It's a miracle that Silent Hill f is this good.

Gameplay-wise, while it may be a twinge too action-centric for me, (hard to really feel the scares in the back-half of the game when the protagonist becomes the scariest character of all), this is still a very solid combat system for a genre that should be focused on everything else. Of course, the highlight, just like all Silent Hill games, comes in the "here's a series of rooms, good luck" moments - which are still so excellent. There unfortunately aren't a ton of these, but the very final one is one of my favorite gameplay sequences in honestly any horror game.

As for the story - it's superb. Interesting, dark, compelling - this would still be a solid 7/10 if you never had to touch the controller. So many really fascinating set pieces here, as we get a beautiful blend of Silent Hill classics and stuff the franchise has never been able to do before.

Silent Hill f is still not the perfect version of a modern day Silent Hill - but it's pretty fucking close. Hopefully one day we'll look back at this one in the same way we look at the original now - a great game that sets up one somehow even better.

Silent Hill f begins with an intriguing setup, but what follows is a confusing and abstract descent into madness that feels more like wading through a fog of ideas than a coherent story. The premise promises psychological horror and mystery, yet most of the time, it seems like a collection of disturbing art pieces loosely connected by cryptic letters and strange cutscenes. I kept waiting for the story to come together meaningfully, but instead it twisted into something I could only partly understand by the time the credits rolled.

The visuals are easily the strongest part of the experience. The monsters are grotesque and imaginative, each designed to make you uncomfortable in the best ways possible. Unfortunately, the environments and character models don’t hold up as well. The dark, narrow corridors and fog-filled hallways make exploration straightforward but repetitive, and the overall presentation can feel limited despite the impressive creature design.

Gameplay is where the cracks begin to show. Combat is clunky and never truly satisfying, and the weapon durability system adds more frustration than tension. I often found myself skipping fights entirely since there was rarely a reason to engage. The sanity mechanic and shrine system add interesting layers, but neither felt impactful enough to carry the experience. The puzzles, however, stand out as the most enjoyable part of the game, each offering small moments of clever satisfaction amid the chaos.

By the end, I understood what Silent Hill f was trying to say, but I didn’t care for how it said it. It’s haunting and beautiful at moments, yet too obscure and clunky to recommend. It left me feeling more confused than scared, and more exhausted than intrigued.

its getting a lot of heat, but i think that its immersive, haunting and has all of the artistic flair you can expect from a silent hill game. the combat is ok and the soundtrack isn't as good as previous entries but god damn is the story and art direction fantastic.

Well, this is not what I was expecting.

I can’t really call this a survival horror game; it’s more of an action-melee title with a few survival horror elements sprinkled in. Unlike the Silent Hill 2 Remake, which surprised many players and deserved its 8s and 9s, Silent Hill f feels, objectively speaking, like a 6 or 7 out of 10 at best.

Using the "Silent Hill" name here feels a bit misleading. You’d expect a strong focus on tension, exploration, and resource management, but instead, you spend most of the game dodging endless waves of enemies and engaging in combat that rarely feels balanced or scary. It never gives your mind a quiet moment to anticipate fear. And that’s what made the classics and even games of the genre that tried something new work: subtlety and atmosphere, not sheer numbers of monsters. This reminds me of how Resident Evil 5 and 6 were criticized for leaning too much into action at the expense of mood and scarcity. Even SH2R didn’t go this far into combat, even though it has much more combat than the original, however, it felt balanced in a way that there were moments of focused puzzle solving, atmosphere and tension (with some unexpected enemies), and not to mention the surrealistic yet human-relatable story expanded upon the original.

As for the combat itself it’s just not good. Hinako feels sluggish and heavy, which could work if the game were designed around vulnerability, but Silent Hill f constantly forces you into fights in cramped corridors or open areas that still don’t give enough room to dodge properly. Even with a dedicated dodge button, attacks often hit walls or miss entirely because of poor hit detection and clunky recoil.

There are plenty of resources everywhere, but that abundance kills the tension. You’ll often find yourself with a full inventory, going back to shrines to “sell” items for faith points to upgrade stats like dodge, stamina, or health. The system works, but it doesn’t add much depth and many items feel redundant or overly similar, and the only major difference is their selling value. Also, it's kind of funny seeing chocolate bars as health items, but anyways...

