Fallout 1 is a flawed classic masterpiece and an incredible piece of video game history. While it is incredibly unforgiving for new players, and often obscure to a fault, it's a charming first entry in what would become one of the biggest video game franchises. As a fan of the newer Fallout games, I had a blast visiting the classic and understanding the franchise's roots!

I did follow a guide for the last 2/3rds of the game, I would have been incredibly lost and frankly would have gotten frustrated and quit without it. The game's confusing quest structure (and no real way to track quest lines and objectives) leave for a really frustrating time if you were not taking notes with a notebook (which I quickly learned to do about 8 hours into the game.

Overall, an enjoyable experience! Probably not something I would come back to, despite the replayability of differing quest outcomes--the game is just often too cumbersome that leads to not having fun but rather being frustrated with the experience. But, I'm glad I played it!

A masterpiece that gave new life to the western RPG genre. Some moments are iconic, and created an universe that is still loved today.

Sadly it has aged like milk. There are plenty of bugs, obviously cut content, half-assed elements. It's like the developers had a tremendous idea, but they had to cut it down heavily fast to get it published. Other things, like the inventory, the interface and some other things just aged badly.

A great game, but must be experienced with its limitations in mind to have a good experience.

A great game despite being really really old. My first CRPG and first turn-based game. Not my type of games at first. It was tough at the start, not much is explained, and you're on your own to figure out where to go next. The ambiance is amazing, it really felt like a desolated wasteland, where everything wants you dead (from animals to angry people), mutants and deathclaws were scary and really strong. Music was nice. Graphics were trash but I got along. Character growth was good, at the end I felt like a badass with my Power Armor and Plasma rifle, blazing through flesh.
Not an essential one to play but still interesting to see how games were a long time ago.

The good :
• Fascinating story influenced by your decisions
• Sense of urgency, lack of directions, ruthless combat : immersive absence of hand-holding
• Memorable OST enhances the dark and morbid post-apocalyptic atmosphere
• Well-balanced progression during the whole game
• Iconic Fallout 1 death screen™

The bad :
• Archaic gameplay, getting used to the controls takes some time
• Poor selection of initial stats can ruin the whole experience

The Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game experience :
You are dropped in an barren wasteland with the worst equipement known to mankind, a 120 page manual on how to play the game (!), combats where you can get blown to pieces in a single turn, no autosaves, zero (0) quests/map markers and a strict time limit. Brace for impact, this is peak role-playing experience.

A game strong in setting and writing. Overall does a lot of things well, I quite enjoyed my time and the only thing I can really critisize is how cumbersome inventory management can be (including pickpocketing items on companion NPCs to carry stuff) as well as how dumb you companions can be, often standing in your line of fire or shooting you in the back.

A classic than anyone interested in can return to and enjoy, just have to get over some old game design from the day.

This game took me 5 tries over the last few years before it hooked me. I decided to do a melee weapon playthrough, smashing fools with a sledge hammer, which is what sucked me in.
After the initial area, the game starts pointing you in other directions, giving you hints on where to look next. Having to go and play detective to find a water chip on a time limit was a unique experience that made me not wanna put the game down. Once I found some power armour, I became a force to be reckoned with and it made bashing my way through the end game oh so enjoyable.

That's not to say my only option was to smash some skulls. There were multiple options to solving problems I was faced with in the game, it had me stopping to think and consider the consequences of what the outcome might be. This is the part of the game that I absolutely loved, it felt like I was given the choice on how to play this, like a true RPG should be. It was a breath of fresh air when compared to more modern RPGs that have lost this magic that older RPGs are known for.
That being said, this. Game. Has. Bugs. Every area I went, there was something. Whether that be frequent crashing, missing NPCs, quests not triggering, Being put in combat out of nowhere, etc. On top of that, there are some modern QoL things that are missing. The biggest nitpick grip I have is that entering a town from the overworld while holding a weapon will turn that entire town against you as if you were the big bad himself. Sometimes you don't even get the chance to holster it.

With all this in mind, I really do think this game is good. I am definitely going to play through fallout 2 to see how they expanded on this formula before the jump to first person with Bethesda.

PLAYER GAMING REQUIREMENTS:

💼Post-Apocalyptic.

