Nah this one is not it bro...Yakuza games have VERY good stories. But they usually start quite slow and take a while to get into things, which is usually compensated by the ridiculous, drama-filled, fun asf endings. This Yakuza though, has four different stories that tie into one another in the ending. What does this mean? It STARTS SLOW FOUR TIMES while still having one (actually batshit insane and awesome) ending. This made like 70% of the story boring as FUCK.
The minigames and side content were also fucking miserable most times (e.g. Saejima's hunting shenanigans), except for Kiryu's cab driving stuff. Because of this, this was the first Yakuza game where I literally refused to do ANY side content and just grinded the main story so I could be done and move on to 6. First Yakuza game where I told myself very early on that I would NOT complete this 100%.
And then... and then...
The Haruka Idol bullshit.
Why was this here? The gameplay wasn't fun (it could be if there were more than two songs in the game). Neither were the side quests. The story was mostly boring. It just felt completely off from the rest of the game. Even the ending itself was ruined by it...
Why was the last scene before the credits some cringey speech from Haruka about family and friends and the usual lovey-dovey things that are so bland and repetitive and then just running off in the middle of this supposed "dream" they were protecting this whole time?.
Some pros tho: Shinada was a pretty good character and a breath of fresh air; the usual fight scenes and feats of strength that feel straight out of a ridiculous anime; the plot twists; the gameplay is always fun.
If this was my first Yakuza it would not be over 30%.

This game took me a really really long time to beat, but I was pretty locked in the whole time. There's so much to go over that I almost don't feel like writing it all, so I might keep this short. Part 1 was a great introduction and it really shows how lonely things are for Kiryu since the end of 4, Part 2 definitely is the most flawed but I honestly still really liked it. The hunting was fun and doing stuff as Saejima is just cool to me. I also think Baba is a pretty alright character. The scene where you have to kidnap Kitakata and somehow no one sees you grab him in broad daylight is one of my favorite moments in the whole series, it's really funny. Part 3 was really interesting to me, and it's definitely when the story starts to pick up most, with the introduction of Ousaka Enterprises and characters like Katsuya and Kanai. The scene where Akiyama discovers Ogita in the construction site with his arm missing is really one of the most brutal scenes in the whole series. Now... Part 4. Everybody knows that Shinada is the peak of this game, and it's really easy to see why. His part feels so different from any other part in the series. They really make you feel dirt poor at the start, and it's funny how Takasugi is always taking your money. Shinada and Takasugi have such a great dynamic, and Takasugi especially is now one of my favorite characters in the entire series. Shinadas story as a whole is pretty sad, since all he wants is to be the one controlling his life, but it almost feels like everything around him has always been decided by yakuza in the shadows. The scene at the end where he looks off at Harukas performance from above and asks himself if he also looked that small from the audience is actually amazing. Such a great character. Now the game isn't perfect. I think Kurosawa wasn't a bad villain, but Aizawa being revealed as the final fight was kinda just meh for me. I mean they have you fight him before in the game and he never really gives much trouble, so having him be this big final boss just kind of didn't do it for me. But who knows, maybe I missed some big hidden meaning. In the end, I'll always love this series, and having any definitive ranking list is pretty impossible for me. Yakuza 5 was a wonderful experience and I wish to leave it at that.Updated 4 Weeks Ago

Way too long. Awful story. Frustrating mechanics. I was willing to forgive a lot in 3 and 4 because they had good characters and were paced okay, but 5 is way too slow and nonsensical to justify its length. The Haruka section was the best part. Saejima and Shinada could have been cut entirely. The boss rush at the end was terrible, and the twists were very stupid. I'll be glad to move on from this one.Updated 1 Month Ago

Pretty good game, but I felt like some of the plot, especially the Shinada one was not relevant. Finale boss was an ass-pull that would've been better if they had more screen time. Frankly, I'm tired of the engine that was in Y3-5. Hopefully 6 on-wards is better. 7.5/10Updated 3 Months Ago

