Honestly more fun than I expected. Throwback to 90s JRPGs ... I used to think it was refreshing to have a game be pretty grim and realistic about morality but at this point I guess I've come full circle, and it was sort of comforting to have my characters preach at me about doing the right thing, in that very specific JRPG way that simply refuses to let its characters be flawed.Eight characters with four chapters each means you're getting pretty sick of the grind and the story formula by the time you wrap up the last one, but I was impressed that their respective storylines managed to each be pretty engaging in different ways, and portray the characters as truly individual people with individual thoughts and concerns. Only one character I couldn't stand which is a fairly rare ratio.
Random encounters vision-blurring in their repetition. Battle very, very tiresome for a solid half of the game; I must have scrolled down to Sweeping Cleave hundreds and hundreds of times. The boss fights each had some new twist to throw at you, though, and the final battle really managed to mix up the formula and be interesting again right when the game needed it; had to respect that.
Pick Castti as your main, for real; the little nurse hat is a tactical disguise. This woman can do insane damage and no one will ever see it coming. I giggled through the whole game at the fact the apothecary fights with a battle axe.
The secret seventh element, the One True Magic, being revealed as Shadow Magic just about made me crazy, though. Representative of the darknesses within people's hearts, they explain. Almost always weak to light. That's just dark magic. Dark 2.0. Did they forget the game already had dark magic?

Great improvement upon the first game. Most of the gripes people had were address and fleshed out a bit more. Characters now how much more dialogue between themselves. At the end of the day, its still mostly 8 individual stories with a small story together to finish the game.Graphics were good and a bit improved from the first. Most notably the lighting. I love the HD-2D style.
Voice acting was good, nothing spectacular, but good none the less.
Music was great, other than Partitio's music which I absolutely HATED.
Stories were fantastic. Every character had a unique and interesting story. Throne,
Combat was more of the same from the first game, but improved a bit. Some boss battles were a bit difficult. My only gripe is that random battles end up being a bit slow until towards the end of the game when you can one or two shot the screen. I wish they would implement an all-out, Persona style, mechanic after breaking all the enemies to help speed up grinding.
Grinding was definitely NOT fun. Inactive party members do NOT get experience and if you want to beat the main story's final boss, it is MANDATORY to level up ALL characters. This is BY FAR my biggest gripe with the game. The game was probably 15-20 hours longer just because I had to swap out party members and grind. If they don't update the next entry with more QoL, especially as it pertains to grinding, I will likely sit it out.
Great game overall and I definitely recommend it.

Review – Octopath Traveler IIOverall Score: 75.17/100
Octopath Traveler II delivers a solid follow-up to its predecessor, building on the signature HD-2D art style and turn-based battle system. While it does not revolutionize the formula, it refines it in meaningful ways, providing a balanced but not groundbreaking RPG experience.
Graphics – 73/100
The HD-2D visuals are still charming, combining pixel art with modern lighting effects. However, compared to Triangle Strategy or Live A Live (HD-2D remake), the graphical impact feels less fresh this time around. It’s beautiful but no longer surprising.
Audio – 75/100
The soundtrack is consistently strong, with memorable battle themes and ambient tracks. Voice acting is decent but not outstanding, placing it slightly behind Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which delivers stronger performances.
Puzzle/Quest Design – 73/100
Side quests and puzzles are functional but uninspired. Many quests follow a simple “find X, deliver Y” structure, which pales when compared to the more intricate quest chains in Final Fantasy Tactics or even the branching paths of Persona 5.
Combat – 77/100
The break-and-boost system remains highly engaging, offering strategic depth. It stands out above Bravely Default II in terms of pacing and variety, though it can become repetitive in longer play sessions.
Boss Battles – 77/100
Boss fights are well-designed, testing party composition and resource management. They provide a challenge comparable to Unicorn Overlord, though with less spectacle.
Plot – 73/100
Each character has their own storyline, but the lack of strong interconnections makes the narrative feel fragmented. Games like Persona 5 or Fire Emblem: Engage deliver a more cohesive overarching story.
Characters – 73/100
The cast is varied, yet character interactions remain limited. Compared to the relationship depth in Fire Emblem or Persona, Octopath II feels somewhat distant.
Pacing – 75/100
Progression is steady but can feel formulaic due to the isolated stories. Still, it avoids the grind-heavy pacing issues found in Bravely Default II.
Storytelling – 74/100
The narrative structure is ambitious but inconsistent. Some character arcs are emotional and memorable, while others fall flat. The segmented format works for replayability but weakens emotional impact.
Mechanics – 77/100
Job systems and secondary classes offer strong customization, comparable to Final Fantasy Tactics but less intricate than Unicorn Overlord’s layered unit management.
World Design/Theme – 75/100
The world is expansive and beautiful, with diverse regions. However, exploration feels less rewarding compared to the more interconnected worlds of Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
Performance/Readiness – 80/100
The game runs smoothly on all platforms, with very few technical issues. This stability gives it an edge over more demanding RPGs that often suffer from frame drops or bugs at launch.
Final Thoughts
Octopath Traveler II is a well-crafted but safe sequel, with its strongest points being combat mechanics and technical stability. While it doesn’t surpass the narrative depth or character bonding of Fire Emblem or Persona, it remains one of the better choices for fans of classic-style JRPGs who value strategy and customization.
Overall: 75.17/100 – A strong but not groundbreaking RPG.

