Holy Cannoli what a game. I came in ready to 100% be a hater on the ATB system, but it's actually fire. Fun combat, fun settings, fun characters, fun story. The graphics are actually insane for a SNES game. Square Enix please bro give that HD-2D remake it'll feed familiesUpdated 3.5 Weeks Ago

I believe Chrono Trigger to be a flawless game. It is without a doubt the most well crafted JRPG of the 16 bit era and does everything right. I literally cannot find a thing to nitpick about the game. Sure, some aspects of it are simply just good instead of great, when compared to modern games. But as far as 16 bit games go, Chrono Trigger gets everything right. It would be unfair to compare a 30 year old game made on very limited hardware to the best of today in terms of character writing and storytelling. Games on SNES were often just a couple megabytes. You couldn't fit a modern day rpg story into a SNES cart. It wouldn't fit.As I said, Chrono Trigger gets everything right. The story is charming and a very well done time-travel one. As you go through the game you will see actions in one era affect things in another. The overall plot is well done and comprehensive. The main villain is unique from other JRPG villains of the time. The characters each have unique personalities. Chrono may be a silent protagonist but that doesn't stop him from being cool. This is one of the most beautifully made games on the SNES as well. Environmental design, character art, enemy design, they're all top notch. The gameplay is great, and even the difficulty curve is pretty much perfect. It may not be my favorite game of all time, but even one playthrough immediately brings it close.
Chrono trigger is a game that tells the story of a young man Chrono, his inventor Friend Lucca, and a girl Chrono meets at a fair named Marle. Lucca makes a teleportation device and shows it off at the fair. Chrono demonstrates how it works, and Marle wants to try it too. But when Marle enters the teleporter, it reacts with a pendant she's wearing and she's sucked into a portal, leaving the pendant behind. Chrono picks up the pendant and goes after her, while Lucca stays behind to figure out what went wrong with the machine, then follows both through soon after once she can recreate the same effect without the pendant. Chrono ends up in his same kingdom of Guardia, but 400 years in the past. There is a war going on with the army of someone called the Fiend Lord, and everyone is talking about how the kidnapped queen was found but she doesn't seem to be herself.
It turns out that Marle is the princess of Guardia in the present, but is mistaken for her ancestor in the past. Chrono reunites with her, then she disappears due to history being changed since the search for the missing queen of the year 600 has been called off, yet the queen is still in danger. After going and saving the Queen, Chrono saves Marle from being erased from history too, then Chrono, Marle, and Lucca use a new device Lucca made to travel back to their time. Some shenanigans ensue, and they all end up going through another gate that takes them to the year 2300, only the world is in a post apocalyptic state. Everything is destroyed, the Earth is barren. An historical record they find tells them of the Day of Lavos in 1999, the day that a creature that had been sleeping inside the earth for untold ages awoke, came to the surface, and destroyed everything. Marle realizes that if they could change the past and save her after the queen of 600 AD had gone missing, they can change the future and prevent this catastrophe from happening as well.
They embark on a quest through multiple eras, partnering up with others from those eras, to find the events leading to Lavos' awakening and the Earth's destruction in order to stop it. Each era has a nicely contained story that ties into the greater Lavos story, but is nicely packaged up into its own thing. It feels episodic in nature, and greatly benefits the pacing of the game.
The combat in Chrono trigger is different from most other JRPGs of the era. Instead of random battles, you encounter and fight enemies wandering around in each area map. You can run past them if you want, but the game's difficulty curve is very smartly tuned to your expected level based on fighting each thing as you pass through each area. I found most battles to be fairly easy, but most boss fights to be a fair challenge. Each boss fight is unique too. They all have their own gimmick or pattern to figure out, and you have to fight them a certain way. It was expertly designed, and I thoroughly enjoyed each one.
One cannot praise Chrono Trigger without talking about its music. This was Yasonori Mitsuda's first score that he composed, and although the legendary Nobuo Uematsu did 10 of the game's tracks, the majority are Mitsuda's and what a score! This is a contender for the best game sondtracks of all time despite being on a 16 bit system. They're all so memorable, filled with emotion, and really reach the peak of what the SNES sound chip could do. Stand outs are Corridors of Time, Schala's Theme, Wind Scene, and Frog's Theme.
In summary every single aspect of Chrono Trigger is amazing. It's a must play and I recommend it to everyone!

There isn't much to say about Chrono Trigger that probably hasn't been said already. Having completed it finally (I did get quite far back in the day, but stopped for some reason) I can see why its still so highly regarded still to this day. Charming characters, fun and witty writing with lots of twists and turns as you explore the various time periods. The PS1 version has some issues with loading between large scene transitions, going in and out of the menus etc. which is definitely not optimal, but the game itself is still so good that for me it did not end up taking away from a fantastic game.Updated 2 Months Ago

I really like the artstyle, world, story and characters, but i'm just not a great fan of the old J-RPG gameplay loop. The combo system is kinda nice, though.I only kinda disliked the lost sanctuary. It is a really mediocre addition, just a long, boring fetch quest.