Updated 5.5 Months Ago

i have many feelings for that game, one half of the game is gold the other half of it are boring things.the game overall is still good it was sadly just way too long and even with the length there wasnt enough fights in the main story, but hey....you atleast are forces to play 8-ball.....
Saejima- and here we have the reason why it took so long for me to beat the actually game, his story part was boring and didnt enjoyed much of it. i really thought of just skipping that part many times while playing it, i was stuck there for 6 months because i just didnt had the motivation for the prison,forest,8-ball his playsytle and and and. but atleast you can fight a bear.
haruka/akiyama- Peak fiction. haruka battle system was some fresh air of the game (even if there wasnt alot of fight in the story anyway) and make still fun. i like the idea of her having a own (or atleast a half own) story too.
akiyama is likeble like always

I have to say that, out of the PS3 trilogy (3-4-5), Yakuza 5 is without a doubt the best. It still carries over some issues from that console generation, which makes the experience a bit heavy at times.Let me start with the main negative aspects:
There are way too many avoidable fights, and they last longer than they should. Walking 100 meters through the city and getting into three battles really makes the experience less enjoyable. The combat system has definitely improved compared to Yakuza 3 and 4, except when it comes to Shinada — his fighting style is honestly awful. I get it: he’s just a civilian who plays baseball, but gameplay-wise, it's really clunky.
There are also some animations and technical aspects that are questionable, but I won’t criticize them too harshly, since it’s a PS3 title and I understand that, for its time, it wasn’t that bad.
I’ve always believed in the saying: “Jack of all trades, master of none.” The game is too long and tries to do too much, leaving a lot of things feeling incomplete. Personally, I think it would’ve been better to have two cities fully detailed, polished, and filled with fun activities, rather than five. But I understand they went that route for lore reasons, and I respect it.
Now, onto the positives:
If you’re a fan of Yakuza, this is probably one of the most carefully crafted stories in the series, and you can really tell a lot of love was put into it. It has the longest storyline in the saga (at least from 0 to 5, which are the ones I’ve played so far) and some plot points are genuinely interesting.
In my opinion, it also features the best minigame in the whole series — right after Karaoke and Yakuza 0’s Disco: Kiryu’s Taxi side content. Both the passenger-driving and the street races were super fun.
The soundtrack is easily one of the best in the franchise. Adding music to dialogues gives the scenes so much more life.
Now that I’ve covered the gameplay and technical aspects, I’ll share my thoughts on the story, which is, after all, the most important part.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story and I appreciate how much it dared to take big risks. The idea of having five separate stories is interesting, but it’s impossible to ignore how some of them feel extremely forced, while others connect quite naturally. The most obvious example is Shinada’s storyline — it feels totally forced. It’s as if the director wanted to write a story about Yakuza corruption in professional baseball and squeezed it in however he could. It doesn’t feel natural at all, even if the storyline itself is decent.
There are also moments that just don’t sit right, especially considering how long the game is. Once again: “Jack of all trades, master of none.” The clearest example of this, for me, is Park’s death. I was really enjoying her connection with Haruka, and suddenly, one day, she’s dead — gone — and it’s as if she never existed. Haruka doesn’t get a chance to say goodbye, feels sad for five minutes, and then moves on. There’s not even a mention of her relationship with Majima. He never even finds out, and it’s treated as if it was irrelevant. That part left me genuinely heartbroken, and even today I can’t get over it. In my opinion, it’s one of the worst lore-related moments in the entire series.
As for the ending: if it weren’t for the fact that Yakuza 6 exists, it would’ve been terrible. Everything was beautiful — Haruka’s speech even made me cry — but then she runs off, finds Kiryu and… BAM, “THE END.” Completely abrupt. It was awful. I haven’t felt that level of disappointment since Knights of the Old Republic II. I can only imagine how unsatisfied people must’ve felt when the game originally came out. As of writing this, I’ve put 10 hours into Yakuza 6 and I have to admit it fixes some of that, but judging Yakuza 5 as a standalone product, it’s definitely not okay — especially considering how perfect it was up to that point.
The risk I mentioned earlier that I absolutely loved was Haruka’s section. Including a full rhythm-game chapter in the middle of a Yakuza game was a brilliant choice. And I call it a risk because I’m sure a lot of people, expecting Japanese mafia action, dropped the game right there. For me, though, it was the most enjoyable story segment, along with Kiryu’s. The bond with Akiyama felt really genuine and heartwarming.
As for Saejima’s story: it was fine, nothing more. The gameplay design really got in the way of what could’ve been a much better prison narrative. I doubt anyone will remember it too fondly. On the other hand, I really liked Baba’s character arc, especially the moment when he’s faced with the decision to target Haruka. One of the game’s strongest moments, in my opinion.
All in all, I think this is the best story since Yakuza 0, but these negative points really need to be addressed, because they stain what could’ve been an incredible narrative.
In summary: a great entry in the saga, one of the best, despite it.