The story is intriguing in the first half, but quite anime-ish and completely unrelated to SH or survival horror. And the visuals are beautiful for 2025, but still... This just isn't for me. The atmosphere has its moments, and the art direction (especially the flower motifs and twisted imagery) is genuinely striking, though the aesthetic seems to follow the current trend. I also enjoyed the puzzles, even though they aren't special; I played on Hard and found most of them well-designed and creative, feeling new and faithful to the series without being repetitive. The level design also captures the Silent Hill vibe well particularly in the first half, and I only wish exploration had taken priority over constant combat, so it seems the developers forgot even though they were designing areas full of hallways that resemble the previous games in the series, this won't work for this combat-heavy game because of the massive hit box, but I won't complain about the later parts in that regard because they are basically big arenas. so yeah, I didn’t really enjoy the anime-inspired tone.

Overall, I regret paying full price. I expected something closer to last year’s SH2 Remake: fresh yet faithful, eerie and unsettling, with that surreal, awkward character acting reminiscent of Lynch, and a bunch of new areas and stuff. If that’s what you’re hoping for, you’ll likely be disappointed. But if you’re into action-oriented games with a more anime-style story and tone, this might work for you.

I recall that people were angry because IGN gave 7/10 for this game (which I also think is a fair score all things considered objectively speaking), but people were angry before even playing the game itself in first place, showing how people take different options so seriously these days. If you think it’s the best game you’ve played this year or one of your favorites of all time, then give it a 10/10, and it’s fine and I’ll respect your opinion. But honestly, it’s not resonating with me, and I’ve been forcing myself to play these later parts of the game that are basically continuous arenas.

If I would rank this objectively, I'd say it's a 6/7 out of 10, because I know some elements may please players that like this style of gameplay, but for MY taste, it’s a solid 5 out of 10. Overall, I'd personally recommend to wait for this game to be sold for cheaper, but if you wanna give it a try knowing that it's not a survival horror game and has even more combat than SH2R, you should give it a try to give your own personal opinion.

Silent Hill returns, and it’s everything I wanted—a twisted, floral nightmare that feels both true to the originals and boldly inventive. Ebisugoka’s misty world stands on its own, with red flowers and Japanese folklore creating a fresh visual language that’s used to its fullest potential. Hinako’s story is tragic, grotesque, and unforgettable—there’s one scene (you’ll know which one) that left my mouth hanging open for hours. I found the deliberate systems very noteworthy: items can be exchanged for faith or consumed, the focus and sanity meters give you powerful but limited options, and when used well, combat becomes strategic, snappy and rewarding. I also loved Hinako’s journal: it adds an interesting inner monologue that kept me engaged with the story. The scares aren’t as paralyzing as the original trilogy, but the atmosphere is creepy enough, and the story is bold enough to stand beside them. It’s not trying to be the same as old Silent Hill—it’s different, but good different.

UPD.

This game has superarmor on every enemy since it doesn't know how to create challenge naturally. Yet it's not hard. the counter mechanic is a mistake. It flattens any interesting dynamics of the combat. Could have been compelling if there was risk to getting surefire hitstun. Perfect dodge as well refills the stamina and could loop heavy attacks which cause stun. Though there is an attempt to make it harder with feints. It's mostly waiting your turn, trying to get hitstun. Closer to the end, there are a ton of sections where you're just doing chip damage until you can build meter. It's even the basis for a boss. Running past enemies is simple. Though there has been a couple moments where it tries to trap with multiple enemies in narrow spaces. More of that!! Enemies as an obstacle does not work when I'm playing on hard and still getting a ton of resources. I could kill everything and still have resources to spare. Some of them are so spongey (and mandatory). Just not fun to fight. How much combat it wants you to engage in is a horrible mistake and gets worse and worse as you get to the end. It becomes a slog. Where are the puzzles? This series would benefit to go in this direction.

As for exploration, I actually like being in the space and checking every corner. Really nice art direction. But on a mechanical level, it's hard to consider it good. The amount of times it tells you to collect 3 mcguffins is bordering on parody. Starts to feel like a checklist. I think SH2R did the same? It's basically escape room design extended to every section but the town.

NG - it's a story of women's rights. Hard to interpret in any other way. The game wants to seem thematically rich the way it spells out its mysteries. Even through journal entries it can't help itself. What if meaning was unravelled through gameplay? Hinako trying to fight it however she can (other Hinako represent societal pressure). It makes sense that there is so much combat thematically. But I'm not convinced it being so gamey and plentiful adds to it. A painkiller addiction starts pushing her into a corner. She kills her arranged husband and some others due to it. Amongst things like actual occult and other characters plights (loneliness, obsession, longing/guilt). A bit forgotten in final act. Or maybe a cynical view of her friends where this world is merely a perception. How does Hinako see her world then? She said she sees every man like her father, violent, and willing to sell his daughter. The women as victims as well as abusers themselves for upholding the status quo. Maybe a kind of commentary of kid vs adult mentality. Where the fog world Hinako wants to rebel at all costs to stay true to herself and the shrine Hinako is compelled to integrate. Even the husband was in love with her and Hinako seemed interested. Still from one of her perspectives, the rituals (marriage) took her body, soul, and identity. The two Hinako butt heads in the final act. However, mentioning all this makes me think of it as corny in the way it frames these conflicts. The drugs, her perception, it's too gamey. Lacking elegance in its delivery. Ultimately, I'd even call it one dimensional.