VERDICT:
I never had the opportunity to play the classic Fallout's so having the chance to experience a retro game like this has been a real eye opener, obviously there's the graphics issue which would put a lot of regular gamers off, but for the big Fallout fans, this will bring a ton of joy.

The story is decent, I really wasn't expecting a game this old to be well thought out. But this is why people have this chance to play this, to experience a game that the devs obviously put a lot of thought into, another big compliment is the sounds and voice acting. You could put this into any new game and nobody would notice it's from the 90's.

Finally, let's talk about the length of the game, can't really complain too much about this one, it takes about 23 hours to complete and for an old game, that's pretty long, it's worth the asking price but only for the fans who enjoy Fallout to the fullest.
Total Score = 69/100.

GAMEPLAY:
In a mid-22nd century post-apocalyptic and retro-futuristic world, decades after a global nuclear war, Fallout's protagonist, the Vault Dweller, inhabits the underground nuclear shelter Vault 13. After customising their character, the player must scour the surrounding wasteland for a computer chip that can fix the Vault's failed water supply system. They interact with other survivors, some of whom give them missions, and engage in turn-based combat where they battle until their action points are depleted.

Great game. I simply had to ding it some for the horrible inventory management, unclear use of some items, companions that can trap you by just standing uncomfortably close, and the unending horrors of not being able to control Dogmeat's incessant desire to get himself in the worst situations.

Really liked it but I'm glad I read a guide and min/maxed my way though. Not trying to deal with all that "old school" nonsense where it turns out certain skills are useless and you don't find out until you're hours in. By making combat pretty easy it sanded off a lot of the frustrating parts and I was able to enjoy the story (and had enough skills to have pretty much any path available to me). It's a much more focused experience than any of the games to follow, and sometimes that works for me. It's really hard to choose between this and Fallout 2 because in some ways 2 was more interesting but it was so sprawling that it just felt like a sandbox. This game you always had a simple goal in mind even if you decided to mess around on the side, and there was a very manageable amount of side quests. Still ran into game-breaking bugs that someone had thankfully created a fix for. I had the patience to get the most out of it but I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone unless they were cool with all the downsides of 90s RPGs and games in general.

Fantastic game for the time. Good story and characters. My main gripe is not how tuff certain enemies are or the damage of guns but rather how many insanely tuff enemies the game will throw at you at once.I couldn't fight the master because of how many super mutants it spawned and I just don't have enough action points to go around even with 9 agility.

I'll be honest, I'm shocked. This game was a real surprise. I felt it would be good, but not THIS good. The only reason it's a 95 is because of how it starts pretty slow, but when it picks up, IT REALLY PICKS UP. Unity is one of my favorite fallout factions now, and the Master is so cool. The game is a little difficult to learn, but once you get the hang of it, it really is addicting. Half of my hours in this game are from yesterday and today, because I have NOT stopped playing. The time limit didn't feel to constraining, but it still gave you the right amount of pressure. I think the ending is a really good twist and adds a feeling of emptiness to the end which I really love. If 2 is meant to be the better version of this, then I can't wait.

Fallout definitely shows it age from time to time, but despite that, there's a really great game here. I had a few bugs and a few more crashes during my playthrough, but overall I had a lot of fun immersing myself into this smaller-than-what-I'm-used-to opening to the Fallout series. There's a lot of freedom in how you approach situations, and there are some serious consequences to the choices that you make. What impressed me more than anything was just how dynamic and immersive this world felt, given how old the game is. I definitely enjoyed my time with it, and I'm looking forward to moving through the rest of the series over time!

When I had played through the fallout series initially, I skipped the non 3d entries because I was worried that this game would be "too hard" for the likes of me, and that I just wouldn't have a very fun time with it. A good example of this would be the original system shock, which is a game that I had always wanted to play, but never actually been able to finish due to its frankly outdated design, until nightdive came along and fixed that little issue for me. After the fantastic fallout show however, I finally decided to give this game a shot. I loved fallout new vegas, and I had heard that this game was pretty much just that but 2d. Unfortunently however, my expectations were a little too high in that regard. While I do think this is a good game, and I think it does a lot better than even stuff like fallout 3 (and of course fallout 4), I don't think its anywhere near as good as new vegas.

