a while for me to get "into", but I was very hooked on the story and world from the start. Did my best to read everything I found as I just wanted to learn more.
There's a lot of mystery and intrigue that I was very much interested in and would've loved to see explored in another installment.

At most, I could maybe wish for more NPC interactions, but story isn't worse for not having too much of it.

There's a lot of options for how you want to play and I think every person's playthrough has a high chance be unique, which is extremely impressive.

I don't think I can recommend this more highly if you like slightly spooky vibes, interesting gameplay, coupled with a god damn amazing soundtrack.

RIP Arkane Austin

Really, what the fuck have I just played? I can't actually believe Prey manages to be nothing more than a slog to complete, and even the narrative, which should be its saving grace, falls short.

I really enjoy story-driven FPS games and had Prey on my list since launch, but something always felt off. A friend finally gifted it to me on Steam, and that’s when I dove into what turned out to be a disastrous experience with a game that was supposed to revolutionize the genre.

The intro is cool—predictable, sure, but cool. That illusion of a great experience ends immediately afterward. The controls and gameplay are so clunky it feels like a lazy console port, as if no one even considered how KB+Mouse actually works. You can barely adjust the sensitivity, sprinting sensitivity isn’t even configurable separately, and those are just the beginning of the problems.

Right from the start, you’re flooded with 999 items you don’t have a clue how to use. Why am I picking up banana peels? Drinks? Bullets? Alien gunk? Obviously, it’s for crafting, but where is the crafting station? Two hours in, your inventory is maxed out, and you still have no idea what matters. And even when crafting finally becomes available, the only thing you’ll really need is bullets—and trust me, you’ll need a lot because killing an alien feels like trying to bring down the Bullet Sponge God.

You might think, "Why not play stealth?" That’s what I tried. I maxed out stealth upgrades to the point where I could run silently—did it matter? No. Enemies attacked me without the detection bar filling up or, sometimes, without even seeing or hearing me.

But that wouldn’t even be an issue if combat weren’t the focus of the game. Yet here we are. The combat is clunky and outdated, feeling worse than games from over a decade earlier. Swapping weapons is awkward, enemies are repetitive but somehow still frustrating, and you feel weak the entire game—bizarre for a supposed power-fantasy sci-fi shooter.

And then there’s the convoluted mess of mechanics. Too many systems, too many abilities, yet few meaningful choices. The game loves to tell you, "There are always two ways to approach things." The problem is, the second option is usually so unintuitive and unclear that it might as well not exist.

The ship’s design? A structural nightmare. Despite being stuck in the same place for the whole game, it’s somehow easy to get lost after hours of gameplay. The map is just okay—it does the bare minimum, but even with it, navigation feels like a chore.

Quests are straightforward at first but eventually devolve into backtracking hell. You’ll constantly revisit old areas loaded with even more enemies and nothing new to discover. It feels like a lazy way to extend playtime, and honestly, it’s exhausting.

And then comes the worst part: the ending.

This isn’t about personal taste or narrative preferences. The ending is an outright failure on every level. Narratively, it has no development. Technically, it feels unfinished, as if the budget ran out. Gameplay-wise, it’s the weakest ending to a journey that already lacked any real peaks. Artistically, it’s bland and completely forgettable.

What do you get after slogging through all that? A slideshow that runs at 3 FPS for some unknown reason, followed by an awkward credits scene. Then, no matter which drastically different ending you choose, there’s no aftermath, no closure, not even a 10s cutscene showing ANYTHING —just a "CONGRATULATIONS YOU FINISHED PREY" screen and a stats table before getting booted back to the menu. I showed it to friends, and they couldn’t believe how anticlimactic it was.

In all, I had to fight HARD to finish this game, even keep playing after 2h was hard, I consider myself a winner! lol

A disappointing 5/10.

Vehemently okay. A fun timepasser but ultimately this type of game has been done before, and done better, lots of times. Of all the FPS "immersive sims" -- Bioshock, Dishonored, Deathloop, Deus Ex, etc. -- this is my least favorite. But did I pull an all-nighter to beat it? Sure, so I can't say it's bad despite its many faults.

Fans of Marvel's Benedict Wong will have a treat.

