Loooong game, but one of the best DQs. The Definitive version is definitely the way to go, rather than the standard version.

Fun JRPG, in the traditional turn-based style. Combat is fun, but repetitive. The characters are good and endearing, but a bit too sweet, almost on the cringey side. There's also way too much dialog. Something that could be communicated in a couple of sentences takes four to five cycles in a conversation. These things are what's kind of killed the game for me. The nail in the coffin: the length of this game... I made it through the first act, after nearly FIFTY hours of game play, only to find out online that there are TWO MORE full acts. I'm realizing that it's just too long, and that's going to require a repititious grind.

Maybe I'll give it another go, but just pick up where I left off... the storyline is definitely not too deep that I wouldn't be able to just pick it back up again, sometime in the distant future.

In my personal opinion, the game is very complete but has problems that ruined the experience for me a lot.
Specifically:
- The music, although beautiful is too few and repeated too often, I did not feel many times that I was facing a boss because of the music
- The story, though well written I found it quite trite, and the few twists quite weak
- The loading times, while very fast, bumped me quite a bit in some cases because they were artificially slow (particularly when you summon the whale). Obviously this is a small downside but one that over 100h of gameplay makes itself felt
- The characters have little depth or go on by stereotypes, which didn't lead me to get attached to anyone or actually care about what came next.
- The side quests, I think is the worst thing about this game, follow the patterns of quests from 10 or even 20 years ago, where most of them are fetch quests without any interesting interaction, only searching as much as possible among the nooks and crannies of a place indicated by the quest itself.
- The map, honestly strangely done poorly, in the sense that there was everything needed to make it work best but they didn't connect it properly. The fact that you only have to see the map of individual places when you're in it and can't choose by location or anything like that made the side quests (which I finished all of) even worse for me than they already were.

What can I say, I am the first time approaching Dragon Quest and I have noticed that it is and remains a very good JRPG, but it maintains patterns for my taste now too classy and "old" in many respects.

I am not sure if I should count this game as something I played last year, or if I should save it for this year, since I think I will end up splitting my time with the game evenly between the two. This may perhaps suggest how huge an undertaking this latest Dragon Quest title is, but so far, I feel it has a much better pacing than the last monstrous DQ game I played (DQVII). That may be a huge reason why I am enjoying this game so much.

With its charming set of characters, perhaps the best cast in the franchise’s history, along with an extremely solid and engaging main plot, this is easily one of the best in the series. Combine that with a pretty good combat system that you can increase the difficulty off (a must in my opinion), and you have something special.

At its core, the Dragon Quest series is about serving a comforting traditional JRPG experience, from its simple-yet-engaging turn-based combat, to its charming cast of characters and clear-cut story, along with its unforgettable iconography. That shouldn’t be considered a bad thing, especially when it is served to such high quality as DQXI does.

In definitiva, DQ11 mi è quindi piaciuto o no?

Final score: 80%

So far, I consider this the best JRPG I’ve ever played. It does almost everything right. Despite its length, it never feels like a slog—the side quests are well-paced and always add something meaningful. The character development, progression, and combat system are just outstanding. It’s brutal (in a good way).
I was on my way to the platinum trophy but couldn’t finish the game because, near the end of Act 3, my progress got reset due to a poorly implemented feature when switching from 3D to 2D mode. I was careless and paid the price, but honestly, it shouldn't have been designed that way. I ended up having to finish the game by watching playthroughs.
This was going to be a 10/10 for me, but because of that, I’m forced to score it significantly lower.

The game is amazing!! As a Dragon ball fan I could relate so many things to its story and designs (I guess Toriyama's influence was way over his character designs) ... it is like a re tale of Dragon ball al allong... and characters are well written and stay true to themselves even at their "transformation arcs"...
Aside that, I could relate the game in general to other games that I love, like Zelda (it is so similar to BoTW somehow), Final Fantasy VII (in general, yeah both are RPG), latest Like a Dragon (yeah, I know they took so many ideas from this game, so...) and others...