NG+ ending requirements are interesting. Not taking any pills. Contextualizes Shu enabling her and through gameplay contextualizes all of the pills laying around in the world. The fact that painkillers restores her "sanity" meter adds a wrinkle. But I'm not so sure the requirements are all that conducive to an enjoyable experience. Like looking at every nook and cranny to see if something has changed. A new note or one of the 5 shrines for the optional quest. In ending 2, Shu mirrors town Hinako. But is that perception of Shu or actually him? In a note earlier, he says he's moving on but here he changes his mind. It wasn't worth playing again.

The first playthrough is evocative enough and on NG+ they start explaining even more in-between the lines. Watching all the endings, it starts feeling hokey. Just Hinako screaming the same themes over and over but more explicitly than the last. If you listen to the english track, it starts becoming apparent that the dialogue can devolve into the worst kind of anime lines and delivery. Especially in the following endings. The abstraction of the Japanese language must've stopped me from picking it out. As for NG+. you learn some interesting things along the way, but the multiple playthroughs exist to make NG less impactful. Draining the remaining interpretation and intrigue from the world. Making it boring. What's funny is that one of the few things they leave for interpretation is the occult. Which is incredibly unoriginal, reminiscent of "Higurashi When They Cry". I know the writer is the same, it's just lame the exact ideas make it into Silent Hill f.

⭐️⭐️⭐️¼ | Scare: 😱😱 | Gore: 🩸🩸🩸🩸 | Combat: 💥 | Story: 📜📜📜📜📜

I was looking forward to this new instalment of the Silent Hill series, even if the location and the overall atmosphere has fully shifted to Japan. However, the game didn't fully hit home for me.

What I liked:
* The way the story unpeels itself is very satisfying. I'm sure that if I would play through the multiple iterations of the endings it would give me even more depth to the story.
* Hinako is an interesting main characters.
* The letters you find contain solid lore about the area, and background information about her friendships and family.
* The exploration is fun, especially when you enter the typical "Silent Hill" buildings where you fill in the map little by little with locked doors.
* Story combat is the normal difficulty setting, and I never really had a hard time. Weapons break, but because of my exploration I always found enough items to fix or a new weapon.
* The travel between the two worlds keeps the gameplay interesting because gameplay changes between worlds.
* Upgrading stats was a nice bonus.
* The music and sound effects are creepy and very Silent Hill.

What I didn't like:
* Inventory management is a pain. I sold everything I could sell at all times, because most of the time I couldn't pick up all the items I found.
* Combat is frustrating. There's a second in which you can parry some attacks, but you can't parry every attack, which makes parry very punishing to achieve. Before you know it you're squaring off to an enemy who will only do non-parry attacks. It would be better if the enemy would change colour when parry isn't possible if you want to introduce that mechanic.
* Combat also just isn't very fun. It's a little bit like whack-a-mole where you just keep hammering on enemies as they hammer you occassionally.
* The fact that you truly have to play through the game three or four times to get the real ending is a no-go for me. I prefer to be able to reach a good ending in the first playthrough by doing certain things. I might pick the game up one day again, but more likely will I watch a playthrough with different endings instead, the combat is too much of a pain.

Overall, this game is a little bit strange. The story is great, the world is fantastic, but it doesn't feel like Silent Hill. There's a fog, there's a pipe, but there are crucial elements (at least in the first playthrough) missing that make Silent Hill Silent Hill in my opinion. I'm happy this game exists though, because it was fun to play through.

Silent Hill F is a very mixed bag for me personally. Not in the sense that I dont like it or think its a great game. I do. I think this is probably one of the better silent hill games honestly. The thing about this game, is just that there is so much stuff about and around this game that is so strange, that it hurt my experience a bit.

First off the setting, and people saying "how is this a silent hill game." Well, ill tell you. Its a silent hill game in every single way except setting. See, the vibe of the town, the story, enemies, music, gameplay, combat, exploration are all ripped out of a silent hill game. Sure, you could argue that if you ripped out the fog and some of the other connecting elements this wouldnt really feel like an entry in the series, but yet I think youd still get the takeaway that its heavily inspired by it. The story takes elements from the first game, as well as SH2, and remixes them to create a story about oppression and your place in the world. The gameplay as well features the trademark melee combat as well as hallways with tons of "blocked" doors. I even think despite all the combat changes, I think it still feels like silent hill, and honestly I totally understand why they added stamina elements to the game. But just because I understand it, doesnt mean I think its good.

