When in This Game do You Know When to tap? (I Know the Game is Old)

I played this game whenever I was like 8 and I never knew what the people were doing when they were pressing the buttons without hitting the bar. I have looked all over and I still do not understand when in a song do I know I can do it there? Also, how do I do it?

It's been ages since I played, but I believe there's a pretty good tutorial in the game. Should be on the main menu.

If I remember correctly, the ones without the black ring around the white centres a the hammer ons/ pull offs

also - hammer-ons and pull-offs appear more frequently in higher difficulty levels - the lower difficulties have much fewer in each song so you need to strum just about every note =)

I played the game with a regular 360 controller and got quite good at it lol, even won a fair amount of duels online. But I couldn't complete the career on Hard because of "One", that last segment is just too much.

I can't handle anything above medium difficulty.... and I play actual guitar lol
