Great game for the time. Too complex and from my perspective too many dungeons. I was able to finish it thanks to the easy info available on the internet, but in the early 90s this was madness to finish on your own.

Really cool and worth playing for the historical reasons if nothing else, but really brutal for my gen-z sensibilities. The amount of searching in this game for the right item to bring to the right spot is almost cruel but I think if I played this as a kid I would've loved that honestly.

This game is quite good, I don't know how much I can comment on specifics as I am writing this 3 and 1/2 months after completion but I'll try. The item variation and selection was amazing, there are so many to pick from and so many you get to use. The dungeons were creative and imaginative, with some highlights being the Ice Palace, Turtle Rock, and Ganon's Tower. The bosses, while particularly difficult for the series, were fun and a good challenge. What brought this game down a little bit is its slightly archaic design, especially in UI elements; but other than that it was a great game.

A fun experience but some random jank lessened my enjoyment of it. just having to walk into a certain waterfall, having to push a certain block, etc. Puzzles like that were so unclear at times. The aesthetic was great though and definitely choice SNES vibes.

A great game for its time, but outdated enough by today's standards to hook a newcomer to the series. I'll start with the good: great visuals and music for the platform, cool exploration atmosphere... that's all. ALttP suffers from its outdated game design - the game punishes you for not knowing, which doesn't really fit with the idea of “explore this mysterious world”. You can tear through a crowd of enemies for 20 minutes only to find out that you have to grab an item from the other end of the map to get through a dungeon. The forced and over-complicated backtracking, coupled with the rather serious combat difficulty did not allow me to enjoy the game, but resorting to guides to “play it right” is not something I want to do

i had actually played this game up to the 5th boss on GBA but for whatever reason quit because I guess I thought it was too hard. Well, now I just abused save states a little more (especially the ice dungeon) and was able to complete it. I also had to Google some things in order to beat it (like how to get the ice arrows to defeat Ganon, or how to get the shovel and eventually the bird which just seemed like a needle in the haystack that I forgot about). Overall it was alright but feels like I enjoyed Minish Cap or the Links Awakening a tiny bit more - maybe because it didn't waste my time as much.

Held in high regard for a reason. A great evolution of Zelda 1. Though, admittedly, I found myself checking an online guide more than Zelda 1, or 2, where I just used the manual and the beginner's hint map. and maps for the final dungeons. Here, I used a guide for my last 6 heart pieces, and I knew some things ahead of time from watching playthroughs of it.

I also highly recommend finding the manual online and reading it. Really adds to the experience.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a masterclass in game design. Nintendo was on a roll in the early 90s as so many of their games stand the test of time, and LttP might be foremost among those on the SNES. Nearly every aspect of gameplay, from the dungeon design and it's semi-fluid progression, the open world, enemies, and items, feels honed to a laser precision. LttP isn't so much a revolution, as much of it's design is based on the original, but is like Super Mario World an evolution to a nearly perfected form. And this is reflected in that practically every Zelda game afterwards prior to BotW has used the same formula, incorporating dungeon puzzles, different items and gated open world design.

Everything about LttP feels purposeful. There's no wasted space in dungeons like empty rooms or paths that lead to dead ends. The large open world directs the player to the next objective but doesn't inhibit the player from exploring, and you will be exploring to get all hidden items, heart containers and secrets. Dungeons can be done in vastly different orders, but the game is helpful enough to provide for a "correct" order if one so choose. The game is challenging but extremely fair and much comes down to skill and ability as opposed instead of relying on XP and level grinding as a progression gate.

The game's combat is immaculate, and it's helped a lot by having simple, intuitive controls. One could pick this game up after years of not playing and immediately know exactly what every button press is and how that affects the game world. That may be a strange thing to remark on, but for Zelda (and Mario games to a large extent) it creates a timeless feeling and alleviates any frustrations of getting back into the game or replaying after breaks.

The graphics and sound are simple and clear, but just like the combat there's just a timeless excellence to them. The game obviously doesn't have the particle effects or depth of later SNES games (not to mention modern games), but I find the style to be as enduring, if not more so, given how crystal clear everything is.

LttP isn't a perfect game, no game is, but to me it is the perfect representation of the Zelda franchise and the 2D Action-Adventure genre.