BUT there were some things that made the experience worse...
- FIRST the localization, I hated it, I don't know why they took so many licenses in changing ALL the names, even when it doesn't need translation at all (ex: Martina=Jade are you kidding me???), then the dialects, while you hear them talking "normally in japanese, the subtitles are a mess (the girl's school was the worst), if it were resolved with a correct use of italics and bolds, that would be perfect and enough; then the type of letter font, is not appealing it doesn't makes you focus when reading, after a while is tiring (also all the whole interface was so out of love) and you start skipping dialogues, even important ones :P
- Game's lacking content, don't get me wrong, it has plenty and some sidequests are great, but almost everything is just grinding... even more in the "post-game" (somehow it got me hooked idkw)...
- When you get to unlock everything there's nothing more to do (I guess it happens in every rpg)
- Navigation through places is awful (even more in the arc 2 where you have to relearn all places)
- The 2D part while it's a great homage to its legacy, If it were optional (and not required for the platinum) I would 100% skip it.
- THE MUSIC... while it's great (even for a person who's not fan of orchestral music like this one) there are so few, and it loops all the time (I know I can mute it, but that's not the point) ... it should have had an approach more like BoTW imo... I ended up choosing the DQVIII music over the XI because it was more pleasant for long sessions and less tiring to the ear...

Anyway, the game's amazing and I loved its characters... I felt that "first time thing" for the first time in years!! it was easy somehow (or I grinded too much) and I loved the auto combat thing for the grind feast, made it so much bearable...

I don't know if someone besides me will read this, but don't get discouraged by the hours it takes to beat... it is an amazing adventure, totally worth it!! This one goes to my all time favourite JRPGs without a doubt, only those aspects (being more objective in my subjectivity :P) that holds me back to give it a 10/10; BUT even if I got the plat, it didn't tired or bored me at all, and that's something to have in mind.

Thanks for everything Akira!!!

Act 1 was generic and boring, but the story in Act 2 is really interesting and at this point the gameplay picks up. However it's very long, and boring for the first 30 hours.

If you like 90's era JRPG's, this is basically the only modern game with that type of gameplay. Best of the Dragon Quests, but can be improved if they allowed more skills to be learned earlier and if the later quests weren't such grind fests.

+Great range of colourful enemies
+Fun class system with unique characters
+Charming story spread throughout the game
-Combat offer movement but there is no strategic use for it
-While charming story there is nothing that hasn’t been seen before
-Late game can get repetitive as it repeats a lot of areas from act 2
Overview:
Dragon Quest 11 is a large and extensive JRPG with some great colourful and charming characters with there own skillsets and classes and has a charming story if not a truly unique story which you haven’t seen before. The game is long with a wide range or areas with there own style however the final act you find yourself repeating areas from the second act. Overall a solid JRPG with some great charm.

I’ve been meaning to play this game for years since it originally came out. I’ve since then completed its full story in about 100 hours.

This was my first dragon quest and i have to say, i found its world, characters, and even monsters amazingly charming. Defeating certain monsters and seeing the way they move never failed to put a smile on my face.

Its battle system was robust, with characters taking on multiple traditional “jobs” in battle. The characters and their relationships with each other and the main character are multifaceted, and this is reflected in the battle system.

Content-wise, Dragon quest has side quests in addition to the main story, and the side quests are relatively easy to find and complete. Additionally, the game has a crafting system and an item list that will tell you where you can find items after you’ve already found them. It was surprisingly easy and satisfying to find the materials to craft some of the strongest gear in the game.

The story is simple, but it’s charming in its own way, despite not necessarily being a robust and complicated tale. It is an epic tale however, spanning 3 acts and probably taking 80 hours to complete without doing all the side quests.

