I love this game! It was one of the first point-and-click adventures I played back in the 90s! It's easy to play, the puzzles are relatively easy, and the humour is great! A definite must-play!Updated 2 Months Ago

The writing is great, and I enjoy Sam & Max as characters. The big problem with this game is just how bad it can be at telling you what to do next. Some of these solutions seem pretty random, and if you miss an item early on it's a pain in the ass to go back and get it.Updated 4.5 Months Ago

I very much enjoy the vibe of these characters, and that's mostly where the positivity I feel for this game comes from. The puzzles are too often far too obtuse or nonsensical. Or things are so poorly communicated. Like when I tried to get the tar. I used the cup, he swiped at the tar, and I assumed he got it. But no, it turns out he didn't get it, and I was instead supposed to combine the cup with the extender. But this is not communicated at all, which is just outrageous. Sometimes I just don't understand how game designers in those years could be so hostile to players. Or just getting to the hot tub. Why is it so awkward? It's so obscure that I would never have thought it was even possible to get there. And so many objects are awkward to select in the environment. It would help tremendously if objects were highlighted when hovering over them. I didn't even know what a rasp was, much less why the sasquatch would want it. Using the binoculars was so strange. I had to furiously click around on the screen to try to make something happen. Why? Who would make a game that way? It's frustrating because they were so good at absolutely everything else: the music, the voices, the animation, the writing. This game was relatively breezy compared to other Lucasarts adventures I've played, which matches the carefree and irreverent style of the characters. This is all probably why I like this more than the others in spite of the similarly poor puzzle design. It's almost to the point that I just feel like it's better for a person not really to treat these as video games, and instead just use a guide and treat it like a nice interactive adventure. In that light they are far more enjoyable.Updated 10.5 Months Ago

One of the few classic LucasArts adventure games that I really don't like. While the art and animation is spectacular, the whole mood of the game feels unpleasant to me. Everyone in this world is bizarrely aggressive and unlikeable and I don't click with the zany humour. The plot is a mess. But the game is completely ruined by the awful interface design introduced here. No verbs anymore, just awkward icons that you have to cycle through. No text hotspots or descriptions for things in the environment, making the world feel small and empty. No dialogue options, just unintuitive images with no indication of what they will make you say (rubber duck?), and unhelpful dialogue at that. Too many hidden exits to other areas that easy to miss. Incomprehensible puzzle logic because things have to be wacky here.
I guess I just hold LucasArts to a higher standard than this. There's some nostalgia from playing it as a kid, but even back then I didn't entirely get on with it.

Way too slow and constantly had to look up walkthroughs because of missing items or no idea of where to go next. I enjoyed the art, animations, characters, voice acting, and the soundtrack, though sadly I don't have the patience to finish it.Updated 2.5 Years Ago

probably the most accurate portayal of the sam and max world in terms of like correlation to the comics. deffo a wacky little point and click game. Some of the puzzles can be a little bit obtuse as it be with this genre, so watch out for that. Otherwise, overall pleasant lil game hereUpdated 3.5 Years Ago

“You crack me up little buddy.” Everyone knows that Lucas Arts was the king of point and click adventure games and quirky humor. So how about one where two freelance cops go around the USA, but they’re actually a talking dog and an anthropomorphic rabbit? Is it any wonder that it’s gonna be hilarious?
This story is about Sam—the dog—and Max—his bunny best friend—trying to solve the mystery of a missing Bigfoot and his equally missing girlfriend who has the neck of a giraffe. After they get the call, the duo sets out on an adventure to get to the bottom of this by going everywhere in the country. Along the way, a country western singer and his sidekick show up to meddle with your VERY high class detective work.
Of course, a main facet of this game are your two main characters. Sam is a pretty no nonsense kinda guy who still enjoys his time. He is also very resourceful which helps when in a puzzle game! Whereas Max is an absolutely deranged little gremlin who does whatever the heck he wants as long as Sam will let him. Together, they’re absolutely hysterical and do crazy things to get the information they need from their environments. Another great touch is that Max interacts with the environment while you use Sam to explore. For instance in one place with an automatic door, Max constantly makes it open and close for no reason other than to torment everyone around him.
Along the way you’ll find a colorful cast of characters, from a lady who grows produce in the shape of famous people, to a mole boy who watches TV all day inside a carnival ride. You’ll also get a lot of different items in the places you visit to get clues on where to head next, and of course, solve puzzles!
None of these puzzles are very difficult either. I got through the game with only having to use a guide about 5 times total which is pretty good for a game of this nature. Though, the final set of puzzles in the game are very convoluted and certainly the worst in the game. They aren’t even difficult, just not explained well at all, and you have the *entire* game to explore to figure out what the answer is. It’s simply too broad of a brush to figure out on your own in my opinion. Other than that, they were all very reasonable, as I mentioned!
Another complaint I had is the controls. You select your actions—commonly known as “verbs”—by right clicking to cycle through your options. I much prefer the presentation of other point and clicks where your verbs are on the bottom of the screen. It simply comes across as very clunky and something which could have been done better. After a while I did get used to it, but I think this is a case of fixing something that wasn’t broken compared to Lucas Art’s previous creations.
Over all, this is a really fun game. Sam and Max’s personalities make the game for sure. Seeing them banter and enjoy each other’s company as they explore the landmarks of this cartoony USA, including it’s gas stations, is a real treat. If you enjoy the rest of what Lucas Arts created, I think you’ll definitely enjoy this! I even think this would be a really good introduction to the genre for newcomers, as it’s very cute and silly while having a nice story and characters! Happy clicking!

It's basically a completely unhinged cartoon that you interact with. This has its trappings, and some of the puzzles require cartoon logic (which is hard to come up with yourself), but the sheen and presentation is so dang good that I find myself forgiving it for a lot. If you're not allergic to walkthroughs or hint systems, or if you just really enjoy obtuse adventure games, give this one a play, it's a lot of very weird, very creative fun.Updated 6.5 Years Ago

An absolutely infuriating point and click adventure game that's pretty much an example of everything that could go wrong with this kind of game. I could have rated it lower but I can't deny that it both looks, animates and sounds pretty good for what it is, it just happens to be the puzzle logic that renders it a chore to play.I got held up in a variety of places, not so much trying to find a solution to a puzzle, moreso trying to actually find the puzzles that I clearly had the answers to, with the game never so much as giving any hints, characters merely repeating the same, uninformative dialogue like "I can't use this", seemingly logical ideas just go completely unexplained leaving you wondering why. I used hints in 3 places; 1. finding the pecan candy, 2. how to interact with the robot in Bumpis' mansion and 3. How to use the final items. Hint 1 is a good example of the game being extremely hard to read at times with various interactive items blending into the background. Problem 2, has a similar problem, and problem 3, having basically finished the game, I simply could not figure out what to do with them. I had missed something relatively simple but again with the lack of valuable information, no in game information would have directed me to the solution without me making that relatively simple realisation.
It's a real shame, the game is so well made otherwise that to be tripped up by the worst sins a P&C game can make is so disappointing. Not sure if I could recommend it unless you are really interested in either adventure games or Sam & Max as a series. Skip it unless you really want to play it.

A paradoxical mix of captial-C characters whose quick witted dialogue contrast the game's glacial pacing --- frequent 5-10 second delays between dialogue and obtuse, backtrack-heavy puzzle design.Updated 7 Years Ago