I have played 0-5 of the Yakuza games and I don’t mind the older ones as they are just as enjoyable as the new ones and for Yakuza 5 it had some of my favourite and least favourite moments.I adore Yakuza 5, I really do and it 100% could’ve been my top Yakuza game if it didn’t start to dwindle and dawdle so much near the end. After Shinada’s story, I just wanted the game to be over, they have 5 chapters in the ‘final chapter’ and it starts to feel more like a musuo game with how many goons you have to fight. The story wasn’t my favourite, they have some fantastic characters, one of my new favourite Yakuza characters (Takasugi!!! shinada started out as a favourite but became a big generic at the end for me personally)) but the story started to fall apart and felt all over the place at times. I was following for a bit, the moment I was started to feel negative towards it was when the masked man revealed to be Daigo (in Shinadas story, WHICH I GUESSED STRAIGHT AWAY, I can tell Daigo from a mile away).
Because of the length of the game and the fact they wanted to have to have (YAKUZA) 5 playable characters, the story felt stretched out so much and it really didn’t need to be, so that’s my main gripe with the game, I don’t mind putting a lot into a game but with the story being so long and drawn out like that I started to feel burnt out.
Despite all this, the SUBSTORIES!!! Specifically the Job ones for Kiryu, Saejima and Haruka!! Some of the funnest things i’ve done in Yakuza I loved them so much!!! I fully completed every Saejima and Haruka quest and I would do it again in a heart beat, I genuinely loved loved LOVED them parts of the game, I didn’t do the story for a long time because I was too busy doing all the side stuff which was great. Although Tatsuya, the chef, let it down, the fact you have to complete this quest in every persons story to get the final substory from him pissed me off I just binned it off after the first two characters.
Overall, Yakuza 5 was a long winded story with some fantastic parts within, I’d recommend it if you enjoy mainly the side stuff in Yakuza because the taxi, hunting and idol missions were so fun.

Well then...after literally just having finished the game and watched the credits and ending credits scene..i'm beyond frustrated with this series at this point. I love the story telling and the setting and the presentation of the series, and this is one of the only series that has ever made me cry..but this one really really dropped the ball..I think this is probably my least favorite game in the series so far.
I think it's better to break this game into each characters parts for the sake of review:
Kiryu's part: 6/10
Saejima's part: 2/10
Haruka's part: 8/10
Akiyama's part: 8/10
Shinada's part: 4/10
Kiryu's part starts off so confusing and doesn't give you any information about his situation for a good 2 hours of gameplay and you're just sitting here like why is this happening did I miss something between 4 and 5 wtf is going on. The unfolding of what is going on is fine enough but it just overall is very mediocre. The way his storyline ends in this game is maddening. How many freaking times do we have to have a cliffhanger of Kiryu allegedly dying. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME COME UP WITH SOMETHING NEW
Saejima's part feels 100% unneeded. I have 0 attachment to him and i DEFINITELY don't care about Baba at all. Baba's storyline makes 0 sense and Saejima's doesn't either. He goes from caring about Majima cause he's his "brother" to not caring about him because he's "weak" to caring about to caring about him again back and forth. Make up your mind! Plus the entire prison section was just exactly what we already did in 4 and the hunting section felt like a completely different and unneeded game that I hated being forced into. It was such a life-draining boring slog of a part to the point I had to take a month break to get back to it.
Haruka & Akiyama's parts were the only redeeming sections of the game in my opinion. Akiyama is just a great character with a great personality and he's so fun to see in the cutscenes, and they made his fighting style even funner than the 4th one in this game. The biggest crime is not giving him an entire section just to himself. I dont know why they mixed it with Haruka. As for Haruka, I actually really enjoyed her story and being able to play as her, as well as the rhythm game aspect to her section. It felt really fresh and it actually tied into the story and made sense, unlike the hunting crap with Saejima. However, the way it resolves is infuriating. you mean to tell me that Kiryu, Saejma, Akiyama, and Shinada put their lives on the line for her so that she can live her dream, and then she just fucking quits on stage all the while outing Kiryu on national television in front of the whole country? How fucking stupid! I get the whole message of family and all, but Kiryu says in scenes before this he let himself be miserable so Haruka can live her dream. This makes her come across so bad to me!
Shinada has a fun personality and his section feels like a mildly interesting side game with the baseball development and all, but he feels so out of place in the grand scheme of things and it just didn't make a lot of sense why we even need him or why he should do anything related to the Yakuza at all. Even once it's explained how he fits in I was just like "so? why is he here?" plus the way his story ends again is stupid Baba literally decided to listen to Saejima and be a good person and not shoot Haruka, which doesn't make sense anyway because he told Saejima he was done with working for his boss basically when they met and fought, and then he walks away but Shinada makes him fight because he's in 24/7 sad boy hours, and that leads to Baba almost offing himself for no reason and then magically all the prison guys happen to show up with the lamest excuse of why they are out of prison to save the day, when the day shouldn't have even needed to be saved at all because Baba was literally leaving the fucking building. what??
And then all of the same problems from 3 and 4 continue in this game:
-The combat is still awful. It's impossible to fight anyone because all they do is block everything or interupt your combos, so you are left to cheese it with heat moves or weapons or just exploiting the bad and predictable AI.
-The random encounters are the worst in this game. You have random encounters with pink names over their heads so at least you know they are an encounter and can avoid them, but there are also hidden encounters too! Where if you bump into certain people they fight you. I was trying to show my friend a city in the game and I couldn't walk down 1 street without getting into 5 random fights. Absolutely ridiculous.
-The crowd generation is really bad in this game. It always spawns 6 or 7 people in front of you and they are always blocking the entire road or sidewalk and it is so hard to get by them.
-It's WAY too long for no reason.
I am ready for 6. This was so disappointing.

