I left a very weak review of DMC3 many years ago which didn't do this game justice in the least. Devil May cry 3 is absolutely one of the greatest games of all time and in a hypothetical top 100 video games of all time list, Devil May Cry 3 absolutely has earned a spot in. Pride used to hold me back with this game a little as it was my brothers favorite game of all time but now I can't deny how unbelievably good this game is. I'll try to keep my praise brief.Good: There is so much that DMC3 does right it's very difficult to sum up but I can go ahead and start with what most people love this game for, the combat. It's addicting, fast paced, daunting, rewarding it has everything you could want in a combat system. The various styles and weapons give a great sense of strategy too as each mission varies drastically. The weapons in particiular all serve a purpose: Rebellion is the ultimate all arounder with the best melee reach, Cerberus is a genuinely good boss killer with solid defensive utility when paired with swordmaster, Agni and Rudra is an insanely good alternative to Rebellion (also required for dmd thanks to jump triangle), Nevan is underrated and usually tossed aside due to it's unorthodox usage even though it has the best stinger in the game plus it completely invalidates enigmas (those arrow fucks. Plus breaking their arrows give you a ton of style points) and Beowulf is a brutally strong, super sick looking weapon that's a real money maker. I can't speak of the combat the whole review but you can write a whole thesis on the combat alone. It doesn't get old
Music is super tight and the story is easily the best in the series. Everyone fits into the plot beautifully and the aesthetics of the Temen ni Gru is truly remarkable with it's gothic architecture and the choreography at the time was remarkable and frankly still is. Dante is cocky but clearly just and fair while Vergil is cold and calculating but very misguided due to the trauma he has suffered. Lady serves as an excellent reminder to Dante and his human side as he witnesses her single minded drive to kill her wicked father, Arkham for the atrocities he's committed. It all culminates into a truly remarkable ending and the battle between the two twin brothers is still one of the most legendary cutscenes I've ever seen. Out of all the DMC games, DMC3 is the only DMC game with a plot I still think about a lot.
I've barely scratched the surface of what makes this game god tier but I have to mention the several elephants in the room. As good as this game it it DOES have it's fair share of backhands.
The bad: First complaint is a temporary issue but this game is indeed RUTHLESS when you first start. Barely any health, all styles at level 1 (trickster is nigh irrelevant at first level) and no weapons aside from Rebellion and E+I. The game will still be tough later on yes but by then you'll have a lot more at your disposal and you'll have amassed a lot more skill.
Bosses are mostly good but man does this game have some BAD battles. Gigapede is the first offender as its just a really boring battle where most of said battle is just waiting around. Jester is just really boring and feels like a silly bullet hell game later on (thankfully he's usually optional to fight), doppelganger is similar to gigapede in where there is just too much waiting. However nothing and I mean NOTHING compares to the actual total dogshit fight against Arkham. Aside from the fact that you are fighting a giant amorphous blob who's attacks are hard to gauge because he is a giant amorphous blob, the game decides to cripple you halfway through the fight by sending Vergil to fight with you. Plot wise this is incredibly awesome but gameplay wise it's god awful cause Vergil replaces your circle button thus locking you out of your style. For the penultimate battle in the game it's a MAJOR blemish on this game as a whole as it simply isn't a fun or engaging fight.
My final complaint is Dante must die mode. I don't care how many "skill issues" I get from this but DMD mode is a terrible mode. Very hard was an excellent difficulty as it truly tested and respected your skills. DMD throws it out the window by crippling your damage output by 50% and reduces it even further once enemies use their devil trigger. The mode is just a brutal slog of just wailing on enemies for what feels like an eternity and you basically have to start relying on degenerate strats to get a decent rank. The fact the DMD now requires you to take NO damage for an S rank in damage is complete nonsense and makes me wonder if their was a gas leak during it's creation.
Final complaint is the rank system. This is a minor complaint as not everyone cares about rank but man, the criteria for a good rank in this game is brutal. Orbs and time shouldn't be factored in.
All in all, play this game. 10/10. I've reached the word limit. I recommend the switch port.

Updated 1 Month Ago

We are so back. This game has the best story, amazing gameplay, engaging bosses, and the most “Dante” dialogue. From beginning to end, he’s as cool as possible. It is more often than not comical. This is Vergil’s “first” appearance, and he does not disappoint. He steals the scene every time he is on screen. The rest of the cast all feel like they fit well into the story. The Temen-Ni Gru is the best setting in the series. This game also has the best title drop of all time. You should absolutely play this game at least once.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

The game’s really good, with an amazing start. I feel like it drops off around missions 14-18 — it kinda peters out and feels rushed, without any memorable stages or crazy cutscenes like in the beginning. But the ending is good and bounces back well from that slump. The game’s fun overall, with smooth gameplay and really good bosses.

