A SELFISH DEED IS NOT FREEDOOOOOOM

A very fine remaster of a... decent entry in the series. Everything is as solid as ever - the variety, the combat, the presentation - and while the new characters and their arcs are good, the overall plot is quite dull and severely lacking in genuine drama and interesting villains.

Better than the very bad 3, this one tries several things. The review relies on a spoiler, so everything will be in spoiler.

The idea to split the plot across 4 characters makes it a bit hard to follow at times, and break a bit the rhythm. But it's also what allows the title to try itself at several battle styles, opening the door to this for future entries. The story was also much less of a pain than 3, even if it is stupid at some point, especially at the end.
But yeah, it feels like trying to innovate on an old formula, that has not that much novelty to offer at this point for veterans of the series. It's more of the same, but told in a different way.

No idea why Yakuza 3 is the impopular one when Yakuza 4 exists. Really, I love the series, but they've made some terrible choices here. Let's start with Yakuza's usual strong point: the story and characters. Well unfortunately the game starts off on a sour note, since Kiryu is nowhere to be found. Worst of all, we're introduced to Akiyama.

You may like the character, but he doesn't have many redeeming qualities and makes for a poor main character overall. A slacker that never really have a stake in anything and feels shoehorned in a story, and a world, where he does not fit. Where exactly did the accountant turned hobo become a martial artist? At least with everyone else you can understand where their strength (for Kiryu and Saejima) or martial prowess (for Tanimura) came from. And frankly, Akiyama is a jerk who believes he's worthy of passing judgement unto others (and also doesn't mind sending a single mother to sell her body as a test). I prefer Tanimura, a forgettable character, and that says a lot.

The story unfortunately falls short of being interesting. The idea to delve deeper in Majima's past thanks to the appearance of Saejima is good, but trying to tie together every single plot point since the first Yakuza game is a little too far-fetched. The motivation of characters like Kido or Arai aren't exactly tangible either, making for a story that feels hollow and a mere pretense to butt-kicking. Oh and how not to mention the infamous plot twist that will get most people facepalming. In retrospect, it could have been worse, but it ends up looking like a joke.

Gameplay wise, the different protagonists give rise to new fighting styles, which are pretty interesting. But Yakuza 4 also features some of the most awful, cheating, obnoxious boss fights I've ever seen. Bosses that have one frame reactions to everything you do, that will prompt you for some button mashing worthy of a turbo-controller, and block strings that allow for a single light punch every minute. The first time I played the game, I had to revert to Easy difficulty during one of Tanimura's fight (you know the one), which was the first time I felt like I had to do something like that in a Yakuza game.

The rest is pretty much the usual copy and paste content from previous entries, with one interesting addition: the ping-pong minigame. A fun one, especially against Rio (although her model doesn't look too good).

I really liked the way this game was split between the 4 characters. Yakuza games are long and can drag if you're doing all the side content but splitting up that content between 4 characters freshened it up quite the bit. Also I feel like its easy to see the seeds of Yakuza becoming a party based RPG as it did in Like a Dragon/7.

-Lacks a second location
-Last twist does not feel deserved
Review:
Yakuza 4 is more of the same for the yakuza series with the game not really moving forward from the previous game in terms of gameplay. It includes new characters which have a great varietyu in there movesets compared to kiryu but there is nothing really new in kamurocho and it also lacks a second location. I feel that Yakuza 4 is a missed opportunity, it’s not bad it just lacks anything to make it stand out from it’s predecessor

Honestly I really loved the story for this one, but the combat and boss fights were some of the worst in the series to date. Everything was spamming attacks, blocking, and “grabuza” 24/7 and it ruined parts of the game for me. Only reason I’m scoring this high is because there were so many memorable moments that I enjoyed in the story.