This was an amazing game. It’s kept me occupied for about 6 months, on and off, but it was a perfect game to pick up and play and hang out in before going to bed for those 6 months. Love this game <3

This truly is a fantastic game. It's actually pretty hard to believe that this started out as a 3DS title, even if the west never received that version of it. The things that stand out the most are the quality of life touches that aren't present in every RPG: visible enemies in the overworld instead of random encounters, entire party gets exp from every fight (so long as they're alive), ability to instruct your party members to a specific fighting style so the player doesn't need to manually pick all their moves every time, and regular autosave points so you never have to go back too far if you do get defeated. All of these things are easy to take for granted, but make a massive difference to the playability of this game.

The musical and visual style are both exceptional, even if a lot of the music does end up getting reused a fair few times throughout the game, and the visuals don't quite match the cinematic cutscenes which is a shame, but not the end of the world. The characters all felt super unique and distinct from one another, which was also quite impressive, even if I personally found a few of them to be quite annoying. I must admit, I do think the game went on for a bit longer than I would've wanted. A tight 35 hour narrative would've fit the (rather generic) story being told here, although some of the "monster of the week" sections were actually a little creepy and kinda interesting, others were a little weird in my opinion. A rather unexpected thing for me was just how funny the writing is in this game. Some of the enemy names are absolutely brilliant, and there is no shortage of amusing dialogue either.

Overall, I'm so glad that I finally got around to this game! It had been in my backlog for years and was the first Dragon Quest game I ever played, but I'll definitely be checking out more from the series in the future.

My problems with this game boil down to how they seemed to want to make everything as easy and streamlined as possible to reach the widest audience they could. It ultimately felt like a pretty trip through a standard JRPG plot, well told as it was, but without much to challenge or provoke thought. So many things were designed in this way, from being able to allow the AI to fight battles for you (as a totally viable strategy 95% of the time) to almost never even having to try to avoid enemies in the field as you can just run around them, to dungeons that are really simple and straightforward. It's disappointing because I've loved Dragon Quest in the past (especially VII) and the game is so beautiful and charming.

My impressions replaying with some Draconian Mode features--Hero must survive/Tough Enemies/Exp cutoff for weak enemies. I love it, has made this run what I wished it would have been the on my first clear--challenging but not incredibly punishing. Highly recommend these be turned on even for first playthrough if you have any RPG experience.

Enemies can actually catch you off guard with hard mode, and the exp cutoff feature just makes sense to keep things somewhat competitive when you're hunting materials or rare monsters, so you don't overlevel. "The Hero must survive" feature might annoy some, but I feel like it adds some tension to combat knowing you can't retry the fight immediately. I think those three features are a great middle ground of being challenging without punishing the occasional mistake too harshly.

I've been playing RPGs and JRPGs for about 20 years, and something about this game just hits every note of the classics that I've come to appreciate, with just enough modern polish to make it even more accessible for new players. Some may think it's an outdated game design with the linear areas, but to me it feels comfy to be constrained by the map a bit. It's done well, unlike in some similar games like Final Fantasy XIII (overall pretty enjoyable, but wasn't really impressed by the level/map design).

For DQ11, I don't think it would have been better as open world design like they had initially discussed--it feels better to be as it is, not too overwhelming for exploring a bit. Just my opinion.

Overall, it's like a love letter to and harmonization of all the best things turn based RPGs have to offer. Can't wait to see what DQXII will do to follow this one.

Act 1 and 2 are so great, but act 3 brings it down a few notches by how grindy it is and how it back tracks some character development; it completes the story though, a story that's pretty cookie cutter jrpg but it's good. The characters are one of the best parts of the game, regardless of the game dragging on longer than it needed to.

Act 1 and 2 are a 9/10 probably a 10/10, act 3 is a 7/10.

