I've tried many times to get into JRPG's and every time I feel like I'm missing something. I've tried every FF before (even VI) and never got into them, only finishing 7 and 7 Remake. This was one of my favorite game experiences ever. It sucked me in and I really loved the pacing and all the characters. I was put off by the long completion time but I am glad that it ran to around 20 hours for me. It was the perfect length and I am looking forward to replaying it again and again.Updated 3.5 Days Ago

Some people claim that this is the best game in the series, but I didn't find it that compelling. From its steampunk setting to its peculiar camera angle which seemed more zoomed in than in earlier titles. The fact that it is really unclear who the primary character is did not help either. Which is it—Celes or Terra? That Terra, who advanced the plot in the first half of the game, is optional in the second half is absurd. It is also quite exhausting and difficult to grind to manage three entire parties. Although, it did finally bring us recruitable party members which is a JRPG stable, most of them were kind of underwhelming.Updated 1.5 Weeks Ago

The first half of the game was very interesting. After the turn-point I had to take a break. After some months I was able to progress and finally finish it. The second part of the game is better with a guide and the last dungeon was boring, however, it made the end worth it.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Great game! Use a walkthrough to get the most out of the game though. So many missable party members which is traditional for an old school JRPG. Final Fantasy VI is a game that well deserves its reputation as one of the series best. Character customization and classes have been refined to their peak, with a massive party that allows for a wealth of options. The story is more thoughtful and developed, with much more time dedicated to characters and their individual story arcs. That said, it is still a SNES game, and many story beats and character motivations have to be explicitly told to the player to hurry on to the next beat. At one point the primary antagonist steps directly in front of the party to declare his exact motivation to himself before shuffling off-screen. It's a product of its time and I'm not going to say a SNES game should go beyond that, especially due to how breakneck the pace of FF6 actually is. Like Chrono Trigger, a full playthrough with all side quests done can be completed in under 30 hours, and if that means a few characters have to give you tl;drs on their tragic backstory then that's perfectly acceptable. Of the pixel games, I don't think it's a stretch to say this is easily the best of the bunch, and even in the wider scope of the series it's inarguably one of the best.Updated 5.5 Months Ago

Great game, the reason this isn't a 100% is because there's quite a bit of UI struggles, which I understand that this is an old game, but the PR (Pixel Remaster) should be able to give it a new polish while keeping the vibes the same.Great story, amazing music. Would highly recommend. :)

Fantastic Final Fantasy game, they really hit their stride with this one. Being the last of the "Pixel" collection it really encapsulates 6 Final Fantasies worth of development. It feels like they took the best elements from the first 5 and packed it into a well written, well paced and fun final installment (for pixel Final Fantasies). Great story with excellent and enjoyable characters. I think where this game really shines is the replay-ability, you have the option to play the game with so many different characters and use them in a multitude of different ways.Updated 7 Months Ago

Man, I went into this game genuinely expecting it to be a little overrated, but I realized that once I hit World of Ruin all of those preconceptions were shattered and I was genuinely enjoying myself. I am going to get my issues out of the way first so I can laser in on the pros of this game, but I actually feel like the gameplay of FF6 was it's weakest aspect due to the homogenization of the characters by the end. Essentially, due to how you level up stats in this game, magic is almost unanimously stronger than physical by the end game, with some exceptions in Cyan, Sabin and Edgar. However, in the case of Sabin, his special Blitz ability only has 2 actual physical attacks, while the other 6 are all scaled off of magic which just feels bad. The character abilities and relics are still fun, essentially combining the job system of FF5 with the character specific abilities of FF4, but once you're in the final dungeon over half of your party is going to be focused on magic damage and abilities primarily, which I found a bit disappointing.
But that's where my big disappointments end. I have a few nitpicks like glitches that effect dialogue very rarely, but those fringe situations aren't even remotely close to impacting my enjoyment of the rest of the game. Every single character is likeable across the main cast, and while I will disagree with the sentiment that every character can be a main character, at least half of the cast definitely fills the role of "main character". Without spoiling anything, a lot of the character moments and backstories that are set up in the first half of the game are paid off in full and then some in the second half of the game, and by the time you finish the game, assuming you've done most/all the content, you're gonna have a strong connection to a lot of these characters. Kefka is a really fun villain to hate in addition to the already great ensemble, like throughout the entire game, he's one of the most entertaining characters to have on screen, which is why it's also a little unfortunate that he doesn't have as much screen time in the second half of the game.
Despite a few hiccups here and there with gameplay and systems in the game, plus a few other nitpicks, I genuinely really enjoyed my time with this game more than I expected to. While it's not personally one of my GOATs, I do very much understand why it is for some people.