Graphics – 75 | Audio – 75 | Puzzle/Quest Design – 73 | Combat – 75 | Boss – 75 | Plot – 70 | Character – 73 | Pacing – 68 | Storytelling – 73 | Mechanics – 75 | World Design/Theme – 75 | Performance/Readiness – 80 | Overall – 74Octopath Traveler II refines the signature HD-2D aesthetic of its predecessor with gorgeous sprite work and vibrant lighting, while the orchestral soundtrack and sound design create an immersive atmosphere throughout. Combat is as sharp as ever, with strategic depth that rewards planning, and the world is filled with charming towns and challenging boss encounters.
Yet, its biggest drawback lies in pacing. The game demands that players guide all eight protagonists to their individual endings, which can become tiring over time. Unlike many classic RPGs that present a single overarching narrative supplemented by optional companion stories, this structure forces a uniform grind and reduces the sense of narrative momentum or personal choice.
While each character’s tale has moments of charm, the fragmented storytelling and sheer volume of required content dilute the emotional payoff. The game’s craftsmanship is evident, but its structure often works against its own strengths.
Verdict: A beautifully built RPG with compelling mechanics and presentation, but its insistence on equally spotlighting eight characters makes the journey feel more like an obligation than an adventure.

This is one of the best game I’ve played this year (Rank 2).I played on and off for 16 months. Finally I’ve beaten the game excluding extra battles that recently just added. I heard that it’s need level grinding and i’m too lazy. 😂. In the future I might come back to try though. That’s why I won’t sell the game yet.
spoiler alert from here on:
What I liked
+ Fighting mechanisms are fun and engaging. Break systems with weaknesses and different ability in each character make fighting fun. It’s like you can win with your strategy, your way. Many bosses are tough and need a lot of trial and error.
+ Stories can be unexpectedly good. I love Hikari’s story the most. Second would be Osvald. Next is Throne, Castti and Temenos. The final boss and secret boss story are amazing. I love grinding and collecting gears to prepare to last boss. I didn’t know it would connect everyone together with a plot twist of many protagonists. Epilogue is epic indeed.
+ World are beautiful and engaging with path actions. Secret dungeons are interesting and fun to explore.
+ Sound tracks are great. Normally I turn sound off for other games but not this game.
What I don’t liked
- Random encounters are too much and annoying. I would prefer seeing actual monster and I can go to interact or run away.
- I lost interest from time to time as some stories are not interesting. I feel like Agnea, Ochette and Partitio stories are meh. That’s why it took me 16 months to complete when I reach these stories, I felt like chore to finish them.
- Stories are cut into pieces and go in random order as there are 8, I forgot the details. But after awhile I figured out that I finish first 4 and next 4 and the game became engaging and interesting again.
- I admitted I almost sold the game half way because it’s too predictable with go to town, talk to NPCs, find dungeon, kill boss. However, few better stories gave me twist and I stayed. Gladly I did stay.
Overall I really love this game, even though there are some annoying or boring parts along the way but the last 30 hours until ending was the best!
*EDITED* I have come back to beat extra battles!!! It was the highlight of the game. Super challenging, a lot of planning and tons of fun. Very stressful as well lol. One wrong move means death. I need to go grind both levels, gears and materials before came back to beat the battles. There are many ways to win. I love the customization and unique strategy.