Some notes and parts from the review:
Devil May Cry 3 was a game I played as far back as 2008 when I first finished DMC4 for the first time. I bought the original 2005 release because I thought I could handle the "hard" difficulty many at the time would love to say it has. I tried but without infinite Devil Trigger cheat I couldn't get anywhere. I did beat it on the HD collection over a decade ago but that was the Special Edition version. I did beat DMC1 2 months ago so that gave me the excuse to finally beat the Switch re release that I got years back. The Switch version of 3 comes with Style Switch from later games, being able to hold all guns and melee weapons without modding the game with "free style mode" as well as having the Special Edition's more forgiving normal difficulty and continue system. If you want to play DMC3 on console, this is very much the definitive way to play. A shame the PS4 and Xbox One version never got an update including "free style" mode and the other additions the Switch version has.
With all that said, when playing the game with Style Switch, it was never designed with this in mind since if you are not using one style throughout the whole campaign, it will take multiple playthroughs to get the base 4 styles up to level 3 especially if you are actively switching between them during moment to moment gameplay.
Overall, DMC3 is an enjoyable game and despite my issues with it which can seem numerous, but as a whole, it's fun in the moment and that's what mainly counts. However much of my enjoyment of the game comes from the additions made in both the Special Edition and Switch versions. Playing as Dante the whole game also played a massive role as well.

I played the first 3 Devil May Cry's back-to-back, for the first time, in 2025.Pros
-The characters and cutscenes are all really enjoyable. A good mix of funny and badass.
- The story, while pretty straight forward, is much better than the first two games. I liked it. It worked for me.
- The environments all look nice and still hold up well. Many of the levels are fun to navigate and explore.
Cons
- Ive had a difficilt time enjoying the combat in all three games. It feels kind of slow or clunky or something. I cant quite put my finger on it.
- The camera, while improved from the other games, it still not good. You dont have control over it most of the time but sometimes you randomly do. It makes so many parts of the game needlessly frustrating. Maybe I would like the combat more if this wasnt an issue.
I want to love this series of games. I feel like they do so many things right but the combat and camera issues really kill it for me.

I like that the level design is a lot more varied than future entries. Even some stage hazards. The snowboarding move on knocked down enemies is original as well. Making level design more of a factor in kiting enemies. I suppose since it hasn't fully adopted the combo sandbox design yet, it's still needed to have quality level design. Especially the smaller rooms full of enemies that force you to think much harder. Excellent action game aside from many many bosses and some of the more gimmicky missions are a bit of a slog. If I could skip them, I would. Who cares about story, but the direction in the cutscenes is fantastic. Really enjoyable action. Plus one of the best looking games as well.Updated 4 Months Ago

What can you even say about a legendary game like this? It's simply a must-play. The gold standard. A genre-defining masterpiece and 20 years later still the best game in the series overall. The level of quality and amount of varied content in DMC3 is astounding and has never really been done again in the series. The gameplay is absolutely fantastic and still makes up 95% of the later games' design, even having some fun mechanics, quirks and of course weapons that remain exclusive to it. The level design - while fairly straightforward for the most part - still has that intricate, interconnected DMC1 / RE Survival Horror philosophy to it as well. You explore some really interesting and striking places and structures. It's actually possible to get lost too, and you can even end up in really early parts of the game up until very late into it.
The music is of course great as well, with plenty of energetic industrial bangers, dark ambient soundscapes and beautiful orchestral pieces.
DMC3 is also the last - and maybe only - game in the series with a proper, coherent and good story. Action games don't necessarily need a good story, and as fans of the genre we sure don't have high standards in that regard, but it does help that a monumental game like this also manages to competently tell a story with maybe not the most depth, but with some pretty great emotional payoff.
Not all of the writing and "cool" stuff has aged as well as I'd like, which might just be because it's a product of the mid-00s. But for the most part, it's still a pretty cool and fun journey. The cutscenes are still a delight and the choreographies very impressive, unbelievable really especially for the time.
So yeah, it really is a wonderful game, and if there's one game in the series or maybe even the whole genre that everyone should play, it's Devil May Cry 3.

CUT OUT!
Bloody palace - калька с LotR: The Two Towers?
To exit the game, simultaneously press Alt + F4.
The Return of the King.

