Overall: 9/10 Awesome game :) Best roguelike I have played, but more than that, Hades is an excellently crafted game. Solid storyline, amazing art/visuals, crisp controls & very fun gameplay, great RPG elements with progression of your character over time, and a wide variety of builds + 6 weapons that keep the game fresh even 80+ hours in. I recommend this to any gamer who likes roguelikes and/or action games, you most likely will not regret this purchase. Thank you for an amazing game, Supergiant <3

With the release of Hades II, I think it's time to put the first game aside for a while. I've unlocked basically everything, seen everything, and defeated the final boss more times than I could count. Hot gods, hotter protagonist, and one of the best gameplay loops I have ever experienced. Hades is, without doubt, a damn masterpiece and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.Updated 5.5 Days Ago

Hades 9/10:-Gameplay was great
-Story was great
-Sidequest are a pain in the ass
-Some animation looks chunky but hey still pretty good
-Wasn't a fan of the bosses only changing three times and that's it. I thought they would change it 10 times, with the amount of runs you need.

My first real roguelike, and i loved it. I waited for a physical edition, so I kind of knew the type of game it was. However, the unravelling of the plot through the runs, the interactions with the characters, the little bits of lore you get after defeating enemies... I devoured all of it. Really enjoyed this game, it’s a lot of fun creating various builds in an attempt to beat Hades at sliding difficulty levels. Also, enjoyed all the lore. Some of the prophecies are really difficult to complete, due to being based purely on RNG. Additionally, triggering some character based ones can take forever. Around 70-80 hours in, it really started to feel pretty repetitive. But definitely had a great time progressing through the main storyline.Updated 1 Month Ago

Seeing that Hades 2 is going to 1.0 soon i decided to replay Hades 1 and get to credits. I love how the game reacts to everything you do with voiced dialouge, albeit sometimes at weird times. Its a very fun and challenging game at times that i enjoyed getting the 10 wins needed to hit credits. I wont count it in consideration for goty due to the age of the game today but it is definitely one the the best rougelikes ever made easily.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

OK, so, I'm still playing Hades, I like it so far. I haven't finished it yet, I have thought on it, and I figure I could write them now and edit my review as I develop my thoughts as I go onward. I am a fan of Greek mythology, I could practically describe it as bordering on religious. And I could go on and on about how mythologically accurate this is and how the writers of Hades definitely understood the gods and goddesses they were writing.Furthermore, the characters, aside from the gods, are also very well written making for a very engaging story about forging emotional connections between friends. I do have a criticism with this though, there's a lot to explain.
The inciting incident for the whole game is Zagreus finding out who he thought was his mother wasn't actually his birth mother but is... technically, because she ressurectted him as a baby. So he vows to himself to leave Hades, the land of the dead and also incidentally his father Hades to find Persephone, his actual mother. And a lot of drama is caused because of this.
There are two characters, Thanatos (god of peaceful death, in the game titled as, Death Incarnate) and Megera a fury. A major part of the story is that Megera has to block Zagreus' path and Thanatos hates Zag for leaving, and not even so much as saying goodbye. You can develop/rectify your relationship between the two, but at least initially, all your attempts at giving them nectar always has some kind of dialogue similar to this "Gods, I hate you. I will take this illegal contraband with intense amounts of spite. Did I say I hate you? No. I loath you. You, to me, are a migraine Zagreus. You say you're a god of rebirth Zagreus, change your divine title to god of giving migraines!" Come on Than-a-toes accept the nectar and be nice to me.
I could be exaggerating a bit, but I would rather Megera and Thanatos to be a touch less mean to me when I try to be nice.
I feel the game as a whole is rather repetitive. It's a rougelike, and a very clever one at that, meaning no 2 runsthroughs in the realm of the dead are identical, this is ment to allow for a greater variety of strategies. Dispite this innate randomness, it lacks a certain eh-ness thus making it repetitive.
Now it is very clever (very minor spoilers ahead), Daedelus, skilled architect and craftsman, helped make the evershifting underworld as we see it in the game. The idea being that if the rooms of the underworld shift and change as you wander through them, it will make it harder to get out and outright impossible to map. Being dead, and by proxy, being in Hades (the actual name of the underworld and the dude) kinda relys on you not returning to the surface world.
And another clever thing too about the setting, is that it's full of dead people. Many people (myself included) inately suppose that once you are dead you can't die twice, specifically unless said otherwise. This is smart because you could hypothetically play the game Hades forever and never have to question WHY these characters not only live so long but also never age, that's because you're dealing with GODS and DEAD PEOPLE. Being dead, kinda goes against being (truly) immortal.
The setting also allows the main character to deal with people like Achilles, Madusa and Sysiphus. If we suppose that it is set some time after the Trojan war and some time far too soon for the invention of the gun, it naturally allows things like this to occur.
Now having "completed" the game, or entered the post game of it, I am proud to say that it is good.