The gameplay is the worst part of the game, hands down. I took a 9 day break from playing this game, because I was just so damn bored out of my mind. I played the new skate game, my boyfriend came to visit, I had exams and interviews to prep for, yet I just didnt want to play this game. See, the combat in this game is not bad, and in fact I actually think its pretty good. I think the weapon durrability system is fine, and I actually think it does a fine job at mimicing the ammo economy for a typical gun. I think the problems kinda arise when you take into account that this is a survival horror game, and so thus you can only have a limited number of weapons, and thus that leads you to want to save all your stuff for "just in case." On top of that, the game teaches you at the start how easy it is to run by enemies, as well as how much damage you can tank on story mode (the recommended difficulty), that I kinda just ended up running past everyone, even in the dark shrine sections where weapon durrability isnt a problem.

See, at the start of the game your weapons arent all that good, and just some of the later enemies especially just take so many damn hits to kill, that its not really worth it to kill them, especially because they dont actually give you anything if you do. So yeah, naturally it would be quicker and easier to just run past them. This works for the most part, but when it doesnt, it kinda just kills the game for me. Like, I had one part where I had to find three items or something, and I had two of those blind monsters chasing me for like 5 minutes while I just ran around this maze looking for 1, and it was just so boring and unfun that I took my long break right after. After my break however, I kinda actually started trying to engage with the combat system a bit more, and honestly I dunno, I think its actually pretty fun and not too bad at all, althought that could just be because you get a bunch of better weapons and upgrades at the end of the game. The same thing happened to me with the exploration. Most of the items in this game are completely useless, besides just the bandages and medkits, so my small ass inventory is just being filled up with random junk, the environment has really nothing in it besides this crap that I never used, and the game is extremely linear with little extra areas. But once again, as I started kinda looking around more, I found some upgrade materials and inventory upgrades and the game just got more fun as there was more reason to explore.

The story as well is similar to this. The story is easily the best part of the game. The voice acting and writing is generally of quality, but I found it kinda getting repetitive. Go do one thing in the normal world, go do something in the shrine, repeat. And while some interesting character stuff was happening, nothing narratively really progresses for like the first half of the game, and I just got bored and uninterested. After completing the game however, my opinion has completely changed. I think this game does a great job at having a really interesting story, with a really compelling theme to it, all while having a new game plus option that adds 4 entire more endings. I do wish the pacing was a bit faster, and the game could be a little more clear at times, but overall I think thats more of a gameplay issue.

So why is this game better than something like downpour or homecoming, when those are also third person melee action games. Well, this game has refined and modern combat, great writing and story, a cool looking world to explore, and tons of extra side content to do. I think this is a great game, with some problems.

Please do yourself a favour and play all the endings.

Story - 9.5/10
Gameplay - 7.5/10
Music - 8/10
Graphics - 9/10
Overall - 8.5/10

The best part of the game is the story. Really strong cast, I like games that only put the spotlight on a few. Performance is also great (I played in sub). The lore of the town is strong and is delivered through documents (which are important to read). For a game that doesn't take place in Silent Hill, they've developed the town enough to build its own backstory while fitting with the overall series. Through first playthrough, the story is extremely confusing. I'm aware that the series is known for abstract and vague story telling, but finishing the game once barely made sense to me. This is what most players will do, and while I appreciate ng+ having more reasons to pursue, it's a flaw. A lot of the story is flushed out in ng+ and ng+ 2. I was curious enough to go for these playthroughs immediately and I was rewarded. Once you understand it, the story is really good and well done. The reason I like games like this is because it discusses themes and topics not usually covered. I feel like that's what Silent Hill is about, not just the town. Ending 4 acts like a conclusive ending tying up all character stories and explaining everything. Endings 1, 2 and 3 act as consequences to your actions throughout those playthroughs.

I think gameplay is the biggest gripe for most players. No one associates SH games with counters, dodging, and stamina management. I personally didn't mind it. I played SH2 Remake and the combat there only consisted of pressing one button continuously. So I welcome the depth in combat. You get some "abilities", builds, weapons, and challenging boss fights (which change with the playthrough, so more incentive!). Enemy variety is more than sh2 as well. There's also a good amount of puzzles (some being headscratchers) and I loved how they are relevant to the narrative and plot. Puzzles also change up based on difficulty. In terms of negatives, there's some forced fights which suck. Also some of the level layout (in the dark shrine) are really confusing and hard to navigate (but maybe that's the point?). As mentioned earlier, ng+ playthrough change up enemies, bosses, opens up locations with additional lore.