Chrono Trigger is a good game, but I don’t think it lives up to the “greatest JRPG of all time” hype. The OST is the only thing that actually earns that hype. I was hoping for a more mature or emotional story, something like FF7, but it ended up feeling like a fairly standard JRPG in both plot and structure. The time travel concept is cool, but I don’t think it reaches its full potential. Except for one moment, it didn’t really hit the things I love about the genre. I’m not a huge fan of ATB combat in general, but the speed setting made it more bearable. Good game, just dragged down by the overwhelming glaze that set my expectations too high.Updated 2 Months Ago

In my opinion, this is the best RPG ever made, and also my favorite game. Chrono trigger is a revolution to the genre. With such a beautiful story and amazing combat, this game feels like a love letter for players. The way you can use combined skills with the characters you want is so great; the music is magnificent, the design of the main cast, and the enemies are beautiful. I will always love playing this game, and I hope more people encounter it so they can enjoy it as I did when I was a kid.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

I have some personal bias with some of the games I've reviewed so far, but Chrono Trigger is truly the closest to a perfect game I've played yet. There isn't a single part of this game that is over hyped. The only nitpicks I have are that a very small amount of combat encounters were either tedious or obtuse, but again that's a nitpick, this game really stands as a prime example in overall game design. It's insane to think about all of the games I've played in my life and how obvious it is that this game either directly or indirectly inspired crucial design elements in those games and across the industry. The pacing of the combat and story is some of the best I've ever seen, and the love put into each character is genuinely felt from the moment they're introduced into each and every of the 13 endings (19 depending on how you want to count them). Multiple tear jerking moments, gameplay sections that'll truly immerse you, music that stands the test of time even 30 years later... This game lives up to all of its hype, and if you're a general fan of video games at all, even casually, this game will always be worth your time, be it now or in another 30 years.

As mecânicas continuam incríveis, a arte continua linda, e a emoção continua viva.
Se você ainda não jogou, dê uma chance. É o tipo de jogo que todo mundo deveria experimentar pelo menos uma vez na vida.

A great game ahead of its time, with many game mechanics still smooth 30 years later! Story rich, using wisely of time travelling subtleties.
Graphics are varied and colourful, blending with the famous design of Akira Toriyama, it manages to show its own personality (despite some characters and buildings being too close to dragon ball).
Music is both epic and iconic, with a hint of Uematsu on the final touches.
I'm super happy to have played this game, (bonus: in original version).
The ds version brings even more content, but original experience made me choose super Famicom.

Chrono Trigger is a good game, and if you look at it in the context of its initial release it was a fantastic game. For someone playing it today for the first time and being experienced in the genre it's just alright though. Especially the story and characters are super basic and never connected to me emotionally at all. Essentially all of them are just archetypes I have seen a lot of times. It's not hard for a story / game / etc. to reach me emotionally, but Chrono Trigger couldn't. Unless you count the OST on its own like the Overworld theme, but that could have been paired with any other game and would have been just as good.

Nostalgia keeps this game at a 7. If this was released today, I’d put it to a 5.Beautiful artwork and interesting story. Gameplay was challenging at times, but the time mechanic was impossible to solve without a guide. Being a grown man, I don’t have years to devote to scouring an entire world across multiple timelines to see which npc holds the dialogue to unlocking the next step in a 12 step quest.

Me vi por dias cantarolando Wings that Cross Time inúmeras vezes durante esse tempo.

Did the virtual console version for a reason... actual copy is like $200. Wii VC is exactly the same as the SNES version. This game was AMAZING, I can see why it has a 91% rating. Just about everything is done well, other than sometimes it's very unclear where you're supposed to go for sidequest and missables, but that's normal for old school RPGs. Double techs were really neat being able to combine moves with different combos for different combinations of characters, lots of magic encouragement which is quite rare for me to see, and most shocking of all there was no random encounters despite how old this game is. Areas were reasonable lengths as well with no forced grinding either. Many of the bosses and enemies were designed great as well. I would highly recommend this to any old school RPG head, shame the physical copies are so expensive though, even the DS version is like $70.
Update: Looking back, this is what I considered to be the best game I played in 2024, so I decide to give it a 100.

It's very hard not to love this game! First time playing it and I had a lot of fun. The characters were amazing, each one of them was well developed. The game is almost 30 years old and holds up well.I liked that there is no need for grinding. I just played and enjoyed the game and eventually got strong enough to beat it.
I was expecting the final_final_final boss to be a bit more challenging but maybe my characters were a bit overpowered :D
At one point, it started to overstay its welcome but thankfully that ended and the game got back to its glory.