Will also appeal to long-loading-time enthusiasts.

For someone who injects aliens into himself to gain superpowers, I can confirm that a basic bitch shotgun is nonetheless the preferred solution for every occasion. Therefore this game is true to reality.

Prey is a great game, and one that I don't think is talked about as much as it deserves. It doesn't quite have the gameplay versatility/options of Dishonored (also by Arkane), and I don't think it's quite as good, but it's still a damn fine game. The setting of Talos I in particular is excellently realized, and feels very much like a real place you're exploring in full.

In general, this game does everything pretty well. There's a large amount of content for a game of this type, which took me 35 hours to do just about all of, and it's consistently entertaining. The worldbuilding is excellent, and there's a lot of neat near-future tech at use, with a lot of tidbits giving you a look into how they were developed and how they work. The story is pretty simple overall, but delivered well and with some neat twists and turns. Voice acting is great, music is subdued but good, the writing is excellent, so on and so forth. I also thought the zero gravity sections were done very well. There are also several weapons and gadgets each with their own uses, tons of human and typhon neuromods, and several ways to approach most situations. Like Dishonored, this provides multiple ways to tackle any given objective, although I don't think it's done quite as well as in that game. Generally speaking though, it's a big game with lots of neat areas to explore, tense gameplay with creepy enemies, and a feeling that you can approach objectives how you want (which is always appreciated).

I only have a couple of minor gripes about the game. My first issue is that loading times between areas can be pretty long, lasting at least 30 seconds usually I'd say. For the majority of the game I didn't mind, but later on once you've explored the map there's a lot of back and forth that means you'll be sitting through a lot of long loading screens. My second issue is with enemy variety; in terms of world lore I think it's pretty good, but in terms of gameplay it's slightly lacking. There are a good 12-15 enemy types, but one is just a tougher version of another, and three are just modified versions of another one but with different abilities, and as a result it can feel a little boring later on. Other than that, any complaints I had were small enough that I can't remember them right now.

It's not a perfect game, but it's an interesting one with a unique and compelling setting, executed well. The ending also has a neat twist to it, and sets up an interesting sequel if we ever get one. Definitely worth playing, especially if you like immersive sims (Dishonored, Deus Ex, etc.).

Prey is an extraordinary game that offers one of the most immersive and rewarding experiences I’ve had in a long time. I completed it in 30 hours, including many of the side quests, and every moment felt packed with purpose and discovery.

The narrative is a highlight, brimming with complexity and depth. It’s a game that keeps you guessing with its twists and mysteries while exploring philosophical and ethical themes. The universe is intricately crafted, with every log, terminal, and audio file adding to the lore of Talos I. While I didn’t fully grasp every detail... The layered storytelling kept me hooked. Your choices significantly shape not only the ending but also how characters and factions respond to you, making every decision impactful.

The gameplay in Prey is incredibly versatile. The gunplay is solid and satisfying, though it’s more about tactical thinking than brute force. Resource management and situational awareness are key, especially in harder difficulties.
The power system is a standout feature. You can invest in human skills like hacking, engineering, and medical proficiency, or embrace Typhon (alien) powers to shapeshift or unleash devastating attacks. The ability to combine these powers with your weapons and tools allows for endless experimentation. Want to turn into a coffee cup to sneak past enemies or deploy turrets with a boosted engineering skill? The game lets you tackle problems your way, and that freedom is exhilarating.

The characters aboard Talos I are written with care and depth. Many have distinct personalities, and their stories often intertwine with the main narrative. How they see you depends on your actions, and the relationships you build—or destroy—feel meaningful.

The side quests are another strong point. Far from being filler, they enrich the world and often lead to memorable moments or moral dilemmas. Some of the best discoveries and most intense encounters in Prey are tied to these optional missions, which makes exploring every corner of Talos I even more rewarding.

Talos I is a marvel of design. It’s an interconnected space station that begs to be explored. From the polished corporate offices to the eerie, shadowy maintenance areas, every location tells a story. The station feels alive, with systems like airlocks, security measures, and even gravity working in logical and immersive ways. Revisiting areas with new abilities often unveils hidden paths and secrets, making exploration feel endlessly rewarding.

