I honestly think that Shantae games have reached a level to be guaranteed fun. While they rarely are brilliant within the genre, they still manage to have me play with a big smile in my face throughout each of her adventures. Shantae and the Seven Sirens goes back to its Metroidvania roots as Shantae must search the island for the titular Sirens, gaining abilities that slowly unlock more of the map.It is uniformly fun throughout its brief runtime, especially given the brilliant artwork and music of WayForward. Some additions seem superfluous, like the monster card collections, but they add another layer of reward to the game.
Again, this is another fun game in a series that is proving a reliable source of it.

After my Half-Genie Hero playthrough, I was a bit anxious and skeptical about this entry but every doubt was subsided very fast, back to the open world approach with warps. Risky has more appearances than she should have in both this entry and the last one where she was the actual main antagonist, here she isn't, the Sirens are. Speaking of they're nice bosses, each with their gimmick and way to fight with the transformation you get. Dances don't transform you this time around, Fusion Coins does, Dances gives you the other Half-Genies abilities which is a nice change. Although the amount of damage you take is absolutely ludicrous, at least in Half-Genie Hero you can get the Bikini Armor pretty fast, here it's quite far and it's only a 25% reduction. small gripes aside the world is extremely fun to explore and the story is genuinely good, I was suprised multiple times and I really didn't expect to see Amalee for the final boss but she was no match to the best item ever, Scimitars!Updated 5 Months Ago

Haven't played it, but given that it's a Shantae game it probably features bullshit unfair level design of the highest order, somehow made worse by WayForward's condescending "solution" of offering the option to make you invincible to the point of removing all challenge.Almost as if instead of actually designing a better game with actual fair game design, the devs just went "Oh here crybaby, since this game is clearly too hard for you, we're just gonna make it impossible for you to lose so you'll quit whining about it." Because it's not like that completely removes any satisfaction out of playing a game, nor is it at all possible to make a game challenging while still keeping it fun and not ruthlessly punishing the player for the most minor of mistakes. The only way to make a game challenging is to make it hard as balls and not fun to play at all, and the only way to make it fun is to remove all challenge and effort to the point it plays itself, so sayeth the all-knowing game industry.
Fuck the game industry and fuck all the playtesters and toxic asshole gamerbros who enable this type of spiteful game design.

I decided to replay this game last night while high on weed and while playing, I discovered the right words to use when describing my discomfort with this title. It lacks an identity. I think at this point, it's accurate to compare Shantae to the series of New Super Mario Bros. games that Nintendo released in the late 2000's. They were objectively good games, but towards the early 2010's, when New Super Mario Bros. U was released, there was a fatigue in the community over this specific series due to how samey it all felt. It lacked innovation, it was safe and watered down. These are criticisms I can apply to Seven Sirens. All of the enemies are the same, Shantae still controls the same, all of her magic is the same outside of a different batch of fusion dances, and so on. She controls excellently and the level design is passable, but I can't really bring myself to care about it after I'm done playing. I think I liked Pirate's Curse a lot because not only it was a great game on its own, it shook the status quo. Not only was Shantae a regular human, she now has to team up with Risky against a new threat and use her own gear to navigate levels, rather than relying on her dancing transformations for things. It was interesting and I wish the series would go in a similarly innovative direction again, because Seven Sirens is just "a run-of-the-mill Shantae game"; a passable Metroidvania with a story that doesn't take itself seriously. This game is decent but I would much rather go out of my way to try something that I think would be great instead of decent.Updated 10.5 Months Ago

The Undisputed Champion of Overwhelming MediocrityAlthough I strongly admired its superbly punctual controls and overall fast pace, this series still hasn't really done enough for me to keep me interested; especially 5 games this far in. I honestly don't know how to explain this properly, but the game just feels a little too self aware of what it is and wants to be in the fact that it is indeed a video game and continues to naively misunderstand any additional design supplements like its Metroidvania-esque levels that it so desperately wants to be categorized as.
+ Punchy controls, action commands, and overall speedy pacing
+ Pleasing presentation featuring charming cutscenes, colorful visuals, and fluid animation
- Particularly rigid level design that feels more like isolated levels stiched together rather than one large world
- Fetch quest game progression STILL present for the 5th game in a row in conjunction with the bad level design

A great metroidvania style game. Love all the games in the Shantae series and have played and beat almost all of them to up to this point. The characters are always charming and the humor of the game is great compared to other metroidvania's that tend to have a darker tone. Squid Baron will always be my favorite character in this series and while he doesn't have a lot of time in the game, I loved his little dialog moments.Updated 2.5 Years Ago

enjoyed a lot!loved the fact that it was a metroidvania finally.
the game wasn't anything different than usual shantae,
but it was enjoyable as always.
only annoying part was how many backtracking i had to do.
while the game provided marker on the map, having a bit more marker would've helped, like where i saw a squid heart and such.
other than that, a solid shantae experience.

Pros:Colourful, breezy fun.
Fantastic music and character artwork.
Short and sweet.
Cons:
Mechanically dull. Platforming depth is never exceeded beyond the first transformation.
Gameplay loop remains the same throughout, no progression beyond the fist transformation.
Dances are all functionally the same.
Two out of four of the transformations are functionally the same.
Opt-out storytelling from the writers. Lifeless story and world in the written and gameplay sense.
Inferior to just about every other Shantae game, but fun in its own league.

TL;DR for Shantae Fans: Graphics are a bit lacking compared to HGH, however gameplay is near flawless.TL;DR: A fun relatively easy metroidvania, that has a fun story and fun characters, lots of funny little bits of dialogue from NPCs and such, worth playing if you're new to metroidvanias/platformers, or looking for a straightforward no BS metroidvania. Anyone looking for an super deep, rich, complex narrative won't find it here.

way too easy and loading screens take too long, i don't think the previous games had them? there is no item that reveals all collectibles on the map so i had to scour the entire world several times. i was missing 1 collectible so i gave up and looked up a guide. the visuals seem to be an improvement over half-genie hero and honestly a huge achievement to make a vector art platformer game look cohesive and not disjointed. i didn't notice that some of 2d assets from half-genie hero were reused so props to them.Updated 4.5 Years Ago

Might be the best Shantae game yet! Really enjoyed it! The art style is all the best parts of Pirate's Curse and 1/2-Genie Hero. It looks fantastic. The controls felt a little tighter than previous entries. Loved the story/characters/dialog. Good stuff, as always. Jake Kaufman wasn't available for the OST, but the team they hired did a pretty good job with it and at times it even sounds a little like it came from Kaufman.Only 2 negatives I can think of. 1: The game seemed a little on the easy side - I always had way too many gems and a full inventory of healing items, so I could just tank damage in the boss fights without thinking too much. 2: It would be really nice if the map marked uncollected items (like Metroid does) or if you could place pins/some other markers on the map manually to keep track of that kind of stuff (like Hollow Knight). Oh, I guess one more little one - the map should tell you the name of the location you're in/looking at, or at least when you enter the area it should pop up on the screen beyond the very first time you do so.

This is exactly what I'm looking for in a Shantae game. If it could improve upon Pirates Curse in any way, it would be better. Still a great time, and the animation is gorgeous!Updated 5 Years Ago
