A really awesome experience start to finish. Loved playing it in 3d, and it played like a dream. Even better than the first; if not a tad too easy. A wonderful modern Mario that's a ton of fun. Glad that I've finally played both of these DS(3DS) titles!Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Updated 3 Months Ago

It’s a good game for people who haven’t played the first one, since it doesn’t bring anything new. Other than that, it’s fun and solid. It’s a pretty average game for the Mario series, but definitely top-tier compared to other franchises.Updated 3 Months Ago

It's a Mario game so yeah, it's pretty damn good. This one's main focus is on coins, which is cool but you won't have to worry about game overs as the abundance of coins leads to endless lifes. Still, a fun one with a decent challenge for the main story but getting the 3 start coins per stage to 100% the game is the real challenge. Also getting to all the stages can be tricky.Updated 6 Months Ago

I don't think I'll be able to see any more coins after this game. Joking aside, it was a really fun game with really nice and creative levels and ideas. Because the game is designed to collect coins, there are also a lot of secrets, which were fun to look for / find. The tower bosses were okay but unfortunately always the same idea, but I thought the co-op bosses were really well thought out. The bosses and the game in general weren't really very difficult and therefore relatively short, but it was still a great little experience. Despite the general reviews, I thought the game was really good and I think the game is definitely underrated.Updated 6 Months Ago

So I decided to play this game for real after having tried it for only a couple of hours way back then after watching a YouTube video about the Super Mario Bros. series.I played the heck out of the DS one and even beat the Wii one once, but I generally did not associate having a lot of fun with a Mario game to the platforming titles. Putting some time and effort into this one actually blew me away.
The added mechanic of the coin collection sounded kind of dumb at first but it actually adds a lot to the replay value of this thing.
The levels are genuinely interesting and far better than the stuff I remember from the DS and the Wii eras. It's challenging at times and all of the completionist hurdles I had to overcome to 100% this thing were loads of fun.
Having not tried the Wii U titles yet, I can safely say this is my favorite Mario platformer so far. Very happy I gave it the time it deserved.

Probably a fun game if it's your first Mario. Otherwise, you can pass. NSMB2 is by far the laziest Mario game ever made. It's basically Nintendo doing a Mario because they have to do one to feed the 3DS catalogue. It screams 'we do not care' at each screen and trust me, you will not care either. So, Nintendo being Nintendo, it's a competent 2D platformer. If it wasn't for the glorious Updated 8 Months Ago

Among the modern side-scrolling Mario games, I think this one is the most fun.The stages are far more creative than those in New Super Mario Bros. U, and the hidden worlds strike a great balance between challenge and accessibility. They’re tough but not impossible to beat.
That said, the 1-million-coin challenge feels pretty lame and doesn’t add much to the experience.

As the only 2D Mario game I have completed, this game was fun. It shouldn’t win any awards and is not memorable but I cannot deny that I enjoyed the simplicity of the game. My main complaint is that it is too easy due to the super leaf thing that makes you invincible. This game was perfectly average but did feel a bit like a chore by the end of it.Updated 9 Months Ago

New Super Mario Bros. 2 perfectly encapsulates the state of Mario in the early 2010s and what was wrong with it. This and New Super Mario Bros. U pretty much killed the entire traditional 2D Mario platformer line for 11 years, and that for a reason. It's that generic and boring. The game is more of a sequel to New Super Mario Bros. on the DS, which there's nothing wrong with; it means the level design is a bit more crammed to fit on the screen and the world map has for the most part the same structure. Similar are the world themes; nothing new; your typical grass & ice worlds are here to stay, with the exception that there's world mushroom and world flower to unlock via secret exit, but they reuse the themes and don't do anything new.
It also doesn't look a whole lot different; the resolution is higher, and that's about it.
Now, what does this game do differently from the previous ones, who first revived 2D Mario, and then added a huge coop experience? Well....nothing. New Super Mario Bros. 2's entire identity consists of as much nostalgia as possible, with no room for any bright ideas that make the game stand out.
The game rehashes the level themes you're already familiar with, with the same graphics you saw two games ago. The levels' most interactive gimmicks are all ones that you've seen in either the Wii or DS predecessor. The boss design for the mid-world bosses is basically them adding another Reznor from Super Mario World to each tower 'til the game ends. The final boss of the game is New Super Mario Bros. Wii Bowser, but instead of a horizontal level, you get a vertical level.
There is not a single power-up in this game that isn't a variation of an already known power-up. They act like the leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3 is such a noteworthy addition to the game, that half its identity is based on it, even though we already had Super Mario 3D Land one year prior, which did the exact same thing. We also got the Mega Mushroom back, but pretty much toned down to the maximum with barely any cases where it's useful, making it feel more like they just happened to have the code for it, so why not throw it in to bump up the number of available items?
The only thing that can be considered even remotely "new" is the gold flower, which is a fire flower, but now it has splash damage and turns everything into coins. The entire gimmick in general is just trying to see how many coins you can get, for no practical reason. They put coins everywhere, like some jingling keys that are supposed to add some dopamine to this mind-numbing experience.
Of course, they didn't even think about fine-tuning the experience due to the sheer amount of coins you find, rendering this game incredibly easy. You get 1-ups so fast, at that point there shouldn't even be a life counter, cause getting a Game Over is a challenge itself. Even the power-up and 1-up houses are jokes. For the former, you literally get the choice to pick anything you want with no challenge; for the latter, the minigame is so easy that you get 6 lives without breaking a sweat.
The nonexistent difficulty curve is also found in the main game. Die too often? Here's a block that plays the level FOR you. The mid-bosses entire shtick is hitting them from the bottom for 8 worlds straight. The Koopalings are still easy to hit-stun and beat without putting up a fight at all, even Bowser is just a waiting game with barely anything happening in between his attacks.
This game is so inoffensive in everything it does, it almost makes me feel offended for even playing it, since every single idea is either ripped from a previous game, new and badly implemented, or so indifferent to me that I probably forgot about it.
The only difficulty found in this game is trying to 100% it, which isn't for good reasons.
Star coins are usually found thanks to coins indicating them, but that's pretty hard to do when the entire game is just coins en masse, making the hunt harder for all the wrong reasons. The only moments where the game wants to be creative are when it tries to introduce a new mechanic, like a flying block that flies upwards for one level and then never again, so you don't even know this is a real mechanic that can happen in the game, leaving you wondering what you missed.
There are also SO many star coins only obtainable by getting the mini mushroom, but the mini mushroom often doesn't even appear in the same level where the coin is found, so the game pads for time by forcing you to go to another level, pick up the mini shroom there, and then go back and redo the level again.
Also, to truly 100% the game, you need 5 stars that get obtained for different conditions, one of them is getting 1000 lives. Talk about wasting my time.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is the most generic, bland game I had the dishonor of playing. The only compliment is that it's functional. Sleep medication firms need to watch out for this game, thanks to how sleep-inducing and creatively bankrupt it is.

