Will give it a revisit, I need to, there's just too much going on in the story that makes me non stop talk about this game. Then I sit down and play it's mediocre combat. No matter how much I spec into guns, I don't like the concept of just stand still and cop it in order to guarantee hits. Also the second the dragon's tooth was discovered the combat can be devolved into just rush in and one tap. But I just keep thinking about the story so I must revisit.Updated 2.5 Weeks Ago

This is a real immersive sim! I thought I wasn’t gonna like it cuz the gun mechanics are weird, but I really liked this game! The gameplay is fun, if a bit outdated, but I can look past that. The story was cool, with all the conspiracy stuff. J.C Denton is cool, the soundtrack is cool, it was all cool. However, being an old game, there isn’t an autosave feature and I had to use quick saves, which is annoying. I also got stuck a couple times, but that was just me being a low IQ individual. I actually tried to play this game a while back, got to the airfield and got stuck, and quit. But I made it past without issue this time. The last mission in area 51 was interesting, because there were 3 different outcomes and I didn’t know which one to pick. I went with the new dark age option, I still don’t know if that was the right one. But that what this game’s all about. It challenges the government and the way we rule our world. Even though this game is 24 years old, its themes are still relevant, like the ending choice on if you want an AI to rule the world, which feels like it could become a reality nowadays. Anyways great game, the most immersive sim-esque immersive sim, wouldn’t have Cruelty Squad without it.Updated 5.5 Months Ago

As a kid, I remember this game being fantastic and iconic. I've always remembered the very first level on Liberty Island being so memorable and fun - it wasn't just a shooter, it had puzzles and problem-solving elements too. I liked that. But something about this playthrough was wholly un-fun. The game hasn't aged well at all, especially on newer hardware. I'm certain that if Eidos ever did a complete remake/remaster of this game, it would be a different story. Unfortunately, I don't think they will.
3/10 - Had potential, didn't live up to it.

It's Work! Updated 1 Year Ago

Really Good. I technically didn't "kill" anything either. Complete non-lethal not counting the stupid animals and how they are named animal carcass even if you used tranq and baton. Forced to explode a little number but I mean, they were a TERRIBLE person and they are the ONLY person in the game that is not tranq-able so whatevs. Robots I did explode but they are robits so whatever. In the end I did a lowest kill/one/two kill run of the game. And the best part, I still had a lot of fun while doing it.Updated 1 Year Ago

This was great for its time and the story IS interesting but I would much rather just watch the 90 minute story summary instead of playing the game. I quit after I ran around looking for the solution of a level only to find out I ran into a bug making it so the necessary sequence doesn't trigger and made me stuck forever until I restart. Noped out.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

A true classic in video game history.A truly important game, ahead of its time in many ways when it was released.
Its virtues are several:
Its story, which deals with conspiracy themes of organizations controlling the world and scheming for their own interests, even if it costs millions of lives. It has a good philosophical and political background, rare to touch on in a video game from the year 2000, which leaves you not indifferent. It also has several endings, personally the one I chose I liked a lot and seemed, in a global context like that, the most appropriate (the game also puts you in that dilemma of choice when you reach that point).
Its soundtrack is absolutely incredible, an electronic genre somewhat synthwave and eighties that personally drives me crazy.
Its gameplay (with nuances) is very good. When I talk about gameplay, I particularly refer to the options the game gives you to complete the levels. This is undoubtedly what surprised me the most, since you can pass it in stealth in many ways, killing them all, gaining access to various areas or not, etc. It gives you many opportunities. However, the "action" option is somewhat regular leaning towards bad. The gunplay in this game is absolutely deplorable, and time is no excuse because in 1998 Half-Life had come out with magnificent gunplay. I think it's done on purpose to force you to be a true efficient agent and not a crazed Rambo. However, in my opinion, if you gave good killer gameplay and maintained the possibility for the player to choose how to overcome obstacles, it would be much better. In the end, it is true that the levels felt long to me, there was a lot of "searching for a hidden key who knows where." Very convoluted and even more considering that it is extremely easy to get lost, since there are no maps (and the ones they give you in "image" format do not make an effort to be clear). This last point is worth noting because it can easily become frustrating.
However, if you don't have a dislike for classic games, this is probably one of the most important titles in history. Just for that, I totally recommend at least trying it out.