Yakuza 4 is one of the Yakuza games of all time, it isn't really a highlight of the series but isn't bad by any means. It just feels like another Yakuza game, yeah this game introduced multiple player characters to the franchise but it doesn't have much else going for it. If you've played 0-3 leading up to this, then it'll be a pretty predictable story that feels like the series is running on fumes as many scenes feel like retreads of previous games. Despite Kiryu being the protagonist with the least to do in this game, the new perspectives don't offer much, Saejima and Akiyama are great characters who flesh out the world but Tanimura feels under-baked both in story and in gameplay. Which sucks because he's the one you have to do the final fight with, which wouldn't be a problem if the boss fight wasn't already one of the worst in the franchise from a design perspective but unfortunately it is. Not like everyone else's final bosses are that much better anyways, most of them hold little to no narrative weight, which again, can be said about Kiryu's entire presence in this game. Also the plot twists are straight-up horrible and make the main antagonist seem like an idiot but at least this story has Akiyama so it's at least got more than one character you can look forward to seeing on-screen. Akiyama also has a fighting style that's on par with Kiryu's in-terms of quality too, Saejima's is good if you prefer tank type characters, and everyone feels different which keeps the gameplay feeling fresh. Saejima does a really good job at giving us another perspective of the Tojo clan as he isn't nearly as untouchable as Kiryu and you can tell how much harder his life has become because of past actions. The humor these games are known for can also be seen pretty well with him whether it's through his revelation animation or his side-quest where you punch boulders. But he is a stark contrast to Akiyama, whose care-free, lackadaisical attitude is so refreshing to see and is always fun to watch. Although ultimately, these aren't enough to bring Yakuza 4 up to the heights of 0 or Kiwami 2, it doesn't have the pacing issues that 3 had but that game somehow felt like a more entertaining, no antagonist in 4 is on par with Mine that's for sure.

What a game; so many peaks and valleys, a very real culmination of the series up to this point.

I'd argue the storytelling is unironically some of the best and worst the series has to offer at this point. Gorgeous characterization, wonderful development, followed by some of the most egregious, thematically tonedeaf asspulls in the series. Now, far be it from me to accuse Yakuza of jumping the shark. It's a series staple by this point; and by this game, I'd hope you know whether you're in or you're out. But to have such a powerful narrative setup, that culminates into a sort of fizzled-out payoff was kind of a shame. It's still more-or-less a (by the end, maybe less,) wonderful story. It just could have been elevated to much greater heights if they had just let sleeping dogs lie.

Otherwise though, it's a mechanical refinement and expansion of Yakuza 3, another game I very much enjoyed. All 4 protags have unique flavors of combat, with a skill progression system that I genuinely think is the best the series has to offer at this point. No fluff, straight to the point, I like it.

I could go on and on about Kamurocho being "lovingly rendered" once more, or how the substories are great; again and again. That's par for the course by this point, and what makes writing these posts on this series in particular, without spoilers? Kind of frustrating. On the contrary, though; the character specific substories are very much among the best the series has to offer. Delving into these new (and old) characters and fleshing them out with how they interact with the world around them is genuinely super engaging, and clearing substories, once again, to the surprise of no one; remains one of my favorite series mainstays.

Yakuza 4 is such a strange mixed bag, between highs that could arguably be considered series peaks, and valleys that could be considered all time lows, at least narratively. Don't get me wrong though; I personally believe it trends toward the former. And mechanically? Chef's kiss.

Phenomenal game through and through, it just takes a narrative tumble here and there, which I can forgive.

The drama continues

I think this is a step up from Yakuza 3 overall, but it still lacks a lot to be desired when comparing to 0 and Kiwami

Pros:
-The new characters are really good. I especially like Akiyama. He is funny with charisma.
-The way they each had stories that tied together and you got to experience different POVs was refreshing and interesting
-Still a great story overall
-The hostess mini game is enjoyable.

Cons:
-The combat is really really stale from 3 into this. Yes different characters have different styles but I hate hate hate how every single boss character dodges and blocks every. single. move. you do. it's not fun. i end up spamming buttons getting 1 punch in and having to cheese items and heat to win. It's not fun.
-The story gets too soap opery at times and the shock moments have become quite predictable.
-I'm tired of the hour long cutscenes. Sometimes I want to play and not have to sit through a movie. And I feel so drained afterwards it makes me have to take frequent breaks. I wish they would do smaller cutscenes.
-The random encounters are still and always will be annoying.

Being a 2010 game, I can forgive some of this, but the series is starting to feel a bit stale, even with the new characters. We'll see how 5 deals with this.

Still good, just not great.

Even though it’s one of the weaker Yakuza / Like a Dragon games in terms of story (though it improves quite a bit in gameplay compared to 3), it’s still very good—interesting, captivating, and exciting. The weakest entry in this series surpasses the vast majority of games that come out lately; it's incredible. Personally, I feel that the four stories connect very well, and each has its own hook. I didn't feel that having four short stories instead of one long one affected the development, honestly, but I understand that some people might see it that way. In my opinion, it’s a very remarkable, fun game with memorable moments.

I went into Yakuza 4 expecting not to like it based on what I've heard online about the story and characters, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Yakuza 4 was one of my favorite Yakuza games so far.

Everything gameplay and visual-wise is, while obviously still not on the level of 5, 0, or Kiwami, much improved from Yakuza 3. The constant blocking and general annoying things about Yakuza 3's combat were largely fixed with Yakuza 4, and I liked the combat for all 4 characters. Each one had a distinct style and they all worked well. Saejima's was a bit slow but the charge-up finishing attacks were cool. I loved Akiyama's kicks and Tanimura's parries, and Kiryu was Kiryu.