As someone who loves the SH2R soundtrack, I was initially a bit let down by the soundtrack here. The main theme is good and you can hear tones of silent hill in it (since it's the same composer). But everything else seemed too short or a background thought. However, I did notice ng+ added more tracks which are good. Still mostly on theme of SH but not as good as the prior ones.

It's not the most advanced in terms of fidelity but having no performance issue and 1 minor glitch (stuttering in 1 section) is more impressive with recent releases. Everything is solid, I love the desolate representation of the small town and the contrast to the dark shrine. The game has replaced the rusty, grotesque look for unnerving and gory environments. It's hard to describe but the scarlet and blue hue seem to be a big part of their vision. The presence of the red flowers and bloody enemies look disturbing but also pretty in a way. I really liked the shift of tone and it worked well with the setting and lore. Amazing art direction.

Overall, I thought this was a really good game which is misunderstood by a majority of players stopping after one playthrough. I'm not blaming them but they are also disservicing themselves by not experiencing the entire story.

Very impressed with this one. The combat kinda annoyed me by the end but nothing crazy. That's my main complaint though. Everything else fit together super well, I feel like I have a ton of questions that apparently are very present in NG+. The story/writing/environments/pacing are all very well done.

first ending unlocked and I'm already convinced this may be my new favorite SILENT HILL game— one that seemingly starts slow but quickly gives way to incredibly deliberate pacing, where the horrors unfold fast and the true meaning of everything only becomes more and more suffocating as you drown in flowers and fog— legitimately terrifying direction, amazing writing, complex characters, a bonechilling score, and combat that actually forces you to get upclose and personal with enemies while constantly managing your limited supplies— SILENT HILL (is so) f(ucking back)

As soon as Ryukishi07 was introduced as the writer of Silent Hill f, it immediately became my most anticipated upcoming release. I had never played a Silent Hill game at that point, but Umineko and Higurashi, part of Ryukishi07's When They Cry series, are two of my favorite games of all time. Since the time of that announcement, I have now played the remake of Silent Hill 2, so I have at least some point of reference for the series. In my view, with Silent Hill f, at least after playing through the first ending, Konami has arranged a perfect marriage between Ryukishi07's ideas explored in the When They Cry series, and the themes and tone of the Silent Hill series.

I like to think of Ryukishi07's inclusion in the series as being similar to when a guest director joins a long running TV show for a single episode - the goal is to showcase that director's unique capabilities in a way that still matches the "house style" of the show at large. Ryukishi07's prior games are visual novels with a colorful illustrated aesthetic. They feature hours of "slice of life" scenes and goofy humor to endear you to the characters and pave the way for your eventual heartbreak when terrible situations and tragic reveals envelop them. This game has nothing resembling these "slice of life" scenes, and the aesthetic is more of a dark, grimy photorealism with bursts of surreal and often grotesque imagery. One might argue that the Japanese setting is too far removed from the usual style of Silent Hill, especially longer term fans of the series, but having just played Silent Hill 2 remake, I feel Silent Hill f captures all the key tonal and atmospheric elements that anchor that game. This game features familiar Ryukishi07 story concepts like young kids grappling with interpersonal relationships, the fine line between superstition and religion, the blurring of the real and imaginary, the battle between free will and fate, and the kinds of traumatic outcomes these struggles can yield. When presented through the lens of Silent Hill, it's plain to see how well these concepts fit in with the series' psychological horror themes, making this feel both like a Ryukishi07 game and a Silent Hill game, as well as something completely unique.

What struck me the most is how when horrific things happen to certain characters in When They Cry, because it's a visual novel, your imagination fills in those scenes in your mind based on text alone - whereas with Silent Hill f, you see those types of scenes in near full detail, the camera cutting away only at the most sensitive moments. With this phenomenon, and the lack of "slice of life" scenes, it serves to highlight just how dark some of Ryukishi07's ideas are, and I think injecting them into a series known for its wretched exploration of the psyche is an even better vehicle for that tone than if Ryukishi07 were to write a story like this as his own visual novel. Don't misunderstand - I'm not saying this is better than When They Cry. Personally I probably prefer the counterbalance of happy scenes and depressing ones that those games feature, but Ryukishi07 seems to have gone to lengths to mold his unique perspectives into the shape of a Silent Hill game, and in that respect, I love it.

Since I've only finished the first ending, I can't evaluate the story fully, but at this point it's kept me pondering in the same way finishing a single ending of Silent Hill 2 did. This series is not afraid to leave tons of details up to the audience to piece together for themselves, and that concept specifically, of the player solving the mystery for themselves, is one that Ryukishi07 has hammered home in his prior work as well. I'm fascinated to see the other endings to learn more about what's going on, but since it's not as easy to play through an action horror game as it is to read a visual novel, it might take some patience to do that.