Story - 10/10Devil May Cry has some perfect story telling, the story is only shown during cutscenes so that is something I love about it.
Music/Setting- 10/10
The music really brings the game to life it doesn't seem like it is not out of place, it makes a lot of sense in a game about fighting demons.
Gameplay- 6/10
I will be honest I played this game a while back on the PS3 and I thought it was great but it didn't age to well in the way the game plays.
Post-review:
Recommend? I do, however only to those who want to play the game with ok controls. Other than that it will not disappoint.

First of all, I want to say that I'm surprised by the quality of Nintendo Switch's port of Devil May Cry 3, it's genuinely a great port with some cool minor additions.Aside from that, I'm also surprised by how well the game aged in some areas, particularly its combat system. I wish the upgrade system was deeper and the weapons would have more skills to unlock, but it's not that big of a deal, there are many weapons to use and the combat system by itself is highly enjoyable and flashy nonetheless.
The story is nothing special or interesting but it's not an important part of the game. At least the characters are nice and they make up for the lack of engaging storytelling.
Also, the pacing is pretty good, and it's an important part of the game.
Unfortunately, the visuals and the audio haven't aged as well as the gameplay, but the music is quite okay actually.
What aged even worse though, is the absolutely horrible camera, boring level design and the repetitive looking areas.
Most of the boss fights are badly designed with either boring gimmicks, questionable hit boxes or unbalanced moves in some instances.
Lastly, there's a lot of unnecessary backtracking after a while, and the puzzles are all tedious, with some of them barely giving you any clues for some reason.
Pros:
+ Fun combat system that holds up very well
+ Serviceable characters
+ Consistent pacing
+ Decent music
Cons:
- Very bad camera
- Uninspired level design and environments
- Mostly annoying boss fights
- Frustrating backtracking and puzzles
Final Rating: 7/10
- Good -
Devil May Cry 3 is a great game for the time it originally came out, but it didn't age very well in most areas aside from the combat system.
Do I recommend it?:
I'd recommend it if you've already played Devil May Cry 5 before and you want to get deeper into the series, otherwise, not really, you're better off playing Devil May Cry 5.

Now this is where the series truly begins. Over the top action and cheesiness. The combat is fun but tough, maybe a little too tough. Most of the melee weapons are useful except for the guitar. Definitely play on gold mode. Also incredibly easy to get lost in this game as it went back to the resident evil style map design.Updated 1 Year Ago

When I first started playing this game I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. Everything about this game was nearly perfect. It has amazing music, a slightly cheesy but overall great story, and it’s graphics are some of the best for a ps2 game. Every moment of the game felt epic. This includes gameplay. At first, the gameplay can feel strange and maybe even clunky. However, it soon becomes like second nature. There is also a ton of variety in choice of weapons, combos, and styles. The difficulty curve is nearly perfect. I felt that each boss was stronger than the last, and that once I beat a boss it would fill me with immense satisfaction. I recommend this to anyone who can handle fast paced gameplay.Updated 1 Year Ago

While admittedly I have not played Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 3 is the perfect evolution of the first DMC. Being able to switch Devil Arms and Guns at will, having a large selection of Styles with unique abilities, and an even tighter combo system make Dante a blast to control. His goofy one-liners, the over-the-top cutscenes, supporting characters, and the great soundtrack make for an amazing game that rarely falters.Updated 1 Year Ago