I think of all of the pixel remaster games I liked this one the most. It has the best characters, music and story so far. I was really enthralled with the game the first half, the entering the second half of the game I became a little annoyed of the sequence of events, or I guess the lack there of. Its hard to experience what the game has to offer once act 2 kicks in without a guide, which is a bit of a shame. Also there are way too many characters, each with their own gimmick.Kefka is a great villain, and his boss fight and music is iconic only second to sephiroth in the next final fantasy game. I enjoyed my time with the game overall, and it ranks high in my Final Fantasy games that I have played. I feel like RPG have improved since the SNES times. Recommendation for this game if your coming straight from playing the previous 5 final fantasy games is to take your time with this game. It rewards people who are patient and can learn all the intricacies, which I have to say I lack a little.

Oh man, where do I even start with this one? I’ll just say it outright: this is my favorite game in the series so far. It’s got everything I love - great characters, a satisfying progression system, impactful leveling, and an amazing story. It scratches all the right itches. You can grow and level the playable characters however you want, and the freedom to get absolutely overpowered is there if that’s your thing. Some of the characters are optional, which is a fun touch, but everyone’s got their own story, which you can explore at your own pace or skip them all togheter, but honestly, why would you? Their arcs tie into the overall plot so beautifully, and it makes the world feel alive.
The story is where the game really grabbed me. There’s this whole "stopping an aggressive empire" plot, which sounds like typical JRPG fare, but the way it’s fleshed out here feels so much better. It takes that classic “power-hungry empire exploiting resources” theme and runs with it in ways that feel surprisingly deep. Without giving away spoilers, it’s about greed, humanity, and what happens when you push too far.
The Endgame is where this game shines even more. The way the characters evolve, how their arcs come together - it’s just so satisfying. You can feel the weight of everything you’ve done up to that point, and it makes the final hours hit like a freight train. And let me tell you, the final dungeon? Absolute perfection. The gimmick there (don’t worry, no spoilers) caught me off guard in the best way. It’s easily the most unique and memorable final dungeon I’ve seen, not just in this series, but in any JRPG so far.
Oh, and good lord, the soundtrack. Every character theme feels so distinct, the battle music slaps, and the boss themes are unreal. If you’re the kind of person who plays with headphones on, you’re in for a treat.
Now, I’ll admit, the game isn’t without its flaws. Trying to 100% is a nightmare: Gau’s Rages, Strago’s Lores, and the sheer number of missable enemies in the bestiary are enough to make you question your life choices. It’s the kind of stuff that makes perfectionists cry, but hey, you don’t have to go that far if you don’t want to. I didn’t.
Still, I can’t stay mad at it. The sheer amount of optional content is incredible for its time, and the freedom it gives you to explore the world at your own pace is unmatched. Whether you’re building out your party, chasing secrets, or just soaking in the world, it all feels meaningful and not like filler just to pad the runtime.
TL;DR; FFVI blew me away. It’s a solid 10/10 for me. If you love JRPGs - or just games that leave a mark - do yourself a favor and dive in. It’s one of those experiences that’ll stick with you long after the credits roll.

As far as 2D Final Fantasy games I think this one takes the cake (not that easily mind you), it has everything to make it exciting, fun, intriguing, etc and goes above and beyond.Pros:
• Excellent music and art direction, from pixel art to immersion and cutscenes.
• Addictive combat that is rewarding and super customizable.
• Great main scenario and side quests that are well scripted and engaging.
• A high number a characters to develop and choose from.
• Amazing pacing.
Cons:
• The handling of some female characters is not that good in a few parts, nothing too severe but definitely is worth noting, it is a game from another era so it's kind of understandable but not except of critique.

FF6 is typically the general consensus favorite pixel Final Fantasy if not favorite overall. While I really liked a lot of what they did for this game, I couldn't say it was my favorite. I really enjoyed the first half of the game's story but the second half just felt too long as it is just "go find your friends and then fight the last boss." This wouldn't be too bad except that this game has one of the largest casts (if not the largest cast) of heroes in the game and in the beginning of that second half, you start with one of them and go from there. I did really enjoy the leveling system and the Esper system. The music was great as with pretty much all FF games. I would still recommend this game to anyone that is a fan of JRPGs.Updated 9.5 Months Ago