The story was not nearly as convoluted as it was made out to be. The rubber bullets twist that everybody online hates was fine in my eyes and did not damage Saejima's character at all. In fact, I thought Saejima's part was awesome bar the awful prison escape fights. Akiyama was super cool, as was expected. I wasn't a huge fan of Tanimura, but his part wasn't bad. Kiryu's involvement felt very unnecessary, like they threw it in because it wouldn't be a Yakuza game if Kiryu wasn't playable. I think it would have been fine if his only involvement was with Saejima on the beach.

The worst part of the story, aside from Yasuko's death scene (which was atrocious), was the antagonists. Unfortunately, aside from Arai, they were pretty weak in character. Saejima fighting Kido made sense, but it was such a mismatch that it was kind of stupid. Kiryu fighting Daigo didn't really make any sense. Munakata was a disappointing final villain, plus his fight sucked big time and would have been even worse without the Sacred Tree armor.

All that said, the finale was badass. 4 fights with 4 badass intros and 4 badass themes. No bullshit, just straight to the point with 4 straight boss fights.

All in all, I loved Yakuza 4. Good main story except for a few moments, good substories, the combat felt good. All in all, just a good Yakuza game. 8.6/10

At first, I wasn’t too sure about playing as completely new characters, but RGG has done a fantastic job creating them. Each has their own personality and storylines that are so interesting that you almost forget there ever was a Dragon of Dojima. They all have that air of being a total bad ass about them but each in their own unique way.

Coming from Yakuza 3, this game feels like a massive improvement. Just when I thought I knew Kamurocho like the back of my hand, this installment introduces new areas to explore with underground paths and rooftop sections. The main storylines with the new playable characters are engaging, and the final chapter and finale felt very satisfying. In true Yakuza form, the story does become a little convoluted, with a few weak plot points and twists thrown in that don't quite make sense.

Despite this, and without giving too much away, the final chapter is incredible. It’s an easy recommendation, and if you’ve gotten this far in the series, this one’s a no-brainer.

Definitely a step up from Yakuza 3. Didn’t think I’d enjoy playing as 4 different characters here, but it actually worked out well. All four characters had great stories and characteristics - Akiyama probably being my favorite. Loved how all four stories connected. Definitely one of the better stories so far. Once again this is a very silly game, but it was actually the first Yakuza game where I was able to finally understand/embrace the silliness of this series. I’m glad it finally clicked because it makes me like all these games even more. Gameplay wise I have no complaints, I liked that all characters had their own fight styles and upgrades and thus felt completely different from one another. One of the better games in the series, definitely recommend.

Definitely the worst Yakuza I've played so far.

Splitting the structure up into 4 sperate characters means that all of their stories feel rushed and incomplete. None of their sub stories really feel fleshed out either.

The characters themselves were mixed. The first one, Akiyama, was so bad I almost dropped the game. His whole seems to be that poverty is a moral failing, and as a morally superior rich guy that justified him meddling in people's lives. This isn't some flawed character who learns his lesson throughout the story- this is just straight up rich people propaganda and it's gross. He's also not particularly interesting to control. The way they deal with his secretary, Hana, is both misogynist and fat phobic.

Saejima is a lot better. The very instant the cutscene switches perspectives from Akiyama to Saejima the game instantly improves. As a slow, heavy character he's interesting to control. Honestly if they had a 50-50 split between him and Kiryu the game would be way better. My only complaint is that Saejima's entire time in Kamurocho he is hunted by police. Meaning the slow, muscly character who is great at brute force is made to engage with... Superficially implemented stealth mechanics. Another complaint is that his relationship with his step-sister kind of borders upon romance, but it doesn't quite get to that point.

Tanimura is really forgettable. His character is a generic honest cop fighting the corruption that killed his father, not really anything new or interesting there. His counter ability is neat, but other than that he fights like Akiyama (who is just a worse version of Kiryu).

His ability to speak a variety of languages probably would have been more impactful if not for my biggest complaint about a lot of Yakuza games: they choose not to dub. They dubbed Yakuza 1, then a bunch of gatekeeping weebs complained so hard that we didn't get another dub for decades. So instead of admiring the cinematography of the cutscenes I need to focus on reading what they're saying. It would have been really impactful if I had been listening in English through the first 3 acts and then suddenly they start talking in Tagalog, but alas that didn't happen.

The ambience and vibes are also just off. It feels more similar to GTA than the early Yakuza games. It doesn't have that cozy feel. The background noise is just white noise most of the time- it's very rare to pick out voices in the background of the city.

