I think sonic peaked out at sonic 2. this was my first foray into 3D sonic. Was not impressed. Controls dont feel as tight, never entered the flow state. hated the colors shit. I am yet to beat two of the levels but perhaps its better not to.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

[DS Version] A decently fun version of Sonic Colors that manages to combine the general aesthetics and gameplay mechanics of it with the boost gameplay of the Sonic Rush games, essentially serving as an unofficial sequel to it. If you enjoyed Sonic Rush there is a very high chance you will enjoy this. Gameplay is much the same as Sonic Rush, with huge zones split across two vertical screens, the only major difference here is that the trick system to build the boost meter has been removed and replaced by the wisps, with white wisps serving as a boost refill alongside what you get for killing enemies. The only real downside here I felt was that some of the wisp powers could feel a bit awkward to use and weren't maybe as fun to use as their main game counterparts. The violet wisp for example is such a pain to control being so floaty and some of the instances of its use require some very precise timing that can become rather frustrating. The other downsides are mostly based on the fact that it's a DS game, dual screens and touch controls can lose their novelty quite fast and there were numerous occasions where I wished it was just a normal game on a larger unbroken screen. It's good for what it is but that element of frustration can't be overstated, that feeling that things could have been so much better.
All that said though, it's solid. There's red rings and S ranks to aim for if you're so inclined, plenty of content and challenge to push through if you feel like it. Worth a shot if you are in the mood for a Sonic game but at the same time others might be a tad more approachable or appealing.

Probably the best second 3D Sonic game in my opinion. The stages are fun, the alternative stages / missions aren't so lame.

People seem to generally think of this as a really good Sonic game, but ehhh... I think it's just okay. It's just that each zone has six acts, but there's usually only one or two that are actually fun (with the exception of Planet Wisp, probably the best time I had playing the game, and also the absolute best atmosphere and music, besides just having the best gameplay). The majority of the levels feature a lot of boring 2D platforming that Sonic's controls just don't feel very well suited for. There is one stage that is literally just 40 seconds of quick stepping. A good chunk of Sonic Colors just feels very unsubstantial. The Wisps are cute, and as a gameplay mechanic, they're fine enough. The story they're wrapped up in is also sort of just okay. The characters are just so incredibly annoying in every cutscene though that it's hard to want to hear any more about the story. The final boss felt very creative in the way it used all the Wisp powers against you, but it was over too quick to build on that idea much at all.
Really the one thing I can gush about with Sonic Colors is the entire atmosphere of Planet Wisp. The beautiful music, the way you can ominously see the tractor beam generator in the background as you run around. The clashing natural landscape with Eggman's machinery makes it really feel like a planet you want to save, whereas the others all felt uninhabited (you only ever saw Eggman's robots in each place, no signs of life of anything).
I guess I'll leave the review on that note, as I don't really have a lot I want to say about the game. Not frustrating like Sonic UnWiished, but just incredibly boring most of the way through.

This game is a visual treat! I love the themes for the levels and how colourful everywhere is, however the individual levels themselves aren't memorable at all. Due to them splitting each area into 6 or so different acts, instead of Sonic's usual 2 or 3, you are left with a lot of shorter ones that don't really stand out for their level design, only their theme. Along with this, despite appearances the game is more of a 2D one than a 3D one but the controls aren't built for that kind of precision so it led to the game always feeling a little off to me.The story is a bit of fun, Eggman harnessing alien "wisps" for their energy under the guise of building a theme park. Unfortunately the script itself is poor which really hampered my enjoyment of the cutscenes. However I did appreciate the gameplay variety of the wisp powers but did think it was odd they tied the scoring system to their usage. Music is great as always for Sonic, as are the sound effects. I particularly liked the announcer voice for the wisp powers - Rrrrrrocket! never got old.

Never been a Sonic fan, so from where I stand, I have the feeling that every other year I hear about The New Sonic Game And This Time It's a True Return to Form We Promise. If Sonic fans are ok with that, I don't see why I wouldn't, but I don't see anything specially great in Sonic Colors. Barely average platformer IMO.Updated 1 Year Ago

The most consistently polished “3D” sonic game. It has no noticeable bugs, the levels are nicely designed with plenty of replayability, the music has that nice sonic feel, and the story is lighthearted and palatable. However, it’s less of a 3D sonic game and more of a 2D one. Most of your playtime will be in 2D sections, and when a 3D sections/levels do pop up the game turns into an autorunner similar to subway surfers or the Temple Run. While this game is consistently good, it never reaches the heights of Sonic Unleashed’s daytime stages.