First time played the SNES version in 2024, no nostalgia goggles here, not a FF fan, only played FF 1-5 before (NES/SNES).At start, the only thing which is engaging is the story, because until you get the Espers, you wonder why this game is so weak gameplay wise compared to FFV, you gain almost nothing from leveling. After getting the Espers the leveling feels much better. Plot and characters are much better than any of the previous games, but as in the previous games dialogs are also somewhat overextended and whiny. It is becoming a theme in FF, hope it will be better in FFVII.
The biggest gameplay problem is that you have too many characters and if you want to level all of them then it is tedious since you can have only 4 characters in a group, sometimes it feels like you spend too much time in menus.
For example, different Espers have different bonuses on level up, but at the same time you need them equipped to learn their magic abilities, let's say you want "Magic +2 on level up" Esper equipped when one of your mages raises a level. But that Esper is currently equipped on another character which learns Esper's magic, so you want this "Magic +2" bonus on your mage, you need to monitor the remaining XP and switch the Espers just before the mage levels up, then switch back again for the other character to keep learning magic. Now think that you need to manage 4 active characters, 10+ characters overall, and 20+ Espers. Maybe you don't really have to do it to win the game, but I like to level efficiently if I see the way, and this system got me tired. As a comparison in FFV you had only 4 characters to manage so it wasn't that bad.
The second half of the game is a bit too long for my liking, also a bit too open, so you might need the help of a guide for some things.
The advantages of the game were written a thousand times, overall the game is good and worth playing, and on the moment of it's release, the only better JRPG were Dragon Quest IV, V, and Phantasy Star IV (I'm playing the games in their release order with no nostalgia for any of them)

One of the BEST JRPGs of all time. This was the first Final Fantasy game I played way back on the GBA when I was young. I remember thinking it was super fun and it had a great story but little did I know of how impactful this game was to JRPGs and the gaming industry as a whole. It set a VERY high bar for me when it came to JRPGs and it helped shape how I viewed video games today. It even helped me in learning how to read! Revisiting this game as an adult now gives me feelings of nostalgia but more than that, appreciation for video games as a whole. Like I said, I played this a long time ago on the GBA but never actually finished it. Now that I'm an adult and it released on the Switch via the Pixel Remaster, I had to pick it up once again and finally conquer it. After 25 hours and countless battles, tons of deaths, failing the lines during the opera scene, spamming Phantom Rush, and finally smacking Kefka, I finished FF6 for the first time.
As I was playing, I tried to picture myself in 1994 when this game released on the Super Nintendo. I tried to picture all the surprises that happened throughout the story and tried to put myself in the shoes of someone experiencing the game for the first time. I experienced most of the game as a kid so I knew everything of what was going to happen and I wish I could go back to when I didn't. I can't imagine those that were playing for the first time and getting through the floating continent and then seeing the aftermath of that. Starting off with only one character and having to go around the now decimated world to regroup the entire party. Seeing where each character was and how the events that passed changed them or for some of them, didn't change them but had to re-contextualize their life and what they were fighting for.
I don't want this review to go on forever but I have to say that there's a reason FF6 is on my list and many others' list of the best games of all time. This level of storytelling in a video game was uncommon when it first released and it's not hard to see how this game influenced and inspired so many games that we have today.

Updated 10.5 Months Ago

Final Fantasy VI is widely considered to be one of the best Final Fantasy games and one of the greatest RPGs ever made, and that's why I had to play it someday.Playing Final Fantasy VI around 30 years after it's initial release for the first time makes up for an absolutely fascinating experience.
First of all, I found Final Fantasy VI's story to be surprisingly simple at first, but it's accompanied by some of the best characters in the series; they're very likeable and engaging characters who enrich the narrative significantly. Also, the plot twist halfway through the story is simply mind-blowing and it makes the whole story so much better than it already is.
As for the gameplay, it's actually good, it aged very well, and its character customization and RPG elements are really good too.
The graphics still look very nice as well and the music is incredible even to this day.
As for the flaws... honestly, I don't really have anything negative to say about this game; it's pretty much a perfect Final Fantasy experience all the way through in my opinion.
Pros:
+ Rich narrative
+ Compelling characters
+ Enjoyable gameplay
+ Interesting RPG mechanics
+ Amazing music and visuals
Cons:
- None
Final Rating: 10/10
- Masterpiece -
Simply put, Final Fantasy VI is arguably the best Final Fantasy game ever, and it's also one of the best RPGs of all time, even to this day.
Do I recommend it?:
Must-play for Final Fantasy fans or RPG fans in general, period.
Highly recommended for newcomers as well, but keep in mind that Final Fantasy VI is an old game with pixelated graphics and basic turn based combat system.