This party's gettin' crazy! Let's rock!Devil May Cry 3 is an astonishing leap in quality from not just DMC 2 but DMC 1 as well. This is where the series really found its heart and soul. Dante is one of the most endearingly dorky goofballs of a protagonist in the history of video games and Vergil is literally the coolest motherfucker ever and you cannot tell me otherwise.
Aside from the single room with platforming, controls were great. The incorporation of multiple different styles of gameplay make the variety in choice for combat excellent and the number of new weapons is great. My personal favorites had to be Cerberus and Beowulf. I wasn't the biggest fan of Nevan however and found its usefulness to be extremely circumstantial.
For a PS2 game, the quality of animation in cutscenes and models feels like 5-6 years ahead of its time and the action scenes are pure eye candy.
I found that this game solved the issues I had with DMC 1's mission structure and made each nearly level enjoyable. The exception to this would be the level inside Leviathan (mainly due to the shitty filter it puts onscreen) and the boss rush. Due to the variety, style meter, drip-feeding of new weapons and unlocking of new moves, combat never got boring. Even when it was completely superfluous, I fought nearly every battle I came across. The only enemies I didn't like were the angel demons that show up late-game due to their ability to phase through the environment and being extremely hard to land consistent blows on.
Bosses are where this game excels and stumbles the most in my opinion. Cerberus is a fantastic introductory boss and was just pure fun to fight. Gigapede was lame in design and had a shitty camera. Jester was fairly good but didn't need three fights. Agni and Rudra were fun but fairly tough to beat. The Heart of Leviathan was a filler boss that was more annoying to beat than enjoyable. Nevan was alright but suffered from prolonged invincibility and occasional poor telegraphs. Beowulf was a fucking blast and his hyper-aggressive fight was a constant battle of stress and adrenaline. Geryon was good and had a great cinematic approach to his fight. Lady was really really easy and I kinda wish she got a more difficult battle. Similarly the Doppelganger was a cakewalk and spent most of the fight taunting rather than actually fighting.
Special mention needs to be given to the utter fucking disaster that was Arkham's fight. Up until this point, aside from the camera in Gigapede's fight, I hadn't have considered anything about this game to be "awful". Then, Arkham's fight began. The first half is okay, though his eel-attack is fucking impossible to avoid without Lady's rocket launcher. Then Vergil shows up. Now, you lose half of your moves and the ability to use Devil Trigger and have Vergil flail about half-copying your inputs and half-doing his own thing. The second half of the fight becomes a total clusterfuck of arbitrarily limiting your moveset and handicapping you for literally no reason. Vergil should've just been an A.I. controlled character, it would've allowed for the cinematic approach to this fight to occur while still giving you full access to your moves.
Speaking of Vergil, special mention needs to be given to how fucking incredible all of his fights are. His battles are both mechanically and narratively excellent and test your skills up to that point perfectly. I'm so glad there was a third Vergil fight after Arkham because it allowed for the game to end on a high note rather than a sour one.
The music in this game is legendary. Dark-angelic-gothic-rock-metal-orchestra is the best way of describing the way this music sounds and if that sounds totally badass then I encourage anyone reading this to give the OST a listen.
The cast is great. Dante, as previously stated is beyond lovable and comes off as snarky and quippy in the way modern video games wish they could be. Every second Vergil is on screen, your eyes will be glued to whatever he is doing. His presence is utterly commanding and terrifying. Lady is a firearms badass and I really wish she was playable. Her arc with Arkham was really enjoyable to watch. Arkham, for how shitty his fight was, is the simplest character of the lot but I found it worked the best when contrasted with Vergil's blind ambition, Dante's playfulness, and Lady's vengefulness. He's a piece of shit that you can't wait to see put six feet under and the writers knew this.
Overall, aside from one horrible boss fight and a few iffy levels, this game is a masterpiece. I cannot recommend it enough. As it is a prequel, you don't even need any info from the first two games in order to understand it. You need to play DMC 3, it's an utter joyride.

DMC3's one of the top 10 games i've ever played. One of the best hack n slash games. The cinematics were great, the story is great. The combat is really fucking good, i could do it for hours on end.
The bosses and all the stages were memorable. The first act inside the office was great, the introduction to the game and the cinematics were cool.
I love the character designs, especially Dante.
Devil Arms
Rebellion: Basic but it's the best one out of the rest and I prefer it over them.
Cerberus: It's great to use, the moveset is fun.
Agni & Rudra: It was alright not much to fight with, wasn't my fav.
Nevan: It's very forgettable since i rarely used it.
Beowulf: In the top 3 weapons, looks very fkn cool. Fun to fight with too.
Didn't fuck around with firearms much other than ebony & ivory.
Boss Fights:
Hell Vanguard: It was annoying at first but it's fairly easy. Not that interesting.
Cerberus: Cool fight, used to love it.
Gigapede: Really tedious boss, it wasn't really fun just memorable cause of the stage and annoying boss.
Jester: Really fuckin cool character. The cutscenes of him were always cool to watch. Boss fight was fairly easy.
Agni and Rudra: They were ass, nothing interesting.
Leviathan Heart: The whole stage and the boss was alright. Cutscenes were cool tho.
Nevan: It was fun
Beowulf: Literally had to look up the fight cause i forgot the boss even existed. I remember the cutscene, that's about it.
Geryon: It was a fun stage and the fight in the arena was kinda fun too.
Lady: I remember it being too long, it was a boring stage tho.
Doppelganger: Really fucking cool. The scene and the fight itself were very cool.
Arkham: I can't recall much more than a blob but i'm sure it was cool.
Vergil: Every fight and scene with him is just great. The fights were challenging and really great. The cutscenes with interactions between him and dante were especially great.
Special Edition had few additional things that I can't really remember. Pretty sure it was that Vergil was playable in this edition. I fucked around with him but I didn't finish the game with him.