While the graphics are slightly dated, Arkane’s signature art style more than compensates. Talos I’s retro-futuristic aesthetic, combined with the haunting ambiance, creates a world that’s both beautiful and unsettling. The lighting, environmental effects, and design choices enhance the atmosphere, drawing you deeper into the story.

Prey is a masterpiece of immersive sim design. Its combination of storytelling, player-driven gameplay, and environmental depth makes it a must-play for fans of the genre. The choices you make, both moral and tactical, add a level of personalization that ensures no two playthroughs feel the same.

Completing it in 30 hours gave me time to soak in the world, tackle side quests, and experiment with different approaches. While the graphics might feel dated, the gameplay and story are timeless. If you’re a fan of games like Dishonored or Bioshock, Prey is an unforgettable experience that you absolutely need to try.

I think it's one of the most underrated game I've done so far. Incredibly complex, fun and amazing experience.

I could quibble about the physics, difficulty levels, and how the game explains itself (or doesn't) in inconsistent ways, but this is an all-timer. Lots in the station to explore, lots in your potential skillset to explore, great level and monster design. Clearly wants to be evaluated as an extension of the "shock" games, so... as creepy but way less dated than SS2, way more elegant and less chaotic than Bioshock.

I think Deep Storage is the point where I broke down on Normal difficulty twice years ago (a combo of "I don't know what you want me to do" and "every time I try to explore and figure stuff out I die in 5 seconds"). Easy seems cheap for the first few hours but allows more space for exploration, and I enjoyed it way more and actually got somewhere.

But yeah, this one's been in the back of my head for a reason all of those years, it's great.

Lots of great things about the game, including the skills that really let you change your playstyle and gives you multiple ways to tackle every obstacle. Calling it a spiritual successor to Bioshock is an understatement, as it gives that vibe everywhere you turn. Gameplay is very tense and always engaging. Unfortunately, the story did not completely land for me and I expected a bit more, especially with some of the padding that seemed to happen late in the game. Loading times were also a slog when you need to backtrack across the space station, but overall a solid game.

Don't know if it's just me or does this feel like a modern day Bioshock? An FPS being paired with special abilities that you are required to research enemies to unlock extra stuff. I'm not complaining because Bioshock is a top 10 for me, it's just interesting the similarities.

Regardless, such a phenomenal game. Played every side quest and was executed marvellously. The atmosphere, environments, progression, characters, story just the whole package was a blast to play through. The freedom in the game is glorious too. One thing I loved about Dishonoured was that it felt like a game where you were playing with cheats but it's just handled so well. Same goes with Prey, slowing down time, shrinking into small objects, creating clones and the fact you can open doors with a nerf gun. It sometimes feels like sequence breaking but it's perfectly intentional and works.

The combination of in station and out of station environments was a big highlight for me. Not only did I spend a lot of time searching every corner of the station, I did the same with the stations exterior. It was extremely satisfying having a realistic space environment too, pretty much dead silent and a constant velocity in the direction you travelled. I never thought about having to counter strafe in space before until I played this which is such a cool feature.

My only issue but at the same time favourite part of the game was the combat. Especially pre-psi abilities with a stock gloo gun. I just felt kind of useless and out gunned in every fight, but I guess I could attribute that to the high difficulty I chose and unfamiliarity with the mechanics. Also not having enough Neuromod's to unlock each psi ability that was strong against each Typhon type was annoying, it just lead to a cycle of gloo spam into shotgun pumps until the enemies died. Don't get me wrong I really do love the gloo gun, which is why I said it's was my biggest issue but also favourite part. Couldn't really just shoot my way through everything had to be combo'd with the gloo gun. But after about 3 hours it was nothing but fun all the way through to the end with a story that was constantly adding new elements to stay fresh and twisty.

Overall, an underatted gem that is a must play.

Prey is a brilliant example of a typical Prey immersive simulator, with brilliant decision making hidden in both form and consequence. And the plot is a brilliant sci-fi story with very good plot twists.

Despite this, I didn't like the stealth at all and the combat is awkward, so the game stands out for the story and its decision making, not its combat. But for that there is the easy mode, or directly the story mode, and with that the title is enjoyed in what really makes it great.