I've focused mostly on the story in this review, but to briefly touch on the other elements -

The action horror gameplay is very well executed, if occasionally a little repetitive by the end of the game. I think it's very satisfying to nail perfect dodges and counters, and the "hard" difficulty really demanded I use all of my resources to scrape through encounters.

The most riddle-like puzzles are the most satisfying ones in the game, especially when mixed with an urgent combat scenario, although collecting "crests" feels trite.

The art is stunning with horrendously beautiful creature and environment designs.

The soundtrack features some solid themes and ambient soundscapes, but it's nowhere near the level of Silent Hill 2's set of classic tunes.

Shout-out to the game for consistently jump-scaring me, and for its mostly efficient pacing, two elements that shined above Silent Hill 2 remake for me.

This review may be updated once I complete all the endings, but right now I am just so happy this game came together like it did.

A bit confuse narrative about traumas developed by a teenager, based on issues such as the role of women in Japanese society in the 60s, patriarchy, social conventions, etc. Can be kind intriguing trying to figure out what's happening, I'll give it that, but I didn't enjoy the protagonist. I found her too robotic and poker face to connect with and because of that, the narrative wasn't as immersive as I would like. Also, gameplay is nothing special. I found the sets overly linear and static, combat is clunky, puzzles are repetitive and it isn't slightly scary.

Silent Hill f really surprised me in a good way. The Japanese setting gives it a super eerie, fresh atmosphere that stands out from the rest of the series. Combat feels unique and surprisingly smooth, with just enough tension to keep you on edge without being frustrating. I really liked the enemy designs which are super creepy and creative, definitely some of the best in the franchise. Akira Yamaoka absolutely nailed the OST, as expected and every track fits perfectly and adds so much to the mood. Also, props to the devs for optimizing it well. Runs great, looks great, and if you're a Silent Hill fan, this is one you definitely shouldn't miss.

After finishing Silent Hill f with all five endings in about 32 hours, my overall impression is very positive. I’d give it an 8.5/10.

The game’s atmosphere is outstanding, dark and deeply unsettling, perfectly complemented by an excellent soundtrack that enhances every tense and emotional moment. The artistic direction and psychological tone capture the classic Silent Hill spirit beautifully.

However, the combat is the weakest part — there’s too much of it, and while it works, it often breaks the pacing and feels more like an obligation than an engaging feature.

Overall, Silent Hill f is a strong modern entry that successfully renews the series without losing its essence.

The game is a hot, rather disappointing mess. It is a game that has lots to offer but sabotages everything - contradicting itself too much. Whenever I like something about the game it turns around and does something utterly dumb that puts me off.

But let's start with the good stuff:
The visuals and sound-design are good and the games use of colour is on point - sometimes it looks outright stunning. The music feels like it is a japanese interpretation of older Silent Hill-themes. It fits the game quite well.
The game-world is constantly changing, and I love how stuff gets worse and worse over time; the red growth seemingly taking over things. It get's more interesting, and the world starts to evolve and interconnect in new ways. Good stuff.
Sadly so far there is not enough chances to go back and the intrigue is totally contradicted by how it does not pay of to look how things change if you get the chance to do so.

That brings me to the disappointing aspects:
The world is just an array of mazes in which to run to and fro - like the appartments in Silent Hill 2 - but boring. It is quite linear (on its own not a bad thing, most SH games are), but when exploring, then it is not worth the hastle most of the time. The level segments feel chopped up even if they are one world, so they seem smaller than any SH game before somehow. It is visually trying to appear big but it is all a facade.

Sadly Silent Hill f insults the intelligence of the player in multiple ways.
Firstly: There is NO ambiguity whatsoever. Storybeats are spelled out too much. Subtlety? Never heard of it!
Secondly by constantly telling you what the objectives are (yes, even on hard puzzles mode). You enter an area and are immediately told "go there..." or "do that...". The message is always killing the suspense the game built up to the moment. This is a SH game, no ubisoft slop. For the love of god let me explore and figure out what to do.
Sadly there is too many monsters for my liking. The combat is quite parry focused - so if you are good at it, then it takes away from the horror. You are not afraid but rather bothered by it after a while. Running away from monsters seems less viable than in previous installments. It used to be a big aspect: pick and chose your battles. But it is not really possible this time around. Combined with weapon degradation it just sucks. The inventory limit is way too strict, so you constantly run back to the shrine to "sell" stuff. Which of course ads padding to the playtime - but boredom as well.
All these things put together and the game becomes more tedious than tense or scary.
A shame really, because the atmosphere in general is just great.