The mermaid portion and beyond has some of the worst writing ive ever seen in a game.
- the kiddy jokes get old. (i enjoyed them at 1st but they very much start to feel forced)
- boss fights are VERY RNG heavy with added gimmicks to make some even worse. i only died like 3 times but the 2nd attempts always made me feel like the game wasnt about skill. *me: miss, miss, miss. them: AoE + crit 2x* VS *me: hit, miss, hit. them: miss (STAND AROUND DOING NOTHING) then tickle you*.....
- trash fights started fun but become brainless. *control main character or fight wisely* *show no mercy x2* *focus healing* = i mostly play when running around or on boss fights.
- items. not sure if these get used more later in the game. the only item i used was magic water for some mp
- the pep quests are designed to get you to grind exp. i quit the 1st two after 30min+ (each) of not being able to line up the people needed.
- pep felt useless since only 1 or 2 people would trigger during any boss fight and its 100% unnecessary for trash mobs
- music. as much as i like DQ sounds and music it just felt like they tossed in stuff from other games and theres nothing original
- RARE MONSTERS...this was such a cool idea....1 quest and never seen again? im not going to fight every monster 30 times to see if it has a rare version or if that rare version even has something worth the time to find it. would like to have seen pep quests replaced with more of these. missed opportunity?: instead of pep powers, monster super attacks. find the rare, kill it, equip the super to a character.

a mermaid waits for 50 YEARS on/around an island for a man she saved and knew for a couple months cause shes too stupid/stubborn to swim and see what happened to him after he leaves and promises to come back (cause theyre in love). you come along and she sends you like a dog to find out. when you report to her the man is dead she doesnt accept what you have to say and makes the both of you GO THERE TOGETHER ANYWAYS. mermaids are supposed to have to marry someone to get legs....she simply puts on a veil and gets legs. next she KILLS HERSELF over a dude she knew for a few months when its said their life span is OVER 500 years...this is 100% a 1st draft writing effort by a stalker 12 y/o

retired after getting all orbs and seeing im still in act 1 of 3. dropping another 25hrs+ would ruin the parts i did enjoy.

+ crafting. having the choice to buy good gear or make really good gear is nice.
+ exploring. really enjoyed looking for mats, recipes and treasure
+ graphics. simple, bright, akira toriyama
+ gay guy my favorite character
IF I LIKED THE GAME
+ 100% could see replaying in 2D mode

for me this game fails to figure out who it wants its audience to be. you got kid jokes, bright colors, endless forgiveness, easy to follow quest markers, story that tosses stuff in just to continue the story even if it makes no sense, and simple graphics. on the other hand you have puff, puff/bars, garters, see through stalkings and cleavage, RNG heavy boss fights, suicide, possession, and a pervert old man quest.

Pretty fun, but I felt I was done after "beating" the game, but not moving on to the considerable end game. I know that it's a major part of the experience and I might get back to it eventually, but that was enough for now.

It was very easy, but it allows you to skip battles by seeing enemies on the map. I basically skipped every single avoidable fight and was always at an appropriate level for a challenging but doable battle. Only 1 or 2 bosses required me to "catch up" by grinding a single level or two, and these were always because I needed a particular spell (a group heal, cure a status effect, etc., that I got at the next level up and was clearly assumed for the fight).

Great fucking game, a bit long in the 3rd act going back in time is always hard in video games, going through the same bosses is kinda boring even though you change the outcome, and i feel like veronica's death held way more weight and was a bolder and more interesting choice throughout, that said, even though it's not the best JRPG i've played, it really shows how much this series is the pillar of the genre

Excellent jrpg. Recommended. A little long winded. The feel goods make up for it. It’s definitely shorter than my run time. I played 90 hours on Draconian mode. I stopped at Hotto hot springs the second time. The mini forge was a bunch of hours. I finished the game regular about level 68-70. Super fun. Wish I took the time to finish draconian mode. Maybe later. Too much in the backlog right now.

너무 정통? 뻔한 느낌이 너무 많았지만 그래도 재미나게 플레이함

The story and characters are incredible. Despite the simple gameplay and grindy side missions, I believe the story for this game makes up for it in a huge way and proves that games can tell stories just as much as any other piece of media.

Dragon Quest XI S was such a fun game. I enjoyed the game from start to finish. Sometimes the completion could be frustrating, but there was so much to do during the whole game. I thoroughly enjoyed the game.