The story in this game was what I was most excited about. I knew about the master of course and couldn't wait to see how all the little pieces of story I knew about came together. Unfortunently however, I wouldn't exactly say this game has a good story, rather it has brilliant ideas told in an outdated way that didn't exactly do the story justice. My biggest gripe with this game is that it literally gives you no indication on where to go after you come back from vault 13. I suppose it helps add to the realism by literally just making you go from town to town asking about where to find the water chip, but I find that it really just kinda ruins the pacing and urgency of the story. They try and add a timer to make you actually want to find the water chip, but its so long that I never really found it to be an issue, and I'm quite surprised that people actually point it out as a negative in this game. Just like other fallouts, all you really are doing is just doing side quests that have no real plot relevance and just hope you'll eventually run into the chip.

I followed a guide throughout my playthru and Id say there's absolutely no way I would've beaten the game without it. That didn't kinda lead me to not exerianing the whole entire point of the game, which is finding your own path around new California and saving the vault yourself. I really think this game needs to be modernized in a way similar to new vegas, where it gives you hints on how to continue the story but doesn't tell you either. A lot of story beats arent really mentioned much either such as the church or even the master himself. In fact, I don't think he was mentioned at all for me until I actually met up with him. I love the idea and execution of the master, but unfortunently I don't think the game does a good job dripfeeding the player information in a natural way for most people to get what was intended out of it.

On the flipside to that, the actual gameplay of this game was mostly pretty good, and I'm actually quite surprised that this game has such a reputation for newer audiences to get into, because once you really figure out how to use the UI, its not bad or hard to play at all. This is essentially just a turn based combat game, with a weird camera angle. Sure it can make things hard to see from time to time, but I think the core elements of this game are familiar enough for people to get past most of the obtuse design choices this game suffers from. The combat is really fun, and as you get more and more companions it becomes a lot easier. I will say, I do wish that your companions couldn't shoot you or each other, because that really does make the game pretty hard at times. Honestly you really do just have to work around that issue, which is kinda the only thing that makes the combat challenging in the first place. Overall the companions are really just buggy in general, where they can kinda block doorways from you and make you stuck in rooms, or sometimes not follow you around at all.

Overall this is a really fun game with a lot of cool and great ideas, and honestly if this game were to get some kind of modernized remake, id say that this could be the 2nd best fallout game, behind new vegas of course. I love a lot of the ideas in this game, and the combat is really fun, especially in the beginning, but I think the sum of its parts are just a little bit better than fallout 3. I would definitely say that if your a fallout fan you should try this game however, because its not as different from the bethesda games as some would like you to believe.

I said the same thing for Fallout 2, but Fallout 1 is definitely dated and not for the faint of heart in the modern age. One thing I remember vividly about Fallout 1 is how many darned pitfalls there are in dialogue. Exploring all options of dialogue will more often than not, lock you out of speaking with an NPC entirely. Thankfully modern ports have added QoL features such as Quicksaving and the removal of the time-based ending mechanic.

Yes, there was a time-based ending. Which was very cool, but very limiting. Later Fallouts established the idea that Fallout should encourage exploration. And even this game encourages exploration to an extent, but it kinda feels like you're against the clock if you're risking a game over if you take too long to do the main quest. So I'm glad later ports got rid of that despite the feature being pretty cool.

Fallout 1 is still fantastic and sometimes I go back and forth over whether I like 2 or 1 more out of the OGs. Fallout 1 is the complete opposite of 2. 2 has tons of humor, wackiness, and loves exploring the seedy settlements that have arisen in the Wasteland. 1 is darker, grittier, foreboding. Fallout 1's atmosphere hasn't really been captured again by any future entry of the franchise, the closest being Fallout 3 perhaps.

Fallout 1 is desolate. It's closer to when the bombs dropped in-universe and even down to the music feels like something is wrong. The occasional flashes of wackiness Fallout 1 almost feel jarring with how foreboding the Wasteland of California feels.

It really is an experience unlike any other in the franchise and I'd recommend it if you don't mind getting past the datedness.

The gameplay, art direction, and overall atmosphere have truly stood the test of time. Fallout 1 provides an awesome look into the history of this beloved game series, featuring everything we've come to love, including its staple mascot, Vault Boy. The foundation for the series was fully established in this first game. However, the story and overall narrative is disjointed at best, it's quite jarring how I missed the Master on my first playthrough, even though I knew he was in the game beforehand. This is partly because the game makes it quite vague as to how to actually reach him, and this vagueness permeated throughout the game on everything else. Overall, I find the game really enjoyable, and I believe it's worth beating at least once.