The addition of sanity level sounds good on paper - in the end just falls flat because it boils down to "just" being a secondary health bar in a way. I know it is reductive but it is not intriguing enough. Obviously the devs thought so as well because it is not even used in the lower combat difficulty.
And the stamina-based combat the force on you is straight out of a thrird grade souls-like game. Swing your weapons twice and then die of exhaustion.

Silent Hill f feels like an old-school game, just not in the good, nostalgia kind of way. It is not polished enough to warrant the insane prize they are asking.
It has too many (more or less) good ideas that contradict each other and end up falling flat.
This feels like a Silent Hill-fanfiction. Someone knew a lot about the franchise but did not fundamentally understand what made it work.
Just like the western SH-studios did not really grasp the eery mystique of the initial 3 (or 4) games, this doesn't either. It is trying its hardest but with too many ideas that just do not work together for the betterment of the Silent Hill-formula.
That is why I still think that there is no reason this is called a Silent Hill-game besides Konami making more money from it this way.

tl;dr:
· poor performance
· janky combat,...
· with too many messy, unnecessary mechanics
· good visuals and great sound
· nice, "evolving" world
· poor writing

Just wait for a deep sale if you are intrigued and like Silent Hill games.

really loved the game so much! also my realization of how the game is connected to the rest of the franchise made me love the game even more!
the only thing stopping me from replaying is probably the clunky combat.
the game lives in this weird middle ground of survival horror and action horror. i wish it went full action horror and didn't bother with the survival horror as much so that the combat was more fleshed out. only gripe i have with the game.
otherwise enjoyed every bit of it, and loved all the different endings which i definitely won't be trying to get.

I have two main issues with this game:
● Combat: Hard combat difficulty is, unfortunately, not especially hard, just frustrating. Enemies deal too much damage and have too much HP. The waiting game and resource management around the counterattack, focus attack, stamina and sanity meters never fully realizes its potential, especially when paired with the high damage values of Hard difficulty. Story combate difficulty is also too easy. There is no satisfying middle ground.
● Story: You need to play this game at least two times to get a satisfying ending. The ending you get on your first playthrough challenges you to play the game again, like a good cliffhanger ending. Unfortunately, most of your second playthrough will consist of exactly the same content as your first with some slight variations in cutscenes and one extended puzzle. And it will not be a short playthrough, because you still have to scour every room to find new notes and journals that reveal more of the story (to the game's credit, these new journals are well written and meaningfully advance the plot). There is no reason the game had to be like this. They could have come up with a more focused solution, like replaying only certain short segments of the game to change your "choices". As it is, it's too much of an ask.

Silent Hill f is one of the best games i've had the pleasure of playing being a mixture of horror and souls-like gameplay with a mysterious story explained in segements similar to Signalis having you to piece the story together bit by bit.

Although the game is very good, one thing prevents it from obtaining the fabled 10/10, It doesn't have great gameplay balance.

The ending half of the game starts to become alittle too cluttered with rooms of enemies you can't progress til you kill all of them followed by the "Lost in the Fog" Action difficulty being a complete mess in itself, although when fighting in a 1v1 encounter it's a great system, but most of the time you'll be facing multiple enemies at the same time followed by what i consider to be the worst game balancing i've ever experienced with Lost in the Fog difficulty ending 4.

My only warning for you is if you attempt to play for the Platinum and/or play Lost in the Fog action difficulty, absolutely do not attempt to get ending 4, it's completely unbalanced and a singular fight had me have more deaths than my entire time playing the game.

Not a Silent Hill game at all other than maybe the puzzles. The combat was complete trash like hitting a button and it not registering sometimes was annoying, locking on felt pointless when it was way easier to look around and attack without doing so. They were trying to do souls like combat but failed miserably because the frame rate would dip so hard you couldn't tell when you should react. And Silent Hill has never been about combat to begin with anyway so I find it hilarious they tried to make it the main focus. The story was kind of cool though with Hinako tripping out in the first ending you get but I decided to just look up the other endings because im not putting myself through that JANK ASS COMBAT again. I pushed myself to finish this game once and never again but overall it was an alright survival horror game but definitely not a Silent Hill game they just slapped the name on there to rake in money.

Silent Hill F follows Hinako, a young tomboy in 1960s Japan, as she and her friends try to flee from a fog that enveloped their town in red spider lilies and monsters.

The general structure is exploring a corrupt Ebisugaoka, then whenever Hinako's asleep, a dark shrine with a friendly man wearing a fox mask guiding you through a ritual. Puzzles are tense but intriguing in the context of their presentation (such as the scarecrow field, or a home looping after finding calendar entries which lightly reminded me of PT).