A solid game but is down there with Yakuza 3 & 4 as my least favorite Yakuza games. I love the introduction to the side stories mechanic as it’s iconic to Yakuza. I liked the idol side story in particular as it was just very different and a fun change of pace from the rest of the game. The substories could be occasionally funny and interesting but most weren’t which is how I felt about 3 & 4’s as well. The main story was a little over the place at times but did tie in and wrap up relatively nicely. It just got a little too convoluted at times and twisted and turned a few too many times too. Overall the story wasn’t bad but it could occasionally be juvenile with the focus on dreams and wasn’t nearly as compelling as it could have been. I did appreciate the final few minutes though and there were some shocking and strong moments throughout.
I also loved the addition of some of the unique mini games like Comedy Team and Winter Combat and it was crazy just how big this game could be. Truly a crazy amount of effort went into it and I can appreciate why this game is so loved as it seemed to really push the Yakuza series in the direction that makes it so iconic today that 0 then subsequently built upon. Still a good game but one of my least favorite Yakuza games so far

Another solid entry in the Yakuza franchise - this one with the big theme of "dream" and working to achieve one's own dream in life. This one was JAMMED full of content - there's so much here it can at times be overwhelming. 0 had a similar level of content to this - 5 was definitely one of the longest and biggest in the series for that reason, along with now playing as 5 different characters this time around, with their own unique side content and missions. While the story was really good and kept me into it the whole time it honestly fell apart by the end for me a bit - there are previous titles in the series that do this area way better. I'd say it's definitely worth the overall ride, despite some shortcomings - it's not the best Yakuza game in the series, but it's a far stretch from being the worst either.

Loved Kiryu’s chapter - the first. Played all his mini-games (taxi and noodles were both a blast), did some side quests in this one.Saeijima’s was okay, but uneven. Prison section and some of mountains was a pain. Story was interesting though.
Haruka & Akiyama’s was mostly enjoyable. Unique gameplay/perspective with Haruka and the dance/rhythm stuff; Akiyama’s always such a charismatic character and fun to fight with.
Shinada’s arc - the 4th chapter was my least favorite. Felt way out of left field (pun intended) and while there were aspects of his character I kind of liked, I didn’t enjoy his combat style or story too much.
5th and final arc was back to being more enjoyable, though some twists and reveals in the story felt awkward and fell flat for me. Moments with main protag’s teaming up (reminiscent of Yakuza 4) were cool though. Some fun fights, a few engaging cinematics, but again… story fell flat and the ending was… there?
Overall, aside from doing the side quests heavy in the first arc and a few in the third, I mostly just played straight through the story. This felt the weakest to me in the whole series due to it being so large in scope, disjointed compared to other titles, and awkward pacing. Still, the moments at the beginning and end with Kiryu were still a blast and Akiyama’s involvement was very cool. Getting to play as Haruka was a fun novelty, too. Graphics, voice acting, sound, and most of the gameplay were all still right up there in terms of series standard quality. Good game. Good Yakuza entry, but far from my favorite in the series.