I'm torn on this game, on one hand I liked the story and world this game presented, but on the other hand the performance was ass, it was very hard to see, it's annoying how you can't quick save while someone is interfacing with you, your choices don't matter that much, some levels were way too long and way too big, and all 3 endings are really unsatisfying. There's so much potential here but I feel like for every two good things, there's one really annoying thing.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

What a weird old game. The difficulty is all over the place, sequence breaks are everywhere, and specific enemy types are a fucking nightmare. They randomly and casually drop that aliens are a thing. It is a quality only found in games of this era where you simultaneously feel like a god and like glass surrounded by hammers. It's a whole lot of fun if you have the stomach for this kind of antiquated jank.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

One of the original "duct hunt" games (i.e. immersive sims) where one solution to nearly every puzzle is to find the right air duct. Has a handful of cool ideas but simply isn't fun to play in modern day. I much prefer a more streamlined (some would say arcadey) game with very similar tropes and set pieces that released in the same month: Perfect Dark.Notes on the PS2 version: Aiming is fine, looks OK, loading screens are a bummer but the worst part is the loading screens will show you images of the area you're about to enter killing some suspense and surprise. Also makes using augs on the fly difficult.
- Gunplay is never satisfying (except stealth one shotting)
- Going back to completed areas
- Environments are very ugly
- Level design in the early levels is terribly bland, boring and spread out (picks up after Hong Kong)
- Unclear where to go to a fault since sometimes the only way to progress is to find that one datapad or button you missed 12 rooms ago so you'll be stuck often (which was intentional)
+ Excellent soundtrack
+ "Bob Page" is a hilarious supervillain name
+ Gibbing guys with the rocket launcher
+ Good story and fun ending

If 1999's The Matrix is genre-defining for movies, then 2000's Deus Ex is genre-defining in gaming. For a 2000 game, this is a masterpiece. They worked and poured everything they had into the game with what technology was available at the time (I was still playing floppy disk games and didn't know about CD!). Prophetic, philosophical, engaging story and yet at the same time very comedic, mixed with bad voice acting and clumsy mechanic. The NPCs are unique and full of characteristic dialogue. A mix of everything that blends in and works together. Don't even think about graphics, just enjoy it.
Play if you want to laugh, and to think (but mostly to laugh). It's like watching a good comedy movie but it leaves you thinking. You also can choose how it will end.
The music is beautiful, I am in AWE of the title screen's theme every time I opened the game, almost on par with MGS3.
This game really is the Deus Ex Machina for gaming, in a time when PC gaming was still in its early stage.

Even despite it's age, it still holds up as a classic pioneer in the "Immersive Sim" genre. One of the greatest experiences I ever had, stealth is rewarding and challenging. If you like games like "Prey (2017)" or the Metal Gear series then this is perfect for you.If graphics are holding you up, then there exist mods like GMDX and others which enhance visuals and fix some bugs and generally enhance user experience without modifying the magnificent story of this game.

alexa's backlog review #15 - Deus Ex - 7/10RETIRED
This was clearly a very good game on release that innovated in many areas, but by current standards it has very little remaining novelty and is left to smoulder in mediocrity. It does a lot of things decently, like shooting, stealth, and branching story paths, but none of these excel anymore, given how much they've been outdone over the years, leaving the game unfortunately feeling generic, dull and dated. If I had less games with similar mechanics and ideas to play that were just better and more fun than Deus Ex I probably would have continued, but as it stands the game just doesn't hold up enough in design to the modern alternatives to be worth my time.

I went into Deus Ex with huge expectations, and they were mostly fulfilled. The beginning of the game, up until the end of Hong Kong, Deus Ex is an absolutely perfect, unmatchable game - perhaps the best WRPG of the many I've played (although to be fair I have a serious commitment problem with finishing games). However, once you get near the end of the game, most of the momentum begins to slow down, and it isn't really until Area 51 that things start to pick up again. I still think Deus Ex is a must-play for any PC gamer or RPG fan, and I have very high expectations going into the rest of the series.Updated 3.5 Years Ago
