Hades II is truly something special. Every detail feels tuned and crafted by hand, built by a team that not only understands their audience but genuinely respects the 1% who will see everything, try every build, exhaust every line of dialogue. Time doesn't allow me to be that person but I can feel the layers like rings in a tree, always there, waiting to be uncovered. Every system, every interaction, every line feels placed with intent. Even if I never see it all, I know it’s there, and that kind of depth creates a trust between player and developer that’s rare. The progression is immaculate. Layered and generous without ever being overwhelming. It lets you shape each run without locking you into one way to play. There’s always something new to discover, a small surprise, a shift in tone, a fresh layer unfolding. Systems build naturally, quietly expanding on top of one another, without pressure. Characters evolve at their own pace but unspool, diciplined like a aerial ballet artist. The build variety is outrageous, but always coherent. Everything feels purposeful, interconnected, and rewarding in ways that slowly sink in the longer you play.
Combat is of the work of master crafters, experts in their field. Melinoë feels powerful but never overpowered. Every weapon has bite, and the Arcana system adds serious depth without bloating the core loop. When you lose, it never feels like wasted time, the game always gives something back. Sprinkled into each run is clever incentives to always try something new and strive for the next upgrade.
What absolutely floored me was the sheer amount of dialogue. Every NPC interaction feels like a response to something you did. I've seen the evidence that even hundreds of hours in, you’re still hearing new lines, and they’re all voiced, all fully performed, all backed by some of the best portrait art in the medium. The cast is exceptional, and the writing completely elevates the game.
Visually, it’s stunning, a work of art. The art style has evolved, it's darker, sharper, moodier but still unmistakably Supergiant. Every location has presence. Every animation has weight. You can feel the care and attention in every frame.
And the music, completely untouchable. Darren Korb’s work here is outrageous. Haunting melodies, explosive boss tracks, layered ambience. it’s rich, textured, and always in service of the moment. It is much more than background music, it is the tone, its the expression, it's a character in itself. Easily one of the best soundtracks of the last decade.
This is a studio at the pique of its powers, building something with real love and zero shortcuts. They've thoughtfully crafted so much, we're surpassing the genre ceiling and setting the standard of what being a great rougelike means.
People say this a lot, but I mean it ..Hades II has taken hold of me in a way few games ever do. I’ve stayed up later than I should, found excuses to sneak in just one more run, and caught myself thinking about builds, characters, story and boss fights when I’m nowhere near a controller. Not out of obligation, but because I genuinely didn’t want to stop. It’s had me completely captivated, and I thank the team for allowing me to lose myself in something this meticulously crafted, this generous, and this alive.

Stupidest unlockables in Hades II: Ability to see your map, change the color of the rug in your bedroom, talk to people, unlock currency so you can talk to other people, unlock currency so that you can unlock currency so you can talk to other people, adding tunes to your jukebox one at a goddamn time, a shuffle option for your jukebox (a particularly difficult unlock), option of planting more than one seed at a time so you don't have to click each goddamn one, and other basic bare-ass bones quality of life features that are given from the start in other games.Supergiant Games has made a science out of crafting roguelikes. Each unlockable gives you a little pop of dopamine because we are all addicts. Somewhere in that science it becomes a bit obvious to the player that you've been led this way. Hades II loses a little of its soul because of that.
But it's still a very good game! Fast paced like the original. Fun weapons and abilities. You can get pets, and they're useful. Good level structures. OK story, with excellent voice acting, but I wish there were some much weirder and more interesting characters.
The final act of the game is a dud. Too easy after your playground full of upgrades. Story-wise, not enough tension considering all the hours of buildup. Yawner of an ending.

More content in the pre-release version of the second game than the current version of the first? Need I say more? I do. Hades 2 is a fresh reimagining of the Hades core gameplay loop I love and desire so much. This game requires more planning and precision than required previously, with crowd control being an essential park of Melinoë's kit. Ignore any one part of your kit and you will most likely fail, although this was probably the case for my playthrough as I did not realize you could upgrade your maximum grasp until *after* I beat the final boss.... so it was more difficult for me than it will be fore you! But still, I am quite happy with how every part of this game seems to flow into the next, no one aspect can be left to the side if victory against Time is to be assured. The music in this game slaps as well, I will take as much time possible choosing my boons just to listen to a god's specific themes. The writing and plot in this game are also an improvement on the first, which is not the easy task, but the direction they decided to go is very interesting so far and I cannot wait to see the conclusion to this tale of gods and vengeance. I feel like what I've put in so far to be a good chunk of the content currently available, but I have no idea! I might be able to play for another 20, 30, 40 hours and never hear repeat dialogue, certainty true for the first game, and I have no doubts about this one as well.Updated 3 Days Ago

A fantastic sequel that does everything that Hades 1 did, but better. It's only suffering from the story's ending. There's so much content in Hades 2, it's incredible how polished all of it is and how much variety in each run there is.
Only complaint I have is that the end of the story falls a bit flat and a bit of "Oh that's it?", really wish they did something different.
But it's still a great experience I very much recommend. The characters are fantastic, the music is some of the best I've heard, and I love the combat so much. Extremely excited to see what's next for Supergiant games!