Octopath Traveler 2 takes everything that was great about its predecessor and delivers an even more refined game. The HD-2D graphical style has been a perfect fit for many RPGs (including remakes) for the Switch, but Team Asano has truly outdone themselves this time, with beautiful landscapes and vibrant locations. Most of the characters' stories involve betrayal and greed, occasionally touching on other sensitive topics more directly, with my favorites being Oswald and Temenos.
A franchise that has rightfully earned its place among the top JRPGs, this is a must-play for lovers of the genre.

Octopath Traveler II is a game that I've been playing for a long time now. I started it back in February 2024 and have been playing it on and off for the past year and a half. The game is very conducive to pick up and play sessions over a long period of time, which is how I enjoyed playing the game. The story consists of an anthology style of storytelling through several chapters, then having all the characters come together to defeat the big final boss in the end. Playing through these chapters makes it so that each play session, you are getting some kind of meaningful story progress done, which I appreciated. I was drawn to this game because of its very fun and unique turn-based gameplay, amazing HD2D pixel graphics and character art, and top notch music. The game excels in all of these categories, and then some. Team Asano is very talented and have almost perfected making games in this style. With the gameplay, there are many engaging mechanics, such as the boost meter, latent power gauge, and the many different jobs. There is a lot of room for experimentation and putting together different builds that gives the game a ton of replay value and depth. I enjoyed all the different protagonists that I got to know, and for the most part, every story is engaging and fun. Octopath II definitely has more modern game mechanics, but since it's kind of emulating more retro rpgs, there are some more antiquated mechanics that I didn't love and eventually got on my nerves after a while. Random encounters are not fun, and you'll run into way too many of them. Plus, the normal battles barely give you any exp, so they feel worthless half the time. And when it comes to fighting mini bosses and chapter bosses, some have ridiculous and unfair mechanics that just toss strategy and planning out the window. For the most part, the side quests were pretty good and really helped to expand the lore of the world. Going around the towns and finding out info about how all the people and places are connected was one of my favorite parts of the game. All of the stories and lore came together in a cool way that paid off all of my exploration and side questing. This game is well worth its price and I would recommend it to any rpg fan. I'm just relieved to be done with the game after playing it for so long.Updated 2 Months Ago

My biggest issue with this game is that it really lacks focus. In isolation, I think the stories and characters are pretty great, but being told simultaneously felt so jarring and reduced a lot potential with each story. Because each character has so few chapters, their stories feel half baked. Another aspect that didn't feel cohesive was the world building. The towns and cities feel so small that it makes little sense on how so much could happen there. Some towns absolutely lost all of its identity because it had to cater to multiple party members passing through there at one point. Lastly, I find that the party really didn't feel like a party. Each story was told as if the character was alone and the party banter, crossed path chapters, and the end game content didn't make up for how isolated each character felt. The overall combat and exploration was the main thing that kept me invested. I really like the combat mechanics and there's quite a lot to collect, discover, and bosses to fight around the map. But aside from that, many of the other core aspects of the game were just disappointing.

Tough to review this one.**The Upsides**
Great soundtrack. Great animations. Good combat system. Decent voice acting (did jp voices).
**The Downsides**
Poor writing with forgettable stories with paper-thin 'bad guys', which generally consists of 'I want power with no explanation!'. The dialogue can be a slog to get through. It feels like they hired the same writers who did 'Triangle Strategy', which had some of the worst dialogue I've seen in a game in a long time. The characters and stories are filled with tropes, and there is filler in the guise of connecting the stories. In reality, all the stories are separate and bear no connection to each other.
Game is on the easier side, especially as you get further into it as enemy difficulty doesn't scale, and you'll reach a point where you're trying to finish the stories with absolutely no challenge.
A lot of money is irrelevant because it's so easy to obtain.
The majority of skills are irrelevant because they are simply not useful in comparison to better options.
All-in-all, the game was okay, but definitely felt like a slog at times; especially as you got more into it.