Final Fantasy VI is an important game in console gaming history, not just within in one of the longest running, and most popular, RPG series but as a game that pushed the boundaries and capabilities of storytelling, characterization, world building, and crafting cinematic set pieces. Previous games in the series did one or two things really well, but it was the case that the complete package wasn't fully there to create a "GOAT". VI in my opinion was the complete package, doing everything well without making sacrifices. The game starts off with this sombre opening credits of three mech walking across a snowy field, utilizing mode7 graphics to great effect. From the onset it's apparent that the tone and setting are completely different from previous games: steampunk, instead of medieval fantasy; dark, cold tones instead of warm colors. It quickly establishes some of the backstory of one of the characters AND the main villain, Kefka.
This game doesn't have ten different villains, surprise 'real' bad guys, or evil characters whose motivations were just misunderstood all along. Kefka isn't so well regarded because he's the best of the final fantasy saturday morning cartoon villain stand-ins, but because how effectively he represents the most vile and contemptible aspects of humanity. During that first initial flashback he gloats to Terra how he has made her his complete slave, then forces her to burn anything and everything that resists the Empire. Shortly afterwards, we see his whiny and petulant side by attempting to reduce Figaro to ash for the sole reason that he felt insulted by the king (and playable character) Edgar. Later, Kefka shows how little he regards anyone and everything, besides to curry favor and power with the emperor Gestalh by employing machiavellian tactics to remove General Leo and then casually poison all residents of Doma. He displays cowardice by running away, instead of fighting Cyan, the sole survivor of Doma. Kefka drains Espers, the source of all magic, then discards them in the trash like a used handkerchief. He (at least temporarily) gets exactly what he wants: to create a ruined and broken world to lord over, not because he wishes to rule and for others to obey but for the simple fact that he views all other creation as a mote of dust to be casually flicked off one's shoulder.
Great RPGs should have great antagonists that instill a driving motivation, and friction, for the character(s). For me it's a show, don't tell kind of thing. I want my antagonists to be around, do terrible things, and make me hate him. Kefka is the best final fantasy villain because he does all of that, gets pretty much what he wants and embodies the opposite of the protagonists. Of course, those protagonists also need to be well developed and FFVI doesn't disappoint.
The cast of playable characters is expansive, but a lot of care went into making them feel unique and fleshed out. Most of the characters overcome personal struggles and grief, and that's accomplished through both narrative and gameplay (side quests and such). One of the defining themes of FFVI is that individually characters show their weakness and failures, but grow together and display strength through unity. Terra, a person who has only known life as a slave, learns to trust through the actions of others. Celes, with her guilt for her role in the actions of the Empire. Cyan, overcoming his grief and the blame he puts on himself for the deaths of his family and Kingdom at the hands of Kefka. Each character has their own story to experience.
One other thing I love about the characters is how their identity is tied to the Final Fantasy class archetypes. Locke, the thief. Shadow, the ninja. Etc. Etc. Even though it's not my favorite system, Espers and magicite (how characters learn magic) ties directly into the universe lore and story for how magic is supposed to work. Having context and backstory makes the world more believable.
Speaking of the world, the game does a phenomenal job of introducing areas then revisiting them again and again but in unique ways, while also providing each town and locale a unique itentity. For example, you travel through South Figaro once on the way to recruiting Sabin and meeting with the Returners, then later go through it again effectively in reverse but playing only as Locke under occupation from the Empire. Many of the towns and areas are like this.
The soundtrack remains the best complete work of Uematsu and the PR version arrangements are incredible. The graphics back in 1994 were some of the best and richly detailed ever and hold up incredibly well and the cinematic nature of the game, through the opera scene, was ground breaking. The sprite work is fantastic. The game has some issues with pacing in the second half, and gameplay isn't as deep as V, but altogether it remains perhaps my favorite in the series. Even though it was the least needed, the pixel remaster did this fantasy game justice.

Completing the evolution in storytelling that began in their own right with FFIV (and continued outside FF with Dragon Quest V and Phantasy Star IV), Final Fantasy VI managed to outdo the previous effort in terms of emotional firepower, thanks to a grand, extensive concentrate of tragic tales revolving around death and loss. It's basically a tale of two games, two sides of the same coin - the playful first half and the mournful second half. The former indulging in wacky, aimless minigames, and the superior latter comprised of emergent, lengthy scenes telling equally brutal backstories as the player tries to navigate and reclaim the wasteland before them. One half greatly benefits the other in their peculiar contrast. In a way, this split functions as a metaphor for the destruction of old JRPG values and their subsequent replacement; out with the grandiose exuberance, in with the somber, contemplative mood. Gau and Celes are perhaps the cast's biggest 'victims' subplot-wise, but the rest potentially set new standards in poignancy.Echoing all those ambitions is the versatile combat system. Often dismissed as imbalanced or broken, it actually led to some of the most liberating battles yet, carrying busted but entertaining synergies and combinations that only add to its fun factor. In addition, character-specific skill progression grants extra gameplay identity to its large roster beyond moveset or stats, while the Esper system - essentially a rework of FFV's job class mastery, can at least impact character stat growth, thereby opening up even more build opportunities.
A turning point for JRPGs, Final Fantasy VI was the dividing line between the old grindy era and the party/character focus that defined its future.

Final Fantasy VI is well regarded for good reason, it's classic FF at it's finest, the art is fantastic, the music is on point and the story is full of the kind of melodrama and suddenly very dark tones we've come to expect.Updated 1 Year Ago