One of the best RPGs of all time. Outdated is a word that's loosely thrown around but if you can be patient enough to learn the game and pay attention, you'll have trouble describing this game as such. Play this game when you're ready to play it not because you feel like you have to. It's a masterpiece so don't sully those two orbs suspended near the upper region of your skull with these weird optical nerves on the backside of them by playing it and thinking it's outdated.

The biggest issue with the game is the UI but if you're willing to mod it, Fixt (and likely Et Tu) will help with that.

Minor issues are some skills being almost useless as they are only relevant in a few areas and could easily be ignored. For a first playthrough, skills you probably shouldn't bother with Doctor, Sneak, and Traps. If you're aware of how those skills are relevant or how they work, and on any playthroughs don't take Gambling and do not gamble it's bad for your soul, your internal organs, your mental health, your wallet, and the 16 digit code, 3 digit code below that, the date, and the name as it appears on the front of that plastic card you took out of your mom's purse without her permission, okay? Okay, goodbye have a nice time.

It hurts a little to rate this one at 85%, but I feel it falls a little short of 90% due to the clunkiness of the interface, in particular inventory management. I should point out that I played the game as provided by GOG, so basically vanilla with an HD widescreen patch only. The story is really good and there's some pretty good replayability in that regards as well. Graphics are still quite good with some nice, gory deaths for enemies, but sometimes items blend into the background that are needed to advance the story. For that reason, I needed to check a guide here and there to figure out what to do. I wouldn't say I needed to use a guide heavily, but I did have to use it often enough to make it fairly essential. Music is atmospheric, but not what I'd call excellent. Definitely worth a go if you've never played it and want to see where everything got its start in the Fallout universe. Just be aware that it's not the smoothest experience nowadays.

Fallout 1 is a journey through a post-apocalyptic world that feels alive and teeming with potential danger, making every decision feel weighty and impactful. The game's 2D isometric view and turn-based combat might seem dated to modern gamers, but they contribute to a unique charm and strategic depth that sets the foundation for the franchise. The character customization allows for diverse playstyles, ensuring every playthrough feels fresh and challenging.

The story, with its blend of dark humor and grim realities, presents a world that’s both enthralling and thought-provoking. The choices available make the narrative engaging and offer a sense of agency that’s quite impressive for a game of its time. The dialogue options are rich and varied, allowing for different approaches and outcomes, which significantly enhances replayability.

However, newcomers might find the user interface and graphics a bit challenging to navigate initially, but these aspects become endearing once you're immersed in the world. The game also doesn’t hold your hand, which encourages exploration and experimentation, ultimately leading to a rewarding experience.

In enhancing the Fallout 1 experience, the Fallout FIXT mod is a praiseworthy addition for both veterans and newcomers. This comprehensive mod not only addresses various bugs and glitches but also offers an array of customizable options, allowing players to tailor the gameplay to their preferences. Whether it’s improving the game's resolution, tweaking the balance, or adding cut content, Fallout FIXT rejuvenates the classic, making it more accessible to modern audiences. It's a testament to the game’s enduring legacy and the community’s commitment to preserving its charm while refining the overall experience.

In conclusion, Fallout 1 is a seminal work in the RPG genre, offering a rich, immersive world filled with choice and consequence. While it may show its age in certain aspects, the depth of its gameplay and narrative make it a timeless classic that continues to influence modern RPGs.

My first turn based video game experience. Coming from someone what had only played Fallout 4 and watched game play of Fallout 3 & New Vegas, I really enjoyed the writing and sense of humor this game has compared to the Bethesda Fallouts. The only two problems I had with the game were the clunky interface and frustrating encounters when rolls don't go your way. A great experience, and the original retail copy ran flawless on Windows 98. A great experience I'd like to replay someday.

OG Fallout is terribly hard to get into. It's isometric, and it's notoriously brutal as a game. But if you can get past the first few hours... it's very rewarding.

Plot was fine, pretty simple. A repair job eventually turns into a mutant invasion, gotta save the vault! Ending was iconic, "Maybe" is one of my favourite songs ever because of it's prevalence in the series and getting exiled is what I attribute it to.