Epic, heartfelt and triumphant, Octopath Traveler II is one of the greatest games I've ever played. It has all of the elements that made the first game, and JRPGs in general, great, and improves upon them and polishes them to reach a luster that few pieces of entertainment ever manage. The combat, leveling and job mechanics are as engrossing as ever, but the storytelling marks a huge jump up from the previous installment. Each of the eight characters is deep, compelling and memorable, and while some twists are telegraphed, others had me picking my jaw up off the floor. Above all, the quality of this game's soundtrack is unparalleled; Yasunori Nishiki was already held is great esteem following his previous work on the series, but Octopath Traveler II's soundtrack may be the very best I've ever heard. I sunk more than 115 hours into Octopath Traveler II and other than a hang-up at the very end fighting the hidden superboss, every minute was of impressively consistent quality. If you have even a passing interest in JRPGs, I implore you to play this game. It is, put succinctly, one of the greatest of all time.Updated 6 Months Ago

I came into OT2 with high expections based on many reviews. Now that i have finished it, i do understand the hype and the nostalgic appeal but did not find a great fit for my personnal taste.Gaphically speaking, you gett what you expect. I good looking throwback RPG that used some of the modern technology well. I was a bit disapointed by the regular foes design that were often recycled and highly pixelated. When you see how good most of the bosses look, a better job could surely has been done.
Voice acting is decent is music is mostly good. It does gives some depth to the characters. Most of the tunes are really catchy and give a very well balanced ambiance depending on where you are and what you are doing.
Battle system is really interesting and very tactical when you get to the bosses. I did like the job system and felt like it did gives me enough customization to the teams. I did get repetitive at some point and i would have liked more flexibility of changing the team during combat. Especially with the fact that in the later game it is made easier and that FINALLY AT THE FINAL BOSS, you can switch during the combat. That option would have made the game way more interesting.
My biggest disapointement come from the story. Of course, i knew that it was gonna be 8 different story...but i felt like i was playing 8 side-quest branches without a real purpose between them all. The quality of these stories goes from decent to uninteresting. There is some interactions between the main characters, but they don't add much to the story. When everything come together in the last chapters, you feel what the game could have been. But it did not hit the spot from me.
Overall, if you want your nostalgic doses of 90's RPG, Octopat Travellers 2 is doing a good job at it. But if you are looking for something new, you might be left with wanting more.

This was a great game. I really enjoyed the stories and characters in this game. The combat was super fun and I really liked the endgame content (except the secret boss). The soundtrack was amazing and I would listen to it on its own! The secret boss felt too gimmicky and way too difficult compared to the rest of the content. With most games this length, I think it would have been better if it was ~10hrs shorter. By the time I finished all the character stories I was kinda done and skipped through the dialog for the crossed-paths and epilogue.Pros:
- Combat (fun and unique)
- Visuals / Design (HD-2D in some of these environments is stunning)
- Music! (Some of the best boss fight music ever)
- Locations / Vistas (Very nice varied biomes)
- Fun Mechanics (capture monsters [including bosses], learned skills, recruitable followers [including bosses], etc.)
- Really good fights and interesting boss mechanics
- Good voice acting
Cons:
- Too long (could have been ~10hrs shorter)
- Superboss was too hard (would have rather had some interesting mechanics rather than the boss 1-shotting you if you aren't overpowered)
- Frequent crashes on SteamOS
- Random encounters when retracing lower level areas

Through most all chapter 1’s, most chapter 2’s: I don’t understand how people say the story is so much better than OT1 when it’s basically the same structure and stories including the same problems. It does have improvements over 1 but the problems are so much worse the second time over.Complete: after a rough start it absolutely comes together. It is better than the first but takes a long time to get there. Needed a stronger start to grab me earlier.