longest yakuza game yet. felt like it was way to long for its own good. lots of filler during the main story was a bore at times. the combat was one of the best in the series yet having 4 different characters with 4 different move sets, Kiryus combat especially I felt was one of his best iterations. combat was very easy 0 challenge which was a bit of a letdown at times. pushed through just the main story not doing much of the side quests. ranking for the parts personally best to worst shinada > kiryu > finale > akiyama/haruka > saejima . its really a 50/50 between the community, you either love it or hate it I personally found it to be alright. Good but not great game. Gameplay and upgrades were very similar to Yakuza 4, which is a positive. I appreciated that some of the skills and heat actions carried over for characters from previous games so that you didn’t have to start completely from scratch. Once again, I liked that all characters felt completely different from each other. Haruka being a playable character was a nice curveball. The game probably didn’t have to be this long, but I did mostly enjoy the story. Probably one of the sillier games in the series. I would say this is the most complex story so far, but that’s necessarily a good or bad thing. With that said, I thought some of the finale was sloppy and even a little disappointing. Spoilers:Shinada didn’t really have a true rival to fight in the end, so they just stuck him with Baba. I thought Harukas last speech was kind of cringe on the stage. And then her randomly finding Kiryu in the street after was a little too much of a stretch. For how important majima was to the story they didn’t really flesh his part out much. In fact he barely has any lines and I just don’t think his part was explained enough. Imo Aizawa didn’t make sense as the final boss, even for yakuza series logic. Especially don’t understand his visit to Purgatory. But hey, the fight itself was pretty cool at least. While I didn’t love the finale, I definitely did enjoy the story to that point. I thought the substories were cool for all the characters too (racing, batting cage, hunting, dancing). I definitely liked that the side missions were nice and short. The game was cool but I’m excited to have it finished and ready for 6.

Both the greatest strength and biggest weakness of this entry is its epic scope. The ending is *amazing* and almost makes up for any shortcomings, but it can be a bit of a slog to get there with the story effectively starting over four times before it gets there. I'm still loving the Yakuza series for the new experiences each one brings, but this one lands somewhere in the middle for me personallyUpdated 1 Year Ago

"Take Yakuza 4 and make it BIGGER and Better" Someone said that and we got Yakuza 5.
In terms of "bigger" we got a lot - Y5 is the longest game in Yakuza frenchise that i played so far what is quite an archivment looking at how long i spent in Y0.
What is most important tho is that quality of those hours is great, wouldn't say it's Y0 level BUT it's 2nd/3rd best Yakuza game i played so far. (close to YK2 but still not close to Y0)
In terms of quality - in my opinion it's better than Y4 but might be overwhelming for some people, as i said it clearly isn't the best yakuza game BUT it dosn't need to! it's great! I was really happy to play it the whole time (maybe expect like half of part 2).
Where Yakuza 0 is almost an mastepiece despite it flows, where YK1 suffers due to outdated original, where YK2 is great but a bit soul-less, Where Y3 is a disaster, Where Y4 is an hope of recovery, Y5 is that recovery.
after Yakuza 5 i'm looking forward to Yakuza 6.

Jack of all trade, master of none. But oh boy is it a good jack. The characters are nearly all likable (unlike other RGG titles), and there is a stupid amount of varied minigames. The main downsides are the very high encounter rate, and how plot-holey the story is.

Hoo boy. Where do I even begin?Yakuza 5 is easily the best Yakuza entry in the franchise. Whilst Saejima's part can be very long and Akiyama's part dragged down Haruka's part, that doesn't stop it from having the best Kiryu story, the best protagonist (Shinada), the best finale and final boss in the series. From the game's exploration of longtime themes to the theme it introduces and explores to all of the wonderful licensed music in this game, it's truly spectacular and is definitely my favourite game of all time.