Such a good game. I played 8 to 10h a day since release and got all achievements just 10 days after launch with around 80h. It’s crazy how every run still had new dialogue and events even after so much time. Just when you think it’s over, there’s a whole new game waiting, kind of like Silksong.Funny thing is, I didn’t even like the first Hades that much. It was great and probably the best among roguelikes, but it got repetitive after 15–20 hours. Hades 2, on the other hand, kept me hooked for 80 hours straight. I’m only stopping because I feel like I’ve done almost everything, not because it got boring. Still getting new dialogue every run, so I might play a few more just to see how things go. Masterpiece, even if the ending was a bit underwhelming.

As a standalone game, it's great. As a sequel to a GOTY, it's lacking and too much of the same. The game suffers from the same issue as Hades where the sidestory progression is locked behind time gates, such that if you play too well you'll grow tired of the game before you encounter every side story.Updated 6 Days Ago

It's one of my all-time favorites, and it's not even complete yet. Bought this about a month ago, played it for a couple of hours, and got kinda bored. Recently picked it back up, beat it twice in about 27 hours total, and still feel like there's much more to do. There's a fun challenge mode that has pre set loadouts for you to pick from, difficulty modifiers like in the 1st game (unlocked after you beat the game once), the weapons all feel unique and varied in their own right, combine that woth the new keepsakes, arguably deeper boon system (due to the Magick mechanic) AND there's 2 total regions!? Will absolutely be playing this for a while and can't wait for the full release.Updated 1 Month Ago

Having put 34 hours into Hades 2 in it's initial early access week, I can confidently say this is a step up from the first game and is already worth the price of admission. This game is far ahead of Hades 1 in terms of playable content, in it's earliest from the sequel already has two more areas than the first game with an additional challenge mode. Although their is less weapons, keepsakes are unfinished, aspects need some work, the equivalent to cthonic companions are in shorter supply, and the story is in a confusing place of momentum and stasis. Those will issues will only be fixed as time goes on though, whats actually here right now is a fantastic sequel that doesn't feel like it is retreading unnecessary ground. Melinoe is different from Zagreus which is a good thing, the arcana system is way more interesting than the mirror and her weapons feel different for the most part (the spear doesn't). The addition of chargeable moves and a magic mechanic, makes for more build diversity but that is somewhat hampered by the game having less diverse gods. Maybe I just played too much of the first game but Dionysis, Ares, Artemis (to an extent) and Athena are gone replaced with Apollo, Hephaestus, and Hestia who leave a certain void but hopefully this will be filled as time goes on. The god gauge is gone and replaced with a new boon specifically dedicated to a gauge mechanic, its good but it feels a bit samey every run because its always Selene and most of her hexes need to be buffed, even when upgraded some are just plain bad. The new boss fights are great except what are the final bosses who could use some tweaking because of their readability and damage output, they are harder than anything in the first game (with the exception of Ex Hades) which is good and shouldn't be changed too much. The game makes resource management better, having specific tools for resource types that change in each area bit this kind of makes the heat equivalent somewhat moot. You no longer need more difficult runs for something like ambrosia which makes the mechanic feel like an after thought. Instead you only get one specific resource from it and that's tied to a boss at a specific heat that rotates as you play instead of your danger level with that weapon, that resource is only really used for aspect upgrading which make it feel like an after thought. Lastly, the characters are still great but their mostly unfinished so they feel a little hollow, this mainly applies to NPCs on runs instead of those at your base. With that being said this is already a very well rounded game that will only get better as time goes on, whatever year this game releases in, it will definitely be a game of the year contender.Updated 3 Months Ago

Hades 2 is an absolute successor to Hades. It hits all of the highlights of the first game and improves upon them. The music, art, story, characters, gameplay, progression cadence, and systems are all amazing. If I were to dig deep to find something to complain about this game which is still in early access, I would say they could have gone after the impossible task of making all weapons equally appealing. I look forward to revisiting this game once it has been completed.Updated 1 Year Ago