Octopath Traveler II improves on everything that did the first game good. Gameplay is better balanced, two path actions give you more options, and extra classes are more interesting to both acquire and use. Crossed paths make the group fell like an actual party, travelers' stories have an actual theme, that logically builds up to the epic finale. The antagonists are positively nightmarish and do not pull any punches - a welcome break from "well-intentioned extremists", common nowadays. That's how you do a sequel! 9/10.Updated 10.5 Months Ago

Octopath Traveler 2 seamlessly weaves together stunning HD-2D visuals, an enchanting soundtrack, and a cast of eight captivating characters. As you step into their world, you’ll discover a heartwarming adventure that will resonate deeply with JRPG fans.Feast for the eyes: The intricate pixel art, lush landscapes, and character animations create a whimsical atmosphere.
Musical magic: Each character boasts a unique theme music that mirrors their personality. These melodies hit all the right notes when it comes to setting the mood for each of their stories.
Charming characters: It might seem initially like these characters are plain old RPG trope-types, but their motivations and the depth in some of their stories surprised me. Some carry darkness, while others radiate hope. Throne, Temenos, and Castti’s darker narratives were definitely my jam, but Osvald’s journey grew more compelling as I progressed. There’s also the “Crossed Paths” quests and the satisfying epilogue chapter that beautifully intertwine their stories.
Strategic gameplay: The robust turn-based combat system encourages tactical thinking. Targeting enemy weaknesses and timing attacks strategically for maximum damage kept things fun and engaging. The flexibility to interchange secondary jobs also adds a lot of gameplay depth and customisation. And don’t even get me started on how much fun it was to use everyone’s different path actions (looking at you ‘steal’)!
Exploring this meticulously crafted world gave me a sense that I just experienced a masterpiece emotional odyssey. Whether you’re a seasoned JRPG enthusiast or a newcomer, this sequel promises pure joy—an experience full of warmth that lingers long after you put down the controller. Prepare for an unforgettable journey!

This is a game that I had no interest in when it was first announced and for several months after its release, but after hearing positive reviews from trusted sources I decided to give it a go. I was hooked almost immediately after starting it, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience from start to finish. Not only that, but as I've thought back on it since finishing it, the more I'm appreciating it. The art is beautiful, the voice acting is well done, the music is FANTASTIC, and the combat got better and better as the game went on. I've heard some people who had problems with the story, but I really enjoyed it. Sure, there were some parts where the writing was a bit weak, but each character's overall arc was so well done and really pulled you in and made you care about them. There were admittedly a few moments when the game started to wane on me, which you may come to expect of such a long game, but they were far apart and fleeting. And that became the case more and more as I became more comfortable with the combat. About halfway through I realized a better strategy for combat, and that's when it absolutely took off for me and added multiple layers of strategy. By the time I got to the true ending/final boss, I had to pull out all of the stops to beat it. It was a very difficult boss, and finally pulling it off after multiple failed attempts was incredibly satisfying.
One other part that I really appreciated was that there was practically no level grinding at any point in the game. I did have to do some careful planning to ensure that was the case, like saving treks to certain towns for specific travelers, but I was able to finish the entire main stories without any unnecesary level grinding. This was also with minimal side content done. I would highly recommend this to anyone, especially RPG fans. And once again, that sountrack was just amazing!

I have played about 10 JRPGs and generally haven’t been a fan of the genre. This is my favorite JRPG I’ve played. I wouldn’t say the story was excellent but there were some excellent moments in each of the path’s main stories. I loved Throne’s and Hikari’s in particular but all had some great moments and dialogue. The combat for me was probably the best part and I don’t really care for combat much in games. Even though I googled boss weaknesses and got some combat tips from guides occasionally it was still a pretty challenging and rewarding combat system for me especially during some real rough boss fights.
I hated the grind though to level up and get to areas with higher level gear. I spent probably 8 hours grinding away or more. But I have always hated that about JRPGs. I also hated how some boss fights, particularly my attempt with Vide, a main story (not endgame) boss required a ton of planning and set up with specific builds to succeed. It’s understandable given the nature of the games combat that you have to plan a little but I still was feeling burnt out after 8 path final boss fights to have to do a bunch of prep work to even stand a chance against Vide. So no thanks. I quit at the final boss and watched the epilogue on YouTube.
There’s a lot of depth to the exploration and path actions, at least more than I expected. The art style and music were great and the voice acting was pretty good too. It wasn’t a perfect experience but it was still an experience I’m glad I had as it made a JRPG hater a fan of at least this one.

A classic JRPG with all of the good and bad that comes with it. Visually stunning in HD-2D, with some interesting new takes on how classes work and an excellently integrated day/night cycle. However, a lot of the same problems from the first game haven't been learned from, keeping it from true greatness.Updated 1 Year Ago