Also the story makes even less sense than usual. They have Daigo kind-of-sort-of be a bit villanous-ish? It feels like they just wanted an epic 4v4 battle at the end and grabbed any character they could. It doesn't work well.

I'm trying to play then all in order, and I suspect my favorite is going to be Like a Dragon for the turn-based combat. I really hope the rest of the games in-between are better than this.

I liked the story more than Yakuza 3. But I have to say there were a lot more stupid moments in this game, maybe because it’s the 4th I played in a row that I’m noticing them more. Dumb plot twists, people not taking guns away from bad guys, knowing when an important plot point individual is getting shot and silenced, etc. anyway with that aside I still love Yakuza 4. I love the 4 protagonists and how each of their stories and substories were very unique to them. I liked Akiyama’s the most because of how unique it was. It was slightly disorienting in the finale switching from each protagonist because of how different their fighting styles were though but I genuinely enjoyed playing as all 4.

The substories weren’t super memorable overall but there were a few very funny and outlandish moments as well as a couple serious and sad moments too. A fair amount of them were entertaining regardless anyway but still doesn’t reach sub story quality of Kiwami 2. I’m still loving playing through the series. Even at its lower points the Yakuza games are still very enjoyable

This has my favorite pacing of any Yakuza game. The introduction of additional playable characters is super cool and stops the gameplay from getting monotonous. I also like the way their stories varied in tone ultimately converging in the end with the showdown with each characters' respective antagonist atop the Millennium Tower. Akiyama, Sejima, and Tanimura are super compelling characters and their inclusion in the story made the Kiryu chapters at the end of the game feel like a suitable climax to the narrative; Kiryu's appearance in Kamurocho after years is like a force of nature whose purpose is to diffuse the power vacuum created in his absence by his presence alone.

Stupid but very in tone funny plot twists, epic showdowns, silly dialogue, melodramatic out of nowhere deaths, cringy but very loveable characters, this is Yakuza!

The best start in a yakuza game till now with some of my favorite scenes in the first 2 chapters, falls off in the second half, but doesn't get anywhere close to being bad as some claim.
The infamous twists are indeed very very dumb (rubber bullets rly bruh?), in any other series I would call bullshit and immediately break my suspension of disbelief, but Yakuza has established this tone in the previous 3 games so it gets a pass... barely
The 4 protagonists is a great concept executed in an equally great way, loved to see the 4 branches of the story slowly intertwine. Akiyama is a goofy, cringy, adorable boy and Saejima is Him. A big tough guy with a heart of gold with an amazing backstory leading my favorite scenes in the game. Kiryu is what we are used to and Tanimura well... is a shimmer in a sea of star characters
Eager to see what comes next in the series

After Yakuza 3 (mostly low quality side content and badly design battle system) made me question if yakuza games before Y0 were good at all - Yakuza 4 kicked that whole idea of my mind. Is it the best game in series? Absolutly not. BUT It's an great game.
Totally worth playing - revitalized my will to continue playing yakuza series without an longer break.
So far i would rate:
Y0 > YK2 > YK1 / Y4 >>>>> 3

really good game. when i first started i thought it gonna be my second favorite yakuza game, sadly didnt beated yakuza kiwiami 1 and 0 in the end. (only played 0-4)
the story is good and i love the idea of having 4 main charakters, i just think that the kiryu cahpters are a little short and i would like it more to switch back and fourth with the chakteres in the story.
i love the soundtrack of the game.
only real downside of the game is the difficulty of the game, i played it on normal and it was proably because we need to play with 4 diffrent charakters with diffrent playstlye but it was still a little too easy.
i will proably play that game someday again with a harder difficulty.

A really badly aged Yakuza entry controlling wise. Even worse then 3. Boss fights are a bit less awful but I gave up after Chapter 4 of Kiryu's story. The absolute best part is the story. It really catches you. It's like always about corruption, death, murder and betrayal. But the combat is hurting my hand too much so I gave up.

Update:
After beating Yakuza 8 I went back to try to finish this mess. And three hours later ... done. The story is still the best part of the game. Fighting is still like a chess play. But you can make it easier for yourself if you buy weapons. So please buy them. It makes this whole thing more endurable.

As usual, we get an interesting story with plenty of likable characters and ridiculous moments.

+ Now with 3 playable characters and more of Kamurocho to explore.

- 3 and 4 suffer from not having a proper remaster, the difference between some visuals (mostly NPCs) is jarring.

Another great entry in the series. The multi protagonist structure really builds out the breadth of the world. Looking forward to the next one!