A clever twist on the rogue-like format. Even when you don't unlock anything on a run or win, you will still develop the characters and see something unique. All the weapons have their own charms and builds that work well with them. This game was lovingly crafted with top-notch art and voice acting. Home is not where you live. It's who cares when you're gone. I just wish there was more main story content.Updated 2 Months Ago

Gameplay is decent but shallow, looks great, fun character interactions. People kept saying the OST was incredible but I don't think it was very memorable. After 5 clears, I started feeling burnt out and I would have dropped it if I didn't see it was 10 clears to get the credits. That's as far as I got. I know there is more but my enjoyment goes down sharply after every run. I might come back in the future. Forgot to mention but the voice acting and character designs were amazing. The weakest link is definitely the gameplay. There are a ton of roguelites out there that are much funner. The meta progression is a crutch for the bland gameplay. Perhaps it caught many people in the "numbers go up" aspect of it.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

Hades is a roguelite that benefits from insane graphic art and interesting mechanics. It has cool lore, exciting character designs for gods, and a good gameplay cycle.Story-wise, a lot of it has to be picked and deciphered from every character you can speak with, and the more you befriend those characters, the more you might know. I didn't like this feature cause it's not dubbed, and in order to make those characters accurate (for example god of love being charming and else), it's heavily romanticized, which bored me pretty quickly. There are a lot of interactions and more to learn, but you have to be curious and don't mind those parts, which I do.
Although when you beat the final boss (spoiler: Hades), the story takes a curious turn. You'll have limited time on earth itself, outside the underground, and to get the whole story, you'll have to beat the game multiple times to get the lore bit by bit. Which is really smart and makes sense of replays of the game. (I'm being obviously blurry to not spoil too much)
Although the real downside that made me quit this game the first time and almost made me give up again is the roguelite.
This game, when you start, keeps you away from start items, aspects of weapons (more stats and tweaks) base perks and boosts/upgrade, modifiers, even all the gods... therefore you CANT (except if youre cracked) mathematically beat the game on your first runs, because the gameplay is balanced around all those tools, since you lack them before much later in the game you'll feel powerless a lot during your runs. It's the first time I've seen a roguelite do this, and I HATE IT. It's extremely frustrating.
Overall, the gameplay cycle, art direction, story, and fighting are positive. But the balance, amount of useless dialogue, roguelite aspect, and "friendship" feature are not for everyone. It almost made me quite twice.
Good roguelite but not perfect for picky players, but also has too many good points to be considered bad.

Updated 2.5 Months Ago

I’m not a fan of rouge-likes. I get frustrated when I have to bang my head against the same brick wall over and over again without any meaningful progress. Though somehow I still ended up putting close to 50 hours into Hades on switch and another dozen or so on PC.Why? Because Hades has something most other rouge-likes lack : a sense of progression. Every time you enter the first chamber of the Underworld, you know you are going to end up coming back stronger. You may leave with a handful of chthonic keys that unlock new weapons and abilities, or darkness to buy extra lives. You might end up fulfilling one of the many prophecies, or pick up some jewels to add new layouts and bonuses to the dungeons. You might even make some new friends out there, or find some delicious nectar to trade for keepsakes. Or perhaps you just end up doing a bit of fishing.
Whatever you end up doing, you are moving both the game and the story forwards. Every return to the antechamber adds a host of new conversations and character interactions, including, occasionally, the reappearance of new rooms and mechanics. Nothing feels useless, and you never feel like wasting your time.
It helps that I’m a history buff, and Hades’ take on Ancient Greece is both outlandish, amusing and, occasionally, surprisingly tragic. As the story goes on, we learn not only why we are trying to escape, but also the depressing events that have led to our fellow denizens being trapped down there with us.
It took me about twenty runs to make it through the Underworld for the first time, and I’m nowhere close to the end. Hades must be thwarted a total of ten times before the story draws to a close, and even then there are plenty more secrets to unlock, including a special kind of keepsake that can only be gained after completing a series of side quests for each character.
So yes, Hades is a rouge-like. But it’s also a role-playing game with a finally tuned dopamine drip of upgrades and story that is perfectly tuned to keep us coming back for just one more run.