TLDR: It is as good as they say! The best RPG of the generation. And I've only played it in 2025, so there are no nostalgia goggles here. Play it now!Pros:
- Everything feels right
- Cast is very interesting, and very well developed, no character feels minor, this is how it should be done
- Looks are timeless
- OST is perfect, what you'd expect from square's golden age
- Battles are not a chore
- Boss battles are tough and you need to think or you'll get KO'd
- It has aged beautifully
- Minigames are still fun
- Decluttered top screen is awesome
- The story, it's so heartwarming, 10/10
- Anime cutscenes are so cute
- Ayla MUCH energy!
Cons:
- The main villain is not really memorable
- You can get lost in space and time. The central npc hinting where to go os very cryptic, he hints once and then you're left to guess
- Can be a little bit simple/easy at times... then it has a huge difficulty spike at the end

I wish I could have played this game without the expectations. I heard so much about how Chrono Trigger's gameplay is amazing, how revolutionary it was, how great the story is, how it's the best jRPG ever made, and how it's literally perfect.
And don't get me wrong. Chrono Trigger is a great game and was certainly one of the best games ever made at the time of its release...
But it's nowhere near the "everyone must experience this game" status for me.
To start with what I like - the music, combat and pacing were fantastic back in 1995 and are still fantastic today. The graphics and premise of the story have aged, but you can see how great they were at the time.
The only thing that doesn't hold up to the praise is... The story. Don't get me wrong, it's completely fine, maybe even good, but "great"? Nah, chief. Maybe for the standards of 1995 videogames, but not today. The dialogue (at least in the original SNES translation) is pretty bad and often detracts from the gravity of situations happening on the screen, making it really hard to get attached to the characters on the screen.
I also don't get people trying to describe any deeper themes to this story. It's a fun little save the world time travel adventure, but little more than that.
That said... This review sounds pretty negative, as I feel the need to justify only giving this game an 8.5 despite it's legendary status. Don't let that detract you from the fact that I enjoyed my time with Chrono Trigger a hell of a lot. The fast pacing, the different locations and time periods, the combat, the music, all of them made for an adventure that never felt like it's wasting my time. The fact that it didn't "change my life" like people thought it would does not mean I wouldn't play it again. I absolutely would, I had a lot of fun.

Just like Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger is frequently regarded as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time.As someone who hasn't played Chrono Trigger before, I was blown away at how this game still holds up to this day.
The story in Chrono Trigger impressed me because even though the premise is simple, the concept is really cool, the goal is clear from the beginning and there are many different ways to approach it, and the pacing is consistent since the game isn't very long nor difficult, so there's no need for grinding at all.
The gameplay impressed me even more; it's not very complex, but it's enjoyable, it looks flashy and it doesn't feel outdated at all; quite the opposite actually.
The characters are charming and engaging enough, not necessarily the best, but good nonetheless.
Also, the visuals and the music are both really great and they hold up incredibly well.
Something I really appreciated in Chrono Trigger personally is the lack of random encounters; it's an awesome quality of life improvement for the genre in my opinion and I wish more older JRPGs did that.
Overall, I got to say, Chrono Trigger is pretty much flawless; I wish the final boss looked more epic... but that's about it. Other than that, I don't have anything negative to say about the game.
Pros:
+ Well-paced and intriguing story
+ Fun combat system
+ Likable characters
+ Very nice visuals and music
+ No random encounters or need for grinding
Cons:
- None
Narrative: 6/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Content: 8/10
Characters: 7/10
Music: 8/10
Graphics/Audio: ?/10
Final Rating: 9/10
- Amazing -
Simply put, Chrono Trigger is... timeless.
Okay, enough with the puns. Chrono Trigger doesn't necessarily excel at anything it does, however, it does almost everything right.
Do I recommend it?:
Chrono Trigger is an easy game to recommend, not only because it's a very good game even to this day, but because it's so accessible, even people who don't enjoy playing RPGs will have fun with this game.

Played on Steam Deck using MelonDS. Great RPG game. Best played on SNES until a better version comes out. Annoying to keep switching screens. Graphics were obviously amazing with art and character designs by Akira Toriyama. Use of Mode7 and other 3D effects make this game look ahead of it's time - 10/10.
Music is amazing. Tracks fit the theme of the time periods and just an overall fantastic OST. Especially when main theme kicks in when we are about to go kick ass. Only criticism is sometimes music gets a bit repetitive - 9/10.
Battles are fun. Party is very well balanced with very few weak pairings. Difficulty was just right for me. First RPG I've played where the use of items felt mandatory. Status bar during battles kept obscuring things on screen even when switching between top and bottom - 9/10.
Story was great. Amazing use of time travel and every party members story fit into the overall one and I actually cared about the back stories. Feels cohesive and memorable. Too much backtracking and had to use guide at times to help me find out what I need to do next to progress story i.e. who to talk to and in what time period - 8/10
Overall - 9/10 - lives up to the hype. Would definitely play a modern remake of this day one.

I first played Chrono Trigger two years ago when I got back into gaming, and now I have the campfire scene framed on the wall in my kitchen, and own the game on three different consoles. For me it kind of represents getting back into RPGs as an adult and finally having time to pick up where I left off as a kid. There's nothing I didn't like about this game, and it had everything - anime cut scenes, no random encounters, iconic art direction, best music of all time, good runtime, etc. They thought of everything from a game design perspective and you can tell attention was paid to the details. Is it my favorite game? No, but that's probably because I don't have any nostalgia attached to it. But there's nothing I can find wrong with this game either. It's great.