The Master is the best villain in the series, and it's not close. I don't think any other villain in the series genuinely had a plan that was both realistic within the scope of what he could accomplish, and genuinely believed he was doing the right thing by turning people into Mutants. The fact you could talk him out of it was awesome, I wish RPGs would give an option to skip the final boss more often if you can convince them.

The humour, weird popculture references, strange sidequests that were actually pretty well thought out and written in most towns, and the lore were all top notch. It was one of the first games of its kind and it's still revered as one of the best CRPGs ever. It is hard to properly enjoy though, not everyone's cup of tea.

I'll start by saying the story and the world of Fallout 1 were incredibly captivating. It was really thought provoking, and it depicts a post nuclear world so authentic to the point it leaves uncomfortable feelings. Do you like games where you can immerse yourself in the story, and your decisions have an impact, look no further.

If you're interested in the Fallout Franchise this is the perfect place to start, if you have some tolerance for older games.

[STORY]: As mentioned above, this game has one of the best stories I've experienced, you'll be finding yourself searching the wiki and diving deeper into the lore. Different playthroughs can differ from each other, wheter you are skilled in Speech or have high Intelligence decides a lot this game. The storytelling is awesome as you start with one important main quest, and during the course of solving this problem, you get more and more information about a far greater threat. Almost every dialogue has a lot of options to choose from and makes it easy to really play your role, it just feels so alive even If this is such an old game.

[GAMEPLAY]:
Very simple, point and click to navigate everything, but it takes some time getting used to it. Combat is turn based, and half of the fights can be really tough, where you really have to stop and plan every Action Point you spend this round. It's tough because you are not stronger than another beings with comparable gear. Every fight can be really close until you get better gear. So in the early game it was really hard to survive, but once you acquire some of the best weapons you really begin dominating and this change is really rewarding and satisfying.
Investing Skillpoints in: Lockpick, Repair, Science, Speech and Sneak has a great impact on your game and will change your solution to every quest. This feels so huge. Be really careful talking to NPC's because everything you say could change a lot in your playthrough.
Have you threatened someone in the Hub's Downtown? You may need help from this person later on, and you may regret it.
There are a lot of outcomes to every problem and situation and it's fascinating and entertaining to think about.

There are some cons of course:
- you have to save a lot, there are gamebreaking bugs and you're likely to encounter them.
- you could play it without a guide, and it may be the most interesting riddle to solve ever, but I believe this will take too much time, I recommend a guide when stuck!
- the story is so good and big, but the ending came kinda abruptly for me
- it takes time to get into the groove of this game since inventory management, bartering and movement is bit outdated but when it clicks, it's quite good!

TLDR;
If you're a fan of cRPGs, this is for you. Fallout 1 has a captivating story and thought-provoking world-building. The gameplay is simple but challenging, and the choices you make have a real impact on the game world. It is a bit dated, and it is a bit of a slow burn, but it's worth sticking with. The story gets better and better as you play, If you can get past the graphics and the bugs, you'll find a rewarding experience.

The "evil" ending is dope. If you can't get through this game legitimately, use cheats to give yourself a slight advantage. It's still worth playing for the story, quests, and ending. I wish this game would receive "Enhanced Edition" treatment, with the proper quest log, map, and quality of life improvements.

Now compare this game's ending to Fallout 4's ending, and you'll see how much Bethesda misused the Fallout IP.

One of my favorite RPGs of all time. The post-apocalyptic setting is perfect, the turn-based combat is fun, and the UI/art holds up surprisingly well. A lot of replayability too - I just beat the game with a purely melee combat based character.

Shows its age in a lot of places, but plays excellently on the Steam Deck. Combat can sometimes feel unfair and unforgiving, and the game doesn’t hold your hand in giving you the main quest line. World building is great and gives context to the modern Fallout games, but there are limitations brought by the isometric world and dated point-and-click interaction system which may be a turnoff for fans of the 3D games. While I only ran into a few game-breaking bugs, some quests were never fully implemented and lead to wasted time.

Brilliant soundtrack, character creation, and setting, but the experience is often held back by truly horrible UI and a very bad companion system in which you control almost no aspect of their combat. It's compelling and open enough that I would play again right now, which I don't feel too often.