If you look at nsmb2 by itself, it's nothing more than a mid platformer. When you compare it to the nsmb series, it becomes a lot more intolerable. It's just constant repeats from other games like the basic ass world's, the koopalings, the graphic style. Hell, not even Super Mario Bros 3 (NES) is safe from the thievery of this game. From re introducing the tanuki suit to the horrible mini bosses that are the dinosaurs on a ferris wheel, they reuse over and over again. Nothing in this game is original The one thing that sets this game apart is the mass amount of coins, which honestly does give me a lot of serotonin, and collecting mass amounts is fun. Overall, if you have played any other nsmb, you have already experienced everything this game has to offer and there isn't much reason to play this other than its very short lengthUpdated 1 Year Ago

Nothing new.Every game that has me collecting things, NEEDS to also give me a good reason to collect it. A work and reward system. I collect machine parts in Horizon Zero Dawn in order to craft better weapons. I collect herbs in Resident Evil 4 to fuse full heals. I collect coins in New Super Mario Bros 2 for...for what? For a higher number on the counter? Grabbing coins in a Mario game is of course nothing new, but this is the first one to put so much emphasis on it. Yet the game provided no strong incentive to do so. I could grab all the coins in a level, but did I get a special upgrade? A bonus level? Nothing. There are already star coins. What’s the point of putting so much focus on regular coins? There’s a mode called “coin rush” where players collect as many coins as possible in 3 levels, then have their high score put on a leaderboard. It also lazily reused levels from the single player mode. Why would I want to play through the exact same levels again? Repetitive. Boring. I personally don’t give two shits about a leaderboard in a Mario game, so coin rush felt like all work no reward for me.
Aside from that, this game is virtually a carbon copy of New Super Mario Bros Wii. Same physics, same visuals, same upgrades, same everything except level layout. In world 6, there was a really cool level that I wish the devs would’ve used in other worlds. While I was platforming, the Koopa Clown Car would be in the background flashing its eyes every 5 seconds or so. If I was caught in the open, I’d be petrified. My goal was to scramble my way from one cover to the next. It was nice to experience something different for a change. I feel the devs are getting very lazy with the 2D Marios. I’m getting tired of the same enemies, same boss fights, the same obstacles, the same hub world, and the same DAMN blocks over and over. I know how the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But time is starting to really wear on this formula. Innovate Nintendo! I know you’re good at it, so do it.

Ive been playing this game at the same time as Donkey Kong country Returns 3D, and in terms of quality it is dwarfed. This game is not only iterative but it is worse than what has come before it. The best parts about the poor new super Mario bros series is the movement and the music. Both music and movement have taken a huge hit on the 3DS this is not a problem of the 3DS however, Because Donkey Kong country returns has both amazing music as well as tight movement. overall this game was a huge disappointment even though my expectations were extremely low.Updated 1 Year Ago

I love how colorful this game is and how happy it makes me feel! Possibly the best entry in the “New” series if we aren’t counting DS’s side modes. Coin Rush makes the game surprisingly replayable and I just really love the Super Leaf to be honest. Yes, it’s super generic and really easy/short, but that won’t stop me from always deriving a ton of enjoyment for the short time I spend revisiting it every so often.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

I dont mind the coin collecting gimmick, though I didnt particularly put any effort into collecting. While the game doesnt stand out for much else, and is in a lot of ways more barebones feeling, I found the difficulty being on the easier side a huge plus. New Mario Wii U was terrible due to ridiculous difficulty off the bat, this one feels comfortable and just what I was looking for.Updated 1.5 Years Ago