Sonic Colors is by far one of the best Sonic Games, its level design, Soundtrack, and mechanics all line up for an amazing game! And what surprises me the most is the fact that this beautiful game, is all on the Wii hardware! Highly recommend to anyone who is a sonic fan!Updated 1.5 Years Ago

Like unleashed, this is meant for the DS game, and honestly, not bad! Obviously it’s not as good as the Wii version, but the stages and soundtrack are still great and the fact that it honestly feels like it can be a part of the sonic rush series, makes it even better! Because it’s a 2D plat-former it feels like rush with the added wisp abilities! It’s a very fun game that I recommend to anyone!Updated 1.5 Years Ago

This is a game I feel very mixed on. First my biggest complaint, the level design. For every good level there are like 3 bad ones. It's clear there are so many added just for padding and they're just unfun. However when you do get a fun level that really sticks out. Overall the game feels inconsistent because of this. Sonic's controls also feel off at times. Sometimes he feels heavy and I think that was intentional because of the level design. It kinda threw me off compared to other Sonic games. There's also the corny cutscenes but those are whatever. What I enjoyed the most were the environments and music. This is easily the best Sonic soundtrack. At the end of the day this game just leaves me wanting to just go play the much better designed DS version. What an unexpected disappointment.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

Sonic colors is a bit of an odd game. At the time, this was the video game that sonic fans desperately needed after critics slammed unleashed and Black Knight, and people seemed to be pretty happy with this one when it came out, myself included. However, I have realized that I don't really come back to this one as often as I do with other sonic games, and I always wondered why that is. The level themes are all very unique, the soundtrack is great, and the gameplay is the boost formula we all know and love, so why is it that this game didn't stick with me the way most other sonic games didn't? I guess while the gameplay is cool, most of the level design revolves around controlling sonic in a 2D space, and I've always been more of a fan of the 3D setpieces sonic runs around instead of the 2D segments in modern sonic levels. That being said, this game is still very solid, so I don't think you should sleep on it especially if you like sonic. It's just one of the few weird games that sits in a sort of personal purgatory of mine.Updated 3.5 Years Ago

•Mechanics (Wisps are fun and intuitive)
•Controls (An improvement from Unleashed)
•Multiple Save Files (Most Sonic games have one)
Cons:
•Filler Stages (Tropical Resort Act 4 for example)

Sonic Colors DS is basically Sonic Rush 3. It takes the good level design from Sonic Rush Adventure and adds the Sonic Colors code of paint to it. Its Sonic Rush with Wisps and way better level and boss design and no boats or stuff like that likei n Rush Adventure. Definetly my favorite in the Rush Trilogy, as a Sonic Game its a B Tier. Its solid even though the final boss was okay-ish and the last world returned a little bit back to the Sonic Rush kind of level design which means: random deaths. Still good music, good level design, solid game.Updated 4.5 Years Ago

It's pretty good. I think Sonic Unleashed has higher highs and lower lows than this game, so it's up to you whether you think this is the better of the two. Regardless, these two games are at least worth trying if you're into platforming.Updated 4.5 Years Ago

Pretty good. The levels are designed really nicely, with multiple paths, and they look gorgeous too. The wisp powerups are varied, and really fun to use. I also like the little touches like on the results screen, being able to bust up the numbers in your score, which will sometimes drop rings or an extra life. There are a few frustrating levels, where you're forced to memorize enemy patterns by dying a lot, but there's only a few of those. Overall, this is one of the best Sonic games in years.Updated 4.5 Years Ago

I like Sonic Colors, I really do but after replaying it I don't like the auto scrolling parts at all (thankfully there's not a lot) and I enjoy the small amount of 3D sections more than the 2D ones. The story is fine for what is there, but the writing for the characters is just bad - is that the best they could come up with? It has an absolutely outstanding soundtrack though.Updated 5.5 Years Ago

Sonic Colors on DS plays pretty much like Sonic Rush except with wisps. It's a perfectly fine version of Colors on DS, but there's barely a story here. But unlike the Wii version, Super Sonic serves a purpose in the story. Also I hope those god damn half-pipes never return again. Thankfully they are pretty easy this time around.

I actually like to consider the Wii and DS Versions as one game, despite them being made by two different developers. The reason being because I think they are both equally good.I mean the Wii Version feels like the full package, but the DS Version manages to be just as fulfilling.
Both are great platformers and great Sonic titles. They showcase tight level design, while also encouraging the player to master them with the variety of level routes, colour powerups and collectables. They also have the most imaginative levels with some of the best music in the franchise. Also, I like how the DS Version lets you talk with Sonic's friends again. Something I greatly miss... ;_;
It may be frustrating at times, but for the most part, I feel it's the good kind of frustration; the kind that encourages you to play more and beat the game's challenges. The only real negative quality I have to say is that the dialogue is... pretty terrible.
All in all, Sonic Color Rush did an excellent bringing some life back into the franchise. Even the most diehard Sonic haters had a soft spot for this one.