Your main stats are HP, Stamina, and Sanity (used for Focus attacks, if an enemy does Sanity damage when you're out you'll take HP damage instead). You can increase these stats given you've accrued enough Faith from offering food items at a Hokora (save points), and found an Ema to do so. Hinako has a light, heavy, and focus attack per weapon; of which you can hold 3 at once. You can also dodge, though there is also a window to parry and weapon degradation. If you keep an eye out there are plenty of generic healing items, and food healing items which can be offered at save points if you're pressed for bag space (this could be frustrating as food items stack but you can only hold so many types). I was never pressed for weapons or healing items, but never felt like I could waste them for a good balance. You are also able to find, and redeem faith for Omamori which augment gameplay in a minor way. After a certain point in the Dark Shrine, combat gets to be very fun as Hinako gains unique traits.

I appreciate the themes very much, touching upon topics such as gender roles, abusive parents, bullying, and drug use. The narrative structure bouncing back and forth between Ebusugaoka and the Dark Shrine was compelling for someone who felt a split sense of self, the self she knows and the person/priorities society expects her to be. The realistic visuals look gorgeous, especially with so many red flowers everywhere. Enemy design often makes the feminine feel grotesque and hostile, with mounds and jerky movements.

I played on Story Difficulty and Hard Puzzles, which was the default setting. There are 5 endings (1 being the joke UFO ending in many Silent Hill games), though the first ending is the same for everyone. This ending is rather abrupt and confusing before you can piece together the true scenario from the other endings, which require you to not use a certain item throughout your entire playthrough. I didn't want to beat the game 4x for each additional ending however, and ended up looking them up instead. Though I can't say much without spoilers, Ending #3 made me incredibly happy, as someone who was a tomboy with a boy best friend in childhood.

Almost fantastic, but could have been more balanced and better in a few of its systems and flow.

Silent Hill f completely drew me in from start to finish. The 1960s Japan setting feels fresh yet perfectly fits the Silent Hill spirit. Exploring Ebisugaoka was both beautiful and terrifying — some locations (like the scarecrow fields and the school) honestly stuck with me long after I put the controller down.

The atmosphere is unmatched. Sound design and Akira Yamaoka’s soundtrack create constant tension, and I found myself holding my breath more than once. The story, written by Ryukishi07, is cryptic and layered — I thought I understood it, then the ending flipped everything, making New Game+ feel almost essential.

Gameplay is mostly exploration, puzzles, and melee combat. It’s not action-heavy, but when fights happen, they feel tense and satisfying. The puzzles really reminded me of classic Silent Hill — clever, challenging, but never unfair.

I finished my first run in just under 9 hours and immediately started again. That says a lot. Silent Hill f isn’t just a good horror game — it’s one of the best I’ve played in years.

While I did enjoy the puzzles and combat on my playthrough, I don't feel like they are strong enough to carry me through a second one. Even tough story-wise I would be intrested. This is a shame because the game clearly wants you to do at least a second playthrough and even lays out clues of what to do to possibly get a different ending. Still I am glad I played it and am definitly intrested to check out other titles in the series.

There are some big flaws, especially in the last stretch of the game, but everything else is great.

This is a great game but it certainly has flaws. The graphics on PC are pretty bugged out and the game definitely needs patching. The camera is not well suited for the type of game that it is, with a very narrow FOV and small rooms making it hard to fight even one enemy, let alone multiple. The puzzles start off being really good, but end up being really samey and bland. The combat is engaging. Some of the enemies are a bit of a pain to fight. The audio and story are both really good. I like the art style as well.

I would not really call this a "Silent Hill" game because it is lacking the vibes that those games have. I wish it were given its own title so it could breathe on its own. Still a pretty damn good game though. I ended up buying it after pirating it so that's a mark of a fantastic game for me.

Most frustrating gaming experience i've ever had. Good things about this game is it's visual style, good ost, pretty locations and rarely sometimes good horror experience (in the middle of the game in school and corresponding parallel world - best part, all other moments.... i don't know, they are so boring, meaningless.. even horrors from itchio would be better in giving you good horror experience sometimes putting up hard psychological themes). Awful combat system, which i even don't want to describe, you can feel all its problems near to the end, where you have to fight 5+ enemy waves. And about story... it's... not what i expected from great Silent Hill series game, which is famous by illustrating deep psychological themes. Here i only found primitive uninteresting main character with same uninteresting problems, all of which came down to the peak of foolishness and absurdity. I can't even say something about plot, it was just.... about nothing. Overall, pretty middle game. Someone will definitely like it