I "Linked" in the future and it's still great
This, for me, is the game that truly raised the bar for SNES games, and the earliest game I can call timeless. The Dark World reveal is crazy, and the way the Light and Dark World flow together is honestly flawless. On top of that, the dungeon design is *chef's kiss* which is incredible considering the bland maze design of Zelda 1. So why no perfect score? Some mandatory items are easy to miss, and the text is very wordy (and boring) making it hard to care for the plot.

Precise Score: 9.1/10

I understand why people believe this game is the greatest 2D zelda of all time. It's interesting seeing how Ocarina of Time is basically this game translated into 3D. I think this game had the perfect balance of overworld exploration and dungeon crawling. Only issues are some things weren't obvious and needed assistance with, and the combat was pretty bad. Going from any of the 3D games to this one is like night and day. For the most part a good game that holds up pretty well, much better than its predecessors.

Zelda; a link to the past, was one of my favorite games to play as a kid, and one that I played many times during winder break. Was also one of my favorite games to play on the SNES my brother and I got for Christmas.

A classic story, you play as the hero to be Link, and his quest to stop the plans of the evil Ganon. These plans involve kidnapping 7 maidens and using them to break a seal to unleash evil. So you quest across two dimensions to stop it.

Love this game, 11/10 will always enjoy it. Also has a very entertaining speed running scene, from using glitches to beat the game in 1.5 minutes, or in 1 hour 20 minutes without glitches.

A cornerstone in videogame history and the Zelda series in particular, but not one of my personal favorite.

Lore wise, it introduces the basis for the Zelda series going forward. But the story is told without much ambition, which is a bit of a shame (FF IV, released the same year, is a real game changer on this aspect). For all the other things that this game accomplishes, I won't comment this one further, as there is not much to say.

Exploration wise, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Still open, but much more "dirigist" than its predecessor, while not putting the proper guardrails to avoid "soft locks" (expl: fighting a boss that requires a missable item acquired in another dungeon, fighting a boss that requires magic items, but not giving ways to refill the magic bar during the boss fight). For you own sake, you are encouraged to follow the suggested order that the game gives you, and it's a bit of a shame as it does not bring anything narration wise... Also, the idea of an alternative world has been reused extensively in other Zelda titles, but in this one, I feel it's a bit of a mixed bag. It leads to some relatively interesting navigation challenges, but brings more trouble than necessary. A "solution" to a non existing problem in my opinion.

For the dungeons, I'm also a bit divised. Often, they do use too much of the same tricks (beating all the monsters in the same room, a bit too linear, mainly locks to get and that's it), but they also introduce some much better ideas (visual identity (even if a bit weak thematically wise and gameplay wise compared to what the display suggests), floors, verticality with items or Link that must fall from one floor to the other, playing with water level...), and those things will also become staples of the series.

I was probably spoiled by having played a lot of other Zelda games before this one, so it was more a curiosity of understanding its legacy and how it shaped the Zelda series as a whole. Maybe what I lacked the most with this one is this magic thing that gives it its own identity, like a Link's Awakening or Majora's Mask.
Also, playing it from start to end when I was younger would probably have led me to enjoy this one much more (as I was less exposed to much more games), but life is what it is. Silly me for borrowing my GBA cartridge to a friend and never getting it back when I was a child! Recontextualized, that's an easy 95, as the game streamlines and poses cornerstones for so many elements of Zelda but also ARPG in general, but I will keep it a bit lower in the context of my playthrough and for personal reference.

It's been over 20 years since the last time I've beaten this gem. Over the years I've started and stopped it numerous times, but for whatever reason with it being 10 years since A Link Between Worlds and soon the new Zelda game at the end of the month I took this month as an opportunity to play through the GBA port on NSO. Boy howdy does this one still hold up. The entire time I played through it was just a delight. Sure the final dungeon is filled with some late-game BS, sure some aspects didn't age well and sure there was one part that I thought was legitimately impossible until I checked gamefaqs and realized it was simply a controller lag issue, but beyond those slight imperfections lies a game that's distilled fun. The GBA port holds up very well. Links constant soundbytes from Ocarina of Time hold up decently and otherwise the game looked and sounded just as good as I remember it on SNES.

Speaking of looking things up, I was pleasantly suprised that my ingenuity and memory of the old game held up so well that I blasted through the game some odd 20, 25 years later. Only one other time in the game did I need to look up something and even then I probably could've figured it out had I not mixed up some memories on how to open the 4th dungeon with what to do. Also that fortune teller was completely useless! Definitely a top 10 all-timer for me and I'll definitely dive back in one of these days. Perhaps an item randomizer run. But first I'm craving more 2D Zelda.
